Best Friends and Birthdays #1

Matchmaking and Mixtapes

Rate this book
How Evie sees her life as she approaches her thirty-fifth birthday: pretty close to perfect.

How Evie’s mom sees her life: doomed for spinsterhood and in need of matchmaking at every turn.

Between her three lifelong best friends, a good job, and a beautiful home, Evie has nearly everything she needs. She’s in no hurry to find love…until her first (and unrequited) love, Wesley, unexpectedly returns to town for the birthday party Evie’s mom is throwing, and stirs up all kinds of long-buried feelings.

As the boy next door, Wes was one of Evie’s closest childhood friends. Somewhere between playing out scenes from their favorite movie and listening to Wesley’s endless mixtapes, Evie fell in love. As the old friends catch up after years apart, Evie realizes she never fell out of love with Wesley, and begins to wonder if her feelings for him might not be as one-sided as she always assumed.

While her mom attempts to find Evie’s perfect match, Evie can’t help thinking she’s already found him. Too bad he’s only in town for a week…

Matchmaking & Mixtapes is a childhood-friends-to-lovers romantic comedy set in the fictional town of Bellevue, Ontario, Canada. Full of banter, crackling chemistry, and plenty of swoons, this is a kissing-only romance with mild language. It's the first in the new Best Friends & Birthdays series.

Marie Landry lives and writes in a cozy apartment in Ontario, Canada, surrounded by books and Funko Pops. An avid reader from a young age, she loves getting lost in characters’ worlds, whether they’re of her own making or someone else’s. She particularly loves stories with as much of an emphasis on self-discovery and friendship as on romance...but don’t leave out the romance!

When not doing bookish things, you can often find her taking pictures, cooking, scrolling Instagram (find her at @marielandry.author), daydreaming about frolicking through the Scottish Highlands, or listening to the same music she's loved since the '90s. She's an unapologetic nerd and fangirl, and that, along with her mental health advocacy, is often woven into her books.

I REALLY enjoyed all the nostalgic notes in her newest novella that gives off the best Fall vibes.

Evie is about to turn 35 and dreading being set up (again) by her very Emily Gilmore esque mother.

Luckily when her best friend Wesley returns to town old memories get stirred up as they take a walk down memory lane and Evie realizes he might have more than “friendly” feelings for after all.

Grab this if you like:

✨The Princess Bride
✨Close female friend groups
✨Mutual pining
✨Friends to lovers
✨Kissing only
✨Novellas

Matchmaking and mixtapes is out now and I HIGHLY recommend!! I can’t wait to read the next books in this new series featuring Evie’s other friends.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an early copy of this book and all opinions are my own.

Omggg this book was a perfect starter to the series..

Having a series revolve around 4 childhood best friends who are now 35 and having their birthday span from October to December..

This book has such a cozy feel because of all the favourite tropes & and the casual intimacy 🥹✨

It is a quick read and a fun one to take you away from the quarter/ mid-life crisis..

All the characters/ side characters complimented each other and oh the feel to have someone who knows you way too well…

Thank you Marie for giving me this ARC

*I received a free ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are, of course, my own!

M&M is the epitome of a sweet, fluffy romance. Reading this book felt like getting a big hug, like being gently kissed on the forehead, like being tucked into bed with a fluffy blanket. I can already tell this book (and the whole series, really) is going to be a comfort read for me. I read M&M when I was having a terrible day and it lifted my mood, cheered me up, and quite frankly healed something in me. It’s the perfect friends-to-lovers romance.

People who follow me may be shocked to find out this is a kissing only book. No smut to be found! But the way Marie writes and the way she builds tension and romance between her characters is FLAWLESS. By the time they finally kissed, I was ready to throw my hands up in the air and do a little happy dance. The TENSION. The PINING. The CHEMISTRY! It was all so well written and had me as the reader on the edge of my seat just WAITING for Evie and Wes to finally give in to the chemistry between them and lock lips.

If you need to be convinced further, here is what you will find in the pages of this wonderful book:
- Childhood friends-to-lovers
- Best friend’s brother
- “It was always you” vibes
- ’90s nostalgia
- Music as a love language
- Princess Bride references
- Set in Ontario (during the autumn!)

