Secrets and Snowflakes

Rate this book
The Witzel Winter Solstice Party is the highlight of an otherwise quiet winter season in Pigsend. But when Vellora and Ida Witzel start receiving mysterious, threatening letters, the party - and their own safety - may be in jeopardy.

Across the street, Bev's got an inn full of suspects - and a freak winter storm to keep them all in one place. They all have their secrets, and it's a race against time and melting snow to figure out who's blackmailing the butchers - and which secret they're threatening to expose.

2024 bk 26. The author takes on the challenge of the cozy mysteries 'snowed in by a blizzard' trope to feature what happens when a group of disparate travelers seek sanctuary in the Weary Dragon. None of the folks are quite what they appear to be and mystery abounds, particularly when the local butchers reveal to Bev that they are being blackmailed. Can Bev track down who the evil doer is before the snow melts? An excellent cozy mystery/fantasy.

Another read-in-a-day story about Bev and the Weary Dragon Inn. I didn't like this one as much as the others and it could be because I did back to backs of the second and third books. Felt a bit repetitive to me - I just wanted a little more this time around.

A slight slump after loving the first 2 but some GREAT backstory. It felt more like a bridge book than anything more.

I've been on a magic-fantasy reading bent lately, so this 3 book set seemed to be just what I wanted. Unfortunately, while there are some good ideas here, I didn't enjoy the read. I kept waiting for something, ANYTHING, to happen. The story slogs along slowly, with minimal action. And the supposed surprise at the end wasn't surprising at all. I figured it out long before then.

Also, while I appreciate the author's attempt to include non-binary and other LGBTQ characters, it's hard to believe in a town as small as Pigsend Creek, that there are so many marriages between females and females; and males and males, that it seems odd to have a man, the bakery owner, actually dating a female. And no one, including visitors to the town, seems to find this odd or noteworthy.

Nor does anyone notice the magic that has infiltrated itself into the town so much so, that no one finds it unusual. The often-alluded to war between the supporters of the king, who lost, and the supporter of the queen, who won, is mentioned as the reason no one talks about magic. Seems the queen has soldiers who seek to wipe out any magic anywhere, that is not sanctioned by the queen herself. For instance, when the heroine, Bev, with no memories of herself before 5 years ago, when she wandered into town and the late innkeeper took her under his wing, training her to own the inn he would leave to her, discovers a "moleman" living underground, no one finds it worthy of being reported to the queen's soldiers.

The plot in this book is that snow is falling a week or so before the winter solstice, but many travelers are still planning on getting somewhere to celebrate with family, or to earn money by entertaining people at rich folks' houses. People staying at Bev's inn get stuck, when there's no way for them to leave during a snowstorm that continues for many days. The plot of this book involves a threatening note left on the doorstep of the married butchers, Ida and Vellum, that attempts to blackmail them for money, with no hint of who is doing it, or what their secret is that would be revealed if they don't pay up. Turns out that everyone staying at the inn qualifies as a suspect. Even though there is a mayor and a lawman in town, everyone expects Bev, the innkeeper, to solve the mystery. Why? No one explains. And why does she do it, even though she's already kept very busy running the inn? She's too nice? Or maybe she just can't say no.

Either way, I had to force myself to keep reading, because I don't like to not finish books I've started. Luckily I read quickly. And now that I've read the 1st 3 books, I'm done with the series.

I like the concept of this book, but I had trouble focusing on the problem and investigation because I thought it was already covered in the previous book.

The fear over the magic in her friend, and that it's what the blackmail is about, would make sense if the previous book didn't have a guy who had written down that this person had power, but that it wasn't anything worth investigating. It seemed he'd likely report his findings either way, since they were in a journal, but in the end it all seemed like not a big deal.

This book eventually solidifies that with a conversation about this magic and that it really isn't anything the queen will be up in arms about. So, I had to think this must be a misdirection, only, an odd one because these things had already been covered and seemed to be good and over with.

There is a common theme in these books, where the character is given enough clues to figure out something is not what she thinks it is, and she needs to look in another direction, but she never seems to be able to accept that. Even with others letting her know she's likely wrong and should look at other possibilities. Many, many others. But no, why believe anyone! Only for the end to be an I told you so kind of moment and everyone ends up being shocked anyway. It makes Bev look incompetent, and when I'm following a character, I'd rather see the character progress and learn and be useful.

