Jump Off the Hormone Swing: Fly Through the Physical, Mental, and Spiritual Symptoms of PMS and Perimenopause

Rate this book
In Jump Off the Hormone Swing, Lorraine Pintus shares openly about the inner tension a woman can feel at certain times of the month between wanting to love her neighbor on one hand, and wanting to strangle her and shoot her ugly dog on the other. While many books discuss the physical and emotional symptoms of hormones, this is the first to explore in depth the spiritual aspects. Jump! is a mentoring book, not a medical book. The focus is on attitude, not anatomy. Lorraine shares insights from her own journey as well as wisdom from 1,500 women she surveyed. Sound biblical wisdom is laced with humor because after all, when it comes to hormones, you either have to laugh or cry, and laughing is better!

Lorraine Pintus, probably known best for co-authoring Intimate Issues, has penned a new book that women should RUN (not walk) and get their hands on.

If you’re having menstrual periods, I promise you, you NEED this book! Moms and daughters can read it together because Jump Off The Hormone Swing covers issues from puberty to menopause. Linda offers practical explanations and advice for the hormonal issues that most all women deal with. While she does touch on the medical aspects of our ever-changing bodies, she explains everything very clearly and in a manner that is down to earth. This book is easy to understand, easy to relate to and hilarious at times! Lorraine writes as if she’s sitting right there with the reader, having a “girlfriend” conversation.

I appreciated Lorraine’s honesty in this book. Writing very openly from her own experiences with PMS, menopause and hormonal mood swings, I could relate to so much of what she shared in this book. Lorraine writes about the physical, mental and spiritual sides of hormonal issues and offers physical, mental and spiritual advice on how to sail through the choppy waters of raging hormones. She talks about what worked for her and what didn’t, and what she wished she had done differently during the tumultuous years of mood swings.

Lorraine is very direct in this book and hits head on the issue of using PMS and other hormonal fluctuations as an excuse to sin. She points out that we cannot allow our flesh to dominate and rule us even though we’re feeling lousy. I really like that she writes about the importance of God’s Word in our life and how we can fight the enemy’s tactics and not be ruled by our hormones. I felt very encouraged and empowered after reading Jump Off The Hormone Swing. It is SO helpful to know that you are not alone in this “war” of emotions and hormones and Lorraine validates women of all ages with this new book. Lorraine also includes a 10-week study in the back of this book, which is good for either individuals or groups.

Each chapter of the study has a video to go along with it that you can access on Lorraine’s website for free. Thank you Lorraine, for FINALLY “going there” and talking about a subject that many people try to sweep under the rug.

I don't even know where to start, or what I should say. It's kind of hard to explain a book like this. But one thing that pops into my mind is: this is probably the best self-help book I have ever read. (Though Answering the Guy Questions by Leslie Ludy would come as a close second!) I couldn't put this book down. It was interesting, fascinating, convicting, relieving, encouraging, and surrounded by faith matters. Though it talked about women issues overall, it focused on the emotional more than the physical; and the spiritual was a huge part. Suddenly, everything began to make sense. I can't recommend this book enough! If you have any struggles at all with womanly matters, do pick Jump off the Hormone Swing and read it.

I was laughing uncontrollably at one part, and struggling not to cry at another. Jump off the Hormone Swing makes you stop ignoring your struggles, and suddenly realize where they're coming from, why you're feeling such, what it could mean, what you can do to overcome it. It showed how God is a part of every detail of our lives, and He cares! He knows. And He can help. Run to Him with everything. Don't unknowingly let darkness whisper lies into your ears because you think what you're feeling is “normal”, “just the way it's gonna be”. It may be “normal” for many women, but that doesn't mean you have to let it take you were it wants.

There were some sobering stories in this book. And some comments were definitely directed toward married women. But that's okay; I still benefited from it hugely overall! :)

And of course, like with all books, there were a few things I didn't quite connect with.