First, I want to thank Marie Landry for providing me with this book so I can bring you this review

Ohh how I loved Marie Landry’s Matchmaking & Mixtapes! It is a book that will have you instantly smiling ear to ear, have you walking down memory lane, and put love in your heart! This is my first time reading anything from Marie Landry and I can assure you it won’t be my last! It is such a fun, quick, and easy read!

Evelyn’s and Wesley’s storyline had to be my favorite that gave me all the feels! Just adored reading about their past and present. You know how readers pick out their book boyfriends? Well this pair would be my book couple!

I loved how Matchmaking & Mixtapes had a lot of pop culture and 90’s themes intertwined into the storyline. It made for such a fun read going down memory lane.

This is a book you will want to put on your must read TBR list!

Delightful Fall Read!! I think Marie Landry writes THE BEST Fall books and this one did not disappoint!

This book is the first in a series, so it had the heavy lifting of introducing all the characters - who I LOVED. Now, I'm excited for ALL the other books!

But back to this book - I really loved Evie and Wesley they were so sweet! Like you keep sighing, sweet. I loved Evie's relationship with her friends and just really who she was personally. I was so very happy to watch this story play out.

This book is like a warm hug on a cozy day! So, get yourself a blanket, some candles and a cup of tea and settle in and READ IT!

I just loved this childhood friends to lovers romance. It is a sweet romance. It has a Hallmark ending, which isn't a bad thing, but I wanted more. And I want the whole series too. And I want Wesley.

Evie and Wesley are childhood friends. Wesley's sister is Evie's best friend so they spent a lot of time together growing up. Their attraction is so strong, in order to avoid ruining their friendship, Wesley moves away... for 20 years! But he returns (I assume for Evie's birthday). They are still reluctant to admit their feelings, but there are oh so many hints. It is romantic. It is sweet. It is funny.

It's a very short book with short chapters which I just breezed through. I will definitely be reading the rest of the series.

If you are looking for a sweet romance with not the slightest bit of steam, this book is for you. And Marie Landry is a Canadian author and the setting is Canadian. Bonus points for that!

Well, that was fun. I love a good trope and friends to lovers is one of my favorites (it mirrors my own relationship). Does anyone watch Nailed It! on Netflix? Because I swear Wesley’s appearance description is Wes from that show to a T. Anyway, good, quick read, fun was had. Thanks to BookSirens for the arc to read/review for free.

If you are about to turn 35 and give up on love, read this cute, cozy, fall-themed book.

I'm not a fan of friends to lover, but this one was sweet. I enjoyed the trip down memory lane and back to the 90's early 2000's, and it got me wondering where my discman is...

The group of friends' dynamics was also great and, although there was no spice at all, it was an entertaining enough read for Autumn.

This book was such a lovely fall read with all of the pumpkin spice lattes and autumnal vibes🍂 The writing in this book was amazing, I read it so quickly and when it was finished I was left wanting to read more!!!

The characters, the settings and the storyline were perfect and all I want is to go to B&H diner with Evie and Wes for a hot chocolate☕️🤩

Thank you so much to the author for gifting me an ARC of this book!!

If you’re looking for a sweet cozy fall read then definitely add Matchmaking and Mixtapes to your fall TBR 🍂❤️

This is my first book by author Marie Landry and I have to say I found Matchmaking & Mixtapes short, sweet and wholesome. If you enjoy friends to lovers, childhood best friends to adult lovers, closed door romance, references to the 90’s and fall vibes then this book is definitely for you.

My only disappointment with Matchmaking & Mixtapes was that the plot and relationships seemed very surface level. I’d have loved for the characters relationships to have been delved into a bit deeper. I felt I was left wanting to know more about each friends back story and history. But perhaps that is the authors point. There are three other books coming up in this series so perhaps Matchmaking & Mixtapes was just a teaser as to what’s to come.

Thank you so much to Marie Landry and Booksirens for my arc of Matchmaking & Mixtapes. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This was a nice and wholesome romance.

