Our marriage cemented the alliance between our families. Emotions shouldn't come into it, but I fell in love with the ruthless underboss I married. Only to him, I'm nothing more than incubator to carry his heirs. I adore our son, but I've been putting off having another child. Raff is going to flip when he finds out about the birth control.
RAFFAELE
She is smart and beautiful, but there is no room in the life of a mafia underboss for tender emotions. At least that's what I thought when we got married. Six years has changed a lot, but my wife thinks I'm the same merciless man she wed. To everyone else, I am. But not to her. She'll forgive me for sending her to a fertility specialist. She has to, because I will never let her go.
Giulia and Raffaele's story is a steamy mafia romance with a guaranteed HEA. No cheating.
CATALINA
My sister is engaged to the don that sets my senses ablaze. I have no choice but to make plans to run. To escape my father and this incessant physical need Severus sparks in me.
SEVERU
Someone is attacking my mafia. I have to protect la famiglia at all costs, even if that means agreeing to marry a woman I have no feelings for. I just have to ignore the way my body reacts to her sister. As the prequel to Urgent Vows, this is the only book in the Syndicate Rules series that is not a standalone. Because it is a prequel, Catalina and Severu's story ends on a cliffhanger.
CW: explicit intimacy, graphic violence, foul language, fertility issues discussed, and domestic violence (past reference and on the page – not between the main characters)
I write spicy romance books that end in an HEA. Contemporary romance, historical romance, paranormal romance…I write it all. The two things my books all have in common is lots of emotion and spice. Last year, I fell in love with a new subgenre: mafia romance. Since I write what I love to read, I started a new standalone series, Syndicate Rules where you’ll meet over the top alpha heroes in the Italian and Greek mafias as well as the Irish mob. There are arranged marriages, forced marriages, enemies to lovers, stalkers, forced proximity and lots of mafia intrigue. Morally gray is my new favorite color.
I’ve been published a while and most of my 90+ books have hit the Nielson Bookscan bestseller list, a few ended up on the USA Today bestseller list and some even hit national bestseller lists in the UK and Australia. My books have been translated into numerous languages and are for sale in dozens of countries around the world. I’ve won awards and been published with most of the big houses in New York, but my greatest achievement is touching readers’ hearts. When I hear from a reader who got caught up in one of my books, I know I’m doing what I’m meant to do.
I love writing emotionally deep stories with snappy dialogue and solid plots. I’m more grateful than I’ll ever be able to express that so many readers have taken my stories into their hearts and put my books on their reread and keeper shelves.
I LOVE marriage on the rocks romance and this book delivered on the front deliciously. Add in the mafia angle and I was hooked. The Catalina/Severu parts (the couple from the next book, which is technically book two although this is billed as a prequel) was fine, but I was really here for Guilia and Rafe. And I loved every second of their story.
I will definitely continue with this series.
My review for book two (which I read prior to this one, because rule breaker) can be found HERE.
I would have liked this better if it just focused on one couple instead of two.
The first couple have been married for several years and have a 3 yr old son. They were an arranged match as is the norm in their 'made men' lifestyles. But although they love each other, neither has said so to the other and there is a huge lack of communication. The story starts out with a crazy scene that gets the reader all up in arms against the husband. But then their story just fizzles away and was kinda disappointing. I mean they have their HEA and all, but there was some lack of follow through with side characters and their romance became very much secondary to the next romance.
This second romance leads in to the next book of the series. So there's a HUGE cliffhanger here. But if you intend to read the next book you really should read this one first. It sounds like it will really juicy!
So all in all it was entertaining yet a bit frustrating. I do love LM's writing style. I feel she often has a good grasp on how people would react and keeps her heroines somewhat empowered. No doormats! They are usually fair-minded, patient and practical. Just what is needed to knock some sense into the heroes!
