A bombing plot, a witch and the opening chapters of a civil war all walk into a bar... The joke's on Viktor, none of this is funny and his life is still dogshit, but at least he's a few coins richer and a single troublesome piece has been taken off his board.
Of course, the Stone God hates a man that thinks himself lucky. It would seem that Viktor's troublesome piece was taking orders from the city's wealthiest and most egomaniacal merchant, who doubtlessly doesn't consider the score settled. What's worse, the Church templars have heard of the use of rogue magic and decided to get themselves involved.
To top everything off, Viktor has gone and earned himself the enmity of one of the city’s most depraved families, he’s suffering from intermittent visions of a god he doesn’t believe in, and there's a frankly unsexy succubus harassing him in his dreams.
I think this is my favorite series of all time! I listen to 500+ pages every day on kindle text-to-speech and this is an almost perfect story. It's got almost anything you could ask for in a story. Its got violence, monsters, knights, damsels causing distress, snark and sarcasm, and I'm guessing #3 will have a bit of betrayal. The only thing I could suggest to improve the story would be more sex. Thanks for several interesting hours per book!
It is a fantasy that is dark, funny, lots of action and gore. Very much so keeps you thinking and engaged. The pages fly by and I love the depth of characters.
