Granny Is My Wingman

Rate this book
At twenty-three, Kayli Stollak, like most starry-eyed twentysomethings, assumed that she and her boyfriend, Charlie, would be together forever. Besides a rockin’ sex life, they shared a passion for motorcycle adventures, hedonistic European music festivals, and wearing matching glittery spandex to the disco. What more could a gal ask for? She envisioned their love burning well into their sixties.

And then he dumped her.

Heartbroken, Kayli turned to her seventy-five-year-old granny for support. And this ain’t no ordinary granny. Granny Gail is a ball-busting, sh*t-talking, gossipy yenta with an anecdote or piece of unsolicited advice for every situation. Granny didn’t sugarcoat the truth or let Kayli dwell on her failed relationship. No, Granny told her to cut the crap and snap out of it. Why didn’t Kayli give “one of those dating websites” a shot? With her ego on the line, Kayli threw the dare right back at her—if it was so wonderful, why didn’t single Granny join her in the world of cyber romance?

Granny Is My Wingman chronicles Kayli’s and Granny’s misadventures in online dating. What ensues is a hilarious tour through the obstacles of modern drunken hookups, late-night Facebook stalking, breathy phone calls with geriatric suitors, and the occasional rude dude. While Kayli powers through a marathon of OkCupid dates—the corporate drone married to his BlackBerry, the nail-biting thirty-three-year-old who still lives at home with his mom, the serial online dater—we learn about Granny’s romantic past and the bittersweet affair she carried on, even while married, for more than thirty years. The two women cheer each other on and become even closer as they share their dating exploits, learning that the hunt for happiness is the same whether you’re twenty-five or seventy-five.

Fresh, funny, and honest, Granny Is My Wingman is a book for anyone who has ever found love, lost it, and been crazy enough to do it all over again.

If you had a friend who was 24, gorgeous, with "a perky pair of 34Ds" but a tiny ass, and had a nightclub job that paid $100K a year for three nights a week work, would you be interested in hearing about her dating problems? Then this is the book for you.

Kayli Stollak does no favors for her fellow NYU film alumni. Her self absorbed, somewhat misadventures left me wondering whether her Kenyan humanitarian efforts were simply a farce for taking in regular safari's and admiration.

If you are looking to give your brain a rest--then this book might be your wingman.

This was one of the stupidest books I've ever read. The only saving grace is that Granny was the voice of reason--and the only interesting character--in the (highly annoying/privileged) author's "exploits".

Well I thought at first this was going to be a fictionalized story of one woman's dating life with her grandmother by her side. However, after I received the book I was surprised to find that "Granny is my Wingman" is a blog by Kayli Stollak and she is actually a memoir of her dating life in New York after she broke up with her long-time boyfriend.

First things first, I found this to be a funny book. Ms. Stollak manages to strike the right tone between funny, and wistful about what could have been between her and her ex. I also love that she pulls no punches about how she spiraled after the relationship ended and how she was still finding her footing in her personal and professional life. When she ultimately comes to the conclusion that she needs to get back out there and start to date once again (after being pushed to do so by her Granny) online dating seems to be the easiest thing to do. She and her Granny both decide to start dating again and cheer each other on throughout their dating escapades.

Frankly I would love to meet some of these guys that Kayli and her grandmother went out with. They sound like the crazier brothers of the guys I had a misfortune of meeting through Eharmony and OKCupid as well.

The main reason why I did not give this a full five stars was that even though each chapter is quick and to the point and Ms. Stollak provides sufficient details sometimes I wish she slow down in her storytelling so as a reader I got more of a chance to submerge myself in the cast of characters we were meeting. Ms. Stollak remarks about her mother and sister but we don't really get a chance to know them since she focuses all of her attention on her grandmother's backstory and her (Ms. Stollak's personal life). I felt like her mother and sister were merely cardboard caricatures which would have been nice to get to know. Also she rapidly runs through all of the guys she is meeting but choosing to linger on some of them and not all.

I do know that some readers out there may not find the subject matter to their liking since there are sexual situations depicted within the reading and also some details about affairs that went on. I would say if that is not your cup of tea just skip this book and move on to something else.