It’s also a short read coming in at less than 200 pages; but because of that I found it wasn’t quite deep enough for me. While I liked the characters (especially that they’re in their 30s!), the Canadian setting, and the overall concept, I didn’t find myself really attaching to any part of it.

Essentially for me it’s a book for those looking for a quick read and/or a good palette cleanser romance.

Not my first Landry and won’t be my last either!

Thank you to @marielandry.author for giving me the arc for this book.

This was such a cute and relatable story! The moment I saw the cover of the book, and the associated tropes,I knew I had to read this book. Isn' the book cover giving all the fall vibes?

The friendship between the characters was so beautiful, and it makes me jealous to know that some people have that kind of lifelong friendships. I also really enjoyed reading about Wesley's and Evie's friendship and budding romance. Their connection was so effortless, and I really admired that about them. The book promised to deliver 90s vibes and nostalgia, and it did not fail to deliver. The story made constant references to old shows, songs, and my favorite, cassette tapes 😍. Wesley and Evie have been friends since their childhood, and as a grown adult, Wesley shows his love toward Evie by making mixtapes and sharing with her. It felt like such a cute and personalized gesture!

Another aspect of the book I enjoyed was the relationship between Evie and her mother. Even though Evie and her mom didn't always see eye to eye, Evie still showed her mom respect and appreciation, which I thought was really cool. It's good to remember that there are different types of love, and the bond between a mother and daughter is unique and delicate.

Overall, I adore this book and think that it was very well-written. The book was set in Canada, so those are automatic bonus points.

Tropes: Childhood friends to lovers, '90s nostalgia, cozy autumn vibes, all the pining. Best friend's brother, music as a love language, sweet/ kissing only

This was such a good read. I really enjoyed it. I definitely recommend it. I love series and books with a great, strong and supportive group of female friends. This story is both a best friend’s brother and friends to lovers romance. As Evie faces turning 35, she has to deal with her mother’s showy attempts at matchmaking, as well as the sudden return to town of Wesley, her best friend’s older brother, one of her childhood best friends, and the man she secretly loved. I loved the past history between these main characters. “I can’t help feeling as if this walk down memory lane is littered with emotional grenades and I’m the one who’s going to end up hurt.” The obvious love and affection that showed through with all their interactions was lovely. The characters were all engaging and I very much enjoyed the interactions with the friends, especially Stella. It was nice to have the sibling not be forbidding the romantic relationship (for the most part) for once. The Canadian setting for the series is a fun change of pace. While this is not a long book, it really felt like there was a lot to it. This book is the first in the series and set-up elements of the other books. I will definitely be reading the rest. This is a closed door story with some light innuendo and a small amount of mild harsh language.

I loved this "meant to be" story, because it was so much more than "Friends to lovers".

The entire time reading this I was reminded of a poem by Lucy Maud Montgomery (in Emily's Quest)

Since ever the world was spinning
And till the world shall end
You've your man in the beginning
Or you have him in the end,
But to have him from start to finish
And neither nor borrow nor lend
Is what all of the girls are wanting
And none of the gods can send.

Wesley and Evie were just adorable.  I love a good friends to lovers story and this was it and so much more.  I loved hearing their history and how much they had always been there for each other, also how much everyone else saw they were soul mates.  I felt like I was on the edge of my seat waiting for them to FINALLY get together, but I loved the journey and all musical references it took to get there.

"She may be meddling, but I can't fault her for thinking we're meant to be.   I always thought that too."

Read this book if you love

❤ friends to lovers
🍁 meant to be soul mates
🍂 lots of build up
❤ found family
🍁 meddling parents
🍂 a moony and swoony read
❤ mixtapes nostalgic
🍁 Princess Bride references "As you wish, Buttercup"

Favorite quotes...

"Have you always known?"
"Known what?"
"That he loves you?"
"NO. just that I've always loved him."

"I'd tell you I've always been yours, you just didn't know it."

One word to describe to book, amazing!!

Ok, I lied. There is not only amazing but sweet, comfort, adorable, heart-warming, incredible. I could go on and on. Marie Landry is the Queen of writing romance novels based in an Autumn setting!! When I received a copy of this book I dropped everything. I knew I had to get my blanket, my coffee and my candles because I was entering my comfort zone with another one of her books. Thank you Marie!