If you are tired of struggling with female matters, want to know why you're struggling, need to figure out something to do for more health in this area... If you want to really look into the emotional, physical, and spiritual of this issue, then read Jump off the Hormone Swing. It's just pretty amazing. Not by a doctor or anything, but still addresses some physical, health, and medication stuff. And addresses a lot of spiritual stuff! Medicine isn't going to fix all in many cases.

For some reason, the end of this book was a little gloomy for me. But overall, a fantastic book!! To women... read this book and get a new perspective (plus a lot of other stuff)! :)

Jump Off the Hormone Swing is an honest book on hormones and PMS, laced with just the right amount of personal story, educational information, truth from God’s Word and practical tips. Lorraine has a natural way of making me comfortable and normal as a woman. Her personal struggles makes other women feel like they aren’t alone, and don’t we all need that reassurance sometimes?

I loved the health tips she shared to help with the highs and lows of our swinging hormones. As someone in my early 40s, I feel better equipped for what may be ahead of me with perimenopause. Oh my!

This book is also helpful for me as a mom of a younger teenage girl. What my girl’s body is going through is major and the suggested tips will help me guide her through this changing season of her life. I really don’t want war to break out under our roof. I want peace.

For me, my favorite part of Lorraine’s book is the spiritual component. Reading those chapters felt like an “aha” moment for me. I believe Lorraine is onto something significant. Like Lorraine, I too feel a monthly attack and struggle with feelings of worthiness during PMS. This section is huge because I feel more prepared and on guard for future months. And I have a better plan on how to deal with this battle and win, even in my weakness. There are two dramatic scenes in this book that really brought me hope and encouragement.

Thank you, Lorraine, for sharing your story and discoveries. I believe your book will comfort and strengthen many women for years to come.

"When I read the opening chapter title, "Confessions of a PMS - Crazed Saint," I thought, PMS and Saint should never be put into the same sentence-they don't belong together! But as I read the book, I was relieved to find that I wasn't alone in my battles to fight the demons that come with my monthly cycle, and that the hated time of the month could, instead, be a blessing from God. This book is an incredible encouragement to those of us who feel like failures and horrible women when it comes to PMS. Thank you for reminding me that even when my hormones are out of control, God is still in control!"
Melinda Hughes, who can now put PMS and Saint in the same sentence!

"As a follower of Jesus, mother and sufferer of EXTREME PMS, I most adamantly recommend this book for women of all ages. Lorraine's insights, testimonials and practical wisdom helped relieve myself as well as my daughter, from the unnecessary PMS drama in our lives. Her wisdom, through the book and a few emails and phone calls, helped us approach PMS with a much more rational mind-set. I am forever grateful for her counsel."
Laurie Jackson, health coach

I dare you to find anyone more passionate, dynamic, or Kingdom-minded than Lorraine Pintus. Whether writing or speaking, Lorraine ministers to women right where they are, guiding them to deep truths, but always with hope and humor. Jerusha Clark, speaker and author of Every Thought Captive, When I Get Married, and Living Beyond Postpartum Depression

Tammy Ansari, just another woman in God's army that needs continual guidance to fight the good fight

"Finally! A book on PMS that you'll actually love to read! Insightful, inspirational, and wonderfully entertaining! A brilliant blend of information, illustrations, and heartfelt stories - you'll want to read this one more than once!"
Patti Gordon, speaker and author of Press Play: Taking the Single Life Off Hold

"With an incredible passion for God and helping women, Lorraine jumps into this mysterious subject (PMS) with a vigor that will radically change the way you've always viewed your hormones. You'll come face to face with your Maker and understand, finally, how to be victorious through PMS, not just endure it."
Ralina Ankrum - wife, mom, aspiring writer, and former PMS bad girl

"The description of Eve and God's forgiveness changed my view of Eve and my attitude towards monthly periods. Your dramas and word pictures are awesome and I love your sense of humor!"
Fran Upton, Bible study leader

