About the author

Abdullah Yusuf Ali, CBE, FRSL was an Indian Islamic scholar who translated the Qur'an into English. Ali was born in Bombay, British India to a wealthy merchant family.

As a child, Ali received a religious education and, eventually, could recite the entire Qur'an from memory. He studied English literature and studied at several European universities, including the University of Leeds.

This is the translation I read. It is the most easily-readable of the translations I have tried out. I have found it educational to compare stories and events with those in the Old Testament so that I can see them from the Biblical view as well as from the Muslim view. I especially appreciate Sura 13, which adds light to the story of Joseph in Egypt. I have occasionally used it in Sunday School classes to present just such comparisons. I will never be a Muslim, but I appreciate knowing what I'm talking about when I speak with those who are. For a casual reader such as myself, this is the version that I have found best.
