Apart from the Crowd

Rate this book
In a little Irish town like Kenmare, there's no need to worry whether people will discover your secrets. They already have.

For Mary, that means being remembered for her tragic losses, even if she'd rather get on with her life. For her cousin Ivan, as close as a brother, the gossip is all about how his wife took the kids and ran off with her new lover. For Mary's friend Penny, it's an old romance that didn't work out quite right, and a current affair with a bottle of vodka.

Then Sam Sullivan rents the cottage next door to Mary, and within hours the whole town is talking about the film-star-handsome American. When Sam hurts his back while helping his new neighbor and spends the next week confined to a mattress on her floor, gossip runs rampant. But neither Kenmare nor Mary know about the secrets Sam is so successfully hiding....

For Mary's circle of friends, Sam's arrival marks more than one change. And Mary whose unlucky history has kept her apart from the crowd much of her life has finally found a man with whom she feels she might truly connect. But so long as both are captive to memories they dare not reveal, the past is a barrier that will keep them forever alone.

In this powerful novel, Anna McPartlin perfectly captures the drama, the emotion, and the laughter of a small Irish community, for those who fit in and those who don't. Apart from the Crowd mixes wit and insight to create an engrossing tale that will keep you reading to the very last page.

5 stars - what a strong story!

A look into my bookshelf shows that I am usually not reading Chick Lit/Contemporary Romance, but sometimes I am going to flea markets or to other occasions where I can buy second hand books and I always take the opportunity to move a little outside of my comfort zone and that's how I ended up buying this book. I read the blurb and I was actually pretty sure that this would be way too cheesy for me, but hey, what a great surprise!.

I started reading and I was immediately hooked - the characters are intriguing and I couldn't stop reading about them. The plot has been strong, maybe a little slow-paced at places, but it gave a lot of room for character development and that's what made this story so strong. I hadn't even finished this story, before buying another book by this author and I am really looking forward to reading it.

A perfect read - stepping out of my comfort zone has definitely been worth it!

I don't usually pick contemporary reads - preferring books with more escapism.
I was pleasantly surprised with Apart from the Crowd however. Though it started quite slow in the beginning it wasn't long before I connected with all of the characters and was hooked on how their stories panned out. It didn't gloss over the dark parts, there was plenty of rough edges and tough issues, alcoholism, death/loss and even rape to name a few. But it uses these issues to portray the strength of everyday people and the importance of family, friendship and not being afraid to live in spite of the darkness.

DNF. I wanted to like this, but the third person omniscient POV put me in too many heads and kept me too far away to engage with any of the characters. Add to that pages and pages of info dump, and I just couldn't do it. I'm sorry.

I chose No Way To Say Goodbye from the library because I had never read anything by Anna McPartlin before. I like to read new things and different authors from time to time. This book was originally titled Apart From The Crowd. The main characters are four friends Mary Mackey, Penny, Ivan and Adam. They all have different problems. For example, Mary Mackey has endured so much loss in her twenty-nine years that people call her ‘Mary of the Sorrows’. Mary has a humdrum existence, a a rather solitary life. That is the way she hopes to avoid further grief. Her three friends, Penny, Ivan and Adam initially seem more together but they are actually just as damaged. Penny is lonely: Ivan is a coward, and Adam is deceitful. These are all signs of lives going off the tracks.

Then a mysterious American moves in next door to Mary and her friends are intrigued but she tries to avoid him. It transpires that his wounds run just as deep as theirs. His arrival in town will challenge each of the four friends to face their demons. It will also force Mary to decide if she can take a chance on living again.

This was a book without a lot of action, but still the character interactions and the small changes in their ways of life did move the story along and the story dealt with some serious issues including alcoholism, heroin addiction and grief. However, No Way To Say Goodbye did not pass judgement.

However, I found much of the book dull and confusing. For example, when, early in the book Penny goes to Mary’s house. The narrative describes Penny arriving at the house, the door being answered and Penny going in. However, then in the very next section, Mary is asleep on the couch and does not hear Penny approach. Later in the book, a chapter starts with a description of a funeral, but nowhere in the story had anyone died. I had to go back a few of pages to make sure I had not missed anything. Also, some things about the character’s personalities seem to be thrown in at random points for the convenience of the story.

No Way To Say Goodbye is set in a small village in Ireland and the author, herself, is Irish. Anna McPartlin was born in Dublin in 1972. She has survived trauma, loss and being faced with death. This has inspired Anna to write about the darker side of life but because she has been lucky enough to be surrounded by joyful people her work and life is brimming with hope and laughter. Anna’s husband Donal is a drummer who has worked with Jack Lukeman and Junkster. He is currently in an up and coming band called Torchlight. Anna’s been supporting and following her husband around the world for sixteen years and she plan to continue doing so.

I wanted to like this book because I think it did try to deal with important issues. Unfortunately, this book did not do it for me. I did not enjoy No Way To Say Goodbye. I thought the story was slow and terminably dull. I cannot recommend this book.