"This book has saved lives on the ground (i.e. my husband's) AND 30,000 feet in the air (i.e. the passengers I serve as a flight attendant)! The wisdom, prayers, scripture, and advice in this book saved my sanity when hormones were making me crazy. I'm sure Lorraine wrote this book just for me."
Kit May, Flight Attendant, wife and mom

"Imagine my surprise when, having plodded through the cyclical symptoms of PMS for decades, Lorrraine pointed out what I'd been missing all along-the spiritual symptoms of hormones. Her book encourages women with practical tips and tools to joyfully embrace this unique aspect of womanhood."
Rebecca von Boeck, nutritional enthusiast, aspiring author and hormonally challenged saint

"I thought I was the only one who suffered spiritually with PMS! To read Lorraine's experiences shared with such honesty and humor, and most importantly with a biblical perspective, was one of the greatest blessings I've ever received. This book was life-changing - for me and for my whole family. Thank you Lorraine!"

It's packed with practical information to lessen hormonal stresses, but it also takes a woman into a journey in her soul. Here you'll grasp the specialized love that God has for you in a fresh and absolutely new way."
Mitzi Paradise, Mom and Nana who is beyond PMS but not beyond the reaches of God's love and plan for women

"You'll laugh, you'll cry, not because of whacky hormones but because this book is both funny and tender. Through Lorraine's teaching I found ME! Her words touched my heart and soul with God's love and grace. Thank you, Lorraine, for this passionate, inspired guide of God's truth, God's hope, and God's help and healing for weary women everywhere. "

You might even find yourself saying, "I know you, right?!" to her picture on the back cover."

Lorraine's book serves a unique yet largely untouched need by addressing the spiritual component. She offers godly wisdom wrapped in delightful humor. This precious book, written by a precious lady, is certain to make a positive impact on many levels."
Kristine Klitzke, RN, BSN, Speaker, Author of Hormone Balance: A Matter of Life & Health

"Lorraine is a powerful voice speaking God's message of hope and redemption when it comes to dealing with tough women's issues. Now she addresses the hormone swing in a way no one else does-through the lens of God's Word. Get this book for yourself and share it with your daughter. The refreshing view of womanhood in these pages transcends generational lines."

This book is part practical guide and part spiritual direction for the female function of hormones. The first half gave simple explanations of why my cycle was changing and what peri-menopause looks like. (I wondered why my doctor couldn’t explain it that way.) There are some specific things to do to counteract your symptoms- most of those you already know like drink water, exercise, cut sugar (someday...) but her guide on what each hormone does is extremely helpful.
The second half is all the spiritual. Most of these principles were something I learned as a much younger woman so were not really helpful and some examples seemed very far out there because it’s been many years since I learned how to yield to the Lord in those areas. I did find some great resources in this section to use in counseling others.
Overall, it’s a really good book with great practical information. I’d like to give it 4.5 stars.

This book is truly outstanding. What an eye-opener. This book will help you to see that (1) PMS is a spiritual issue, (2) you can help control PMS symptoms in a variety of ways, (3) you are not crazy, just hormonal, (4) many things that you do and feel are actually PMS related, and so much more. Seriously, this book was so good and has helped me so much already. It is an easy read and the author’s talented writing keeps it interesting. I really believe all women should read this book. You won’t regret it.

I found this book an intriguing look at how our hormones affect us as women - Physically, Mentally and Spiritually (PMS -the author's acronym!). Reading about the author's and other women's experiences was really refreshing to me - I'm not the only one that finds hormone swings really challenging! I came away with the feeling that I'm not alone in times of hormonal struggle and that these times can actually be positive as I learn to rely more heavily on the Father who loves me unconditionally.

I have nothing against authors who reference religion or even suggest prayer as a helpful tip, but this had enough references to be distracting. It also really didn't give me any new information and a lot of the advice wasn't based in science but more common sense. Eat right, exercise, take a warm bath and pray, pray, pray!

