Vulcanul de Aur
Concepută în 1889, cartea Vulcanul de aur a fost publicată la un an după moartea autorului, în 1906, fiind revizuită şi editată de fiul său, Michel Verne. După moartea scriitorului şi editorului Pierre-Jules Hetzel, care se ocupase de publicarea romanelor sale, Jules Verne deviază de la obsesia romanelor cu tentă ştiinţifică şi începe să abordeze zone neexplorate până atunci. Încearcă chiar poveşti cu conţinut satiric sau filosofic. Romanul Vulcanul de aur, în care autorul explorează tentaţia goanei după aur, foarte prezentă în contextul contemporan, este unul dintre acestea.

Diğer Jules Verne'lere nazaran biraz daha sakin okunan ve sonuçsuz bir kitap oldu Altın Volkanı. Yazım dili ve hikaye örgüsü her zamanki gibi. Ama sanki Jules Verne'in bu kitabı yazarken kafası biraz karışık gibi geldi. Şöyle ki;
- İki ana karakterimiz otel ararken birinde yer bulamıyorlar ve sanırım JV bunu yazdığını unutuyor çünkü gecenin sonunda tekrar o yer bulamadıkları otele gidip kalıyorlar.
- Birdenbire STOP diye bir karakter örgüye dahil oluyor. Ancak bu köpekten başta hiç bahsedilmiyor, birden bire ortaya çıkıyor.
- Mesafeler (...) ayak, feet şeklinde "boşlukları doldur" tadında bırakılmış.

Altın Volkanı Jules Verne öldükten sonra yayımlanmış ve asıl metin oğlu Michael tarafından bir miktar değiştirilmiş. Klasik bir Verne romanı. Kuzey Kanada coğrafyasında zorlu bir macera ve bu maceraya kendilerini adayan iki kuzen... Verne çağ ötesi olan teknoloji öngörülerine bu kitapta fazla yer vermemiş.

I read this book as a child and re-read it now as an adult. It is still a great read full of adventure and fun.

I looked up the Wikipedia article on Jules Verne after I finished this posthumously-published novel, The Golden Volcano, and I learned some new facts that were somewhat surprising to me. Foremost among those is that while the English-speaking world has thought of Verne as primarily a science fiction writer, and indeed sometimes bestows on him the title “The Father of Science Fiction,” his literary output extends considerably into other genres. Verne loved to collect facts, particularly geographic and scientific, and to weave those facts into his writing. For a good part of his writing career, Verne was commissioned by the editor Pierre-Jules Hetzel to write a collection of serialized novels on the theme “Voyages extraordinaires” (Extraordinary Journeys) in order to entertain and educate the magazine's readers with the facts he had collected on this region or that. If Verne needed an unusual means of transportation in order for his voyage to be possible, then he imagined what technology might be able to provide in the near future, based on the science at the time. Hence, balloon travel for his book Five Weeks in a Balloon or submarine travel for Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.
The Golden Volcano certainly fits well within the concept of Extraordinary Journeys, even though it was not finished before Hetzel died in 1886 and not published before Verne himself died in 1905. There are only two bits of it that lean slightly toward the fantastic. One is the suggestion that a volcano can bring up large amounts of gold along with lava and ash, and leave gold nuggets and gold dust strewn about its crater. The second is the proposal that diverting a stream so as to pour water into the crater of a volcano will make it erupt. (This idea has been used more recently in the Amazon Original TV series “Rings of Power.”)
I came away from this book with two observations. There are the bones of an enjoyable story here, but Verne has padded the story with so very much description and detail that it seems to take forever for the reader to move from one bit of action to another. The book could be condensed down to a novella of 80 to 100 pages and lose nothing essential, while becoming a lot more fun to read. My second observation - and I don't know if this is Verne's fault or the translator's - is that the narrator almost seems to be more focused on his audience than on the characters and action of his story. When I read fiction, it doesn't usually take long before I am right there in each scene in my imagination. For The Golden Volcano, I more easily imagined myself to be sitting in an auditorium listening to someone tell this story, perhaps while watching a slide show, and I just didn't feel present with the characters or very directly engaged with the story. Hence, my rating of 2 stars. It's not a terrible book, just over-stuffed and too indirect.
For those that would like to know the story, but don't want to read the novel for themselves, I'll include a more complete synopsis than usual, and add "spoiler" tags. Two young and unmarried Canadian men, cousins, living in Montreal in 1898, learn that an uncle (believed to be the only living member of their family besides themselves) has passed away in Dawson City, in the Yukon territory. He had just purchased a gold-mining claim on Forty-Mile River, a tributary of the Yukon River, where gold had been discovered a year or two earlier. This claim now was the inheritance of Summy Skim and his cousin Ben Raddle. (There is some evidence that Verne had heard the name Sammy and had recorded it incorrectly.) Summy is a gentleman-farmer and hunter; Ben has trained as an engineer. The two men are fairly well-off; they jointly own a house in Montreal as well as an estate in the countryside, with tenant farmers who provide them a decent income. Summy wants to sell the claim (and, in fact, they have a $5,000 offer, equivalent to about $200,000 in 2025). Ben refuses to consent to the sale until he has seen the claim and evaluated its potential value for himself. The two travel by train from Montreal to Vancouver, by steamship to Skagway, on foot over the Chilkoot pass, by boat to Dawson City, and finally by horse-drawn cart out to the claim itself.

