On the evening before I was to go into a minor operation in 2002, I was, in hindsight, overly nervous. However, my dear friend Sam visited me in my loft in Dallas. (I actually thought, at the time, that a thing called a penthouse loft, only concrete and brick, meant something real. So sad to be proud of such a meaningless thing.) We prayed: he gave me this book, the best gift I could have received at that moment. I came through the operation fine: Sam and other friends visited me often afterwards, and this book was a great source of peace. My spirituality is different from everyone else's, but at the same time, in a way it is the same. Samuel had been a marine, he was a graduate of Christ for the Nations Bible College. He was pursuing his bachelor's degree in business from Dallas Baptist College when he he passed from cancer. As related to me, his last words to his nurse/friend were something like, "Please help me stand on my on two feet one last time. " Then he passed. Sam taught me an important message: there are many definitions to the word "heal." This review is dedicated to Samuel Joshua Gayton, August 13th, 1982-August 12, 2007. And on August 12 of 2007, at the age of 25, Sam was indeed healed, but forever. And I've since appreciated more what really matters in this world: great people who do great things, service men and women who dedicate their lives daily so that we can live freely here in America and hopefully that freedom will extend one day to everyone in the world, and a deep sense that what I can always do, on a daily basis, is simply smile and try to be kind to everyone.

I will never give away this book. It is the classic treatise on divine healing and has helped me more than any other title to understand why healing is mine through Christ, today. Pity that the language and anecdotes are a bit dated, but the truths are timeless. Most important, Bosworth answers the question, "Is healing for all?" so plainly and convincingly that you have to be flat out unbelieving to dispute his thesis. He refutes, simply and intelligently through scripture, every argument that insists healing is not for today and that it's not for every believer. Like I said, this is one book that will always be on my bookshelf.

This is a Christian classic concerning healing through Jesus Christ. Every Christian should not only read this book, they should buy extra copies and give them out to those that are sick. This book will benefit both Christian and non-Christian because it is base 100% on Scripture and it will bring hope to the hopeless and faith to those that are weak in faith for healing!

We live in a world that tells us not to believe. We live in a time, where one with faith is ridiculed or mocked and when evidence of one's faith surfaces: logic is looked to but cannot be found.

The power of God defies all logic and teachings of this world. If we but believe, our lives would testify to this great truth; that by His stripes we are healed.

To Christ be the glory.

Classic Defense and Theology of Christian Healing Ministry by a Pioneer Faith Healer
F.F. Bosworth was one of the pioneer healing evangelists of the 1920s. His ministry filled stadiums and churches and he also participated in well-known debates with cessationists to defend Pentecostal healing gifts during a time when Pentecostalism was in its infancy. During the late 40s, early 50s healing revival, he came out of retirement to assist some of the more notable evangelists and take on the cessationists again.
While healing ministry has come in and out of favor over the years mostly due to the scandals of TV evangelists, "fake" healers, and those outside trinitarian Pentecostal orthodoxy, classics like "Christ the Healer," Bosworth's work on healing theology and apologetics response to the cessationists, continue to sell well and are read by the millions of people who choose to believe in the simple promises in scripture that God is a healer.
Christ the Healer was first published in 1924, and this edition, published by Whitaker House has been slightly updated. This was my third time reading this book. I have read a different edition.
Bosworth sticks to scripture, the ministry of Christ in the Gospels, the example of the Book of Acts Church, as well as the healing promises of both Old and New Testament verses that attest to the on-going ministry of healing among believers. This constitutes about half of this book's content. The other half is designed to refute specific arguments against healing, arguing from both a scriptural and logical perspective. Many by-name testimonies of healing are included.
This book is highly recommended for all Christians, and unbelievers who need to learn who the real Jesus of the Bible is--LORD, Savior, AND Healer.
For those who would undertake a healing ministry or who simply want to pray for a sick friend or relative, this is a great book to arm you with scripture and encourage you in boldness of faith.
If you must read one book on healing, make it this one. You will never be the same.
Highly, Highly Recommended.

Thorough Biblical investigation of healing in the Bible and particularly the life of Christ. He establishes a foundation for healing being God's will for his people, provided for in the atonement of Christ, and manifested in the life of Christ. Jesus didn't send people away with a desire to be healed. But it was according to their faith in Him that healing came.

A question often asked, “Is Divine Healing for everyone?”
God is very much more able to heal. However, He is also much more willing to perfect our healing – He is Jehovah-Rapha, the God who heals you (see Exodus 15:26).

