Wulf's Den #1

Beowulf and Roxie

Rate this book
When Roxie and her friend, Candice, decided on a girls' night out she didn't realize Wulf's Den would be more than she had anticipated. But Roxie soon learned to expect anything. The presence of a super-abundance of super good looking men surprised her, and when the best of the bunch stared at her as if he wanted to devour her, surprise turned to amazement.

Beowulf recognized her as his mate the instant she crossed his path and her scent filled his lungs. But he had to overcome one hurdle. She was not one of his kind--a werewolf. He had waited for years to find his mate and he would claim her even if she was a mortal. He would soon teach her all about werewolves.

Roxie is caught up in strange events. Archaic markings appear on her wrist, and strong forces threaten to tear her away from her love as two other male werewolves try to claim her as their own. Would Roxie and Beowulf be able to keep the bond love had forged or would they lose each other forever?

1 Bored AF Stars

**************Some Spoilers***********************

108 pages that should have taken me no more than a few hours to read. Instead It took me 4 days. I was so bored with this book, that I stopped reading it to clean the house. All readers know that is a bad sign. I felt no connection to either Beowulf or Roxie. Beowulf was kind of a d-bag. Roxie was stupid and annoying. I didn't give two shits about either of them. The book, the plot and the love story were flat, and one dimensional. I didn't like any of the choices the characters made. The villain was lame and his punishment was ridiculous. The whole Great Grandpa wanting to be mated to Great Granddaughter thing was nasty af. Truly I didn't like any part of this book. I bought the whole series years ago and now it's a waste because I will not be reading the rest.

Wow! If you are a Paranormal Romance Erotica fan or a reader who enjoys your Werewolf Fiction amorous, this is the book for you!

Beowulf and Roxie (Wulf's Den, #1) by Marisa Chenery is a creative werewolf story. The novel has some foundation in the Old English epic poem of Beowulf. What a neat idea to add to a story and put your own spin on it!

In the beginning of the story, Roxie is obligated to go out for a night on the town with her friend, Candice. Soon after the duo arrive at the night club (Wulf's Den), Roxie encounters Beowulf and they have a strong and immediate attraction to one another.Roxie is not aware of the werewolf culture around her. However, she becomes quickly embroiled in it once she and Beowulf become involved.

The character development in the story is strong, especially for erotic literature, in my humble opinion. The reader becomes bewitched with the main and secondary characters. This helps knit together a tight story with an interesting plot and sweltering affection between the destined mates.

Happy Reading from Bona Fide Reflections!

My reaction to this book can be described like this:
What?
God, what a douchecanoe.
Huh?
Why?
Wait, is he Roxanne's mother's father or her great-something grandfather? Either way...
Ew.
Oh, you've gotta be kidding me. A jealousy ploy? How old are you, 12?
I give up. Thank the gods of promotional giveaways I didn't pay for this.

Roxie doesn't know how she let her best friend talk her into going to the Wulf's Den, but she did and now finds herself staring at the most handsome man she has ever met. Roxie has never been the type to go clubbing or pick up random men, she is more a homebody and although the heat she feels when she is with Beowulf is startling she is not willing to just jump in the sack to satisfy a need.

Beowulf knows Roxie is his mate, but curiously enough she is putting up quite a fight resisting the bond between them. He knows he should tell her that he is a shifter, he knows he should divulge that he is indeed the Beowulf that stories are told about, but mostly he just wants her to get comfortable with being his mate and not keep running off. When an ancient marking appears on her wrist, it appears there is more to Roxie than he imagined putting not only her life in danger but the fate of the pack in her hands.

Great story, I enjoyed that Roxie was skittish and she had to think things through before she just succumbed to her fate. Has a very interesting twist in the story that I thought really elevated the tale.

After reading this book I can't help but question "why did I just spend 2 hours of my time reading this?"

I can't stand wishy washy characters and if there ever was one that's the perfect example of that it's Roxie. One minute she pushing Beowulf away and determined not to give in to his advances, but the minute he whips out his penis BAM she's a simpering, head over heels in love female.
The family is this book drive me nuts! Honestly, you know there is a chance that she may have some wolf in her and the minute she started having the dreams she should've been told. Not hiding a secret that probably would've made her life easier.
Beowulf is just too Alpha for me. I never thought I'd say that, but he's so alpha he might as well just chain Roxie up with a gag in her mouth.

All in all this was a terrible book, and I have to admit I'm glad I got this for free.

