A Treatise on Hell's Terror

Rate this book
Christopher Love was born in Cardiff, Wales in 1618. He was converted at the age of 15, attended New Inn Hall, Oxford, and later assumed the pastorate of St. Lawrence Jewry in London, later becoming a Presbyterian. Because of Love’s political leanings he was arrested by Oliver Cromwell’s forces for his “alleged” plan to raise money for the restoration of the monarchy, a charge Love denied. He was arrested along with six other prominent ministers in London (all Presbyterians, including Thomas Watson), for treason. The rest were released after six months, but Love was beheaded on Tower Hill, London on August 22, 1651.This work is a treatise on one of the most hated doctrines in the Bible; a treatise on "hell." Love uses the text, “But rather fear Him which is able to destroy both body and soul in hell,” Matthew 10:28, as a foundation for all his queries and answers to this most dreadful subject. Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758), one the greatest preachers to ever live, kept a copy of Love’s works on hell in his library due to the graphic description and important nature of Love’s exposition. The weighty subject matter is presented in such a lively style and is so carefully applied that readers cannot help but be edified whether they are Christians or not. It is, without a doubt, one of the best works on hell ever written. This is not a scan or facsimile, and has been updated in modern English for easy reading. It also has an active table of contents for electronic versions.

A compilation of seven sermons on hell. Very readable book, full of worthwhile teaching. Should we live so as to avoid sin, or to avoid hell? Love points out that sin is worse than hell, since hell only exists because of sin. Therefore, men should strive to avoid sin.

Why is hell eternal since we sin in our temporal physical bodies which are bound to die? Love says that to ask the question underestimates the severity of sin and Whom we violate when we sin. All sin insults His eternal holiness and the only satisfaction is eternal punishment.

Many more keen insights and an excellent discussion on the doctrine of hell. Love also addresses the complete fraud and error of the Roman Catholic belief of purgatory.

A worthy and forward description of what awaits the lost sinner.

Christopher Love handles this doctrine with true care and severity. You can sense clearly by his writing, how he was moved by the terrible considerations of this dreadful and eternal place. May God bless the reader with a great sense of His majestic Holiness, and ultimately to a saving knowledge of His Son. Proverbs 9:10