I had gotten a box set, and have taken some time away from the series. I thought I might want to read more because I am curious as to where Bev came from. We have enough flashes to give us hints, but this bigger story will likely be given in tiny snippets through other books while the "big mystery" of the week is being figured out. I'd much rather figure out who Bev is and what's currently going on over random issues that are all misdirection until the last twenty minutes or so. That may be a bit of an exaggeration.

I don't hate the books, they aren't poorly written, but I do think the characters could be written a bit better, be more relatable and likeable. That sort of thing makes it easier to follow a series. I'm not sure if I'll come back to this series, there's a lot of books and I don't want to read something I know I won't enjoy that much. There's plenty of potential here, and I do hope the stories get better from here regardless.

Summary
A group of travelers are reluctantly trapped in Bev's inn due to heavy snowfall, and they all become suspects in a mysterious extortion attempt.

Review
By now, I’m afraid the charm of the series is wearing off for me. Three books in, I just don’t buy Bev’s role as reluctant and impromptu investigator, and much of the action just seems haphazard. Biscuit the magical ‘dog’ remains the most engaging character, though he does little in this book.

The most satisfying element of the book, though one that took up little space, is the development of Bev’s backstory. We begin to get some glimpses of who she might have been, and the end of the book gives us a pretty solid identification.

I’m afraid that the bulk of the book felt very by-the-numbers, and while there are some careful breadcrumbs strewn, I didn’t feel the climax and reveal were sufficiently set up. It’s also become a little tiring that the queen’s soldiers are the bad guys every time. That’s obviously a part of the overall series arc, but it’s not very interesting at the single volume level.

As in previous books, the interrelationships of characters also feel simplistic, and feel much more cut to fit the plot requirements than organic developments from real people. I also felt more troubled in this book by the use of modern terms and phrases (such as working in an office or a family-friendly employer) that seemed out of place for the bucolic fantasy setting. An author is entitled to do anything they choose in their own world, of course, but the concepts and language seemed to me an awkward fit.<

This is the weakest of the three in this initial trilogy. There are at least ten books in the entire series, and I feel I’ve got a pretty clear picture of how they will go. While I’m mildly interested in Bev’s overall arc, it’s not enough to convince me to continue through seven more books.

I really wanted to love Secrets and Snowflakes, especially with its winter solstice theme—I was hoping for something warm, cozy, and celebratory. But instead, this one felt like it dragged, and the plot just wasn’t all that engaging.

By book three, I’m starting to worry that the charm of this series is wearing off. I continue to find myself frustrated with Bev. Her role as an impromptu investigator still doesn’t feel convincing, and a lot of the action comes across as haphazard rather than compelling. And honestly, I’m getting really tired of how quick people are to blame Bev for things when all she’s doing is trying to help. The butchers, in particular, drive me up the wall—they push her to get involved and then get mad when she does. It’s a recurring theme throughout the series, and at this point, it’s just frustrating.

I also found this book harder to follow than the first two. The pacing felt off, and overall, it had the vibe of a bridge book rather than a fully fleshed-out installment. And then there was the moment when Bev said she wasn’t one to divulge other people’s secrets… I rolled my eyes so hard I thought they might get stuck.

That said, it’s still an easy enough read, and I do enjoy the world of The Weary Dragon Inn. I just wish this book had leaned more into the solstice and cozy vibes instead of feeling like a filler between bigger moments. Here’s hoping book four brings back some of the magic.

The mystery in this third volume of The Weary Dragon Inn cozy fantasy series was really on point and kept me guessing all the way to the end. The red herrings were really well done and definitely led me for a merry chase. I also appreciate how more and more of each character's backstory is coming out as the series progresses and I'm ever so curious to find out more about Bev, who showed up in the village with severe retrograde amnesia.

Although its thoroughly enjoyable, there are small things in the worldbuilding that just don't add up, like how little a gold coin is worth, that a silver seems to have half the value of a gold coin, or how much meat people consume despite the fact its supposed to be a small village in a pre-industrial society. Then there's the matter of people traveling on foot being stuck at the inn when a pair of snowshoes would have easily resolved the problem for most of them. They are small things, but over time they've become a niggle of irritation that won't let me go because the setting and these facts don't quite align.

On the whole, it is entertaining enough and I'm having fun. Not the greatest read, but certainly an enjoyable couple of hours of escape from the real world. This particular volume can probably also be read specifically as a Christmas special, since it has all those vibes.

