## A Shadowy Tale of Light and Darkness: A Review of 'The Shadow of Light' by Laurie Bowler

Laurie Bowler's 'The Shadow of Light' is a captivating blend of fantasy and suspense that will leave readers spellbound. The story follows Ruby Blacksmith, a young woman burdened with the extraordinary gift of wielding both light and dark magic. This duality, a blessing and a curse, sets her on a perilous journey as she becomes a hunted fugitive, pursued by those who fear the darkness within her.

Bowler skillfully crafts a world brimming with magic, where light and dark exist in a delicate balance. The Shadow of Light by Laurie Bowler is a thrilling and engaging novel that takes readers on a magical and suspenseful journey, filled with captivating characters, a compelling plot, and a richly detailed world.

Ruby Blacksmith, the orphaned protagonist with a unique blend of light and dark magic powers, is a refreshing and relatable heroine. Ruby's complex character development, as she grapples with the burden of her powers and the dangers that come with them, is masterfully executed by Bowler. The author skillfully crafts Ruby's backstory, making her a sympathetic character that readers will root for throughout her journey.

The world of The Shadow of Light is a richly detailed and immersive one. Bowler has created a world where magic exists alongside the ordinary, and the consequences of its misuse are severe. The magical enforcers, tasked with eliminating black magic, add an element of tension and danger that keeps readers engaged and invested in Ruby's tale.

One of the highlights of the novel is the dynamic between Ruby and the legendary enforcer, Harry Brimstone. The novel promises to keep readers engaged with its unique blend of fantasy, suspense, and adventure. The story revolves around Ruby Blacksmith, a young woman with dual powers of light and dark magic, who is forced to face the consequences of her abilities as she becomes a target for magical enforcers.

From the opening pages, the author establishes an immersive and enchanting atmosphere, drawing readers into Ruby's world with vivid descriptions and evocative language. Ruby's character is skillfully crafted, with her resilience, resourcefulness, and determination making her an ideal protagonist to follow on this thrilling journey. Laurie Bowler’s The Shadow of Light had me hooked from the first page. Ruby Blacksmith is one of those characters who immediately grabs your attention not because she’s perfect, but because she’s raw, real, and stuck in an impossible situation. Raised in an orphanage with no idea of her true origins, she suddenly finds herself carrying both light and dark magic and in a world where dark magic is outlawed, that makes her a target. Ruby isn’t your typical heroine. She doesn’t relish her powers or instantly know how to use them. She’s scared, cautious, and often unsure, but what makes her compelling is how she chooses to fight anyway.

Enter Harry Brimstone, a magical enforcer trained to hunt down dark magic users. What could’ve been a one-note villain actually turns into one of the most layered characters in the story. Instead of killing Ruby, he hesitates. He listens. He starts to question everything he’s believed and the two form a reluctant alliance that feels natural, tense, and slowly builds trust over time.

The story is fast-paced, but never rushed. Bowler gives enough space for emotional moments while keeping the tension high. Themes of identity, fear, and reclaiming one’s power are woven in beautifully. And the magic system especially how it’s used to oppress adds a deeper layer to the worldbuilding. I found myself highlighting passages and rereading scenes because they hit that hard.

This is more than a fantasy adventure it’s about what it means to be seen as “too much,” “too dangerous,” or “wrong,” and finding the strength to say, “No. This is who I am.” Highly recommend for anyone who loves emotionally charged, morally complex fantasy with unforgettable characters.

As an orphan with extraordinary light and dark powers, Ruby finds herself caught between two worlds. Her abilities draw the attention of magical enforcers who ruthlessly pursue her, fearing the potential threat she poses to their unwavering order.

Driven by a desperate need for sanctuary, Ruby embarks on a perilous journey. Along the way, she encounters Harry Brimstone, a legendary enforcer with the uncanny ability to detect dark magic. Intrigued by Ruby's enigmatic nature, Harry defies expectations and chooses to delve into her past.

Together, Ruby and Harry form an unlikely alliance. They must navigate treacherous landscapes, outsmart cunning adversaries, and confront the darkness that threatens to consume their world. As they journey, Ruby struggles to master her powers, learning to harness both the light and the shadow within her.

Bowler's writing is both captivating and atmospheric. She creates a vivid and immersive world where magic permeates every aspect of life. The characters are well-developed and relatable, each with their own motivations and flaws.

The plot is a rollercoaster of action, suspense, and unexpected twists. The tension builds steadily, culminating in a thrilling climax that will leave readers breathless.

The Shadow of Light is the kind of fantasy book that sneaks up on you. You think you’re in for a fast-paced supernatural chase and you are but it’s also much deeper than that. Laurie Bowler has written a story about survival and self-worth, about living in a world that fears the very thing that makes you powerful.

Ruby Blacksmith is a standout character. She’s not some all-powerful savior or fearless warrior. She’s a girl who’s been dealt a difficult hand, suddenly thrust into danger because of powers she doesn’t fully understand. What I loved most is how Bowler gives her space to be afraid, to doubt herself and then shows her choosing to push through anyway. Her dark magic isn’t something to be ashamed of; it’s something she learns to control and respect, and that journey is both thrilling and emotional.

