I picked up 12 pounds during three years in Germany. It was all on my middle. On return to the States, I resolved to tame the tummy. This book may have helped. Hard to say because I changed my diet fairly substantially, cutting refined sugars to 15g or less per day and cutting most fats. I did drop the weight and bulge. Over the following 20 years, the weight crept back on. I learned a near-vegetarian diet (I kept eating eggs, some dairy, and fish) can be as or more fattening than an omnivore diet. I knocked the excess (23 pounds) off in 2017 through caloric restriction and continuing an exercise regimen anchored by hiking. I did consult my doctor and had 6-month physicals. I've been able to keep the weight off. I think my most effective tool has been Underarmour's Map My Run app, which I use primarily to log my food intake but also to track hikes. (I don't run much. Bad for knees.)

I did the belly and back exercises on and of over the years. The plus is they don't require a gym or specialized equipment.
