How Animals Sleep

Rate this book
Discover the many ways animals sleep in this fascinating and beautiful showcase of animals at rest.  How do animals sleep? Curious young minds will be fascinated to discover the amazing variety of ways the animals featured in this picture book sleep. Some sleep nearly all the time while others hardly at all; some sleep underwater while others standing on one leg; some sleep in snow while others in the baking hot desert. . . How Animals Sleep invites inquiry and comparison between the animals and their sleep behaviors plus reflection on how we as humans get rest. Gorgeous, bold block print style illustrations by Marie Štumpfová accompany the informative text from naturalist/author Jiří Dvořák. The large trim size provides an immersive reading experience. Young students of animal behavior may extend the conversation into topics of where the animals live, what they eat, and other related activities. Or they may just be tempted to demonstrate their own abilities to sleep after the final pages come to a close. Animals Pelicans, Parrotfish, Bumblebees, Sea Otters, Seals, Polar Bears, Flamingoes, Hazel Dormice, Giraffes, Cats, Green Tree Pythons, Foxes, Peacocks, Camels, Dogs, Common Swifts.

Heel erg jammer.
3 sterren voor de mooie tekeningen.

I found this book through the "Outside In World" website., in the "Latest Reviews" section. The physical copy of this picture book I checked out from the library is very wide! This makes room for the excellent illustrations. Each time the page is turned, a full two pages are occupied by an illustration featuring the animal whose sleep behaviors are being discussed in its natural habitat. The book has some interesting facts for each animal covered: 16 in all.

I think this would be a good read-aloud book to use in a kindergarten classroom. It has good information about the natural world, and teachers could prompt some self-reflection from students by asking the questions that conclude the book: How do you sleep? Do you remember your dreams? Can you pretend to sleep like the animals in this book? These questions would also be great for getting students started on book discussions; When answering the questions at the end, students could compare responses. Additionally, they could discuss which animal facts they found most interesting, or if they already knew any of this information!

This is an adorable and informative book that would be a great bedtime story. As a child, I loved to read book like this where I could gather facts and information. My favorites were the ones with the photographs of the animals. I loved these illustrations, but the book would be perfect in my eyes if there was a little photo in the corner of each page that captures the animal in real life. I think that the illustrations work really well for a bedtime story, but for a science-based book such as this one, I think that added photos could add another layer to the story. I think that this is a fantastic book for the kid in your life who is interested in animals or science, and even might prompt an interest in such things just from this book!

I may not know how to pronounce the authors’ names but they, and the artist, did an incredible job crafting this book. The art and the prose were incredible, and now I want a copy of my own!

This is a Children's Non-fiction book. I have to start off by saying I had a hard time reading this book because the arc copy's formatting was off. I tried to read this book on my kindle and from the Netgalley app, and both of those ways had pages missing. I did read what I could, and I really liked what I read. My twin boys loves non-fiction books, and they really enjoyed this book. I felt the pictures were cute, and there were some great facts in this book. I received an ARC of this book. This review is my own honest opinion about the book like all my reviews are.

I wish this book had some back matter that explained the claims in each spread better. Or even just some references. My primary question is how they know that animals dream and how they know that peacocks only have one dream.

This would be a great read-aloud, however, once anticipated questions were researched. Or, you could plan to record questions as you go along and then research them further. You would need to be prepared with how to do that research and how to explain why whatever you find is believable.

I thought this was just going to be cute but it was surprisingly informative. I loved it so much, I was actually feeling anxious thinking about what could happen while these animals were sleeping.
I would highly recommend this for all young children so they can become more interested in science. It's simply written, with charming illustrations, and I really felt a sense of wonder.
Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this

This book informs young readers how a selection of animals sleep. The illustrations are cute and the facts for each animal are interesting. The writing also encourages the reader’s curiosity to consider what the animal may dream about. This is a translated book, so does not flow as well. Still, the book is good to read as a bedtime story or a storytime exploring different animals.

Thank you NetGalley and Red Comet Press for this advanced copy. All opinions are my own.

No stories here, just fascinating facts about how animals tuck in for the night, OR day. Some sleep on water, in a tree, or even midflight. Marie Stumpfova's illustrations are lovely, all soft and dreamy, and perfect for this book.

I had a tough time reading this ARC on Kindle, as the formatting was off. But I could still see the charming illustrations of 16 creatures -- from pelicans to peacocks -- and read the brief descriptions of how they sleep. Recommended for young readers (4 to 6).

Thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the ARC.

Opinions are mine.

This book is exactly what the title says - about how animals sleep. This would be a great bedtime story for a small child. It would also be a great book to read to a classroom of older kids and then let them research how another animals sleeps and write and design their own page.

Zajímavá a poučná knížka, která je trochu netradičně zpracovaná.
Každé zvíře totiž spí zcela netradičně a originálně.