There was a moment that really solidified my problem with this series - Bev is (as usual) spending all of her free time trying to get to the bottom of a mystery related to someone else in town, but without any help from anyone else.

This is the pattern, but usually the problems involve the whole town and Bev has just ended up as the primary sleuth for everything in the town. But THIS time there is an issue involving one or two people … and those people chastise Bev saying that IT IS HER RESPONSIBILITY to figure everything out.

At that moment I had to stop for a minute and just bask in the sheer audacity of not only the entire town but in particular from these supposed ‘good friends’ who constantly take advantage of Bev in a number of ways … and I realized that the ACTUAL villains in these books are the TOWNSPEOPLE.

Oh well - I bought the three book pack and this is the end of the road for me. The books have been slowly revealing Bev’s backstory … but any interest I had in that pales in comparison to how much disdain I have for the rest of the characters and the overall stories. No more of this series, and likely no more from this author.

This third novel in the series follows the same pattern as the first two: some mysterious danger presents itself to the village or its people, and Bev the tavern owner has to figure it out. This time it's mysterious blackmail threats against the couple next door. As usual Bev ultimately figures it out while solving some smaller problems along the way, and we learn a little more about the backgrounds of the characters in this cozy village.

While this isn't a criticism, and it happens a lot less here than in the first novel, it still rubs me the wrong way that Bev is expected to fix the town's problems. If she doesn't, while juggling being the sole worker in an inn full of people, the neighbors will get pretty mad at her, like it's Bev's job to do this. This time it was only the neighbors, and it only happens once, but geez, ladies, she's working full time AND solving mysteries for free. Give her a break. I'd say go bug the sheriff or the mayor, but they'd just pass the problem on to Bev anyway.

Good story and I do love the main character. I like all the village characters - it's a very cozy sounding place. For some reason, in this book, the character representation felt like a checklist....like we must have 1 lesbian couple and 1 gay couple and 1 non-binary, and .... it felt a bit forced. I get why this is done, but it just seems overdone here. The non-binary bits fluster me because I have to keep re-reading sentences to figure out who is being referred to when it says "they" because my brain goes "What? I thought only one person was doing this..." and then I go back and listen again because I think I've missed a vital point and that someone else is involved, and then I realize it is one person with a non-binary pronoun, and I'm kicking myself. I get befuddled because I'm old, and my brain just stalls on it every freaking time and it makes me nuts. I keep trying. I think I'll pause before I hit the next book in the series.

Another Pig's End mystery romp, this time at Solstice. Bev is full up due to a freak snowstorm, and has to solve the mystery of which of her guests may be blackmailing her neighbors, the butchers, Ida and Vellora!

I loved the addition of child guests in the inn, the two boys added some whimsy to a few tense moments, and it made me smile. I enjoyed that the author dove more into their world building and magic system, and gave previously barely mentioned characters some 'screen time'. I have come to quite adore Ida, even though I found her wife a bit grating. The standout character in this installment was very much the bard Collin. He was a goofy bit of fun, if a bit dim witted. I also love that we keep getting small glimpses of Bev's background, in slowly appearing memories. Who is she? What has she done? How did she end up in Pig's End?

I am still annoyed by the town officials just dumping the work on Bev to solve town issues. That's what the queen pays you for Rustin!

Loved the story, still enchanted with the whole of Pigsend...

Please mind I am an elder Millennial (Xennial), therefore I see it and point it out and annoys me.
The story has among the main characters a Lesbian married couple, lovely, then come in a men gay married couple (one is a pastor, a bit the nose! but all good there), however there enters a 3rd character, whom is mentioned already in book 1, and his pronouns are "they/them"m and this bothers me.
Sure it's a fantasy world, so anything is possible but it is based on very rural medieval sort of time... I mean, was there a need to enter a "they/them" character?! I'm sorry I don't mean they shouldn't be included, and I'm not being too intolerant, but sometimes some things are a bit on the nose, and annoying, and to find this in a fantasy book, well.... I didn't love it.

This book was not as fast paced as the last 2 in the series. but we get to learn a lot more about Bev's neighbours. We also have a limited number of people in this one as the roads are impassable and the Inn's guests are isolated in the inn if not the town. So this was like one of those Christie mysteries but without the murder. I quite like that we have not really had to contend with any major crimes like murder in these books. It really is a very cozy mystery book. I am loving the interactions between new and old characters but I would like for people not to turn on Bev for all the work she does for others. And we get some more glimpses in to Bev's past and the clues are stacking up. But not enough to form a picture yet.