¿Por qué dos lecturas empezando y terminando los mismos días? Sencillo: he leído dos ediciones diferentes a la vez. La primera es la que aparece aquí, y la segunda es, como siempre, la de Sáenz de Jubera.
Esto requiere una pequeña explicación. La versión de El Volcán de Oro que todos conocemos, y que se sigue publicando, no es el libro que originalmente escribió Verne. Hasta hace poco se desconocían los cambios que Michel Verne, hijo del autor, había introducido en algunas de las obras póstumas, entre ellas esta.
Pero la casualidad quiso que se descubriera el manuscrito original, por lo que se pudo determinar exactamente los cambios introducidos. La versión original es algo más corta que la publicada, y entre todos los cambios introducidos, los más importantes son dos. En la original, las dos mujeres son hermanas religiosas que van a ayudar en un Hospicio de Dawson-City, mientras que en la modificada por Michel son dos aventureras, feminista una de ellas y que se hace prospectriz mientras que la otra sí, la otra se emplea en un hospital.
EL otro cambio importante es el final. Originalmente los dos primos no obtienen nada de nada, y se vuelven más pobres que cuando partieron, que es la tesis original de Verne (y una constante en él): la fiebre del oro no es buena para nadie. En la versión publicada, los dos primos no solo obtienen rendimiento del volcán, sino que cuando vuelven su parcela se ha recuperado y es una de las más productivas de toda la zona. Además, los primos se casan con las primas y son felices y comieron perdices.
Personalmente, me gusta mucho más la versión modificada. Aparte alguna tontada, es mucho más rica, más dinámica y se parece mucho más a las primeras obras de Verne, con aventuras muy bien descritas mejor llevadas a trámite. Es cierto que no es la original, pero es la que más me gusta.
Otra cosa de la versión original, es que es un borrador antes de que Verne le diera su repaso con la primera galerada, cosa que habría arreglado los huecos y los errores del texto, que tiene algunos.
Una última puntualización: algunos estudiosos de Verne se han tomado a cachondeo la caza del "oriñal" como in invento del autor, pero no es cierto, ya que oriñal es el nombre del alce americano, como cualquier puede leer en la wikipedia si lo busca.

Bir Verne daha tamamlandı.. Aslında bu kitabı daha (neredeyse iki yıl) önce de okumuştum. Ve de çok sevmiştim
İki kuzen (Summy Skim ve Ben Raddle) amcalarının ölümünden sonra onun sahip olduğu 129 numaralı Klondike altın yatağını miras alırlar. Summy Skim yatağın satılmasından yana. Ben Raddle da öyle ama Ben Raddle yatağın gerçek değerini öğrenmek için Klondike'a gitmekten yana birde. Kuzenler yola çıkarlar ve altın yatağını araştırmaya giderler..

This is a somewhat conventional adventure story without the elements of exotic technology that Verne was most famous for. It is the story of two cousins, living in French Canada, who discover that a deceased uncle has left them a gold mine near Dawson in Western Canada. After some discussion, they cousins decide visit the mine in order to figure out what to do with it. The original version was edited by Verne's son Michel and Michel made some changes that modern Jules Verne fans find upsetting. This version is an edited version of the original manuscript. The editor has attempted to make the corrections that Verne's original editors would have made without some of the additions.
This novel has some of the problems of a first or second draft. There are repetitions, some of the characters are flat. The main characters are predictable, particularly if you have read Verne before. The concluding portion of the novel has all the excitement that Verne was famous for and is the reason to read this novel. If you are a Jules Verne fan, as I am, you will enjoy it well enough. If you have never read Verne before, this would not be the place to start

