It's 1832 on the Caribbean island of Tobago and Sapphire Carlson is the cherished daughter of prosperous farmer, Bertram Carlson. Bertram's sudden death plunges Sapphire into mourning but her grief is entirely eclipsed when just days later she is confronted by a secret her father neglected to share. She is black, despite her creamy ivory complexion and bright green eyes.
The law of the land is clear, all unfreed coloreds are slaves.
David Fletcher is a wanderer who lands the overseering job at the largest plantation on the island, The Hill. David's life is consumed by the work and people he finds himself drawn to protect. That all changes the moment he reaches out to the newest addition to his workforce. Sapphire is different from anyone he has ever known and he wants to help her come to terms with her new life. But there is one obstacle, Sapphire loathes him.
Sapphire and David find themselves thrust together in a brutal world which compels them to challenge the intolerance surrounding them, as well as those they harbor for each other, before they can be free to love.

Any book written about Henry VIII always gets my attention but my favorite man must be King Arthur. Need I say more?

Tainted but made whole
What a book! SPOILER ALERT: In the beginning everything seemed to be on even keeling, no slaves mentioned but after Bertram’s death it seemed like the inhumanity of slaves and their treatment came to the forefront. My feelings for this historical time was anger, heartbreaking pain for what Sapphire and Bertha was going through. The inhumane mistreatment of people because of the color of their skin was disheartening. But Walling and all the others got their punishment.
