Wow. I was honestly speechless after reading this book. In fact, I couldn't get it out of my head even a whole day after I finished it - that's how much of an impact it had on me! Rogue Alliance was absolutely captivating; I couldn't stop reading even if I wanted to. And I didn't. This book was filled with action, suspense, and mystery, as well as heart-warming romance!

Let me begin with the plot. It was unlike anything I've read before. Michelle Bellon introduced a whole new theory of the concept of vampires, and I loved it. I was pleasantly surprised when I found out this book had elements of paranormal in it! The plot was fast-paced, and I was on the edge of my seat for a good portion of it. I really liked reading about cop life in the USA, and Shyla just made that experience even more awesome.

Shyla is a cop with a troubled past. When she is assigned to her hometown, a place she never thought she'd go back to, she begins to doubt herself for the first time. Shyla is a totally kick-ass protagonist, and I liked her spontaneity. She jumps head-first into any situation, regardless of the risks, because she does whatever she can to get the job done. She'll do anything to put the bad guys behind bars, and I mean anything. Her actions even shocked me at times! She's brave and witty, but not without flaws. Her traumatic childhood experiences have changed her forever, and she keeps to herself, not letting anyone in. Until Brennan, that is. She shows a vulnerable side of herself when Brennan is with her, and it made me see her in a different light. Brennan is the one person who can bring out those emotions in her.

Enter Brennan, the 'vampire' in the novel. He's been genetically altered, and has superhuman strength and reflexes. Sounds great, right? One catch. He has to rely on blood for his body to function. I found myself sympathizing with Brennan a lot in this novel. I mean, he's had it as rough as it can get. Locked up in a cell for fourteen years? I'd go crazy! But Brennan survived through it, and was rescued by none other than the villain of this book, whom I'll get to later. Brennan's unfailing loyalty is admirable, though it made me want to hit him in the head sometimes. He's also compassionate, and has a sense of right and wrong. I loved his interaction with Shyla - his initial reservation as well as his instinct to protect her. They make a strong, amazing couple, and their romance was fiery!

Victor Champlain is the epitome of cruel. He's the leader of a criminal organization dealing with illegal drugs, and he rescues Brennan from the institute in order to hire him as his personal bodyguard. Victor is ruthless - he will do anything to get what he wants, and he won't let anyone get in the way. I felt he was developing a sort of affection for Brennan as time went by, but I'm pretty sure I was wrong. Victor doesn't care for anyone other than himself, and he doesn't hesitate to betray his allies. I found myself becoming increasingly scared of him as I went deeper into the novel!

I really liked Shyla's colleagues, the ones who were working on the case with her. Jason and Shawn are young but determined, and I liked how protective Shawn was over Shyla. Hal, the Chief of Police in Shyla's hometown of Redding, was also a very likeable character. He believed in Shyla right from the beginning until the very end, and his trust in her was amazing.
One character I didn't particularly like was Carmen, a thirteen-year-old girl who surprisingly makes friends with Shyla. She seemed slightly superficial and shallow to me, and her mood changes annoyed me. However, this didn't in the least hamper my enjoyment of the novel, so kudos to Michelle Bellon for creating such an incredible piece of work!

Rogue Alliance is a perfect start to what I know is going to be an amazing series. There were a lot of twists and turns, and some of them are downright shocking! The cliffhanger at the end made me want to scream, and I desperately need the sequel now! I strongly urge anyone who likes crime/thriller novels to check this book out, because it will rock your world. With its beautifully crafted plot, highly-developed characters and intense action scenes, Rogue Alliance is definitely not to be missed!

Rogue Alliance is a unique blend of mystery, suspense, and even a little romance with some underlying paranormal elements. Author Bellon lets her imagination run wild as she pieces together different genres into what should be a traditional crime story, but is not. The novel flows well and keeps readers entertained.

Readers could have initial issues with believability if they only assess Rogue Alliance as a top level crime drama. However, we encourage readers to hold their final opinion till they have read the novel in its entirety because the author has manifested a unique trio of characters who clash yet blend together in a strange symbiotic manner. Each lead character is equally drawn and repelled within their respective duos, creating dynamic and engaging character interactions. It’s hard to find the balance between three disparate characters, but the author pulls it off surprisingly well.

