Hmmm.. I wanted to like this. I've read the first two in the Kate Lange series and really liked them. Kate is strong yet vulnerable. Dealing with a tough past (father who is a celebrity style criminal in their hometown and by the fact that Kate killed her younger sister in a car accident while trying to rescue her from drugs) while trying to make her career, and a life, for herself in Halifax. But her career as a lawyer has brought danger into her world more than once, and her past continues to haunt her.
In this installment Kate is heading toward the anniversary of her near death experience at the hand of the Body Butcher, an enemy she had to kill in order to survive. Kate is a strong lady but she was left scarred physically and emotionally after the incident, and left questioning her own moral code- she did have to kill a man, after all. Even in self defense the act has kept her up at night with horrible nightmares. And the man she loved, who was also in the heart of the drama, has left for a job in the states, leaving her feeling even more emotionally vulnerable. This man is also her superior in the law firm, so when Randall calls and requests that Kate see a client she can hardly refuse. Even though Mrs. Sloane is the mother of the girl Kate tried to save her sister from all those years ago, she knows she must- not only is it a professional obligation but Mrs. Sloane is dying from ALS with not long to live. Kenzi Sloane, on request from the dying mother she hasn't seen in 17 years since she fled the scene of a bizarre teenage ritualistic murder scene, returns to the scene of the crime just as an unsuspecting college student unearths a body from the bog near the Sloane residence. Coincidentally, John McNally, Kenzi's old sweetheart and partner in crime, is also released from Halifax prison ready to re-embark on his obsession to own Kenzi forever. Luckily for him, she is about to return to town after 17 years- just in time.

Cold case detective Ethan Drake, Kate's former fiance, is on the case, hoping to help the family of a young girl who went missing years ago while he was still a college student find closure. A girl whom he didn't know but was in one of his classes- who's body it is determined was found in the bog, murdered. This is not an easy task as every player in this story has their own agenda and the good guys are left having to follow the rules while trying to bring the correct suspects to justice. With Kate's professional and personal ties to the players and a game that started- surprisingly with her at the center of a diabolical game!- this turns into one big unbelievable story for me.

I liked the character Kate a great deal in the first two books. She still is a tough woman but, with all she's been through, she's more vulnerable and emotional in this one. Understandable. But she ruminates way too much over her thoughts and questions in this book for me. Over and over. And then when you think something nice will happen at the end, she's like, "Nah, forget it" What?! Her two love interests fell flat for me. Her life could clearly be at risk and they were both like, "No Kate don't do that," following with, "well, be careful!". I don't know. No one progressed in this book. The story sure came together with great technical precision! Like a well played chess game. And just as exciting. The coincidences that set it all up were too much for me to get into it at all.

Maybe the next one will return my enthusiasm for the series...

Another gripping thriller! I love the glimpses of Canadian culture and familiar places in the east coast. Callow describes settings in such exquisite yet concise detail that makes you feel like you’re there. And as a lover of the East Coast (and Ethan) - I wish I was!

I really love this series, but this addition was a little too petty for my liking.

The supposed villain's character (Kenzie) was very hypocritical and I found it very hard to believe that she would've acted the way she did.

Spoilers--
After Frances confessed to the murder it really didn't make ANY SENSE for Kenzie to go after Kate. If she had just left Halifax and moved on, she would have been fine and gotten away with it. Also McNally would have just seemed like a creepy stalker in this scenario and even if he confessed to the police there wouldn't be any evidence to convict Kenzie. It would just be the word of a crazy stalker convict vs Kenzie who had no criminal record. The only reason the police suspected Kenzie in the first place is 1) she has tattoos and lived by the bog 2) isn't liked by Kate. Not a strong case with no real hard evidence. Didn't Ethan learn in the last book not to pursue these shit cases?

It was a little obvious that Callow really loves her character Kate and wanted her to be proved right about her hatred for Kenzie. So she had Kenzie attack Kate even though it was a little forced and didn't really mesh with how Kenzie had been acting for the rest of the book. Kenzie went from a mature, successful artist to her high school self in a couple pages. This just made me lose respect for Kate because Kenzie shouldn't have to be torn down by the author just so Kate can get all the men and be justified in her petty vendetta. Kate can't pick a romantic interest but gets pissed that Finn dates Kenzie? That seemed to be her entire motivation against Kenzie. That and her guilt over Imogen's death, which WAS KATE'S FAULT. I don't care if Kenzie gave Imogen an entire case of drugs, Kate was still driving and caused the accident that killed Imogen. Its ridiculous to blame that on Kenzie.

