About the author

Else Lasker-Schüler was a Jewish German poet and playwright famous for her bohemian lifestyle in Berlin. She was one of the few women affiliated with the Expressionist movement. Lasker-Schüler fled Nazi Germany and lived out the rest of her life in Jerusalem.

Else Lasker-Schüler is probably my favourite poet. Her romantic poems are the best I ever read for sure. They express love and romantic feelings in a way I can relate to, but they don't get caught up in clichés. They feel fresh and honest. When she speaks of passion, she's never embarassing.
I also like her more melancholic poems.

Else Lasker-Schüler is one of the few poets that really, truly found new ways to express things, to say what she wants to say. Her poetry isn't pretentiously heavy with meaning and it's not just pretty. It's exciting and creative and a truly new way to play with words.

so schöne wortbilder. so schöne gedichte.
ich habe es sehr gerne gelesen. else lasker-schüler ist eine bemerkenswerte dichterin.

was mich gestört hat, waren die wiederholungen. einige gedichte waren doppelt in dem buch, oder auch in abgewandelter form.
außerdem waren in den verschiedenen gedichten oft ähnlichkeiten zu erkennen; die worte "odem" oder "lenz" wurden so oft genutzt, dass es mich irgendwann gestört hat.

trotzdem zu empfehlen!

Does it make sense to read all poems by an author one after the other? Probably not but I did it anyway. My personal favourites are "Urfrühling" and the one about Kartoffelpuffer. I could not relate to the ones about religion very much but they were still interesting!