The book’s protagonist, Shyla Ericson, is a headstrong L.A. cop assigned to work the biggest case of her career. She consents to work undercover, returning to the hometown she never wanted to see again. Her impoverished childhood was riddled with domestic violence and molestation which results in a series of tragic events she can never completely forget or overcome. Her mere presence in her semi-rural childhood community is the source for gossip, speculation, and judgment.

Victor Champlain is a worthy antagonist in his role as leader of a large L.A. crime organization on the brink of a major drug deal. He has relocated to the smaller, slower life of Redding, California for privacy and camouflage. Victor’s personality ranges between megalomaniac and sociopath. The people around him are no different than the possessions he own and controls.

The third main character, Brennan Miles, is a bit of a hybrid as a blend of both protagonist and antagonist. He is also the lynchpin to the author’s infused paranormal tale. Brennan is a genetically enhanced human that Victor essentially steals from a secret research facility.

How and why Brennan came to be this vampire-esque laboratory guinea pig dependent upon special blood infusions for life is not entirely clear. The author touches briefly on his family backstory. His emotional interactions with Shyla appear to be rooted in their shared rogue nature as a result of their respective abusive pasts, but Victor’s presence and ultimate prison break of Brennan is a bit baffling. They’ve managed to keep Brennan hostage for years, but Victor manages to liberate Brennan almost instantaneously upon first introduction?

What’s more believable is the loyalty Brennan feels for Victor because of his new found freedom. Eventually Brennan struggles with Victor’s moral turpitude, yet overlooks his benefactor’s depravity mostly because Brennan believes he shares the same primal urge as Victor to target and kill. Brennan will do anything for Victor except harm Shyla who helps Brennan to understand that his urges are not of his own doing, whereas Victor kills with calculated indifference.

The effective supporting cast of characters include an affable chief of police and two faithful deputies—one of whom develops an overly protective crush on Shyla—are mostly likable, but can be a bit distracting from the book’s drama as they are always a few steps behind Shyla,
literally playing catch up to her more advance and aggressive detective skills.

Then there is Carmen, a rebellious teen Shyla takes under her wing as if she doesn’t already have enough on her plate. We get why Shyla is drawn to this troubled youth, but not sure the subplot fits with the main storylines. Perhaps both her relationships with Brennan and Carmen create opportunities for Shyla to show a softer side to her otherwise obstinate tough-as-nails public persona.

The author does a great job of creating an interesting, flawed, kick ass, female heroine. Can she be annoying? Yes. Is she predictable? No. And it is this unpredictability which creates many of the plot’s twists and turns. Most important, Shyla is a compelling character to follow and we look forward to seeing future iterations of this character and unique blended genre.

This is the second book I've read from this author's pen, and I am amazed not only at the swiftness of her writing but its intensity as well. Her skill and story-telling talent are strong in every genre she puts her mind into, they ring clear with every turn of phrase.

The characters are rich with flaws and imperfections. They are possessed by vivid pasts that affects their actions even in the here and now. Take Shyla for example: at first glance, as she is waking up in her garage from alcohol-induced coma with a desiccated mouth, she is far from being an inviting character. Her tough exterior may eastbound you, until you get a glimpse of how it must have formed, to protect her invulnerability.

You may immediately understand Brennan, the poor mutant deprived of food and supplements in a 'scientific' experiment to induce a blood-craving appetite in him. His wish to recreate himself in a way that overcomes his weaknesses is evident from the start: "The one consistent concept he was able to grasp was his name. Brennan Miles. It was the name he had given himself. Simple, strong, normal; all qualities that he longed for."

When Shyla reaches out to him across the divide, he is honest enough to say, "␣I'm a genetically altered mutant. I have freakish cravings that sometimes end with murder... You should be arresting me, not hinting at making an alliance with me␣"

Vulnerability is something they share, something that helps both of them to form a bridge across their apparent differences, and allows them the choice to shape a future that is a departure from what the past has inflicted upon them, by forming an alliance that is rogue, but oh so right!