Also apparently everyone could tell Kenzie was evil due to her eye color? Oh please. This is a pretty far stretch. And do people really even look that closely at each other and try to read each other's thoughts in their eyes? This got old really fast. Just because her eyes are a piercing color doesn't mean she is a villain. Besides, I loved Kenzie's art and her dog. I liked her more in this book then I did Kate.

So Callow demonized Kenzie in the last three chapters so Saint Kate could be forgiven and justified for killing Imogen and get Finn back. How pathetic. I really hope the next book is better because this one left a bad taste in my mouth. Kate, you had better get your romantic and personal shit together.

TATTOOED (Kate Lange)

TATTOOED by author Pamela Callow is a May 2012 release by Harlequin MIRA Books.

This was my first Kate Lange story but I was hooked from the first page. When the mummified body of a young girl is found and it is confirmed that it was of a girl vanished in 1990s, Detective Ethan Drake starts investigating and makes some shocking discoveries.

Kate Lange finds out that the body butcher blamed her for his incarnation and for saving her younger sister from being murdered by him. Now he is out of prison and the clock is ticking as he gets closer to her.

John, the body butcher, is looking for his partner in crime Kenzie. He gave her the first tattoo and now she runs a tattoo parlor. Kenzie panics when the body is discovered as she shared a tattoo with the victim. What will happen when he meets up with Kenzie? And when they come face to face with Kate?

TATTOO is a fast paced, thrilling and keeping me on the edge of seat story! The author Pamela Callow has packed this thriller with tension, danger and suspense.

4.5 out of 5 stars.

Kate is a lawyer with a firm in Halifax, NS. Frances Sloane is suffering from ALS and wants to be able to have an assisted suicide and hires Kate to take her case to allow her to do this. Frances, though, is the mother of Kenzie, a former friend of Kate's sister, Imogen. Many years ago, when Imogen was 15, she got involved with a party crowd, drinking and doing drugs. Kenzie, who was two years older, was the "queen bee" of that group. Kate blames Kenzie for influencing Imogen. One night during a party at Kenzie's, Kate, who was also two years older than Imogen, dragged her sister from the party. Driving home, Kate crashed the car and Imogen was killed. Kate has felt guilty about it ever since.

Frances asks Kenzie to come home since she knows she doesn't have long to live. Kenzie is now a successful tattoo artist in Manhattan and hasn't been home in years. John McNally, Kenzie's boyfriend from before she left home, has just been released from prison and is determined to find Kenzie. Lucky for him she has returned home to visit her mother.

Meanwhile, a body has been found in a bog and it's suspected it's a young girl who disappeared during a Mardi Gras party 17 years earlier.

This is the third book I've read by this author and I liked it. The assisted suicide was an interesting story line. Plus I liked the tattoo angle. I liked the writing style. It is written in third person perspective with the focus on wherever the action is. As a head's up, there is swearing and violence.

The author was raised and lives in Halifax (I was born and lived in Nova Scotia until I was in my twenties ... my sister lives in Halifax). I liked that the author set the story in Halifax and didn't make it look like it was Any Town, USA.

This is the third in the Kate Lange series (so far there are four and I read the two recently) and I look forward to reading the others in the series.

TATTOOED (Kate Lange: #3)
Written by Pamela Callow
2012; Mira (356 Pages)
Genre: series, fiction, mystery, law, canada

3.5 STARS

Kate Lange's past is coming front and center staring with France Sloan. Frances has ALS and wants Kate to lobby for assisted suicide on her behalf. Frances is the mother of Kenzie Sloan who was once friends with Imogen. It was Kenzie's house party that Kate dragged Imogen from and ultimately led to the car accident and Imogen's death. The memories flood back as Kenzie, now a tattoo artist, is coming to visit with her mother in her final days. Kenzie's former boy friend, McNally, has also been recently released from prison and has his sight on both Kenzie and Kate.

With Randall in New York, Kate is unsure where there relationship stands and if she should wait for him. Ethan Drake her former fiancee has decided he wants to try again and will do anything for her. In the next few days things from the past will bubble to the present and only some will make it through.