Ma era questo il Verne che ci trascinava in letture compulsive, due o tre giorni senza quasi prendere fiato? Son riuscita a malapena a riconoscere qua e là nelle parole dei protagonisti il fantasma di quelle battute che ci mandavano in un delirio di risate, e che non desterebbero la benché minima reazione nei giovani lettori d'oggi. Ma che ragazzi eravamo? Anche mettendo in conto l'impressione di generale non-finitezza del romanzo, pubblicato postumo, e i generosi tagli che riducevano lo spessore dei nostri 'libri per ragazzi' ho faticato ad arrivare alla fine, facendomi strada tra decine e decine di pagine dedicate a descrizioni geografiche: era così anche per gli amatissimi 'Michele Strogoff' e 'I figli del Capitano Grant'?
Certo, il mondo della metà del secolo scorso era ancora un pianeta sconosciuto: e un viaggio nella steppa siberiana, in Australia o tra i ghiacci del Klondike aveva lo stesso sapore fantastico di un improbabile (allora) 'giro intorno alla luna'...

El volcán de oro es un libro que demuestra una excelente calidad narrativa al repasar las aventuras de los dos primos protagonistas. El autor maneja a la perfección las precarias tecnologías auríferas de la época y las pone a disposición de los lectores, conjugándolas en la constante aventura que supone para Summy y Ben adentrarse en aquellos terrenos alaskianos indomables en busca de oro.
La única dificultad que tuve al leer el texto fue que a ratos la enumeración de parajes y rutas que siguen los hombres se vuelve tediosa, pero imagino que eso tiene más que ver con un tipo de literatura vinculada al "realismo" propio de la época, al que probablemente Verne trató de apegarse. Por otro lado, los quiebres entre los personajes y las ansias por el enriquecimiento desmedido quedan, en estas páginas, fielmente retratados.

Kniha se odehrává před rokem 1900 v období zlaté horečky na Klondajku. Obsahuje popis cesty na místo těžby a okolní geografii, takže nenásilně čtenáře provede touto zapadlou částí světa.
Děj začíná v Kanadě v Montrealu na rodiném sídle Skima - mladý muž, bratranec druhého hlavního hrdiny Bena. Ten zdědí po svém strýci claim na těžbu zlata na Aljašce a protože je podnikavý, vytáhne i svého usedlého bratrance na cestu, aby nový majetek obhlídli a výhodně prodali. Po cestě potkají dvě mladé sestry, které také cestují na Klondajk - do Davson City. jedna tam bude dělat zdravotní sestru a druhou láká těžba zlata. Po cestě se spřátelí. Potkají i zlosyna Huntera, který těží hned vedle jejich claimu a stanou se z nich nepřátelé. Po odlouhé cestě se dostanou na místo a začnou těžit. Vypadá to nadějně, ale přijde zemětřesení a jejich claim se ocitne pod vodou a Ben je zraněn, takže nemohou před zimou odjet. Skim je naštvaný, ale musí zůstat. Navíc si oblíbil sestru Hanu a nechce se od ní hnout. V zimě nastane další nečekaná změna, když se jim dostane do rukou mapa umírajícího prospektora, která je má dovést ke zlaté sopce kdesi u ústí řeky Mackenzie. Protože Bena už plně chytla zlatá horečka, vytvoří výpravu i se svým bratrancem, Hanou a několika pomocníky, aby horu vypátrali. Když k ni dojdou, zjistí, že sopka je nyní aktivní a v kráteru nelze těžit. Zatímco čekají, až hora vyvrhne zlato erupcí, nebo se utiší, přijde druhá skupina lidí vedená zlosynem Hunterem. Dojde mezi nimi k přestřelce a obléhání, během kterého navedou vodu do sopky, která pak zahájí erupci. Sice zničí většinu skupiny hrdlořezů a ze zbytkem už si poradí pomací zbraní, současně ale zničí i všechno zlato, které vyvrhne do oceánu. Musí se tedy spokojit s jedním velkým nuggetem a vrátit se zpět do Dawson city. Tam je ale čeká dobrá zpráva, že výbuch sopky způsobil zemětřesení, které opět vyzvedlo jejich claim a druhá ze seter na něm mezitím zahájila těžbu, která všem přinesla pohádkové bohatství. Všichni mají radost, vezmou se a vrátí do Montrealu, kde žijí šťastně až do smrti...