"That day-when I lay on the floor in the bedroom closet, curled in the fetal position, sobbing-I didn't need medical insight about why..."

All women experience symptoms related to their monthly cycle, it's just a matter of severity. From tender and sore body parts to crying jags, it can be difficult to deal with the most common of life. Lorraine Pintus believes that "the most horrible symptoms of hormonal swings are often not the aches in our bodies, but the assaults on our souls that rip our identity and tear at the fabric of our noble calling as women." Pintus examines the physical, mental, and spiritual aspects of PMS and perimenopause. She states that the spiritual component of this female issue is under-examined.

There are many books available that talk about PMS, menopause, and other cycles of a woman's life. They are helpful and by incorporating their suggestions, you can improve your physical and sometimes mental health when your hormones make you feel terrible. What sets Pintus' book apart from the rest is the extra step she takes in talking about how our cycles effect us spiritually. She does not ignore the physical and mental aspects, in fact, she begins with them. She briefly talks about why women feel poorly, how hormones effect us, and gives tips to alleviate the symptoms. She then begins to explore how women can be effected spiritually. She gives suggestions for being and acting like a godly woman even when you feel crazy. She challenges you to look at your view of menstruation. She even provides benefits of PMS and perimenopause.

This book provides excellent insight into the many aspects of the monthly cycle. Her insight into the spiritual component makes this book different from others and thus, the one to get. There is also a helpful 10 week study to do alone or in a group. Her chapter notes provide further reading and insight into the topic. It's well written and easy to understand. The suggestions are varied to fit a variety of time limits, budgets, and needs.

Lorraine Pintus has been involved in politics and public relations, sales and the corporate world. She left that behind to raise her girls although she wrote in her spare time and had some weekend speaking engagements. As her girls grew, so did her ministry to women. She is now an author and speaker encouraging women. She has also worked with Linda Dillow.

Ok, Ladies... this one's for you! And you don't want to miss it!

Lorraine Pintus has given us a valuable resource in Jump Off the Hormone Swing. If you suffer from PMS or perimenopause... or even if you don't... you'll want to read this book. Before I read it, I didn't think I had any hormonal problems. But then I read this:

"Oh, the inner turmoil when one moment I was on my knees compassionately praying for my neighbor, and the next moment I wanted to strangle her and kick her ugly dog."

It startled me! It made me laugh out loud... And then I thought "How does she know me?" Page after page she was writing my story. I couldn't put it down. I couldn't believe what I was reading. She knows exactly how I feel and what I'm going through. So that must mean... I'm not the only one!

Before I read this book, I would have never related my feelings to hormones. I thought I was just a weak woman. I couldn't figure out why I couldn't get it all together. Now I know. Hormones.

Lorraine takes on tough questions like:
•How do I manage the swing between feeling super confident and energetic one day, and incompetent and listless the next?
•How do I handle my self-hatred after downing an extra large bag of peanut M & M's the day before my period.
•How is it that I suddenly find my husband so annoying?
•How can God possibly love me when I hate myself?

Unlike a medical book, Jump Off the Hormone Swing addresses EVERY aspect of PMS. Physical, Mental (Mood), and Spiritual. She gives a very simplified explanation of what part each hormone plays in your body... the effects of too little, or too much. Lorraine gives advice on diet and exercise, relieving stress, planning ahead for the days that you know will be the hardest for you (Who would have thought?), and most of all... she reminds us to invite God into these issues as well.

Lorraine shares from her heart and a Biblical perspective. She shares many of her personal 'aha' moments with us. She shows us how to 'do' life... how to be a Godly woman even in the middle of a hormonal storm. You will also find a 10-week Bible Study in the back of the book, along with a symptom tracker.

There is so much in this book I'd like to share that I can't recommend it highly enough.

MY REVIEW:

Encouraging. Inspiring. Convicting. Comforting. Exciting. Practical. Just a few words I would use to describe this book.

As a woman, have you ever thought about how your hormones and monthly cycle are a reminder of God's redeeming love?

