This is the height of magic realism. The ancestral ghosts and progeny living within same compound. People traveled from distant places to form a civilization and then they lose everything to governance. There is rebellion and prostitution. There is underage paternity and there is unmarried pregnancy. There were impositions and restrictions, timid youth and jubilant senility, there was oppression and liberation, there were glimpses and entirety of lives. It is an epic in its own. It is everything.
Where no one will be able to decide for others how they die. Where love will prove true, and happiness is possible." What makes this book so remarkable? this was my first Magical realism genre reading. It has a lot of characters ( sometimes hard to catch up with the names as several characters have the same name), I read the book twice to fully understand and follow it. The storyline is deep, its narrative, intense romances, politics, supernatural events, the absurdity that goes along the storyline and the wars drags you into the story. I cannot recommend it enough and no spoiler here but the ending is incredible that it made me want to read it all again.
... Có thể lắm....
I have tried to read this book three times and given up. I just cannot get to grips with the story telling - something about the style of it confuses me. As a result I cannot get invested in the story and lose interest. Is it me?!
Did not like. Could not finish. Endless, seemingly pointless, story telling with way too many similar sounding names. Could not become invested in any of the characters. I know I will be judged for this, but I really did not like this book.
I enjoyed this book a lot. I found it thought provoking. Each chapter was taken from the perspective of a different member of the family. It's a long book but I found it quite good.