I would like to happily announce that I have found my next reading OBSESSION. Michelle Bellon's Rogue Alliance: Part One of the Shyla Ericson Series is a novel that caught me totally off guard. Not knowing what to expect in this novel, I read that Rogue Alliance was described as a sexy chick lit/crime thriller. This description definitely caught my attention as I'm a fan of romance (with sex) and chick lit. I have to admit that crime thrillers aren't always my cup of tea, but every now and then I find one that I enjoy (especially if there is some romance mixed in.) However, I have never read a piece of chick lit that was also a crime thriller, so this aspect intrigued me. One afternoon when I found myself alone in the house I decided to crack open Rogue Alliance and see what awaited me. All I can say is, "WOW!"

From the very first page Bellon grabbed my attention. Rogue Alliance starts with the character of Brennan, an amnesiac man locked up in a secret government institute. When a man he has never seen before shows up and offers him freedom in exchange for loyalty, Brennan sees no other choice. Free from his cell and the awful experimentation that he was subjected to, Brennan decides that he owes his new friend all he can give, even if he is a man dealing in illegal activity.

Shyla is a detective in the Federal Agency of Narcotic Control who has a career that is quickly moving upwards. When she is offered a promotion to go undercover to bring down one of the United States most dangerous drug lords, Shyla jumps at the opportunity. However, when she finds out that she will have to move back to the hometown she has nightmares about Shyla begins to have doubts. Having escaped her horrific childhood life after graduation, Shyla never wanted to step foot in Redding again. Unfortunately, in order to take down Victor, Shyla packs her bags and flies back to the settings of her nightmares with a bottle of tequila glued to her hip.

Rogue Alliance has an extremely fast moving plot, witty dialogue, and unexpected yet much appreciated romance. Shyla is extremely sarcastic and due to circumstances in her past is uncomfortable with any male attention that comes her way. She definitely has to change her ways in order worm her way into Victor's good graces and bed. What she doesn't expect is to feel a connection to Brennan, Victor's stoic and very secretive bodyguard. As they both try to ignore the spark that is between them, they come to realize that is just might be impossible. Shyla also finds herself struggling to remain undercover and to keep her head out out of the past in a town that knows her history.

I really enjoyed Shyla's blossoming relationship with Carmen, a young teenager with a chip on her shoulder and bad home life. After catching Carmen shoplifting and then rescuing her from a dangerous situation, Shyla finds it hard to ignore the young girl that reminds her so much of herself. Carmen views Shyla as a true friend and the one person she can count on in a gray world. Their relationship grows into something beautiful and comical at times.

I highly recommend Rogue Alliance to all fans of fiction. This was such a great novel, with many surprising twists and turns. I can't wait to see what is next for Shyla, Brennan, and Carmen in Michelle Bellon's next novel. I, for one, will be waiting until the next book in this series comes out!

A review copy was provided for an honest review. I kept waiting for the moment when Rogue Alliance would cease to hold my interest but that moment never came. It held my attention throughout the whole novel and I enjoyed every page, it was wonderfully told and well written--Michelle Bellon does a truly spectacular job engaging readers. Also the cover design of the book is beautiful which is just another reason to grab it. As soon as I read the summary I instantly wanted to read more; Shyla is a great heroine she's determined, courageous, down-to-earth, and has a clever cop mind. She sticks up for herself and does what's necessary. Brennan is reserved, cautious, dangerous, and something else entirely.

Shyla Ericson is a female police officer whose been working a huge drug case for many years. She finally gets her big break when she's given the opportunity to go undercover and obtain the intel she needs to put an illusive drug dealer behind bars. The only problem is her chief wants her to move back to her home town--a place she hasn't been in nearly 19 years because of her dark past which haunts her. Shyla knows the dangers of undertaking such a risky operation but she is so close to justice she refuses to let this chance pass her by. Brennan Miles doesn't know who he is or where he came from--only that he needs to escape the confines of the cage he's been in for as long as he can remember. Dr. Shinto made him into a well-disguised monster by altering his genetics and testing him beyond his limits--he's a prisoner without a way out..until a man offers to give him freedom for the price of his loyalty and protection. The game is on as these 3 paths intersect in this excitingly thrilling novel.

