Skip on to the second paragraph for the actual review. Apparently I bought this book when Kmart was still an existing store, lol! Unfortunately, it was stuck a shelf and somehow was pushed behind some other books so it was never read. Too bad I didn't find it several months earlier when I ended up co-hosting the first shower I ever hosted, though I'm not sure it would have helped much and we did manage to host a successful event on our own with this... But since I came across it in my cleaning spree I figured I should read it.
So, what I've decided is that this book is dated, and that might be some of its bigger flaws. The other is I'm not sure why it talks about showers and then spends 90% of the book on wedding showers and the remainder barely touching on baby showers. Maybe wedding showers are more important during the time that the book was published. Nowadays most couples have already started setting up homes on their own but I guess it's starting to switch back again either way the suggestions are somewhat dated for today's time so I wouldn't suggest this for a more modern shower talks a little bit about the history of hosting a shower that's kind of interesting. As far as the secrets for a successful shower some of that is questionable decorating the table some of that stuff is overboard they keep talking about managing what you can handle and then they go way overboard on the decorations and food... It's really best to keep it simple should be a day of gathering family and enjoying each other not a day of making things so challenging that you can't complete anything. Overall I think if I would have read the book back when I bought it I might have found some of the items helpful but not enough to justify buying the book.
A very outdated but somewhat helpful book on planning and hosting showers. Some of the ideas sounded fun, but others were ridiculous.
The hints of sexism left me more puzzled than offended:
"Think of hiring a magician, palm-reader, or psychic to entertain those special guests. For a co-ed event, you might want to think in terms of a stand-up comedian or juggler to add pizzazz to your party."
The book focuses way more on bridal showers than baby showers. A lot of recipes are included, all in the bridal shower section. I think the most helpful part of the book was the checklist, but again, there is one only for bridal showers.
With more pictures, better organization, and more balanced coverage, this book could have been a lot better.