Yeah. I thought not.

Neither had I...until I read this amazing book by Lorraine Pintus. Until now I have hated hormones and their affects on my body. But now I have a new appreciation and perspective on God's amazing creation in the female body. Not only has my thinking been changed about such matters, but I am now armed with a whole lot of understanding and practical ideas to embrace my hormones rather than antagonize them.

This book is extremely practical and very comprehensive as it not only addresses the physical and emotional components, but the spiritual ones as well. Lorraine, with both love and humor, shows us how the physical, mental, and spiritual aspects are all tied together and how we should treat them individually and as a whole. Reading this book will open your eyes to God's grace - even to a woman who can go from feeling wonderful to crummy in 5 seconds flat.

This book is a perfect handbook for woman of any age - from teen to post-menopause. It will enable you to understand your own body and be more compassionate to the women around you. I also highly recommend it as reading for husbands who truly want to be a student of their wife or for a Mother/Daughter study together. Anyway you read this you will be blessed.

This witty book does a good job of simplifying the hormonal imbalances women typically experience with their cycles and perimenopause. It also has some basic good advice for how to alleviate your symptoms. However, the constant religious references are distracting and not helpful. For instance, several chapters have formulaic prayers that she wants us to say, and she regularly records her prayers for her readers as well as assuring us repeatedly that she has done a great deal of praying over her book. I can overlook that. What I cannot overlook is the assertion that all PMS-motivated bad behavior is sin, and that if we try to excuse it, we are only being dishonest. I take issue with that, especially since she has heavily addressed PMDD in previous chapters. PMDD is PMS raised to the level of mental illness. I don't think it is helpful to tell women suffering from hormone-related mental illness that all their bad behavior is sin, and that they just need to stop it and repent. Nor was it helpful when she backed up her assertion with "Men don't like it when we blame rude actions on PMS." Call me a feminist, but I just couldn't read past that.

Jump Off the Hormone Swing: Fly Through the Physical, Mental, and Spiritual Symptoms of PMS and Perimenopause, Lorraine Pintus, Moody Publishers, 2011.

Sure, that’s personal, but since more than 85 per cent of 50 per cent of the population can identify with me… well, that’s not very personal, is it? I love this book. It is not extremely rigorous and has a very strong religious bent, but both of those things are okay with me. I don’t think this is the last book I will read about hormones. It might be the cheesiest book I read this year, but… (Humor wise, it was on par with Looney Spoons, although I did snicker here and there.) Bottom line is: if you are a Christian woman of any age, this is a must-read and it would make a great ten week small group. And I always appreciate it when a self help book tells you at some point to get professional help if…, like they’re not threatened by the professionals and they care about you.

Pintus has written a book that covers the physical, mental and spiritual aspects of PMS and perimenopause. The inclusion of the spiritual aspects of the the conditions sets this book apart from most other books on the subject. Numerous examples gleaned from 1500 women that Pintus surveyed spice up the book. While Pintus is not a physician, she is a talented writer and many women will find the book very helpful. One caveat: the emphasis is heavily on PMS and very light on perimenopause, much to this reader's disappointment. Otherwise, the book contains much information that readers will find helpful.

I finished all but the last 2 chapters. The book wasn't awful but I wouldn't exactly call it ground breaking either and it's very difficult to get through. She has good ideas but the content is a little repetitive.

Maybe I am lucky but some of the surprise and outlooks by women about their periods seemed a bit extreme to me. I'm not saying that I love having my period but I think anyone with common sense can agree there's purpose to it.

Even as a 28 year old the part I found most interesting was about menopause- maybe because I haven't experienced it and don't know much about it.

Found this book to be very insightful especially on the more emotionally and spiritual aspect of how a woman deals with hormones. Not many books about hormone imbalance, PMS, and Menopause talk about the emotional and spiritual side. Lorraine Pintus talks about it with real-woman situations that everyone could relate to, in a humorous and understanding way.