Rogue Alliance is told from two different POV's. Shyla is a cop who specializes in narcotics and Brennan is a mysterious man with an unknown past. Shyla is confident, brazen, strong-willed, and stubborn. She possesses many relateable and admirable qualities that I absolutely loved. She's ballsy--she sticks up for what she believes in and at the same time she has this vulnerability beneath the surface. But she also has her flaws; Shyla drinks way too much for her own good and has a tendency to be obstinate. Brennan is puzzling, loyal and oblivious to his inexplicable allure. Together they form an interesting bond that ties them to one another even though they're on opposing sides of a situation. I instantly fell in love with both there characters who have soo much depth and darkness shrouding them but they make the best of whatever obstacles they face. Rogue Alliance has the perfect amount of action, romance and suspense to keep all reading parties interested.

I was incredibly impressed by the story development and character profundity that's fantastically integrated. I had a real obscure knowledge of what to expect and quickly I became drawn in tearing through the pages to see how everything ended. What a great ending, expect many twists with an edge of unpredictability, a fierce heroine, a complicated hero, with realistic situations and a hint of the extraordinary. Rogue Alliance will be devoured for its sheer amusement and wit alone. Shyla is a force of nature not to be messed with. I absolutely loved everything about it and I'll be looking forward to reading the next book in this new series. Michelle Bellon's writing is excellent and should not be overlooked!

Rogue Alliance . Michelle Bellon
Review from Jeannie Zelos Book reviews.
So, I liked the sound of this, but for some odd reason I had it in my head it was paranormal. So of course on reading I was expecting vampires or something, but the closest we get is Brennan, who's escaped from a “clinic” where he's been held for years, genetically modified and undergone some horrific treatments. That’s my fault though for not reading the description properly! My bad... Nevertheless it was still an interesting and fascinating read.
I kept thinking of all the awful things poor Brennan had endured in the clinic, and what about others still in the complex? Even though his rescuer is a vicious crime-lord Brennan feels a debt of honour to him, and works to protect him. His enhanced strength and abilities are why Victor rescued him, feeling that he'd make the ideal bodyguard. For a while that works well but then Shyla gets involved. She's got her own demons from the past, and her own way of coping with them – Patron often!
When things hot up with Victor and the crime scene, Shyla gets the chance to go undercover. She jumps at it, even though it means returning to her home-town where she had the atrocious childhood and consequences that still give her horrific nightmares. She's convinced that Victor is connected to many local crimes and people, and wants the chance to prove it and help bring him down. Its a dangerous journey for her though, she has to try to get Victor interested in her and ask her out. She needs to get close to him to make everything work. While doing this and getting into danger she learns much about herself along the way, and about her method of coping. She meets Brennan while dating Victor, and sees some of his above normal abilities when they meet unexpectedly one evening. They both agree to keep quite about it for their own reasons, but she's intrigued and tries to find out more about him. They share an attraction which each try to ignore but circumstances and danger bring them closer.
Its an interesting read, full of suspense but not in an over the top way, but in a way that feels real. I liked Brennan, his naivety about life after all that time away, his way of looking at himself as a monster, and yet wanting to be a better person. Shyla – she was just out to make the world a better place, believing that right will triumph, and she learned some hard lessons about practical justice, and how it can be evaded. I felt so sad for her, she was just trying to do right, and get on with her life but she needed to look at her past instead of just running with today – because until she did there wasn't a way she could cope with tomorrow.
I was a bit puzzled by the ending – most of the plots were tied up neatly, but it was pretty loose about where she was going next, and what would happen to Brennan. There doesn't seem to be more to come, but I felt a bit as though I needed more completion for them. Its priced at £3.77 for 290 pages.
Stars: four, a read that was unexpected but good.

It isn’t often that I find a book that can cross and successfully integrate multiple genres with panache and purely written prose. Michelle Bellon has managed to provide the thrill of suspense, a dash of mystery, romance, vampires and a strong yet vulnerable female protagonist where none of the major threads are dropped or feel incomplete.