2.3 stars. Wow, so sex and shapeshifters, not much else to this story except stupidity. I couldn't believe how dumb they acted and it was accepted. Like Beowulf telling Roxie you will do what I tell you to do to keep you safe right after she just got person napped under his care and she had to rescue herself?!? Why didn't he have other pack mates watching over her when he knew she was in danger?!? Then he just gave her up?!? Then he went to the fight knowing it was to the death, but he was just going to let him go and keep Roxie in danger, what was the point?!? He also knew he would cheat and bring people with him, but he still went alone?!? No wonder their kind has been dying out - they need smarter leadership!

I loved this book it was so much fun to read. The story of Beowulf and Grendel has been taken into the 21st Century.
Roxie has been persuaded by her friend Candice to go clubbing. They land at the Wulf's Den a bar in San Francisco. Roxie and Beowulf eyes meet and they instantly feel a connection. Okay so I kinda predicted what would happen but it still didn't matter. I loved the book.

My first ever two star rating. It wasn't bad but it wasn't good either. The writing came across short and choppy to me. The story was kind of bleh and there was really no character development. I had to force myself to finish this book.

It wasn't bad but it was very short and even that it showed shifters in a slightly different way it wasn't anything special and it didn't make me want to turn the pages quickly or to be exited to see how it would end. And as I mentioned the end it was kind of ordinary and boring.

Confuso y superficial

*SPOILER ALERT*

Roxie is the stereotypical introverted geek girl who has a BFF who wants to change that. Taking her to Club 'Wulf's Den' for a fun night of socializing, Roxie attracts the eye of a studly example of eye candy guy who would like nothing better than to get her alone and have some one on one quality time in his bed. She runs from him before he can find out her name, phone number, or address.

Beowulf, leader of his wolf pack, is stunned to discover that his destined mate has just walked into his club. Not wasting any time he separates her from her friend to claim her in the age old way of his kind. He's waited for way too long to delay for even a minute. He's stunned when Roxie runs from him before he can find out who she is or where she lives. Silly human. Beowulf is now on the hunt and his prey is Roxie.

First in book series for a shapeshifter series revolving around the "Wulf's Den" and men from a wolf pack. Good premise with the author featuring some luscious eye candy alpha men who have no control over themselves when they spot their mate. Little do the women realize how their lives are about to change which is the case in this book. I did like the central characters and can see future development of the cast of secondary characters. I already have some favorites from that secondary list so can't wait to see Carl and Wade's story. There are others but with a possible spoiler alert potential I can't mention them.

Back to the book. There is an adventure/intrigue storyline going on here that I enjoyed. A significant twist that occurs did make it even better. My issue though was that the overall world building and layering were just too problematic. There are times I felt like I was getting whiplash as the different characters flip flopped back and forth and details became inconsistent. An example of that is when one of the characters has an ankle injury yet in the next scene it isn't an issue anymore. It would have seemed that this should have been followed through and addressed with that character. That IS a minor spoiler free example but there were many others. After a while it became too much to the point that I felt I could only enjoy the story on a superficial level.

As to the adult content portions of this book. The author did make a good attempt to pull the reader into enjoying the scenes and play between the characters however I did start to actually skip through these in the later portion of the book as it was more repetitive except for the fact that they happened in different places. Anyone who knows my reading tastes will understand why that's unusual for me.

This was an enjoyable read that has that suspense type of thing going on. The bad guy slant and twist to the story do add some mystery and challenge you mentally but can't say that I'm a real fan but will be checking out future installments to see where this goes.

Title: Beowolf and Roxie

Review: This book was recommended to me through Goodreads, based on other selections that I liked. And they did not go wrong! While the book IS very typical of the werewolf genre, there are a enough twists and turns to keep you interested. It's interesting even from the start, but it really starts picking up toward the middle of the book. And the further along things went, the better the book became! By the end, the author had really won me over. My main critique on the book is just that I can't imagine a set of parents keeping so much stuff from their daughter when it comes to her heritage - particularly when she comes to them and is obviously upset and worried. They instead wait until everything has gone to crap before they tell her! That was a bit hard to buy for me, but really just a small thing overall. I was excited to discover that Chenery has continued on, giving other characters in the novel their own books...I look forward to continuing on with the series and reading even more by this author!

Even though it is a pretty short book - only 108 pages - I did not feel as though it was skimpy. The characterization that is missed in so many short stories was there, as was a clear depth of emotion between Roxie and Beowulf. Even the secondary characters are fairly well drawn out for such a short book.

Roxie hates going out to clubs and would rather stay at home (which I love because I am so like that and therefore understand her pretty well). She is dragged out to the Wulf's Den by her friend, and meets Beowulf. I thought it was a little odd that Beowulf was the bartender in this obviously uber successful club that he owned. Couldn't he afford to hire a bartender? Or did he just really like bartending? That seemed a little off, and is just the type of thing that pokes at me.