This book is the first book of her new #BestFriendsAndBirthdaySeries. We are introduced to Evelyn, Stella, Hollie and Louisa. Then there is also Wesley, Stella’s brother. They have all grown up together and are now getting ready to celebrate Evie’s 35th Birthday. Evie is excited to hear Wesley will be in town and coming to the party. So many childhood memories and feelings come back to her all of a sudden, including love.

This book has so much nostalgia (mixed tapes - remember having more than a few) and reference to a popular movie The Princess Bride.

If you like childhood friends to lovers and best friend’s brother troupes this book is for you!

Now I am off to watch The Princess Bride!

This book is coming out on September 14th. Please go and pre-order yourself a copy now

I think I’ve figured out that childhood friend or friend to lover are my favourite romance tropes and I think it’s because they resemble my own life best. Doesn’t mean there are ‘growing stretches’ of change but someone that at the core is a best friend can lead to some pretty incredible love stories.⁣

Evelyn and Wesley. Evie and Wes. Besties from childhood and one that knows her the best. Just too bad life got in the way…. This is their story and it’s full of Canadian landmarks and cozy small town feels. It’s got 90’s references and mixtapes (IKYK). ⁣

If I could sum this up with two words it would be 𝙣𝙤𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙡𝙜𝙞𝙘 𝙨𝙬𝙚𝙚𝙩. Sweet as sweet can be. ⁣

Wes and Evie have been best friends since they were kids. Technically, she's best friends with his sister, Stella, but long summer days and a mutual obsession with Princess Bride extended their friendship beyond what Stella could give.

As a teen, Evie started looking at Wes differently. He was handsome, charming, and still called her Buttercup. But she was afraid of telling him how she felt because she didn't want to lose his friendship. When he moves away, she fears her chance with him is gone, and she certainly doesn't expect him to show up for her 35th birthday with a string of mixtapes just like the old days.

Matchmaking and Mixtapes was a cute, short romance about two friends who've secretly been in love with each other for over a decade. Wes's history of making Evie mixtapes was so adorable! It took me back to high school when that's how a boy showed you he liked you without ever saying the words.

The romance between Wes and Evie was sweet enough to make you jump up and down in your seat, but her circle of friends was my favorite part of the book. Each one has such vivid potential for their own book, and I can't wait to jump into their stories!

If you like closed door romances with humor and heart, Matchmaking and Mixtapes is for you!

Thank you, Marie Landry and BookSirens, for the opportunity to read this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This book is adorable! I’m a sucker for a happy ending and love an unrequited love, second chance storyline so this one was just perfect for me! It also helped that Wesley was dream book boyfriend material.

While I adored the friendships (can’t wait to read the rest of the girls’ stories) and thought the romance was just perfection, my favourite aspect of the book was the relationship between Evie and her Mom and how that developed as the book went on.

I already knew that Marie is the expert at giving me all the fall vibes (Yes A Very Perry Wedding I’m talking about you!) and she hit the spot again here! Don’t know that I’ve ever craved a PSL so badly.

Sweet, cute, adorable, cosy, comforting….. what more could you want in a fall romance? This is ultimately a book that will make you smile and leave you feeling all warm and happy inside.

Worth knowing before you go in that unlike a lot of Marie’s other books, in this series kissing is as steamy as it gets but ooft you could feel the tension!

Highly recommend and I can’t wait for the next book in the series which releases in just 2 weeks!

Oh, it's *inconceivable!* how much I loved this book! Talk about romantic, swoonworthy, and the perfect mix of nostalgia for anyone who grew up in the 90s and loved The Princess Bride!

It's full of autumn gorgeousness, and has a gorgeous hero too! I adored the relationship between Evie and Wesley, I melted every time he called her Buttercup, and finished the book in a flood of happy tears!

Something that's always front and centre of Marie Landry's books is friendship, and from the very first page, I loved the dynamic between the four lifelong best friends and I love knowing that we'll get to know more about the other girls in the coming books!

I've read and loved every single one of Marie Landry's books, and nothing makes me happier than knowing there's a new one coming out, especially when it's the start of a series! I'm counting down the days until the next one!