I really recommend this and based on how it ends I doubt we will see a sequel anytime soon but am looking forward to reading more writing by Ms. Stollak in the future.

Please note that I received this novel for free via the Amazon Vine Program.

Funny and insightful!

Personally, I don't think I'll be trying online dating soon, and that's not because I think of it negatively. Dating in general is not something I'm up to. (And that is entirely attributable to me being selectively social. LOL.)

What do I love about this book? I love Granny! She's not your typical acerbic grandmother! True, she has her eccentricities but I love that she's up for online dating even at her age. Most old people I know wouldn't even bother trying to learn how to use a computer, or even a celphone, and would rather settle into a dull routine instead of challenging themselves to try something new. In this personal account, I love how quirky and fun granny was. I also love how she freely doles out advice to her granddaughter and even going as far as to share her own story of infidelity. I am not in favor of infidelity, but there was definitely a lesson to be learned in Granny's indiscretion.

And the dates were hilarious! They weren't laugh out loud funny for me, but they were definitely entertaining. This personal account just goes to show that if you're just open to meeting new people, the world can surprise you in a lot of ways. Most of the dates in this book were disastrous, but thinking about them would definitely bring a smile on your face.

The only downside to this book is that some part were dragging and I had to force myself to read through them. I'd have to say that this story isn't a page-turner, but it's a charming book full of dating lessons and funny bits.

This was an easy and quick read, but it was not very interesting. I've read other blogs and books based on people's dating experiences, and this one fell flat. I liked hearing about the grandma's dating exploits, but we only got glimpses into her side of things. It was also hard to shake the feeling of entitlement and superiority the author had-- she works in a nightclub making 6 figures and "oh, did I mention I run a charity? Let me tell you all about my African charity..." Instead of it making her dynamic, she seemed braggy and snooty. In the end, I didn't care whether or not she found someone worthy to date, or even how her life would turn out. A very "meh" book.

It sucks. I mean, there was no story line. All there was dating and dating and dating. Oh and shagging too. At every page turn, I was hopping that now I will find something that forms a story line. Something worth reading. But nothing. This books didn't stand to my expectation.
In my opinion, DO NOT BUY IT, DO NOT READ IT. Its not worth the time. There are millions if good books out there, books that are must read before you die. So read them and don't waste you time and money on this one.

Funny... Hilarious actually. Three stars simply because it was very middle of the road and enjoyable but I could put it down for a bit

This book was one of those quick reads and it was rather cute. The author tells her story of her and her grandmother’s adventures in online dating. Kayli talks about her heartbreak of a breakup and then giving into the temptation to go on Facebook (big mistake) to see what is going on with her ex.

And then…she sees him with another woman…and engaged. (I told you that was a mistake).

Now, with the advice and butt kicking (metaphorically) from her grandmother, they both decide to get back into the dating world and sign up for online profiles. The book goes into details of Kayli’s different dates from online.

There is a lawyer is above himself and demeans her for her choice of a job (working at a bar) – and then gets all pervy.

There’s the guy who was into S&M and he and this other woman are wondering about a third partner – that was actually kind of funny.

And then there’s the one who apparently makes it a full-time, unpaying, job to online date – as in he’s gone on numerous dates with numerous women from numerous dating sites. Yeah.

Her grandmother has the same kind of luck. There is one where the guy takes one look at Kayli’s grandmother and turns and walks away. Talk about rude!!

The story is cute. It’s not a mind blowing wonderful read. There are a lot of details about the different dates Kayli goes on, which gets kind of old and a bit tedious (but she does meet one guy she likes). It’s a quick read and every now and then you get a couple of chuckles.

I would say if you wanted something quick and give you a few laughs, I’d say this is the one for you, but don’t have too many expectations.

While it's not at all a 'Must read', I would recommend it if you are looking for some light, easy read.

This is a memoir of this girl who just broke up with her long-term boyfriend and tries online dating. It is funny at times; at times it might be thought-provoking too, but most of the time it is just like a ehm... somewhat self-obsessed friend ranting about her dating life.