I love Kate Lange and this series. I like that it is set in Eastern Canada but not in Toronto (set in Nova Scotia). I remember the Sue Roderiguez case and how it affected everyone. I liked the plot of this book but it some how felt impersonal. Every sub-plot seemed a bit rushed but this is in comparison to rest of the series. I still liked this novel and would recommend this series

Staff Read #7-Pamela Callow's 'Tattooed' book 3 in her Kate Lange series.
After reading the first two books in the series I couldn't wait to read book three-Tattooed. This time Kate finds herself taking on the social issue of the day, medically assisted suicide for a client, and gets embroiled in a decade-old murder with ties to her late sister Imogen. As Kate is forced to remember her late sister's involvement with the people who are trying to kill her and bring these people to justice, she ends up face to face with the killers. With the characters I've come to love in her previous books and a climax that you can't put down, I once again thoroughly enjoyed this read. Can't wait to read her next instalment-Exploited!

This is the third installment with Kate Lange. However, Kate plays an important but small part in this story. The story actually revolves around two other characters. Although a good plot and a ton of suspense, I would have preferred Kate’s role to be more involving.

The villains in this story are very interesting and well developed. The ending was realistic and not the typical cookie cutter ending of most stories. I thought that the author was particularly brave in this matter.

If you like a fast-paced, suspenseful, and at times brutally violent story, this story will more than satisfy you.

While it can be said that one of my favorite reading genres is mystery suspense thrillers this one was not exactly what I expected and it is hard to pinpoint exactly why. Suffice to say it kept my attention and had some good scenes that played well to the characters cast by the author, also unfortunately it did not cohesively gell for me at the end so that was kind of a letdown. Some threads in the story were deftly tied up and others were never explored or left open ended and that is not what I expected to happen at the end.

The one thing that really struck me was the beauty of the tattoo's described that Kenzie had inked on her body and the meanings behind them were very inspiring to learn, body ink will never be for me but it is an art form that is fascinating nonetheless and is explored quite well here and there as part of the storyline.

The story was interesting. I learned a lot about tattoos. I liked how incidents from 17 years prior were wrapped up in events going on now. It did seem a wee bit too coincidental that everyone from the two sets of events were connected and knew each other. All in all, it worked, though. There was plenty of technical forensics stuff in the first half and a good bit of action in the second half. When I picked this one up, I didn't realize that it was the third book in the Kate Lange series, so maybe I will check the library to see if they have the previous 2.

I always look forward to the next book in the Kate Lange series. Each one proves even better than the one before and TATTOOED was no exception. Clever and edgy, I was on the edge of my seat, flipping the pages madly to see what would happen next. Pamela Callow is one writer not to be missed. If you haven't read DAMAGED or INDEFENSIBLE, do yourself a favour and pick up the three pack to kick off your summer reading. If you have read them, rush out and pick up TATTOOED. You'll be glad you did!

I really liked this book and thought I should write it down so I wouldn't forget.

I liked it because the author was able to make likable-type villains. The books's regular change in perspective allowed for the story to unravel through the eyes of both Kate as well as Kenzie's. I will admit, by the end, I didn't completely like Kenzie as a character. I thought she deserved to go to prison, however this book got me to question that thought for a long time.

As I read, I was convinced Kenzie wasn't the "villain" in this story because her narrative seemed so personal and logical. I thought, "Clearly, at one point we'll learn that she is actually innocent." Yet, that doesn't happen. Kenzie transforms little by little into this antagonizing character that I learned to really appreciate. It perplexed me for the longest time. We got to know Kenzie at such a personal level that she obtained a purpose beyond that of the "villain." She was a tattoo artist with a passion that rivaled that of few and a daughter with an adorable love for her small dog. She became a person beyond that of a two dimensional "villain."

Callow's seamless writing put to question whether someone who created such beauty could also be evil. And she did it in a fantastic way. Not many books have achieved that, and I usually don't write anything after I finish a book so that should speak for itself.

This book brought to life how people aren't black or white but an incredible mix of grays. Even the supposed "hero," Kate, fell into some dark depths of her mind as she prepared to shoot Kenzie.

I can still say I didn't like Kenzie as a character, but I definitely appreciate what she meant to the story. I really enjoyed this book especially its way of showing the complexity of morality in our own society and recommend it to anyone.