It is God’s nature to give us all the blessings of redemption, including physical healing- for He is full of mercy and compassion.

Divine healing has been a controversial topic in the Church of today prompting questions such as:
1) Is healing still possible today?
2) How is a person suppose to receive Divine healing?
3) Can I receive Divine healing?

An almost universal theology which is so fragmentarily preached today is the kind projected by the leper in the Bible.
Among all those who sought healing from Jesus Christ during His earthly ministry, we read of only one who had this kind of theology. This was the leper, who said, “Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean” (see Matthew 8:2).

The first thing Jesus did was to correct his theology by saying, “I will; be thou clean” (vs. 3). Jesus’ “I will” cancelled his “if”, adding to the man’s faith that Christ would heal him, the faith that he would.

An important truth to note:
Divine healing goes no further than the promise of God. He does not promise that we will never die physically, but He says, “I will take sickness away from among you and I will give you a full life span” (see Exodus 23:25-26).

Reading the book would help you to explore answers proffered by the author, F.F. Bosworth to the above questions and many more questions not cited.

A better understanding of what was Paul’s “thorn in the flesh” was given in the book.
This understanding will help you to disarm every wrong notion about Paul’s “thorn in the flesh” and as it affects us.

The book is a classic on the power of Jesus Christ to heal.

Go for it!

Really a nice book to read. It’s true people are not truly embracing the atonement of Christ, that’s why there are still sickness in the churches. People say that miracles don’t happen as compared before the times of the apostles but miracles still happen today to those who has faith as big as a mustard seed.

Christ the healer is considered a classic in christian literature, and after reading it, I can understand why. The Bible is very clear on the subject of healing, and F.F Bosworth explains everything in this book so well that even a child can grasp it. I truly recommend this book to every christian.

“When your eyes are upon your symptoms and your mind is occupied with them more than with God’s Word, you have in the ground the wrong kind of seed for the harvest that you desire. You have in the ground seeds of doubt. “

“Sin and sickness have passed from me to Calvary—salvation and health have passed from Calvary to me.”

“The first step toward being healed is the same as the first step toward salvation, or any other blessing that God promises. The sick person needs to know what the Bible clearly teaches and that it is God’s will to heal until one has lived out the allotted span of life. Each individual sufferer must be convinced by the Word of God that his or her healing is the will of God. It is impossible to have real faith for healing as long as there is the slightest doubt as to it being God’s will. It is impossible to boldly claim by faith a blessing that we are not certain God offers. The power of God can be claimed only where the will of God is known.”

“We receive healing, divine life and strength and every other promised blessing in exactly the same way we received Christ and forgiveness. Since forgiveness is invisible, how do you receive it? Answer: by faith in God’s Word. Why not receive divine healing, life and strength in the same way? With every blessing that is received by faith, you must have it before you see and before it is manifested.”

“ So many are waiting for God to heal them, when He is waiting for them to take what He is offering them. How trying it would be to a friend who offered you a gift if you cried and begged for it, and then kept him waiting for you to take it!”

“Nothing can take the place of the seed, not even prayer. Prayer is not the seed; the Word is the seed.”

“If all farmers treated their seed as millions of church members today treat God’s “imperishable seed,” the world would starve to death.”

“I am determined to base my doctrines on the immutable Word of God, not on phenomena or human experience.”

“The Bible says, “faith cometh by hearing,” but these days faith leaves by hearing—hearing these foolish doctrines.”

This book was written by FF Bosworth who was as evangelist a hundred years ago. As someone who likes history, I thought it was interesting seeing his perspective on healing in Christianity and why some people don’t get God’s healing. Some of his points resonated with me even though I’m more of an agnostic theist who is still searching for what exactly I believe. One of his points is that sometimes, the traditions of religion get in the way of the healing that Jesus and God were/are trying to do in the world. I think that rings true for a lot of religions. Every religion seems to get in its own way to a certain degree when, over time, the traditions, politics, and factions get in the way of the initial message of the religion. This book should be a starting off point (and only one aspect of a whole) in terms of healing. If you’re Christian, then by all means, use this book as part of your healing arsenal. Just don’t forget to do other things to heal, such as going to the doctor, go to therapy, research whatever ails you and anything else you can think of to help yourself out until God steps in and helps out. I think there’s a saying that goes: “God helps those who help themselves.” Now go forth and be the best version of yourself that you can be!