I don't generally gravitate to mc, mafia or pirate romances. It's hard to romanticize someone who deals in narcotics and/or steals, murders and rapes for a living. But if anyone can get me to overlook those significant detractors, it's Lucy Monroe ; )
i think this is a great prequel for this series. though i would've wanted to read more about giulia and raff. and i'm excited to read more about catalina and severu.
giulia (28) and raff (33) are already married for six years in this book. they got arranged since she was 12 and they got married when she graduated from college. i really want to know more about them but i guess that's not going to happen. the only issue i had with their story is the fact that it took raff six years to say "ti amo". he said he love her but he never told her because he thought actions were enough to show how he feels. i mean dude, actions are good but some words will work wonders too, just saying.
as for catalina (25) and severu (35). he's engaged to her younger sister, carlotta (19), he's not interested in this union but he's doing it for the la famiglia. but lina and severu seems to be more attracted to one another instead. and the ending for this prequel is carlotta running away and catalina replacing her as severu's bride. i'm interested with their book because the few moments they had in this prequel were enough to build some tension between them. and honestly speaking the theme is just like the "The Sweetest Oblivion" but who cares, i'll still read it anyway.
overall, this prequel definitely set some tension for the next book and i'm going to find out what will happen to lina and severu.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I liked Guilia & Raff’s story but I’m glad I’ve read this after Urgent Vows because I hated Severu’s discard of Catalina more. I prefer obsessed Hs, not ones that chooses OWs because they are safer. They shouldn’t!
Good and entertaining even if it’s mafia. There’s some gore but I skipped those parts and there weren’t many. I’m no fan of mafia stories, but beside the mafia lifestyle I liked the interactions between the hero and the heroine. She’s no doormat, she gives as much as she takes and she doesn’t take shit from anyone not even her husband the boss. There’s the usual LM trend, that is, low angst and a lot of communication between the characters. She’s surely sense and sensibility kind of writer. Her heroines are no nonsense women and yes, they may get angry but they’re easily persuaded by a man explaining things. The hero is sweet and reasonable, he’s not a jerk and an ahole. He agrees with her and apologizes when he realizes he’s made a mistake. He says ily first. There’s another story that I think I’ll read, about a woman who’s attracted by her sister fiance. Safe, basically the plot is about the heroine who’s forced to a medical test because of her infertility, she was on a IUD instead. Her husband didn’t tell her about the visit and she didn’t tell the husband she was on contraception. Both made a mistake, the hero apologized. He also realizes he’s might have not have been very good in showing his wife how much he loves her. As I said. Cute and low angst. One thing I did not like, absolutely. Some of the Italian names are spelled wrong. In a time where you only have to google to find the answer this seems very lazy. Miceli and Severu are not correct and I don’t think that even Italian emigrants could spell those names so badly. I suppose it was Michele and Severo. Google would have helped.
4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - Liked it! ==================== I started reading without much expectation, but I ended up liking it. Giulia at the gynecologist made me laugh a lot and if I were her, I wouldn't trust her bodyguard anymore. I'll start reading the next one.
The first story was awful. Sad that after so many years of marriage those two still didn't communicate at all, but mostly annoyed with him because he clearly didn't demand respect FOR his wife. IF her doctor AND her guard think its ok to restrain her and forcibly remove her birth control and her "guard" who is a woman doesn't care "because her husband must be ok with it" it shows that everyone treats her like his property. That guard should have been fired, but she wasn't and that messed up the story even more.
💍Marriage in Trouble ⚠️Discussion about fertility issue ⚠️Parental Abuse
Guilia De Luca grew up in a mafia family as a daughter of the New York Cosa Nostra’s Don Her marriage was arranged since she was just 12 years old. As she got older, she did fall in love with her intended, Raffaele Mancini. They were supposed to be married when Guilia turned 18, but Raffaele managed to convince the family to delay their union until she finished her degree. Once they finally got married, Guilia eventually figured out that Raffaele never loved her and always put the family above all else. Now 6 years after their marriage, they now have a son and live a dull married life. Though their sex life is very active, Giulia never got pregnant again after their first son. Raffaele, ordered by his father, made an appointment for Guila to see a fertility doctor, without her knowledge. This enraged Guilia to the point that she tried to shoot the doctor for him to back off. She then marches into her husband’s office and starts stripping in front of him and his men to show how angry she is (what a badass, I love it!). After much-needed discussion, they discover that their marriage is not as stable as they think….
I love marriage in trouble trope, and this one is the first book I read that is set in the mafia world. Usually, we start from the beginning or before their marriage, but this one sets years after. This book also serves as a prequel to the next book, which I haven’t read. It consists of two couples, but Guilia and Raf are the focus, the other is Severu (Guilia’s brother and the current Don of New York’s Cosa Nostra) and his future arranged marriage wife. Guilia and Raf will have a HEA, and the book will end with a cliffhanger for Severu and Catalina’s story.