Storytelling and setting a scene for the reader are two of her strong points, the characters pack near visceral punches with their definition and points of view, and Shayla is particularly engaging with her sharp tongue that hides a myriad of past traumas and questions. Her adversary, Victor does not slide into the all too easily half-defined all bad guy, the loyalty that Brennan shows him may be difficult to comprehend, but there is one person who is trying to see beyond his ugly side.

Brennan was the only question unanswered completely to my satisfaction – how did he become chosen as this strange enhanced human/hybrid never is fully explained, but so much else is going on in the story that it felt like his backstory would come forward as his relationship with Shayla develops more.

Add in the other characters, particularly a troubled teen that Shayla takes an interest in, which led off into a subplot that was quietly there without real explanation, but providing an option to show a slightly softer side to the kick-ass take no prisoners cop that is Shayla Ericson.

It is a complex plot with plenty of players, but the major characters are well defined and the story does manage to provide a more than satisfactory conclusion to this episode while leaving just enough options for an additional volume that will shed more light on Shayla and hopefully return to Brennan’s story.

If you want a book that isn’t just one thing, but manages to incorporate many elements into a single story with a kick ass heroine who can be annoying but is NEVER predictable – this is the book for you.

I received an eBook copy from the author for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.

Rogue Alliance by Michelle Bellon

This is the first Michelle Bellon book I have read and it will NOT be the last. I was blown away with how fluid her writing style was. She doesn’t belabor the reader with distractions; I was able to read all the way through without those bumpy moments. Bellon has a wicked pen and gets right to the point. The detail is added as an afterthought during the cohesive narration and I appreciated that, it kept the story moving. Writing in this style leaves more room for strong storytelling, which I believe Bellon has mastered.
Rogue Alliance is a mix of several genres, paranormal, suspense and romance. The paranormal piece surrounds a character by the name of Brennan Miles who escapes from a lab where he has lived his life as a lab rat. He meets a drug lord named Victor Champlain who rescues him from the lab only to subject him to a new prison. Shyla Ericson is a police officer working on a murder case while fighting unsuccessfully the demons from her past that not only stifle the success of the case but they also keep her from moving forward in her life.
The readers will see the beginnings of a budding romance that at first seems to be a wreck of an idea because of past sins, and lost memories, but then upon closer inspection you will see something that might change your mind.
Can these characters stay alive long enough to tell their stories, it’s hard to say because with every turn of the page you’re wondering how this twist and turn will end.
I absolutely enjoyed this gripping fast paced read.

Rogue Alliance was the first book I've read by Michelle Bellon, but it won't be the last. I was very pleasantly surprised with her writing.

Rogue Alliance is the first book in her Shyla Ericson series. Going into reading it, I didn't know much about what the story was going to be like. The blend of suspense, romance and a bit of paranormal worked wonders on peaking my interest.

Shyla is a very relatable character, so I'm glad the series is based about her. She's had one hell of a troublesome past that has haunted her her whole life, but determination has brought her past the struggles to become the woman she is today. She fights hard for what she believes in, doesn't stand down to anybody and holds fast to her good friend tequila in times of doubt. I'm excited to see where the next book will take her.

Bellon has a nice writing style that helps the story come through with ease. It had a really great flow to where each time I picked it up, I would struggle to set the book back down. I would have finished it within the first day or two of starting it, but school and classes got in my way and distracted me for a bit.

I ended up picking the story back up around 10 in the afternoon and didn't set it down until I finished it at 3 in the morning. Fairly sure that's the latest I've stayed up in months!

I would recommend this book to anyone who loves the suspense/romance/paranormal story lines. You won't be disappointed.
I look forward to reading more books in the Shyla Ericson series soon!