5 HUGE stars!

This is an ARC review and these are my honest thoughts and opinions. The moment I seen this cover I knew I wanted to read it (I know, I know don't judge a book by the cover...but come onnnnnn just look at it!) Marie did such an amazing job at developing the characters you can't help but fall in love with them. This story takes place in Canada and is about Evie (MFC) and Wes (MMC) who have been friends since childhood. I loved the 90's references lol took me back to a happier time. I can not wait to get my hands on the next 3 books in this series! This is a closed door romance so no smut just sweet kisses and a loving love story.
Without a doubt i will be recommending this book to others!
I want to say thank you to @marielandry for my ARC to read and review. As always ,please check the TW!

Do you love pumpkin spice lattes, 90s mixed cds and childhood friends to lovers!? I DO! This novella only left me wanting more! I loved Evie, her family, her friends and, of course, Wesley. I instantly felt like I was part of the girls’ friend group and wanted to know everything about everyone. Then enter Wesley. Swoon. Evie and Wesley’s relationship was so dang sweet and I loved that they were childhood friends. I adored the “mixtapes” piece and the mutual love of The Princess Bride. Landry really captured Evie and Wesley as besties and you could feel the depth of their relationship. I want more of them as a couple! I also loved that all these characters were in their 30s! Great job Marie and thank you for sharing! Can’t wait for more!

such a lovely fluffy romance perfect for the fall time! gave me all the fall/cozy vibes. had me blushing with how sweet wes was.
the tropes were perfectly executed best friends brother, childhood-friends-to-lovers, unrequited love, giving slight miscommunication trope; all tied beautifully together.
perfect romance for this upcoming fall and has great writing! not only that but if you don’t tend to like reading books with spice this is a CLOSED DOOR ROMANCE. it’s honestly just a perfect feel good cozy romance.
will definitely read more work from marie landry, and definitely will recommend this read to anyone who loves a quick easy feel good romance for this fall time.

I loved this book!!! It's full of heart and nostalgia and lots of yummy sounding food. It's a perfect fall read. I can't wait to read the rest of the books in the series! And you can bet I'm putting together a playlist of all the great songs mentioned in the story.

Marie writes the gamut from sweet to steamy. This book is firmly in the sweet category.

I'm a sucker for a good closing line and this book has a doozy. It made weep -- in a good way.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author (and I've already pre-ordered it b/c I loved it so much). Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. Thank you, Marie!

COMING OUT SEPTEMBER 14TH! I was fortunate to recieve an ARC to review.

Matchmaking & Mixtapes by Marie Landry gives you all the warm and fuzzy feelings.

Right from the first page, seeing the lifelong friendship of the women and how they interact with make you smile.

I really enjoyed all of the references of songs, mixtapes, and Princess Bride. It brought back good memories of my own childhood.

The relationship between Evie and Wesley was so full of respect and love for each other. The way they flirted and were smitten with each other was swoonworthy.

If you're looking for a book that will warm your heart and make you smile, this is the one for you!

Evie is a successful bussinesswoman at 35 but still single . She is having the best 3 girlfriends anyone can ask , parents who loves her and a secret crush to Wesley . They have been best friends since they have been kids but he lives three hours away and he has a girlfriend . When her mother invites him for her 35th birthday party and he accepts she is happy to see him . When they spent time together she realises she never stoped loving him . What will happen when she will find out that he is single and moving back ? Will they have their happy end ?

I love Marie Laundry’s writing and I’m so happy to be able to read 4 new books from her so close together with the release of the BestFriendsAndBirthdaysSeries !
.
The first book is Matchmaking and Mixtapes where we first meet our four best friends: Evie, Stella, Hollie and Louisa. I already love the friendship dynamic and I’m so excited to be able to get to know all of these women better.
.
Matchmaking and Mixtapes follows Evie and Wes and it is so sweet. I loved all of 90s references and is the perfect book to kick off fall. This book is great for those who love childhood friends to more and best friends brother tropes! I loved the music references and the mixes! I also like the developed of the relationship between Evie and her mom.
.