Hang in there!

At the beginning of this book Bosworth goes over a lot of the points about believing for healing and it is God’s will to heal everyone. As I was reading the first part I kept wondering if he was ever going to address some of the obvious passages in scripture that a lot of the ‘faith healers’ seem to ignore.
He did address many of the tough arguments in the later part of his book. I was frustrated in the beginning, but now that I finished it, I can see that the book was laid out well.
He also discusses some of the arguments of the naysayers to healing and finally moves to some really awesome testimonies.
The book ends with how he passes which is a wonderful testimony in and of itself.
If you want to learn from a person that has had a powerful healing ministry, this book is definitely one I would recommend.

Trying to put myself in his context. I think Bosworth was really combating a staunch cessasionistic Christian culture in the early 1900s. I think his heart was genuine, but I personal think he swung too far on the pendulum.

The good: I loved how he really highlighted the character and heart of Christ as loving, compassionate, merciful, and willing to heal people. He argued that our physical healing is tied directly to Christ's atoning work on the cross which is why we can still be healed today. He also did stress the importance of spiritual healing (ie. salvation) over physical healing which I thought was extremely important and necessary. He also focuses heavily on God's promises.

The questionable: one of his base claims was that Christ is willing to heal all His people in this lifetime so that His people will live to the promised age of 70+ years old. He draws from Scripture that it is a promise of God to always heal His people physically.

I agree with his claim that Christ is willing to heal all His people, and yes God will always heal His people. The Bible is full of Christ's work healing people and the nations (both spiritually and physically). However, I think Bosworth overlooked and/or downplayed the "already-but-not-yet" theme throughout the entire Bible especially the New Testament. So where I agree with Bosworth that Christ wants to and will heal everyone of His children, I disagree on the precise timing claims that Bosworth makes that it should always happen in this lifetime.

The dangerous: since Bosworth makes this claim that it is always God's will to physically heal His people he then has to answer some tough questions like "then why are some of His children still sick?" Which he goes on to answer by listing 22 reasons why people don't get healed – and all those reasons are put on the believer. Now, many of those reasons are really good and pertain to sanctification and Godly living. I don't doubt that some illnesses are directly tied to ongoing sins and/or unbelief. However, this approach quickly leads to the logical conclusion of, "if it is God's will to heal me and I am not healed, that means I am doing something wrong." This turns into a works-based-healing even if that wasn't the intent of Bosworth.

Another issue I saw with his claim that God promises healing in this way is that it overlooks the idea that all of God's promises will be fulfilled in the end, but not necessarily right now (the "already-but-not-yet" concept). The promises that are fulfilled now are a foretaste of the future fulfillment of those promises. Two examples come to mind to make this point:

First, God promised Abraham that He would a blessing to the nations, he would have a son, and that God would give him all the land of Canaan. Now Abraham did see the fulfillment of the promised son when he was given Isaac. However, Abraham never actually saw the fulfillment of the land being given to him – it wasn't for hundreds of years later that his descendants inherited the land promised to him.

The second is that God also promises to deliver all those who call upon Him. A promise I firmly believe and standby. However, if we read this to mean that He will always deliver His people in this lifetime, we can quickly conclude that God does not actually fulfill His promises. Just think about all of the martyrs of the faith. They trusted in God to the point of death, yet they were not physically delivered. (However, they were still delivered from the ultimate enemy of sin and death).

There are plenty of other examples of this "already-but-not-yet" fulfillment of promises throughout the Bible. The beautiful part is when we do get glimpses into that fulfillment by tasting some of those promises in this life. I rejoice with all of the brothers and sisters who were healed because of Bosworth's faithfulness to preaching the Gospel! I rejoice in hearing of all the testimonies of believers who were miraculously delivered from harm in this lifetime. I pray to see promises fulfilled in my lifetime constantly (for myself and those around me). But even if God choses not to heal or deliver in this lifetime, I know that I can trust His character through any hardship because He has already healed and delivered from the ultimate curse of sin & death.

All this to say – there are a lot of good things in this book, but also some theological gaps in reasoning. Because of that, I don't think I would really recommend this book to anyone especially a newer believer simply because a belief system like this could lead to a misunderstanding of God's sovereign plan even in our hardships.

Of all the stuff I have ever read on the subject of Jesus Christ as our present day Healer, I do not think this book has an equal. Inspirational, challenging, deep with spiritual understanding and downright common sense application of the whole issue. From Genesis through to Revelation, Bosworth was a rather remarkable man.

