Anna-Marie and Alessandro work hard to provide a stable life for their only child, Gemma. The child that was bestowed to them by their goddess Ameretat for reasons still unknown. Like Alessandro’s mother did to him, Anna-Marie works diligently to protect her special daughter and lead her away from following in her father’s footsteps in becoming a Protector. Weeks before Gemma’s eighteenth birthday Gemma has a magical night with a boy, Ford Chase, who just may have been “the one”. They laughed and danced and kissed under the moon light. That is before he was forcefully taken away from her by a Rogue. Gemma desperately chases after them, but to no avail. Heartbroken and angry Gemma vows right then and there, despite her parents pleading, she will join the Protector order on her eighteenth birthday and avenge Ford’s death. No one could foresee the events that would ensue thereafter and little by little the gifts that Ameretat blessed Gemma with become apparent and are far more than anyone could ever imagine.
In this book Gemma is nearly eighteen and wanting to follow in her fathers footsteps and become a protector, she agrees to wait and make her decision after graduation. One night she lies to her parents and goes to a party with her longtime crush Ford, while having the night of her life Ford is taken by a rogue and Gemma's life is changed. All her energy and focus are channelled into fighting nothing else seems to matter. The goddess Ameretat has plans for Gemma and in this book we discover exactly what she has in mind and what happens as Gemma grows into her role, afew surprises are thrown in as well. I've only given two stars because although I enjoyed this book I felt it should have been so much better, parts seemed rushed and things were brushed over, for example at the beginning when Ford was taken there was no mention of police or an investigation, now this may not seem important but when the first book seemed so very long and we were given so much information it seemed off, this is the only one I can mention without really giving anything away. Also towards the end of the book there's what felt like a big cop-out, it makes the whole book unnecessary and just felt like the author couldn't be bothered and just finished the book.
####### SPOILER######
The goddess makes Gemma using apart of herself to right the wrong that was done when the angels were sent to earth with the curse of immortality and to feed from the humans they loved so much, this is something she apparently can't do herself. In the small town in America Gemma and the brotherhood confront the rogues and they are given a choice, once this is done someone asks what of all the other vampires roaming the earth Ameretat answers "I've seen all and I know all. Those who are worthy............." why didn't she just do this in the first place it's ridiculous it's such a cop out.

It's a shame because this was the best book until this. How can we be expected to read all three books, become involved in the story and then it end like this.
I normally type a few lines just for myself on my ipad for my reviews and away I go. Here I sit at my PC, because I enjoyed the books somewhat (the story line) but the inconsistencies in the dates, timelines, lack of explanation on the ability of the characters drove me crazy. I hope I never run across other books who these proof reads or editors have gotten their hands on. (or lack of it) 4 weeks after having sex for the first time she is 7 weeks pregnant - 4 weeks until graduation / birthday ..... after a month of being good .... it is still weeks away from graduation / birthday ..... huge huge huge deal to be a female 'mixed' - daughter meets new mixes in new York 2 are females... (not such a big deal anymore??) I had to NOT think about dates, times or facts, drove me crazy
