Men's Health Power Training: Build Bigger, Stronger Muscles with through Performance-based Conditioning

Rate this book
One of the nation's elite strength and conditioning coaches presents a unique training program designed to help men achieve functional strength and muscular balance throughout their bodies

For decades, the conventional measure of an individual's strength was the amount of weight he could bench press. Now, that measure is being challenged by expert trainers like Robert dos Remedios who argue that the variety of movement patterns used in functional training is the real key to getting bigger, stronger, and more powerful. In Men's Health Power Training, this acclaimed collegiate strength and conditioning coach describes in detail the methods he has used to develop hundreds of Division I scholarship athletes, including several current NFL players.

The key features that make this book a standout in the fitness field

• exercises geared toward functional strength that can be utilized in real-world situations, from playing sports to lifting furniture
• training sessions that are short, intense, and highly effective
• compound, multijoint exercises that replace the less-effective isolation exercises found in many fitness books
• no-nonsense dietary information utilizing a new and innovative food pyramid developed by the UCLA Center for Human Nutrition that will optimize strength gains, recovery, and physical progress

After beating myself up with the grueling routine the Governator prescribes in Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding, I wanted a routine that was more focused on building functional strength over making pretty muscles. The size and strength gains I was getting with Arnold's routine were nice, but the routine took a long time and was incredibly tiring, especially 6 days a week.

I found this book on Amazon, gave it a once over, and bought it. I've cut the time it takes me to do my routine in half, and I'm getting a complete body work out instead of isolating muscles. On top of having an easy to use system that consists of a menu of exercises that are used with either a full-body or push pull routines, it's got HIIT workouts, various complexes to bring in a bit of extra cardio training into the lifting workout, diet information, as well as quick and on-the-road workouts. It's a very complete book. I'm very happy with it.

Not much information on the hows and whys of exercising. Nor were the exercises themselves particularly well depicted (either with pictures or text). On the other hand, if you are looking for exercise planning this could be good for you

Great book, written by one of the most respected people in the industry. Dos, is a coach, first -author second. He has proven and documented success through his athletes that he's trained over the years (remember JJ Airington?). Not just ideas and notions developed by a lab rat crunching numbers, or "bro science" from the meathead in the gym, smashing protein shakes. The programming is solid, and built around planes of movement, focusing on function - rather than aesthetics. I drastically changed my body composition by reading/applying these books (Mhpt And Cst) and have become more mobile and healthy because of it. His online platform has a wealth of continued info, and is recognized by some the big boys in the industry...Corsgrove, Boyle, etc. a must read for anyone wanting to get to the next level of their training/coaching. Don't let the men's health publishing lead you astray... Dos is well qualified, and I would take his books over any John Doe bodybuilding programming out there. While bodybuilding def has its place among aesthetic training. Dos will get you stronger with lifts that directly translate to performance in sport/life. If you're looking for a book to help you functionally, and while looking good too - buy this one.... You will not regret it. Much respect dos! DO WORK! - Mike

A barbell-based, no nonsense training program. Remedios focuses on major lifts. Builds the workouts on explosive, pull, push, abs movements.

His program has '2, 3, 4 day' options and also temporary, 'on the road', beginner etc. bonuses. If you select 4 day split, the exercises are also split into unilateral (one legged, armed) and bilateral versions. 12 week Macro cycle is broken down to 3 week periods. You keep the types of exercises the same but shift the volume. Always in 4 sets. Clearly focusing on power, there are 'hypertrophy', 'strength' and 'pure power' leaning macros. He advises to alternate between pure power and other 2 every 12 weeks.

As you can tell, one can easily fill an entire year with this book. Just ensure you have at least a solid hour, 3-4 times a week. This is not a short burst program.

The book offers a good variety of exercises for every type and you build your set choosing among them so it doesn't get boring. Illustrations are good. Don't let `Men's Health` branding fool you, Remedios is a serious coach with a good record of alethic training.

2 minor flaws:
1- The cover picture is more of a body builders than a power trainer. A little misleading.
2- It is strictly barbell specific so choose empty hours if you are using a gym. You'll need to invade those cages for the entire workout.

Coach Dos has a new follower. Yes, this is a Men's Health book, but dos Remedios has yet to write anything for women. You can watch him on youtube to get an idea of how fun and intense these workouts are. The best thing of all is that he's anti single-muscle isolation. Real-life function rarely includes that kind of movement. As I reflect on my past experience, I can see that my favorite and most effective workouts rarely included isolation- the Pilates reformer and The Firm workout.

Dos Remedios' program for developing strength appears to be one of the best that I have read.

His breakdown of exercises into push-pull, vertical-horizontal, and bilateral-unilateral is simple yet effective. I feel that it's so comprehensive and effective that I should be reading about it everywhere. But I don't think that's the case.

So bully to Dos Remedios.

This book is so, so! I just bought it to see a few of the multi-movement bar exercises like, snatches, clean and jerks, etc... If you have never done real workouts then you should get this book. Machines and bench press don't count as real.
