Why Animals Are Smarter Than Us: We've Got the Proof

Rate this book
Pets are prized for their companionship and charm, but less remarked on is their often extraordinary intelligence. This heartwarming, humorous anthology spotlights this quality and how it manifests itself in many different creatures. These anecdotal stories offer convincing evidence that animals can read minds, sense the paranormal, foretell the future, navigate without maps, solve their own medical problems, and communicate in mysterious ways — things far beyond human ken. Animals Are Smarter Than Us, which features unusual animal facts, includes stories of how two cats prevented their owner from committing suicide, how a dog predicted her owner's pregnancy five times, how an unruly horse made a choice and helped a paraplegic, how a cat used a cabbage tree to signal rain, and how chimps indulged in some nasty but effective medicine. Based on readers’ contributions, these stories have immediacy and power, making for an entertaining read.

When I picked it up I thought it would be a thorough explanation of why the author thinks 'Animals are Smarter than Us'. It turned out to be a book of experiences by people about their pets. This book seemed rather childish with rather common experiences that owners had with their pets, there was nothing that betokened any sort of experiment. The book also seemed somewhat far-fetched. There were just stories, with no indication that the species (ex. a dog) itself has shown these sort of characteristics as a whole, only certain pets, at least in this particular book, were the ones to display such motions. It would have been more convincing, if there was more data shown if the species is actually smarter than humans, or if it is just a pet who has been trained. But a note to be made, is that if animals were smarter than us as humans, humans would not be proven to be at the top of the food chain, or at least animals would not be pets of humans. And animals actually have less complex brains than humans(in certain areas).

Although, if you are a pet lover, this would be an ideal book for you. You may have come across some similar experiences, so for you, enjoy!
But if you are someone who prefers more fact-based books, I would not recommend this, unless you like short stories!

This was a quick, sweet read. Some of the stories were pretty amazing, and I enjoyed the stories more than the introductory sections. My dog's can definitely pick up when I've decided to take them for a walk, even before I've got my shoes on, and if I haven't said a thing. I'm not sure if they're psychic or just good with body language.
