About the author

Ernst Theodor Wilhelm Hoffmann, better known by his pen name E. T. A. Hoffmann (Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann), was a German Romantic author of fantasy and horror, a jurist, composer, music critic, draftsman and caricaturist. His stories form the basis of Jacques Offenbach's famous opera The Tales of Hoffmann, in which Hoffman appears (heavily fictionalized) as the hero. He is also the author of the novella The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, on which the famous ballet The Nutcracker is based. The ballet Coppélia is based on two other stories that Hoffmann wrote, while Schumann's Kreisleriana is based on Hoffmann's character Johannes Kreisler.

Hoffmann's stories were very influential during the 19th century, and he is one of the major authors of the Romantic movement.

"Ignaz Denner" erzählt die Geschichte eines Revierjägers, der aufgrund seiner Verbindung, immer wieder in Verbindung mit dem Teufel (der hier in mehreren Gestalten getarnt, auftritt) kommt.
In der kurzen Geschichte (sie umfasst je nach Ausgabe 40-60 Seiten) werden alle klassischen Motive der Schauerromantik aufgegriffen, Folter, Mord, Alchemie (um nur einige wenige zu nennen).
Es beeindruckt mich, dass das Buch nach 200 Jahren immer noch unheimlich ist. Das spricht wohl für das schriftstellerische Talent Hoffmanns.

Das gesamte Repertoire an schwarzer Romantik. Teufelsanbetung, schwarze Rituale und ganz viel Dramatik. Das muss nicht gefallen, ich jedoch bin Hoffmanns Romantik verfallen.

Als ich die Fantasie und Nachtstücke durchblättert, bin ich auf diese kurze Geschichte gestoßen und musste gleich zu lesen beginnen. Nachdem ich seit mehreren Monaten fast wöchentlich Hoffmann lese, muss ich sagen, dass mich diese eher unbekannte Geschichte - Ignaz Denner - bisher am meisten gefesselt hatte. Jäger, Räuber, bellende Doggen, der düstere Wald, der Pakt mit dem Satan, Teufelsrituale, Flammen und der Tod. Auf der anderen Seite Frömmigkeit und Hoffnung in diesem düsteren Gebilde.

Hoffmann schrieb creepy Weirdogeschichten und das finde ich ausgezeichnet. Der Gothic-Horror-Aspekt der Romantik ist weitaus unterhaltsamer als die Naturverbundenheit und Todessehnsucht^^

Eine wunderbare, dem 31. Oktober angemessene Schauergeschichte mit faustischen Händeln, Säuglingsmord, aus dem Herzblut von Kindern gebrauten Zaubertränken, Räubern, (Gift-)Morden, Alchemie und teuflisch bedingter Unsterblichkeit. My jam.

The religious ovetones in the second half were annoyingly dated, but I can easily imagine that it was a necessity to be able to publish the story - two hundred years ago(!).
In every other aspects it stood the test of time very well.

Very interesting short story about a mysterious man who has miraculous cures. The action is very precipitated.