First I want to thank Michell Bellon for this awesome book! From the beginning of Rouge Alliance I was hooked!!! Shyla a Federal Agent working in the Narcotics Division in LA and has made it her goal for over a year to bust Drug Lord Victor Champlain. Finally, her chance comes when her Boss sends her undercover to Redding CA. where Victor Champlain is living... the downside to all of this is Redding is Shyla's hometown which she left fifteen years ago after a horrific childhood murder. Shyla decides she doesn't care what it takes she wants Victor, she can do this. Shyla will be undercover working as the Police Chief's ADMIN. The first day on the job she meets with the Police Chief and his two deputy's they inform her that Victor will be at the skeet range this coming Saturday, immediately she sets up a lesson for herself at the same time. While there, she meets Victor and his body guard Brennan. When she looks at Brennan chills run down her spine!!!! Get reading this book now!

This book has action, romance, your happy, and sad. You won't be disappointed! I can't wait for the second book to see what Shyla is up too! Rogue Alliance was by far one of the best reads for me this year!

I love stories that seem to cross multiple genres. The variety makes the stories so much richer and enjoyable. Shyla is a very independent minded, strong, female heroine, police officer who has been assigned to the case of her life. Shyla had a very troubled childhood and hated the town she lived in. This case involves her going back - undercover - to her hometown. She is not at all pleased about that but still takes the case. The other two main characters are Victor and Brennan. Brennan has been genetically enhanced and Victor "takes" him from the secure facility where he was being held. There is so much going on in this novel at all times. There are some moments that could have used more elaboration or could have been more realistic. Bellon's characters are far from perfect - the author clearly depicts some of their imperfections and that is part of what makes the entire story become enjoyable and entertaining. I give this book 5 stars. She blends the genres well and just puts together a unique set of circumstances, characters, and events.

I LOVED THIS BOOK! I need to own this in paperback, having the e-book is not enough, I want to feel it, sniff it and see it on my bookshelf every time I walk past it.

Rogue Alliance has it all, from the smooth villain to the rugged hero with the dark secret. There is a kick-ass undercover heroine who infiltrates a highly dangerous situation and comes face to face with her past while in life threatening positions.

Shyla, is a brilliant detective. While on the verge to bring down Victor, a slippery drug lord, who has no regard for human life and shows no remorse, she finds herself in a pickle when her cover is blown by her reckless behavior and impulsive desire to solve the case.

Saved by an unlikely rescuer, from the brink of death, she is torn between what is legally right and morally ethical. Now forcibly removed from the case she takes matters into her own hands allying with Victor's rogue bodyguard Brennan.

Her past still haunts and taunts her, but her conflicted situation with both Victor and Brennan forces her to at long last face her inner demons.

Rogue Alliance is a MUST read!

With Brennan, Bellon reinvents the idea of a modern vampire — Brennan has been genetically engineered by some questionable scientists to need blood to survive. This is a really cool thing to read, because let’s be honest — the vampire in literature has mostly become a collection of tropes. With Brennan, the whole idea is reinvented and humanized, and there’s a little “X-Men” flavor to the way Brennan was made into the man he is when the novel opens.

It takes a lot of talent to do what Bellon has done — the touch of fantasy is there, but the story isn’t so far off reality that one can’t imagine it really happening somewhere in a swarthy, seedy science lab.

And there’s Shyla, the DEA Agent who leads the story and makes it all the more worth reading. She’s one of those tough-as-nails kind of women, driven and powerful in her own right. She’s pretty much one bad ass female protagonist. She’s entangled in a case that’s dragging her to familiar places in her effort to shut down a drug kingpin. (That’s a hook for a sentence, eh?)

This book is definitely one of a few that I would call too-good-to-put-down. The tale is gripping from the very first paragraph with an exciting opening to an intense, heart pounding finish. Everything in between is fun and adventurous as the characters grapple with their own personal demons while conflicting with other characters and each trying to achieve their own goals. The story never sags or gets dull and you will thoroughly enjoy the real-world, paranormal aspect created by a mad scientist.

(Caution: There is quite a bit of swearing, drinking, and sexual scenes, but I didn't find them to be crude and unnecessary)

I enjoyed this book. I always appreciate a strong female lead and I loved the tension between Shayla and Brennon. I was glad I knew going in about the paranormal aspects because then I was able to suspend my belief and enjoy the story more. Shayla has been through some tough things and I admire her courage to go back to her roots and confront everything. This books has an interesting premise and was a fast-paced read.