After reading a couple of Lucy Monroe’s books, I’m happy to say that she always wrote a strong and fierce heroine, and I love them! Guilia already resigned to be a good mafia wife who is only good enough to breed an heir for her husband, at least that is what she thought. There’s a lot of miscommunication between them, and her pride prevents her from ever confirming all of her doubts and fears to her husband. That’s why Raf’s action enraged her so much and rightfully so, the man never communicated his feelings properly!
Raffaele is just a typical mafia man who always puts family and work as a priority, but it doesn’t mean he doesn’t love his wife. He just having a hard time showing his feelings as it will be viewed as a weakness in a mafia world, especially with him still working under his father, The Don. When he realizes his mistake, he’s determined to fix it but will an apology be enough to convince his wife of his love?
"How can you say you love me when you don't talk to me?"
I love the progress of their relationship, we got a glimpse of their relationship in the past. Why did Gulia think her husband didn’t love her and why she didn’t get pregnant again after their first son. We also see from Raf’s POV, how he was oblivious to how his actions were perceived by his wife. Basically, he’s just clueless (men, what do you expect?), but it was the nature of mafia men, they were raised to be ruthless and not show or talk about their feelings.
"I love you, cuore mio." "There needs to be a stronger word than love. You own my soul, amate."
There’s some inconsistency in the naming of characters, but I think it might be just a typo. Some parts may be a tad bit too repetitive which could be distracting. But overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and looking forward to read the next one in this series.
The book opened with one of the most explosive beginning I’d ever read. WOW. Just WOW. I did not expect anything on this, afraid I may get disappointed, but the first chapter gave me the chills and I'm like, "Okay baby, let's go!" The Hero was described as a psychotic individual bent on getting his way, one way or another, regardless if it's against his wife's wishes.
Oh wait, there are 2 main couples in this book! And that's a first. Initially, I was glued to the couple I described above, but that soon was concluded and now I am dying to know how the second couple; Catalina and the Don would fare. I can't wait to get my hands on the next one.
Not too long. Angsty. Full of good supporting characters. Not too much mafia stuff that usually bores me. Good enough as a side piece. Nice. Nice.
I have no idea how Guilia and Raff fell in love tbh. They started off very angry at each other and boom 100 pages later they were like you know I love you right. Like how did they not communicate for 6 years of their marriage??? It makes no sense to me. And then out of nowhere Raff finds a backbone and stands up to his dad for the first time when he never did all his life. I was just very confused and I was hoping for more of a marriage in crisis story which it didn’t deliver.
Severu and Catalina on the other have burning chemistry and I’m just here for Severu to have touch her and die vibes in the next book. I’m so excited.
thrilled I found this author! she’s legitimately amazing.
This was a great story with a setup for the next book woven throughout. It was a different type of format than I’m used to, and it worked flawlessly when it really didn’t seem like it would. man oh man did it keep me wanting to rush this amazing story that i was invested in just to get to next in line. I have a brand new favorite author! I have to admit that I’m only interested in the very best, and she is definitely one of the best. I have run over to the next book right this minute, no sleep for me tonight. Lol.
I like it but had a couple of issues with this book:
1. It's way too short for it to be about 2 couples 2. It's clunky and jarring to read because the author seldom uses contractions. Nails. On. Chalkboard!
Concurrent storylines of 2 mafia dons, one in Vegas, one in NY both involving their wayward love lives. .In Vegas an arranged marriage goes comically sideways w misunderstanding. In NY an arranged marriage is in the works, but not going as planned! Parties are related\interrelated Entertaining
Me hubiera gustado leer más sobre la historia Guilia y Raff, me pareció muy entretenido. Me dejó con curiosidad la otra historia, la de Catalina y Severu pero siento que no es para mí. Quien sabe si en unos meses me anime a leer esta serie.
This was so cheesy and over the top. These people have absolutely no communication skills and lack chemistry as well.
The whole book, Raff and Giulia never once planned their life together. Each one unilaterally made decisions for the other and just expected the other to go along with it. Family planning is always a hot topic, but both individuals need to have a serious discussion about their wants and expectations. Secretly getting on birth control and randomly deciding to get a vasectomy are not indications of a healthy relationship.
