This is a great primer of hints and advice for ANY level of player. I have been playing for 3 years now and have been doing many of her strategies intuitively but certainly learned some new tricks. A muse read for all players. Want to learn Mah Jongg? I have opportunities for you!

Though dated (the example card is from 2009), this book has good tips and strategies for a player who is familiar with the game, yet new enough to want additional help.

This book came alongside a Mah Jongg set I borrowed from the local library.

A lot of repeating of her other beginner book

A lot of repeating of her other book - a little added but not enough to be really helpful. Should be more strategy and use of probabilities in terms of occurrences rather than simple examples to be of most use. Even so not bad second book towards the end

Playing for less than 6 months & apparently, I am a genius. No revelations found here. I thought, "well duh" a lot. I mean counting how many tiles might make up one hand vs another? If I have 4 tiles for a 369 hand and 5 tiles for a 468 type hand, having more is better? Hello captain obvious. Do the hand with fewer pairs? Memorize the card? This book is for the learning to play and not the Novice. In card games a player counts cards and knows what cards have been exposed. Same in Mah-Jong? NO WAY!

Strategies? I have a strategy. When people begin to make their hands, they usually toss winds in the Charleston as in 2024, the wining hands that use Winds are limited. Therefore, even if I only have a few wind tiles, I have won games because of what I have noticed people throw out. That is a strategy. And it uses what the author suggests. Study the card! (Duh!) Therefore I disagree with the author about who this book can help. 3 stars if you are learning to play, but 1 star for the novice.

I am not a novice player having started playing ten years ago but , boy, there are days I feel like I am. This game is a challenge which is part of why it is so popular. But it never hurts to learn something new.

Some friends want to learn to play so I thought I would read this book. It focuses mostly on the Charleston and has some very good tips about how to organize your tiles on the rack, how to the read the card, how to pick a hand and some suggestions for play. I think the book is helpful.

A short book with useful strategies for choosing a hand and some tips for playing defensively. Good information in a quick read with an easy-to-find format. Even though I've played off and on for years I found some good guidelines for my own play.

Finally finished this one, along with some other Mah Jongg books. It reads well but the test of course will be in practice and games with people. I am looking forward to the holidays for the practice.