I picked this book up rather randomly from the library. I started reading it, and found myself hooked into it, wondering what the secrets were, trying to guess them, and I found I cared about the characters. HOWEVER, it was heart-wrenchingly sad, but not in the world's most obvious way- the true heaviness of this novel hit me after I finished it and after its somewhat happyish ending. All of the tragedy that all of the characters faced kind of walloped me, and I found myself crying and sort of depressed. Due to that, I'm not sure if I could pick up another one McPartlin's books.

It was super long. I never did get into it. I wish I didn't bother to trudge through it and had bailed on it instead. To be far, maybe it was a case of the wrong book for this moment in my life, but I can't be certain. It was a pretty arduous read.

You only get one second chance ...

Mary Mackey has endured so much loss in her twenty-nine years that people call her 'Mary of the Sorrows'. Mary has settled for a humdrum existence, a life lived apart from the crowd. That way she hopes to avoid further grief.

Her friends - Penny, Ivan and Adam - seem more together but they are just as damaged. Penny's loneliness, Ivan's cowardice and Adam's duplicity are all signs of lives going off the tracks.

My Review

Mary, Penny, Ivan & Adam are our main characters, a close knit group. Mary has had her share of hurt and them some, Penny has a problem with alcohol but no one is calling her on it, Ivan has his own problems going on and Adam is married but in love and cheating with Penny. They all have things going on in their lives when Sam, an American with his own troubled past moves into the village.

This story is set in Kenmare, Ireland. It portrays a tale of sadness, friendship, hope, love, loss, relationships and a close knit community. Mary needs to learn to trust and allow people into her life, Sam is successful in the music world but running from his dark past. The two have a mutual attraction but both refusing to acknowledge it. There is so so much going on in this story including child abuse, drink driving and child death which some readers may find hard to read. Overall it is a story of multiple friendships, small town gossip and people trying to deal with their past whilst dealing with current demons and secrets.

McPartlin has a gift of writing a tale of relationships whilst infusing some humour, serious issues and bringing characters to life that are, some endearing and others loathsome. Whilst I did enjoy this one I don't think it has a patch on some of her other writing. 3/5 for me this time, I will be reading more by this author.

Book #50 of 2009

I liked this book. It was more of a slow and lesiurly read for me, it took me a week or more to finish as opposed to the 2-3 days for other books. I feel like the plot lent itself to that. There wasn't a lot of action, but still the character interactions and the small changes in their ways of life moved the story along. The storyline delt with some serious issues (alcoholism, heroin addiction, grief, etc), but did so in a way that did not pass judgement.

All that said, I had a couple of issues with the book. Sometimes the timeline just seemed off or too fractured. I was very confused, for example, when very early in the book Penny goes to Mary's house. The narrative describes Penny arriving at the house, the door being answered and Penny going in. But then in the very next section, Mary is asleep on the couch and doesn't hear Penny approach. Later in the book, a chapter starts with a descritption of a funeral, but nowhere in the story had anyone died. I had to go back a couple of pages to make sure I didn't miss anything. Also, it seemed that halfway through the book I was still learning things about the character's personalities which seemed like they were just thrown in for the convience of the story.

This book was really a great read! She created some wonderfully human, really likeable characters despite their flaws - or sometimes inspite of them! The setting is a small irish town that just makes you want to move there, stat. Every once in awhile there are pop culture references (american), which made it even more relatable. I absolutely recommend this book!

dear goodreads, why did you eat my review??

a more pithy version: I am totally content with silly books, but this one is a weird mix of serious (death, alcoholism, rape, pedophelia) drug addiction) with the tone/presentation of bridget jones's diary. definitely did not work, at least for me.

Wow!! The books written by Anna McPartlin is just beautiful. This is stories about ordinary people, it could be the guy or girl on the street with their own problems. When you start reading the book it is just about random people but at the end they become your friends and it is difficult to say goodbye to them. I am glad that I discovered this author

„Apart from the Crowd“ is the first book I read by Anna McPartlin.
This book deals with so many heavy topics and side storylines, that it took away my enjoyment from the love story that is center to it.
Even though I really felt for the main character Mary, I can only get myself to give this book three stars.

DNF @ 6%. I'm not sure why I even picked this one up. In the first bit of the book, we already have some really Serious Subjects juxtaposed against really poor attempts at humor. (in my opinion - of course humor is subjective!) Not my style.

Very strange story. At no point was I really sure what direction it was going. It was a very true of life story where things aren’t just rainbows and butterflies.
Though I think I prefer the fairy tale of them 🌈🦋

I couldn't stop reading.
Anna is writing about life as it is. It is not perfect. People aren't perfect. People make mistakes. But everyone has a chance to change and even the biggest mistakes can be forgiven.
This book gives hope, it also gives me hope for good times after bad times.
