Betrayal leaves nasty scars. A soul departs. Love must conquer all, or be lost forever.
Shay's life has once again fallen into mystery as she discovers her father's whereabouts. On a mission to locate him and bring him home she learns more about who to trust than she thought possible. Her group of cryptids will be forced to rise again and defeat their common enemy, but they will also discover another hidden threat. As their queen, Shay's discoveries in Settle, the final installment of the Cryptid Tales series, will shake the cryptid world forever.
Brina Courtney is a young adult author obsessed with chocolate, crime shows, and fantasy movies. She's spent the last few years as an elementary teacher and a high school cheering coach. She lives in a small town in Pennsylvania with her husband and two very loud, small dogs.
I really liked the story and the characters, Shay wasn't a whiny type which was nice. My biggest complaint about this book was the editing, there were a lot of little words either missing or inserted into a sentence where they didn't belong. The other thing is it is kind of a cliff hanger, so it's not a finished story, which will bug me now and it doesn't look like anything new has come out in years.

Settle is the third book in the Cryptid Tales series. Warning, do not read this one without reading book #1, Reveal and book #2 Capture. This is not a standalone novel, and I guarantee you'll be lost without reading the first two books. Please see my review of Reveal & Capture for more regarding the background and characters.
Once again, we follow Shay and Hugh on their journey to find Shay's missing father. The reader is finally treated to answers to many questions that have accumulated through the last two books. As Shay follows leads to find her father, more and more secrets are revealed. I liked the fact that Lacey and Craig made a reappearance in this book, though, I could have done without Chad and Olivia. Both characters are rather annoying.
The plot moves at a lightning fast pace, just like the first two books which makes for a rather exciting read. Poor Shay doesn't have any downtime in this frenetic ride. The book changes points of view once in a while, so the reader is treated to Hugh's thoughts. Man is that boy addicted to Shay. The backstory surrounding the cryptids is complicated, and I still feel a bit confused about so many things.
The end is satisfying, I really enjoyed it. I like the way Brina Courtney gave the reader a great ending with Shay and Hugh, while still leaving things a bit open to continue the story. I recommend Settle to everyone high school and up that enjoys a fast paced paranormal romance.
Shay's been through a lot since book one, hasn't she? She's found out things about her parents, about herself, about her place in a world that was formerly hidden from her. She's gone toe to toe with some really nasty bad guys and somehow she's managed to hold it all together.
While I enjoyed the book overall, I did question some of Shay's decisions. For a girl who has an entire set of beings looking to her for guidance, she does some things that don't necessarily put them first. I can understand her desire to hunt for her father but it felt like she rushed into it without much of a plan. Given her age, this driving want to do it now now now makes sense but, at the same time, I hoped that she would see how important she was to the other Cryptids.
And yet... if she hadn't gone after him, who knows what sort of diabolical machinations would have sprung from his experiments. NOBODY likes diabolical machinations. Except evil geniuses and megalomaniacs. At least that's been my experience.
Overall, this was a solid ending to Shay's story that left some nicely dangling threads for the future tales. The bad guys were bad, the backstabbing was fierce, but Shay and her crew kept battling on. That's all you can ask for in your genetically enhanced lady leaders!
Again like the previous two, very easy to read, no heavy concentration or anything like that needed.
This is apparently the final book for Shay and Hugh's story completing their story in a trilogy. This final book and journey finds them on the search for Shay's dad who went into hiding when Shay was young, to keep the family safe, apparently. Little twists and turns along the way, with a big explosion at the end, leaving all the cyptids to think they are safe..... but there was a single line at the very end of the book, that leaves you in doubt. But if we're not going to be following Shay and Hugh, i wonder how its going to play out...! Leaves it open for another characters POV and possibly lead to another book, or trilogy perhaps.
A few nice moments for Shay and Hugh and obviously a few trying moments aswell!
Suitable for YA, little bad language, no adult scenes, and like i said an easy read. Nice way to end the telling of their journey