Roxie is of course his mate. I am such a sucker for true mates, and they are what keep me coming back to these werewolf/paranormal books. Unconditional love. *sigh* Beowulf is slightly stalkerific at first - as he is having a hard time controlling his instincts to claim his mate, and Roxie naturally is freaked out by him since she is human. Nonetheless, they hook up quickly. I really like both characters individually as well as together. I won't go into more of the story, since because it was so short I'd pretty much give everything away :)

What I also never got, was all of a sudden, since Roxie is now with Beowulf she is expected to go to the club every night. Why? To watch Beowulf bartend and sit by herself when she hates clubs/bars and has work to do? I would understand her needing to be at the bar once there was a real threat to Roxie, but that is not the reason at first. It just seemed weird, and was another huge pet peeve for me about this book.

Aside from that, and the whole thing with Royce that creeped me out (read the book and you'll know what I'm talking about), I really liked this one and will definitely be checking out more of the series.

A Pages of Desire review

This was one of my first ventures into the world of erotic novels...I know, I know, I'm terribly late in the game but give me a break. When I first read this I found it to be damn near terrible, but then after I read more books I realized this was no where near the threshold of 'erotic' terrible.

There is one thing that automatically gets a star from me, and that's retelling of old tells...if you do it really well it may earn you two stars. So the concept of a Beowulf erotic novel caught my attention, and after I got over my slightly prudish ways I downloaded it and dug in. This is certainly not a book most people work to retell, and they certainly don't tend to tread where Chenery has boldly gone. It's a really creative look on the old tell and it has most of the elements. It even has Grendel! Though, while I'm on that point...I thought Grendel was an angry cheeseball. Not my favorite character at all. There is some decent character development, which is great in a book where you know the sex is inevitable. I did have issues with the main character Roxie. She has some serious issues standing by her own opinions, I understand denial and all..but come on girl! Get it together.
Another slight pet peeve of mine is when someone uses the same word a lot, in this case it's their names. When I talk to someone I do not say their name every time, it's...stupid. They know I'm talking to them. The writing did feel slightly off at times but it didn't really stop me from enjoying it, and by the end of the book it was pretty solid.

The heat level is certainly hot at times and doesn't disappoint. There was a tiny part involving a character named Royce that made me cringe and immediate hate him though. I personally could have done with out that little addition.
Overall it's a short, fast paced, and enjoyable read. I will probably look into getting the second one in the series.

What Is It About:
Beowulf is the owner of a club called Wulf's Den, it's known for it's attractive patrons and staff. That's because they're all werewolves. Roxie is dragged to the club by her friend Candice and she's instantly attracted to the bartender. Beowulf knows that she's his the instant that he smells and sees her. But there's more to it than just trying to get Roxie to understand werewolves; Roxie mysteriously gets a rune on her wrist, Beowulf's enemy tries to take Roxie to hurt him and another werewolf is trying to claim Roxie away from him.

What I Liked and Didn't:
I must admit that I do like me some werewolf romance. There were parts of the plot that I liked and parts that I didn't really enjoy. Beowulf vs. Gren was a decent plot because it makes sense that Roxie would be a target and it had action without being too over-dramatic. I didn't like the Royce plot, not one bit. Sure, he seems nice but the fact that he wants to mate with Roxie even though they're linked, it's just kinda creepy and disgusting no matter how distant. Roxie's powers are a pretty original plot, I think that it works well mainly because of Roxie herself. She's the sassy and bad-ass character except when she's scared while Beowulf is the tough and caring one that will do anything to protect her. I liked them as a couple and thought that they really made the story, with or without all the drama.

Final Thoughts:
I'd originally read this four years ago and I suppose my tastes haven't changed too much because I still like the book but I just couldn't keep it at the four star rating that I'd originally given it. I think it's just because it's a bit short so parts of it were pretty rushed.
Would I recommend it? Sure, I'd say that out of all Marisa Chenery's werewolf books, these are the better ones.
Will I be carrying on the series? Definitely.

Beowulf is the owner of ‘Wulf’s Den’ a bar meeting place for werewolves in San Francisco. Roxie is a work-from-home web designer who never gets out until her BF Candace drags her onto a night on the town. Their first stop is ‘Wulf’s Den’ where Beowulf is there to ‘catch’ are she falls.

At first there was too much male aggressiveness and inconsideration for me. I almost decided not to finish story, but decided to give it a full book chance. Took up to the sixth chapter to get to any real werewolf story or plot. Before that it was just an aggressive male stalking and forcing himself on a surprised and unwilling female thinking he knows best and she’ll come around. Makes me wish that all the female characters in romance books had the same talent Roxie has. Would serve them right.