Tastefully sexy, crime related vampiric chick lit. Quite the combo,, and it works. Whilst quite girlie, I don't see why the majority of men wouldn't enjoy it as well. Yep, it's complex, and one definitely needs to pay close attention but it's by no means opaque or overly difficult; go for it, it's a book you definitely won't regret starting.

Michelle Bellon has kicked off what is sure to be a thrilling series with Rogue Alliance. I was fascinated by the main character, Shyla, and I can't wait to see what will happen in the next installment.

In short, Rogue Alliance is an excellent story and I look forward to reading more from this author.

This book really caught my interest. It is perfect for a Young Adult and also really good as a Paranormal Romance. It sucks you in from the first chapter and keeps you there waiting for the next move. It seems like it is real and not only a book. I love how Michelle mixed the real world with the fictional and got it perfect. It is a Must read!

Overall, this is just a great story to read. Michelle Bellon has created a good, tight storyline and a believable heroine in Shyla. The story moved quickly and without many meanderings or wasted efforts. The interplay between Brennan and Shyla was very well written and the dialogue with other characters was precise and to the point as well. There was not an overabundance of descriptive prose to slog through to get to the story. The story was right there the whole time.

Shyla has an alcohol problem that displayed powerfully as her way of dealing with her past. The use of this coping mechanism showed a great flaw in her character, which casts a great light on Michelle’s writing skills and her style. Shyla is very driven and puts on a brave face when doing what she needs to do, but that bottle and her internal demons are always waiting. The looking glass into the drinking problem was powerful, yet realistically presented.

Brennan, to me, remained more a of a mystery throughout the story, even though in his viewpoint is is well thought out and delivered beautifully. I just felt he was not featured as much as he should have been as a tragic hero pining for the woman he couldn’t have. There is a huge vat of emotions in this story and you feel them from every character. I just wanted a little bit more from him than I got.

Victor is another well painted character, down to his mercurial personae and his rapidly changing personality. He was strong, intimidating and thoroughly fun to read, but there is an underlying viciousness that was missing in the closing scenes. All other support characters were very well maintained and written, with all their own styles and personalities and you never have a thought that one is acting out of character.

I liked this book a lot and found it hard to put down. The story moves along and there is very little wasted space, so finding a put down point was difficult. The story is fun and the characteristics of Brennan’s unique situation was entirely believable and an interesting way of drawing a new light to an old literary favorite.

Excellent job Michelle, well done indeed. I look forward to the next one.

Please Note: The book cover displayed on this review's link is the correct cover for the reviewed version of the book.

Rogue Alliance is the first in a series. Its premise is intriguing. Think of it like this: a genetically engineered superhuman with a vampire-like need for blood meets a shrewd and sarcastic female narcotics detective who wants to take down a powerful crime boss. Over the course of the novel their alliances conflict leading each to go rogue - in a way. That’s not intended as a spoiler, just a explanation that there is a lot going on in the background of this one and all of it is entertaining and focused on the climax.

Michelle Bellon is a skillful storyteller who fabricates a world that feels just enough like our own to make us comfortable. Into that environment she introduces Brennan and Shyla. Whether they are star-crossed lovers, or driven together by circumstance, they need one another even though they are playing for opposite sides. The pacing is good throughout with building tension in the conflicts between characters. Bellon sells the story with a flair that neither insults the reader’s intelligence nor spoon-feeds necessary information. The reader empathizes with the characters.

Twists and turns are woven into the story line of this compelling page-turner, providing many surprises along the way. The pacing builds with each chapter directed to the conclusion, always leaving the reader ready for more. Never get comfortable thinking you know what to expect because something much bigger lurks in the background, a subplot that ties this introduction to the remainder of the series.

