Douglass Cecil North (November 5, 1920 – November 23, 2015) was an American economist known for his work in economic history. He was the co-recipient (with Robert William Fogel) of the 1993 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. In the words of the Nobel Committee, North and Fogel "renewed research in economic history by applying economic theory and quantitative methods in order to explain economic and institutional change."
Bastante ilustrativo. El análisis que hace de la composición del ejército, la eficiencia del servicio obligatorio y los incentivos detrás del mercado negro de abortos, es lo más destacable a mi juicio. Lectura obligada para cada estudiante de pregrado de economía
This is similar to books by David Friedman, Steven Landsburg, Steven Levitt and Tim Harford. Since this book came first, I should say those authors write in the style of this book.
There are about 20 short chapters that relate the economics take on individual social issues. It's highly readable and interesting, BUT there are no references. There's no math, or at least, not much math.
North and colleagues wrote another book in the same style.
