Good for help with basic understanding and some definitions. Definitely didn’t agree with all of his “interpretations.” It’s good for a seminary-student-level of inquiry. I would recommend Skinner or Welch for deeper scholarship.
Great series. Have read all of the series and have gifted the entire series. Well written and explains so much. Love having the scriptures within the context he provides.
I bought this book hoping to get more historical context with deeper explanations to help me fully understand how the Doctrine and Covenants adds to ancient scripture. I was pretty disappointed. There were some further thoughts, along with quotations from prophets of the past, that I found pretty great. However, I didn’t really feel like this book dove deep enough. I peeked at the one for the Old Testament for this year, and decided it would have been a waste of my time. I found a better book that dives more into the culture of the time as well as providing insight into the symbolism in Isaiah and Revelations specifically. This would be a good book for a new member of the church rather someone who is ready to dig deeper after 30+ years of reading the same books over and over again.