His missions were well documented and well reported even by the secular press. When William Branham broke out, and after he realised he needed assistance on his travels, Bosworth was the man who was humble enough to stand in Branham's shadow and do a lot of the teaching.

I recommend this book as one of, if not THE most informative book of all time on the biblical subject. The nearest thing to it is TL Osborn's "Healing the Sick." Osborn quotes Bosworth quite a bit, as well as quoting Branham without using his name.

Buy it. Read it. And be Healed.

I began to read this book in order to gain more insight into the so-called healing ministries and their particular take on biblical interpretation. Bosworth's Christ the Healer provided just that.

Practically everything he wrote and preached about in the 1920s and '30s later became the standard belief system espoused by the Word of Faith ministries, with their heavy emphasis on healing. As such, this is a pioneer work that has an air of tent meetings and sermons delivered via radio in the early days of that medium.

The book can be read as a piece of religious writing, which it is, but also as a cultural artifact from an era that is not exactly bygone, but which has been transformed with the advent of televangelism and "prosperity Gospel" in its contemporary incarnation.

A great book of divine healing

This is a fantastic read for anyone or everyone that has any doubts of God's healing for those who believe. It has answers for all the questions a person could possibly have. It not only teaches healing from the Word of God, it also has numerous testimonies of people who experienced healings for themselves. Not just little illnesses but life and death issues. I have received a very clear understanding of God's will for everyone to be well. I highly recommend this book not only to those who need healing but also to those who want to stay well.

There were some parts of this book that I really liked. God's will, as revealed in the Scriptures, is for healing, not sickness. However, there is an alreay/not yet aspect of the kingdom of God in this age and the book doesn't really address this or leave room for sovereignty, mystery, or tension. And yet, there are some good points made at various points, so I wouldn't completely junk it. It's simply incomplete on the subject.

Some good scriptural foundation for healing. Author takes some interpretive liberties beyond scripture. Should consider he was communicating in era when many questioned whether healing was still a part of the church.

F.F. Bosworth was a healing evangelist in the 1920's. He explores divine healing in this book and compares it to salvation, both of which require faith on behalf of the receiver. He posits that receiving healing is exactly like receiving salvation, as Christ died on the cross for both, and we receive both my faith. Of note is a chapter titled "Does Jesus' atonement include healing" and he proves scripturally that it does, praise God! The Outer Man vs. The Inner Man are compared in detail. For example, "On Calvary, Jesus bare our sins (1 Pet. 2:24) and also on Calvary, Jesus bore our sicknesses (Isaiah 53:4)." One is for the inner man, the salvation of our souls, and one is for the outer man, the body.
Another noteworthy chapter explores "What was Paul's thorn in the flesh" and Bosworth proves it was not a bodily sickness or ailment but rather a messenger from satan sent to torment him. This is a crucial distinction as many have believed that accepting sickness from God is honorable and they relate this to Paul and how he prayed three times for it to be removed but God stated "My grace is sufficient for thee." This is a crucial error in the church that needs correcting. The end of the book is filled with several interesting testimonies of miraculous healings from some of those who received healing at his meetings.

As I read this book, each time I picked it up, a sense of peace would wash over me. I feel there is a special anointing on this book and every Christian should read it. He so simply and scripturally makes his case for healing being for everyone and this message brings so much joy and excitement to the body of Christ.

This is the most comprehensive and biblically accurate book Ive ever read on healing. Numerous churches of today have dismissed healing as "that was then, this is now" or God doesn't heal everybody, taking this power that God has given us as believers out of the church. The author who was a healing evangelist back in the old days. presents a good supply of scripture to counteract what today's churches are denying. Just as we receive salvation when we turn to God , we can also receive healing because "He took up our infirmities and bore all our diseases" Jesus not only redeemed us from sin when he died on the cross but also redeemed us from the curse of sickness and disease. Not all healing is miraculous or happens right away, just like when we are saved , we still have vices in our life to rid ourselves from in our old nature, healing is a process also and takes faith and meditation on God's Word continually to feed your spirit. This book really helped me to understand " too look at the unseen things of God and not the things that are seen. Because are symptoms are in the physical realm but God's promises to us and His Word originates in the spiritual realm and over time of meditating and thanking HIM for what He has already done for us, our healing will begin to manifest if we do not grow weary and lose heart.