Totally a one-time read.

Hilarious book with LOL moments

I chose this rating because I truly loved this book. I was close to my Grandma but not like these 2 characters. I loved the dialog and the witty comebacks. I enjoyed the dating scenarios and I could actually picture myself in these situations when I was single and on an online dating site. There wasn't anything I didn't like about this book. I highly recommend it as a fun read.

Ridiculous book. Bad language. Good books don’t need cursing in them. Maybe someone likes it but I’m not interested in 1 night stands described in a book. No plot, just dates, if you can call them that. Definitely won’t be wasting my time on this author again. I’ve learned this actually came from a blog.

The Young And The Old Are Restless

She had just gotten a divorce. She needed someone to be her confidante and who did she find? The stand-alone year old and her 76 year old granny joined a dating site together😇😈

This book is an insight into the new dating world for singles, both young & old. It’s a fun light read which provides insights into how much society has changed. Men appear to have the advantage still and these 2 spunky women try to span the divide & adapt.
No need to read more into it!

Same old story with a new cover, the good thing about it is her granny. Clearly makes you stereotype men and women in general.

Kayli was good at weaving a tale. I was only left with one question of she ended up with her love interest or not. Her dates were amazing and ludicrous. This was such a fun quick read.

Short but sweet and y'know, I really enjoyed it. I picked it up as a book to read that was a different sort of read because my usual thriller/crime genre was giving me too many nightmares and I'm so glad that I did.

It's funny, its heartwarming, and cheesy. I loved the dynamic between Granny and Kayli, and their forays into online dating. As someone in a long term relationship, it made me so grateful that I dont have to do the whole dating people but the book read as if it was a best friend telling you about all of their disasters and fun.

I'd definitely read another book by this author.

I have to say that I had a eeeeehhh, hem, personal connection with the author. It is the one and only time that I have known an author who I have read. All of this is to say that I enjoyed the book in part because I knew some of the characters. It is a good, light read. For me, it was nice to come home from a stressful job to read something that I could enjoy and not have to cry about. (I think that my opinion is very shaded by having started and not having been able to finish The Crossing by Cormac McCarthy directly before reading this).

This was a fun and entertaining read about the author's year of online dating. Kayli with her Granny as sidekick decided to tackle online dating after a finding out her ex-boyfriend has moved on and started a relationship. From building up a profile to going on dates both Kayli and Granny found out so much more about themselves than expected. The tone was lighthearted but still carried an element of truth regarding how people connect and how dating is more fun than you might think.

I loved the story that flowed between the main character and her grandmother.

It made me miss my aunts and great aunt.

This was a fun story about the main character and her grandmother entering in the dating world and giving each other advice.

It was funny to hear about each characters experiences in the on-line dating world.

Fun... Fun... Fun...

This book was a Goodreads win.

Thanks to the author and Goodreads.

A 24-year-old city-living girl and her Florida grandmother both try online dating for the first time, offering each other advice and cheering each other on via phone calls and email. Kayli works as a fancy bottle service cocktail waitress, and experiments with meeting men through Okcupid; her grandmother uses Match.com to meet men in their 70s and 80s. This memoir is funny and slight and easy to read.

Pretty good for a freebie from Amazon unlimited. It made me giggle and laugh as these two navigated the online dating world. I enjoyed that the 24 year old and her 75 year old grandmother compared online dating experiences and supported each other through distance and odd dates. I was supposed to read a biography fir book club and somehow found this little memoir of six months in Kayli's life.

I find this book a little hard to rate but enjoyed it very much. It isn't a long book and it certainly isn't heavy reading but it did make me laugh. My dating background and personality are quite different than the authors but it was interesting to about someone's very different experiences and laugh and sigh when I could imagine or relate. Best of all though was the relationship between the author and her granny.

Quirky and funny this book was exactly what I expected from reading the dustjacket. Every now and then I had to remind myself that it was non-fiction. Granny seemed larger than life (kinda like a classy version of Grandma Mazur from Janet Evanovich's novels).

It wrapped up a little too neatly for my taste, still a light, quick, entertaining read.