I adored the 3rd story in this series! As ever the narration in the audiobook was fantastic, and I got through this story maybe faster than the others.
The Weary Dragon Inn is at capacity leading up to the Winter Solstice, and heavy snows kind of trap everyone reluctantly in Pigsend. Of course, mischief is afoot, and it's down to our favorite beverage wench to solve it, because of course she gets roped into it.
I had no clue who the culprit was going to be, and the mystery worked out in a really pleasing way.
As ever, the food and cozy vibes are on point. I REALLY want to attend the Winter Solstice party at the Weary Dragon...just saying.

The third book in this series sees Pigsend snowed in and Bev with a full inn. Of course she ends up with another mystery to solve and could the culprit be one of her guests? We learn more about a few of the characters, meet some new ones, and we learn a little snippet about Bev’s past as well. I like all the people na DT hey are well rounded, but it seems very unfair how Bev is treated when she is ‘investigating’ these mysteries - she does it basically out of the goodness of her heart, but people have a go at her when she doesn’t get instant results. Seems very unfair! But other than that, very enjoyable.

So far in this series the main character has to do all the investigating —no one else wants to do it and the townsfolk seem to share two braincells between them— and then gets shit on constantly for not doing it fast enough. Aside from that, she cooks dinner every day for whoever wants to and the townsfolk, often the same people who complain or make her do their dirty work, have the audacity to complain about it not being to their liking as well! She deserves better. However, there is a non-binary character who wears outlandish capes and they are my hero.

This one got a little bit long. Otherwise, I would have given it five stars. This is the third book in a series, and I have really enjoyed this. An innkeeper with amnesia who inherit an inn and there is always a tiny bit of magic around, but not so much that it takes away any of the challenges of life. There always seem to be books with people who has one job, but they get dragged into investigating some mystery. This is another one of those, but I enjoyed it. I listened to the first three of Chirp, by the way. It is cheaper than Audible.

A good third in this series about an innkeeper with amnesia in a world where magic was outlawed in a brutal war. While this is classed as a cozy fantasy and it has the feel of a fairy tale, to me it's more of a new genre that I've noticed lately. Unusual people in normal everyday settings, just doing normal everyday things, and trying to solve minor mysteries that crop up. There's nothing earth shattering, nothing over the top, just people living their lives. The first series that I read in this genre was The Dreamhealers by M.C.A. Hogarth.

I enjoyed this because there was no romance. I know, I know. But sometimes, I need a break as it seems every book has that. Not only romance but major spiciness- which is fine in itself but like I said, sometimes I need a break.

With that said- I enjoyed this. I liked the characters and finding out about Bev’s background (how she got her name is quite humorous)

I feel this is a truly cozy book that you can do while knitting or crafting or just want something on in the background while cooking.

Someone has been sending threatening letters to the butchers across from Bev's inn, and with a group of travelers snowed in at said inn, Bev considers that it's probably time to do a bit of sleuthing to figure out just what's going on here.

I appreciate how this series is a mystery without being a murder mystery. The stories are often silly and leave both me and Bev thinking "well, that's unexpected," but they're fun to read. This one takes place in the days leading up to the solstice, and while I think it would be fun any time of year, it's especially seasonable in December.

Book 3 of the Weary Dragon Inn series has been my fave thus far! I love a mystery when people are snowed in and there’s a limited amount of suspects! This cozy mystery had me invested, much more so than the first 2 mysteries in this series. - This series is filled with magic, queer rep, quirky characters, amateur sleuthing and an ongoing mystery underneath the other mysteries as we try to unravel our amateur sleuths past life….

Adorable cute cozy fantasy. Really enjoying this series. It’s a slice of life in a rural village after an epic fantasy war where magic has now been outlawed. In most fantasy, you never really see how the events affect everyday people who just want to live their lives. A change of power affects everyone and it’s refreshing to have a story about how that affects everyday “normal” people.

I love reading these books while I'm cooking and cleaning around the house. It feels like Bev and I are working together, and I'm right alongside her in all of her adventures. Secrets and Snowflakes felt timely, too, because I listened to it during a snowy season. If everyone would stop "chuckling" so often, this would be a five-star read.