Catalina and the other guy were blah so I pretty much skipped every chapter of theirs.
GIULIA Our marriage cemented the alliance between our families. Emotions shouldn't come into it, but I fell in love with the ruthless underboss I married. Only to him, I'm nothing more than incubator to carry his heirs. I adore our son, but I've been putting off having another child. Raff is going to flip when he finds out about the birth control.

Convenient wife was a fabulous book from beginning to end. Wow, what a story line this book had. The characters were fantastic which made the story very enjoyable even though it has a cliff hanger. Lucy Monroe is a great author and this is just an example of her work.
I'm a bit sceptical about this novella. I don't really get its purpose. On one hand, we have Giula and Raffaele. He's the underboss (his father being the Las Vegas don) and has been married to Giula for 6 years. They have a 3 years old son. And the reader is throw into their story but has no idea what's going on. Where's the beginning? What we know is that 6 years into their marriage they live very separate lives. He's always busy and she's taking care of their son and laundry money through charities. That's it. Then out of nowhere, he decides to mingle with her life in the worst way. They finally begin to talk and realise they're in love. That's it, that's their story. I don't get it.
I won't go into Catalina and Severu's beginning here I don't get the point to split their story into 2 books.
A perfect introduction to this interesting mafia romance series and available in kindle unlimited at the moment. Just what I like, really strong main characters and solid mafia action. It's beautifully written, with steamy romance scenes.
The situations are not really too dark in this book, but there are some descriptive murder scenes - which I enjoyed. But, the darker the better for me, when it comes to mafia romances! I'm looking forward to reading the series as it unfolds. This is a longer novella length and introduces the mafia families gradually, so you don't become too confused with lots of characters flooding the story at the beginning. Points of view are from several people, which I liked.
(P.S. - I wish more Mills and Boon authors would break out of that confining bubble like Ms Monroe has. The readers would have so many more fabulous stories to embrace.)
I love marriage in peril stories and this was more of a novella than a full length because it focused on two couples. I liked that even though Guilia and Raff had communication issues the sex between them was always 🔥🔥🔥 and they were building a connection without really knowing it. Also thankfully no OW drama nonsense and they were completely loyal to each other.
Well written, good mafia type setting. The other couple is set up for the next book, the H is supposed to marry the h’s sister and there ends up being a bride switch at the end. It didn’t bother me because it’s obvious that there are zero feelings of attraction on either side of the sister and the H, and nothing physical ever happens between them. On to book two!
It has been a lifetime since I've read such a good mafia romance. This was insanely gripping and I was in love with all of the characters instantly.
Giulia and Raf were undoubtedly my favorites because I found a lot of their story relatable. It's not often we get a mafia romance that starts 3 years in to the marriage. This was a treat.
Catalina and Severu's story is just beginning and I loved the plot twist. I could see it coming just before it happened, Carlotta deserves her own book after being underestimated by everyone, including Catalina. I can't wait to see where this story goes. But oh so glad that Catalina is getting what she wants.. and Severu too.
I want to immerse myself in their world for the next couple of days. Looking forward to this series!
Raff and Guilia from Las Vegas, and Severu and Catalina from New York. I love the first couple, especially Guilia. She’s feisty and she’s also brave. Raff has finally figured out that he loves his wife so hopefully he’ll stop letting his father interfere with their marriage.
Severu is the Don in New York and he’s 35. He’s decided, for various reasons, that he should marry. He’s engaged to his consigliere’s younger daughter, who is 19. Why anyone would think this was a good idea is beyond me. Too big of an age gap.
The next in the series will have the continuation of their story, since it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen.
this read like a standard mafia story except for some pleasant surprises, like how the h shot an orderly and a fertility doctor (which was well deserved). I love that the h has spunk, and the H is not only not an asshole but was actually kind of sweet. their marriage was not in the rocks, tho, and the grovel did not so much happen as it was not warranted. still, a sweet, cute story so that was nice.
the severy-catalina story is even more standard than that of the main couple but I'm still going to read it. book is not too long or cluttered with lots of unncecessary plots and angst so there's that
I think this was misclassified as sa grovel trope.
