What Matters takes place in the hospital "over a 24 hour a day bustle of medical activity and infuses the narrative while the care delivered to terminally ill Marten Forrestal is destined not to save his life but to ease his passing, it is nonetheless the sanctity of life and the honor that it should be accorded that tops the list of what matters for the medical profession" who were consulted for this book.
The author writes a testament so that his family and other people can learn from what he is living through right now, his impending death. It is another book written by someone who has been given a short amount of time to live presenting the same lessons ... be thankful, live in the moment, be brave, forgive etc...He will either get to the other side or he will get through it - either way it changes everything. It is the end of life here.
A lot of good lessons in this book and I thank the author for sharing personal details of his life in order to teach us, but I can't help but feel this is more for the not so typical family who did not experience much diversity in life. It reads like Ozzie and Harriet so to speak - which kept me at a distance rather than in the thick of it. Still lessons learned are meaningful and well presented to the reader.