Realistic and engrossing

I have now read the first three of Ms. Callow's Kate Lange books and I am looking forward to starting the fourth, which I already have on my Kindle, and hopefully more after that (though I notice that it has now been almost two years without sign of a fifth). The stories seem realistic and certainly engrossing. I like the detailed character development and the way the author portrays how the major players are thinking about what they are feeling and doing. This is quite lacking in most mystery and thriller books I find interesting. I also like that while the plots are complicated, they are not so much so that I lose track of the characters. It is also good that none of the lead players are beyond faults and frustrations. While probably not necessary, I think it is a good idea to read the books in sequence, as the main characters carry on and their history and development are important and interesting. I highly recommend.

Wow😃

Ok, each time I read another of these books in this series, I say wow! How can they keep getting better? But they do..... It's so amazing how good this was. I couldn't put it down and slammed through it faster than the first two! I hate to think the next one, the fourth is the only one left but it is. I know she's working on a fifth, but it won't be done fast enough for me. I love this series. This one, Tattooed, is very suspenseful and exciting. It also is very emotional in parts and I had a hard time reading those sections. I just couldn't believe how they affected me. The assisted suicide issue was provocative. The use of the dogs in each of her stories gets me as I'm an avid dog lover. In each book we are introduced to a new doggie. Alaska, Charlie, and now a pug named Foo. Loving it! Frances dedication to her daughter had me blubbering like a baby. Loved this book.

I raved about Callow’s Kate Lange series in my last review. This book was great, albeit not as strong as the first two.

Character development wise it felt a bit stagnant. Perhaps that was the point, since a lot of the story was based in the past and there were plenty flashbacks throughout to tease us about the truth. I love Kate’s character and the vulnerability shown was honest. I hoped for more traction with the Randall Vs. Ethan story (see my note for a midway highlight) but didn’t get it. The story itself was brilliant though and despite the nagging frustration of development, I was enraptured with the details of history and how it had been thrown into current day.

I’m moving on to book 4, still excited and hopeful that we get a bit more in terms of characters!

Tattooed by Pamela Callow is the 3rd book in her Kate Lange series, and the 3rd I’ve read in as many weeks. I’m very much looking forward to starting the 4th book tonight.

I’m really enjoying these fast-paced Thrillers, which are set in Halifax, Nova Scotia just across the bridge from where I live. In this novel, one of the villains did take a side trip to Rainbow Haven, which is located close to where I reside, which was incredibly neat to read. But with Callow’s characters being so realistic and well written, I ask that the murders be kept on that side of the bridge; I’d like to sleep at night.

Another great book by Pamela Callow... now I want a tattoo, well maybe. The love a mother has for a daughter, and how far she will go to protect her. I'm hoping for Kate, she has been through so much, I'm still wondering why she and Ethan broke up. That guy loves her. You will not put this book down, you want to know what happens the research she must have done to write this is amazing. Yet I know there is something coming for Finn, and Randall and Kate or will it be Kate and Ethan. People read this series you will love the suspense. I so recommend this.

Pamela Callow Does it Again!

I love the Kate Lange Thriller series! Her characters are so real, and most of them, Ethan, Randall, Finn, Enid and Muriel are loveable! The romantic tension between her and her one time boss has Kate on edge, and one time fiance, Ethan, has always been there too! Both men are trying to keep her, while she's trying to do right by her clients and not get killed! And it's like one continuous story that I can't wait to read the next chapter, the next book! Settle in for a good read!

Pretty sure I got started on this series from Amazon Prime Reading. LOVED them! Didn't want them to end. And Pamela Callow writes so enticing that she made me (someone who's not a fan of really cold, snowy weather) want to visit Halifax, Canada. Sounds goregous in all the seasons, even fall and winter. This was such a great series that I didn't want to end. I could keep reading more and more from this series.

To be honest… I was a little disappointed... I really enjoyed the first two books. I'm not even sure what it was about this one, the storyline wasn't bad, it was a bit all over the place though... it ended kind of abruptly, too many unanswered questions for me.
But based on her first two books, I'm going to check out the fourth book.

A very good book with characters you can relate to

All of the books in this series have characters who are easy to relate to and who are realistic in their strengths and weaknesses. Unlike many authors, Pam doesn't have her main character "fall" in love with every good looking guy who comes along. Very refreshing to read.

Kate Lange triumphs again.

The authors Kate Lange series of the lawyer, her dogs and friends continues the saga of Kates involvement in mystery and suspenseful cases. This one a bit more personal as her sister was an intended victim, who met her death in an accident before her killers could do the job. A good read for a weekend at the shore or at home before the fire.