Ten zdědí po svém strýci claim na těžbu zlata na Aljašce a protože je podnikavý, vytáhne i svého usedlého bratrance na cestu, aby nový majetek obhlídli a výhodně prodali. Po cestě potkají dvě mladé sestry, které také cestují na Klondajk - do Davson City. jedna tam bude dělat zdravotní sestru a druhou láká těžba zlata. Po cestě se spřátelí. Potkají i zlosyna Huntera, který těží hned vedle jejich claimu a stanou se z nich nepřátelé. Po odlouhé cestě se dostanou na místo a začnou těžit. Vypadá to nadějně, ale přijde zemětřesení a jejich claim se ocitne pod vodou a Ben je zraněn, takže nemohou před zimou odjet. Skim je naštvaný, ale musí zůstat. Navíc si oblíbil sestru Hanu a nechce se od ní hnout. V zimě nastane další nečekaná změna, když se jim dostane do rukou mapa umírajícího prospektora, která je má dovést ke zlaté sopce kdesi u ústí řeky Mackenzie. Protože Bena už plně chytla zlatá horečka, vytvoří výpravu i se svým bratrancem, Hanou a několika pomocníky, aby horu vypátrali. Když k ni dojdou, zjistí, že sopka je nyní aktivní a v kráteru nelze těžit. Zatímco čekají, až hora vyvrhne zlato erupcí, nebo se utiší, přijde druhá skupina lidí vedená zlosynem Hunterem. Dojde mezi nimi k přestřelce a obléhání, během kterého navedou vodu do sopky, která pak zahájí erupci. Sice zničí většinu skupiny hrdlořezů a ze zbytkem už si poradí pomací zbraní, současně ale zničí i všechno zlato, které vyvrhne do oceánu. Musí se tedy spokojit s jedním velkým nuggetem a vrátit se zpět do Dawson city. Tam je ale čeká dobrá zpráva, že výbuch sopky způsobil zemětřesení, které opět vyzvedlo jejich claim a druhá ze seter na něm mezitím zahájila těžbu, která všem přinesla pohádkové bohatství. Všichni mají radost, vezmou se a vrátí do Montrealu, kde žijí šťastně až do smrti...

Scrisoarea glăsuia astfel:
Maestrul Snubbin prezintă salutări domnului Summy Skim şi-l roagă să treacă fără întârziere pe la biroul său, pentru o problemă care-l interesează.
În ce problemă voia oare notarul să stea de vorbă cu domnul Summy Skim? Ca toată lumea din Montreal, acesta cunoştea pe maestrul Snubbin, om foarte de treabă şi bun sfătuitor. On suit deux Canadiens, Ben Raddle et Summy Skim, qui héritent d'une concession dans le Klondike. L'un est enthousiaste d'aller prospecter tandis que l'autre se méfie de la ruée vers l'or et n'attend que de rentrer chez lui à Montréal. Ce livre plein de rebondissements et d'aventure nous permet de nous plonger au coeur de cet événement historique où la fièvre de l'or a bouleversé la région du Klondike. De Dawson City aux confins de l'Alaska, les héros principaux se laisseront happer par cette fièvre, de gré ou de force, ils devront affronter les autres prospecteurs dans scrupule, dont les Texans sans foi ni loi Hunter et Malone. Le volcan d'or, cette montagne de légende qui cracherait de l'or, est alors le rêve ultime du prospecteur, un rêve que Jules Verne regarde avec un œil très critique, puisque toutes les entreprises des deux frères semblent à chaque fois vouées à l'échec. Rien de bon ne peut résulter de cette folie de l'or. Je conseille de lire la version originale non remaniée par le fils de Jules Verne, Michel, éditée par Olivier Dumas édition folio.

Lo primero que les diré, es que: se pueden ahorrar leer la primera parte, con tan solo leer los tres primeros capítulos basta. La primera parte es muy aburrida, demasiados detalles sobre el viaje, las paradas, los lugares.
Lo seguí leyendo porque tres motivos:
1) me intrigada el título
2) soy fan de Verne
3) por un personaje del libro.
Los personajes me cayeron bien de entrada sobre todo Summy, que tiene razgos en su forma de pensar, similares a las mías. Se puede notar que los personajes principales están bien construidos.
Desde la segunda parte hasta el final, creo que se hubiera contado con menos palabras.
Por último, la parte del dichoso volcán de oro fue la más interesante, pero pensé que tendría otro final.

Jules Verne’s The Golden Volcano is an adventurous, richly detailed tale set against the rugged backdrop of the Klondike Gold Rush. The novel brims with vivid descriptions of the harsh northern landscapes, and Verne’s knack for weaving factual detail into gripping fiction shines throughout. The characters, while at times a bit archetypal, are compelling enough to keep you invested, and the pacing balances moments of peril with stretches of exploration and wonder. Some passages feel slightly drawn out, but the overarching journey and the sense of discovery more than make up for it. It’s a captivating read that rewards patience with a satisfying blend of adventure and atmosphere.

The 56th Extraordinary Voyage is the second out of eight posthumous novels in the series. The story takes us to the Klondike, in northwestern Canada, near the frontier with Alaska. The novel is set during the Klondike Gold Rush, which happened at the end of the 19th century.

