She has the power to change the world; he was born to destroy it.

Drug-addicted Theda has a unique gift that might have been useful in a world that believed in something. Not in New Earth. Using her gift now that the god has come and gone is the one thing punishable by death, and Theda isn't the kind of girl to take too many chances. There are just two things that matter to her: tricking out her gift so she can eat, and blissing out on her drug of choice so she can forget the past--not exactly in that order.

It's the craving for a fix that gets her into the worst trouble when a rugged bounty hunter as damaged as she is discovers her secret. Now she is on a new quest for survival -- one where the very handsome and enigmatic man who hunts her down becomes the person she must trust.

In a gritty, post-apocalyptic world, where any notion of god has been abandoned, humankind must look within for redemption.

In a dystopian world, all morals, character and integrity have seemed to disappear. Drug addiction runs rampant and Theda uses her hidden gift to get her next fix. Living on the streets, like so many, she is a frequent target of gang rape, beatings and still, she lives on. Only one man seems to care for her but is he who he seems to be or does he, too have his own dark agenda for her?

Murder is blasé, beatings and theft are run of the mill, but Heaven help you if you say anything that could be construed as religious. Theda moved along, keeping her head down until a bounty hunter discovers her secret gift and that’s when her life really goes to Hell.

PHOENIX, THETA WAVES, 1 by Thea Atkinson is dark, gritty and raw, perhaps too raw at times. Ms. Atkinson sure knows how to create atmosphere and shred the slime off the underbelly of life. Her writing is wonderful, but for as short as this tale was, there was far too much violence, drug addiction, and savagery for me. Trust me, these scenes are very detailed which gives credence to the pen of Ms. Atkinson, but having a heroine or anti-heroine high through most of the story, especially when she was being gang raped was a little too disturbing for me when there was such an opportunity for more story.

an intriguing start and less annoying than some serials I've tried, but I'm just not in the right mindset so it takes it down to 2.5 stars. also a tw for readers, there is rape and mention of rapes in this.

Adult Dystopian Fantasy: Take a Flight on the Phoenix

Phoenix, Theta Waves: Episode 1, by Thea Atkinson, is not only a dystopian fantasy. It's also a psychological thriller.

"No one in New Earth cared about such trivial things as morals, ethics, even the old-fashioned notion of sin. It was back to the primeval concerns of eat, sleep, forage, fornicate, and if all that was taken care of, you moved it up a notch. Steal, kill, use, assault. Same things really, just on another playing level, like some kind of warped Dante's inferno high on a gob of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs."

In the gritty black-and-white of the post-apocalyptic world, drug-addicted Theda plies her craft amid the rubble-strewn streets and sidewalks. Because use of her talent is punishable by death, Theda must practice it in secret.

When Theda notices a stranger watching her for days, she thinks she's been caught using her talent. When the man saves her, she's not sure if he's her salvation or her doom.

Prolific author Thea Atkinson paints a New World dark in realism and human misery, in which humanity has lost God and found Lucifer. The first installment in the series is compelling. Take a flight on the Phoenix.

I normally don't read short novellas. This one caught my eye, though. After I read the blurb I knew I would regret not checking it out. I was right. This is a good start to a series that I am going to anxiously wait to devour. I tend to like darker books with a strong female lead that is flawed. I have that in Phoenix

We first meet Theda eight months after the end of the world and God has came and went. Everyone that is left does all they can do just get make it through the day. The only thing that is not allowed is religion of ANY kind. Theda is a drug addict with a gift that is going to be her death. I am not going to say any more, you will have to read it to find out what happens.

Ms. Atkinson writing is smooth and left me wanting more.

It's a little hard to know how to rate/review something like Phoenix. It doesn't really fit into a particular box, though I suppose it could be described as dark post-apocalyptic fiction. When I say dark, I don't mean the kind of blah young/new adult angst you might expect when picking up something described as a New Adult Romance. Rather I mean rape scenes, murder, drug taking, torture, a dash of sexual humiliation*... and so on. Not things I particularly enjoy reading about BUT realistic for the genre. I often find post-apocalyptic fiction too tame/pretty to be believable, so I guess this was a plus.

As it happens, Phoenix was the one ebook I'd downloaded to keep me chirpy for two hours on the bus today - which in hindsight may not have been the best place to read it. Someone asked to sit next to me while I was reading Theda's** experience of rape while high and it was all a bit awkward lol.

Being just one episode and hence relatively short, it's too early to tell for certain whether I liked Atkinson's writing or not but I tend towards saying that it is skilful but too gritty for my tastes.

* This included one of my bug bears - sex that isn't anatomically correct. Let me just go out on a limb here and say if a man "buries himself into the walls of (your) womb" you probably need to see a doctor... I know gynaecologists are probably few and far between in post-apocalyptic world, but seriously - that ain't your womb, love.

** I find it really interesting how similar the author's and character's names are.

FREEBIE BOOK: Boy was this a dark and gritty book, don't be fooled by the New Adult designation because it is not for the feint hearted. Its all about drugs, apocalyptic future and a world where faith has been banned. Overall I enjoyed it, Theda is really damaged goods the result of hopelessness, self destruction and just a plain victim, I must admit not being able to connect with Ezekiel (would be bounty hunter) but it was a short book so maybe this will improve with time, but that being said I will definitely be reading the next one.

Episode #1 in the new adult dystopian romance: Theta Waves apocalyptic series [reader note: WHAT A MOUTHFUL!]

I was not impressed with this story. I'm not a prude, but for a character in a story who uses her drug-addicted talent to survive and to keep getting high?--Ugh. No. Thank. You. Next. (At least it was short!)

Note: As the title indicates: this is not a dystopian for YA or kids. This is an ADULT dystopian. I'm certainly not going to consider it a PHOENIX....conjuring up ideas of a re-birth!

Holy cow! Theda was not what I was expecting. I expected to hate her because she is a drug user, but I ended up having empathy for her and understanding why she craved that next fix. EZ is at best a fren-enemy. I don't know how else to explain him. He is the hero that you want to hate, but just can't because he turns around and does something so helpful that you just end up tied in knots. I cannot wait to read the next episode in the series. Wow! Just enjoy!

This is a good start to a series. The setting felt a little like an old western movie in a post-apocalyptic world, with saloons and old wooden rooms - or maybe it is just me. I did enjoy this story very much and I am looking forward to reading the rest to see if she finds redemption and love (obviously).

Not a bad story. I like where it was going, but I am annoyed that it seems to be a serial. Those are starting to get a little annoyed because I am poor and will never know what the hell happened in this world to make religion so bad they will kill you for following or speaking of it.

Not quite my cup of tea.

I do read dystopian novels, but this one, while well written, just isn't what I like.
I happen to like other books by this author, just not this series.