Assigning a specific genre to this book would be difficult. It is a mental puzzle at times with multiple literary elements spun into a captivating story line. A touch of romantic intrigue is seasoned with the pathos of the characters ruined, violent and abusive pasts that scarred their childhood innocence. Ultimately there is more left to be told; fortunately the sequel is on the way.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Throw one emotionally messed up cop woman together with a genetically enhanced man who feeds on blood, along with a drug cartel leader, and what do you get? This book. I never thought I would see a non-fantasy book that had an actual "feeding on blood" human. You can't really call him a vampire, but surviving on blood is just too abnormal to not call him something. Either way Brennan is one messed up dude looking for some sort of twisted version of redemption through loyalty.
Shyla is trying to stay as far away from her painful past as possible. A shame her bosses haven't figured that one out before they toss her into her old stomping grounds in an undercover scheme to bring down a major drug lord.
Overall, this was a great suspenseful book that made me connect emotionally with the characters of Shyla and Brennan. The author does an amazing job of keeping the story line going with just enough action to keep you reading. The romance was a little on the iffy side for me. While I could see the obvious route it was going for Shyla and Brennan, I really wanted her to end up with her partner. They would have made a much healthier, more long-term couple.

Rogue Alliance starts with Brennan and genetic testing and explains how a nice guy like him ended up working on the wrong side of the law.

Then we meet Shyla, a tough cop, who doesn't listen to her superiors, would rather work alone and has hardened her heart after a rough childhood and has a few bad vices.

She goes far undercover and dives right in, trying to take down the bad guys, causing her to meet and feel an instant spark with Brennan but tries to ignore it and focus on the case.

There were times in the book that I didn't like the decisions Shyla made and thought she was TOO tough and TOO stubborn, but she grew on me. Once she started letting her guard down and letting people in, she became a much more likable person.

This is a good book to read if you're a fan of police drama with a hint of science fiction and romance.

I always enjoy a novel with a strong female protagonist, and Shyla Ericson, a strong-willed DEA agent doesn't disappoint. Not one to let a man intimidate her, she can hold her own with the big boys. But she has a softer side too, as evidenced by a friendship she strikes up with a lonely teenage girl. Determined to bring down a drug kingpin, Shyla goes undercover to get closer to him. What she doesn't plan on is meeting Brennan Miles, a genetically altered kidnap victim who has unimaginable strength along with a need for human blood to survive. Despite her best intentions, Shyla is drawn to Brennan, but Brennan has to decide which side he's on.

Lots of action, interesting characters, and escalating tension make this a quick, suspenseful page-turner. The ending is satisfying, yet leaves enough up in the air to make the reader curious for book two in the series.

First off, bravo to Author Michelle Bellon - You've earned a true fan!

Rogue Alliance has it all - mystery, suspense, romance, and more. I literally read this book in one sitting...it was that fabulous! The characters were well thought out and the book kept me completely intrigued.

Shyla is one stubborn, feisty cop who is determined to take down drug lord Victor, and ultimately ends up meeting Brennan, a genetically altered human who is most certainly swoon-worthy.

I ordered the paperback and wow, I was impressed with that also! It's easy to read and the cover is truly amazing. Thank you Michelle Bellon for giving me the opportunity to get hooked on your series. I will eagerly be awaiting the next one.

"Rogue Alliance" is a great blend of several genres--crime, murder, suspense, romance and paranormal. It is well written and Shyla Ericson is an interesting character that you really care about. The pace and the level of suspense keep you wanting to find out what happens next. There are some good twists and turns along the way. I want detail them but there are some nice surprises. Shyla is tough cop pursuing a drug lord up and down the state of California from the urban jungle of Los Angeles to the more laid back atmosphere of Redding. Shyla has a very troubled past and grew up in Redding, where she must return to face her present and past demons. There's an interesting back story to the crime boss' sidekick Brennan.

When Shyla was a kid she killed her step father to save herself. She then left town and changed her name to start over. Now as an adult she has finally got her life together.
She is a DEA agent and is being sent undercover. The case takes her back home.
Back in her Home town a genetically altered human named Victor helps Brennan escape from The Institute. In return for the help Brennan becomes Victors bodyguard.
Shyla feels somthing for Brennan. She admires him. The thing is that she needs to get to Victor, but how?
This was a great mystery novel. It was so well written and kept you until the end.
I am not a huge fan of genetically altered stories. It's more just my personal preferences and beliefs.
That being said I did find this story to be really good!