What is it about?: In the middle of the Gold Rush, two French-Canadian cousins inherit from their late uncle a mining claim on the shores of the Klondike. They travel to the Yukon to investigate their claim. Instead they find disaster, until chance gives them information of a volcano filled with gold.
As I have commented in previous reviews, the version I'm reading of the posthumous novels is the one that was modified by Michel Verne and originally published as part of the Extraordinary Voyages. Much later, in the last part of the 20th century, the original manuscripts left by Jules Verne were discovered, and the fact that his son Michel had edited and modified those manuscripts for publication became known. Nowadays, the original versions without Michel's modifications have also been published, but they are more difficult to find than the originally published versions. For the eight posthumous novel, if your edition doesn't explicitly say that it's the unmodified Jules Verne version, you can assume that you are reading the version edited by Michel, which after all is the one that was published originally.
The reason I haven't sought the unmodified Jules Verne versions is that the modifications Michel introduced consisted mostly in adding a few more episodes of action and adventure, which in my opinion is a good thing, since these posthumous novels were a bit lacking in that department.
On the other hand, this particular story, The Golden Volcano, is the one where Michel's changes were more controversial, since he changed Jules' ending, undermining the message that his father had intended. Indeed, Jules Verne had been very weary of the greed associated with the gold rushes, and had intended this novel as a cautionary tale, where the characters did not profit despite their efforts and suffering. Michel added a romantic subplot and changed the ending to a more conventional happy ending.
Be that as it may, I read the version with Michel's modifications, the same as I'm doing with all the other posthumous Extraordinary Voyages.
The novel starts rather slowly, mostly presenting the two cousins who are the main characters and showing how they find out about their late uncle's claim that they had inherited. Summy Skim is a quiet man, satisfied with his lot in life, while his cousin Ben Raddle, an engineer, is much more adventurous and restless.
The two of them depart for the Klondike to try to determine the value of their claim, since they do not want to blindly accept a purchase offer they have received. The journey is not the same kind of adventure as in many early Verne novels, since they are not completely on their own in the wilderness, but they take advantage of all the infrastructure that has popped up to cater to the traveling miners. Nevertheless, the natural conditions are harsh, and Verne depicts well the suffering that many miners and their families experienced.
During the journey they find a couple of female prospectors and associate with them (this is part of the romantic subplot that Michel added, since in the original they were nuns), while they have clashes with a group of villains. After much work, all seems to be going well with them when a natural disaster makes them lose everything. It is then that by chance they find information about a legendary Golden Volcano filled with gold, and they depart on a risky adventure to try to find it. This part has more action and adventure than the first part of the novel.
Michel's change to the ending makes the story more conventional and safer from a commercial point of view. However, despite my general satisfaction with Michel's changes, in this case it might have been more interesting to keep the original ending, so as not to undermine the original message.
Enjoyment factor: The story is relatively long, and maybe the first part goes a bit slowly, but I found it a pleasant and interesting read, even if it did not grab me as much as some Verne novels.

The Golden Volcano focuses upon two cousins, Summy Skim and Ben Raddle, whose uncle has died, leaving them gold claim No. 129 on the Fortymile River. The cousins must make the perilous journey from their home in Montreal, Canada, to Klondike, which borders Alaska, in order to claim their inheritance. During their journey, they are enticed by the legend of the Golden Mount, an extinct volcano filled with gold.
Verne provides great detail throughout the novel. Even telling of the higher prices in the gold-fueled cities, “everything in the capital of Klondike was exorbitantly priced….sugar sold for thirty or forty cents a pound; salt pork, twenty five cents; canned meat, forty cents a can….” (p. 116). But the main theme of the novel is Verne’s attitude towards the gold itself, “What a disease this gold fever is! It isn’t a sporadic illness that can be cured with quinine of some sort. No one ever recovers from it, I see,” (p. 149). The theme that as a result of the “gold fever” one will only come back, if at all, poorer than before, is spread throughout. As well as immense greed of the gold, “No! You have to have too much, and perhaps too much is not enough.” (p. 149)
Verne’s view and vivid description of the search for gold and its consequences, sheds light upon human nature and its disastrous effects. And although The Golden Volcano is one of Verne’s lesser known works, it will continue to live on in literary history.

This book was OK. It was a slow read. I'm still not sure if this was because it was a very slow crescendo to build suspense, or actually just a boring story.
I think I liked the idea of the story more than the execution of it. The concept had the potential to be really interesting, but the characters and plot just lacked the development to fulfill it. It felt like this story was just missing the "magic" of some of his previous works.