The relationship between Ruby and Harry Brimstone adds another layer of tension. He could’ve killed her. He should’ve. But something about her story doesn’t sit right with him. Watching them circle each other both wary, both holding secrets was such a satisfying slow build. Their partnership grows from survival to genuine trust, and I was completely invested.

The world itself is brutal, full of danger and deeply ingrained fear around magic. But Bowler manages to keep hope alive in it, through her characters’ resilience and stubborn determination. There’s action, yes, but also quiet moments of reflection that hit surprisingly hard.

If you like fantasy that doesn’t shy away from hard emotions, with characters who feel achingly human, The Shadow of Light is absolutely worth your time.

What really makes The Shadow of Light stand out is how deeply personal it feels, even while being full of magic and suspense. Ruby Blacksmith isn’t just running from enemies she’s running toward answers, toward freedom, and toward understanding her own identity. Having both light and dark powers in a world that sees black magic as evil puts a target on her back, and Bowler does an excellent job portraying that fear, the constant sense of being hunted.

But this story isn’t just about fear. It’s about defiance. Ruby isn’t some perfect chosen one she’s rough around the edges, scared, and doesn’t always make the right choices. And that’s exactly why she’s so relatable. She learns, adapts, and slowly steps into her strength. Watching that transformation was one of the most satisfying parts of the book for me.

Harry Brimstone, too, is far more than your typical enforcer. His internal conflict is palpable, and when he starts questioning the rules he’s followed for so long, it adds real emotional weight. The relationship between him and Ruby isn’t rushed it’s built on shared pain, mutual respect, and a need to survive together. Their connection feels earned and believable.

The pacing is just right never slow, but with enough breathing room for emotional development. The writing itself has a cinematic quality, with vivid imagery and powerful inner monologue that makes you feel like you’re right there with Ruby. And the way Bowler explores power how it’s perceived, how it’s feared, and how it can be reclaimed is quietly brilliant.

I closed this book feeling moved, empowered, and totally ready for more of this world. It’s one of those reads that stays with you.

Get ready for an exciting adventure in Ruby's captivating world! The book kicks off with vivid descriptions and powerful language, immersing you in Ruby's world. Ruby's character is portrayed with strength, resourcefulness, and determination, making her an impressive lead. Things take an intriguing turn with the introduction of Harry Brimstone, a formidable enforcer with a unique ability to sniff out dark magic, who surprisingly becomes Ruby's ally. As Ruby and Harry journey through treacherous terrain, tension and suspense skyrocket as they confront adversaries at every step. With Ruby's extraordinary powers and the relentless pursuit of magical enforcers, the stakes keep rising, pulling readers into the characters' fates. The author's world-building skills shine as they establish mesmerizing magical hierarchies and societal structures. Packed with a gripping storyline and well-crafted characters, The Shadow of Light delves into themes of persecution, friendship, and the eternal battle between light and darkness, delivering thrilling action intertwined with moments of profound reflection.

The Shadow of Light totally swept me away. I expected a typical fantasy with good versus-evil vibes, but Laurie Bowler gave me something much deeper. Ruby Blacksmith is such a compelling character thrust into danger because of powers she never asked for, and constantly walking a line between survival and morality. What I loved most is how human she felt. She’s tough, yes, but not invincible. Her vulnerability makes her strength even more inspiring.

The dynamic with Harry Brimstone adds such an interesting layer. I thought he’d be the antagonist, but their reluctant alliance ended up being one of my favorite parts. The tension between them, and the way they gradually build trust, kept me hooked. Plus, the world itself with its fear of dark magic and rigid magical enforcement felt eerily reflective of real-life systems of control.

Bowler’s writing is vivid, her pacing tight, and her world-building absolutely gripping. Highly recommend if you’re into fantasy with heart, tension, and a heroine who truly earns her power.

The Shadow of Light has it all that I love reading in fantasy magic books. Laurie Bowler has already become one of my favourite authors and I love her writing style where you always feel as if your right there alongside the characters as a silent observer. Her writing is always very descriptive and deep with a lot of surprise twists in every story and The Shadow of Light is no different. I hope there's going to be a sequel to this so we can see what happens to the rest of the characters. A definite must read.

battle between light and darkness! I really enjoyed reading this book. The author keeps the tension throughout the story, she reports the events masterfully. It is about the battle between the darkness and the light of a soul. The thoughts of the various characters on how to destroy the dark sides focus only on the pursuit and destruction of the bearer and do not waste a thought on the good qualities that are simultaneously destroyed in the process. This book is a suitable read for anyone who not only loves fantasy, but also wants to have a touch of everyday life in it.

A great read and a wonderful escape, just as fantasy fiction should be. I love the familiar trope of a young girl bestowed with powers that are both dark and light - powers she can use to manipulate her world and powers that also scare her. She's a wonderful character and I loved following her adventurous exploits and conflicts to watch her grow and transform through this storyline.