Now I’m glad I did finish the story, though I did skim through a lot of the sex stuff. I’m not a fan of reading page after page of sex descriptions. That just gets boring. I’d rather have 1 or 2 well written hot scenes that enhance the plot, than filling the book with second by second, inch by inch, throw everything-into-the-pot descriptions. A little anticipation and some clever hints go a long way.

I like the direction Roxie’s character is going. But the thing with her parents not telling her was awkward. Looking forward to see how the next book develops. But again there’s my pet peeve: humans taking finding out about supes too calmly. Like that would really happen.

Quick thought: 1)I used to live near SF and have been to Muir woods several times. There are several little pockets like that along the California coast all the way up to Canada. They’re beautiful and peaceful.

Fave Scenes: the wine bottle, rare hamburgers, the tattoo, Roxie’s ultimatum to Royce and her parents and the very bad dog

Okay. In some ways I don't know how I feel about this book. It's not terrible by any means but it felt a little on the uneven side. I don't even know if I can pinpoint what it was that made me feel this way. I just know that there were times I wanted to smack Roxie up alongside the head and tell her to either stick to her guns or shut up.

There was a teeny, tiny little squick factor thing that made me make a face. I'm not going to go into too much detail since it's fairly important to the story, but I have one thing to say about it... YUCK. And considering I'll read almost anything the fact that this made me feel dirty on the inside is impressive.

Like I said before, it's not a terrible story. The writing felt much more solid by the end of the book, which either means it evolved nicely or I stopped noticing that every time one character spoke to another character they said character's name. When there are only two people in a room having a conversation, the constant use of proper names takes away from the flow of the dialogue. At least for me.

Good- not great- but interesting enough and a fair start to a series.

Roxie is once again dragged out to a club by her outgoing friend and just sits sipping on her wine until she can duck out without being thought of as ditching her friend. While sitting alone she makes eye contact with the hot bartender and feels an odd attachment, but of course makes a fool of herself and doesnt trust their strong seeming connection. She tries to avoid him but of course he seeks her out endlessly and she gives in slowly but surely, of course her friend's pushing her into it helps a bit. Beowulf happens to be the Alpha werewolf of a pack but hasnt quite told Roxie and is surprised to become mated to a human. To complicate matters his enemy is lurking nearby seeing Roxie as a way to get at him, and the old Alpha turned lone wolf seems to have quite an interest in Roxie as well.
This book was pretty cool. Liked the turn of events with her quite a bit. She is pretty kick ass at the end. Was a bit annoyed that she just forgave some of Beowulf's crap though, but guess that just goes with the territory of that whole mate storyline. Cant wait to see which wolf next falls prey to the whole mate deal

I started out thinking this book would be okay but it just got worse and worse until by the end I didn't like it at all. Disliked the premise that becoming a mate made it almost more likely that said mate would be challenged for by other werewolves. Royce's appearance and his refusal to speak of the connection between him and Roxie is annoying and pointless and when all is finally 'revealed' and he still wants to pursue her it's just all a bit too yuck for me. Plus Beowulf easily gives up his right to his mate which I just can't stand and of course eventually everything previously obtuse in the story becomes blindingly clear at the end as well as nicely pat and convenient. Just hated it.

I am slightly ashamed to admit this but...I may have read the Protectors series before reading this book. And I may have said some unflattering things about Roxie in my reviews. That being said I stand by my previous reviews for those books but I don't understand her drastic personality change. She is so different in that series she may as well be a totally different character. I liked her much better in this book than in the Protectors series because of this.

I really liked this book... It had my attention from the moment I started reading it... It's a quick read . The twist in it close to the end through me for a loop at first because I thought it was going a certain direction... Was glad to find out it didn't turn out the way I thought it might. All in all it was a good intro to the series... Definitely gonna read the rest at some point ...

Ok I was surprised I liked the book. What made me give it a 4 star because I did not see the whole Royce thing coming. That kind of threw things off for me. I am interested to see how the rest of the series turns out. The book was well written and I liked the hot guys. Roxie was a little clumsy but to each it's own. On to book 2...

It felt far too long for 108 pages. Managed to make it half way before I decided I didn't care at all about these characters, so what was the point of finishing? The sex was hot but the people were dumb!!! Beowolf was your typical overbearing alpha male, Roxie your typical tstl female. I read this book because I liked the others very much. But I was a little disappointed, because it wasn't as good as them. It was simple, with not much of a twist and sometimes I kinda bored during the story. I can't say much of this book. I didn't dislike it, it was quite good, but I missed something that I can't name it...
