Eight-year-old Hmong American twins Astrid and Apollo are looking forward to the traveling museum, where replicas of dinosaurs, mummies, and prehistoric creatures will be on display. But Astrid is NOT looking forward to seeing the mummies—especially after she and Apollo watch a scary movie in which mummies come back to life! Apollo tries to convince Astrid to conquer her fear of “things that can’t happen.” But at the traveling museum, Astrid, Apollo, and their friend Kiran all get a scary surprise—and Astrid’s new courage is put to the test! Showcasing a warm sibling relationship of a Hmong American family, as well as themes of exploration and tradition, Astrid and Apollo will delight young readers.

This book exposed me to Hmong kids as the main character a rarity in children’s literature. The kids were very relatable and their fear is expressed in an honest way. The book took us through a 3 step process on how to conquer fear. A great tool for kids to refer back to. The book could have used more descriptions of scenes to better paint a picture. This is a great addition to any library.

Astrid and Apollo are twins whose parents were born in Laos and they now live in Minnesota. After watching a spooky movie where everything in a museum comes to life, the twins and their little sister Eliana, head to school for the Traveling Natural History Museum. Apollo gives Astrid some tips on how to deal with her fear and she gets to put those to use when the lights go out and the blast from the past attractions start walking toward them in a dark hallway. This story is short, entertaining, and teaches children how to deal with fear in a healthy way. I truly enjoyed reading it and children will too!
