Kate Forster is not new to the writing scene and is often known for her beautifully written young romance stories aimed towards teen girls. Her latest book debuts have found themselves in the exciting new series Smitten which includes the novel Unlucky Break. The characters and story line in this fantastic novel are intriguing from the word go, making it one of those books you just can’t put down.
When Andie Powers finds herself on a plane to Los Angeles after the recent death of her mother and the devastating discovering of her so-called best friend and boyfriend in bed together this vintage loving Melbourne girl decides that Hollywood is her best bet. When Andie arrives at her Aunt Cece’s dream mansion she is lavished with gifts, unlimited credit cards, a brand-new BMW and an amazing new best friend. Although it’s a fresh start for Andie she can’t help but feel this place is fake and perhaps isn’t really for her. It’s only after a run in with bad-boy movie star James Hawthorn that she discovers something real. Unlucky Break takes us through a truly ravishing and emotional journey leaving us feeling hot and flustered at times as Andie works her way through love, loss and laughter.
I found this sexy and enthralling book an easy escape whilst endeavouring a little bit of “me time”. I’d definitely recommend Unlucky Break to anyone wishing to escape the stress of reality and sink themselves into a little bit of cheeky romance.
What it's about: Andie has just moved to L.A. to live with her aunt, after the death of her mother. She is thrown into a world she never thought she would ever see - celebrities, money and deep dark secrets.
What I thought: Andie was a good main character. She had her bad moments, but mostly she had her stuff together. James Hawthorn is the bad-boy movie star that sweeps her off her feet, but there is more to him that meets the eye. She becomes best friends with a former child-star, and is introduced to money and luxury by her aunt Cece. Everything a girl dreams she has, Unlucky Break has it. Including James' crazy drug-addicted ex-girlfriend, just to shake things up. This book is full of twists that I never saw coming, and gave the story extra depth - making it more than just a teen romance.
Plus who doesn't want to read a story about an average girl getting the movie star? Answer: No-one.
The Good: I love the look at Hollywood life we get. I thought it really showed just what could happen behind closed doors.
The Bad: While I loved it, I just couldn't help thinking unrealistic the whole way through.
this book was probably the best one out of the smitten romance series. it was a light read but a really enjoyable book. Nikki Morgan was just annoying as f*ck, i seriously just wanted to punch her and tell her to piss off haha. she was such a bitch. i swear, she was like a poisonous snake that just ugh idk she was just really annoying and julie was great i think that was her name i forgot the best friend haha and Cece was sweet and as unrealistic as it is, it was an enjoyable read. and damn i wish Cece was my aunt/mum ha spoiler oops
Andi's not having the best time. Her Dad was never in the picture, and her Mum's just died. Her Mum never gave up fighting, but this meant that she refused to make plans for Andi, leaving her effectively stranded, with no family in Australia and very few options. Oh, yeah - and she just caught her long-term boyfriend with her best friend. So, not a great month.
When Hollywood's darling and Andi's estranged aunt, Cece Powers, offers her a home in LA, Andi's mostly just relieved to have somewhere to go, even if she has no idea what she'll do with herself once she's there. Transplanted into the bright lights and huge city, she'll have to learn to navigate life amongst celebrities, paparazzi and people with far too much money. She'll also have to figure out what she wants to do and the kind of person she wants to be. It's time to grow up - and it might also be time to fall in love.
This book was adorable. It was a perfect mix of fluffy and dramatic, with longing looks and past hurts, a faux pas or three, a lot of misunderstandings, flirting, friendship, trust broken and rebuilt and a very happy curtain call for all involved.
Andi was a fairly standard main character - she's been forced to grow up too fast by circumstances: looking after her mother as she faded, and immediately being confronted with the secondary horror of a boyfriend and best friend's betrayal. She's a little bit lost and a lot hurt when we first meet her. LA and Aunt Cece are nothing like home. But they also offer new hope. Andi's not sure if she wants to be here - but then, she doesn't really want to be anywhere, any more, so why not Hollywood. Her development through the book was well handled, not smooth and not instantaneous, with a measure of realism.
We're very quickly introduced to the potential love interest: a super sexy, surprisingly smart, and (of course) famous movie star who has a bunch of personal baggage and provides a really good match to Andi intellectually and in terms of chemistry. We also meet Andi's future best friend, Jess, who lives next door to Andi and Cece. A ball of energy, Jess is a former child star who's spent her life in a Hollywood-shaped bubble and is desperately trying to figure out what's next. These two have a fabulous rapport, they challenge each other and support each other in equal measure.
The novel follows a well-worn path of hardship and missed connections eventually giving way to redemption and happiness, but in a really lovely way. I raced through this one, as at only 280 pages it is a light read indeed, and came away with that feeling you get after watching a great teen chick flick: contentment and optimism.
Perfect reading for teens and any young adults looking to escape into a safe place where hearts mend, fortune reigns and everything will be okay in the end.
Andie Powers (18) has completely had it: finally the school year is over. Last year was terrible for her. Her boyfriend left her for her best friend and her mum died after a year of serious illness. Andie took care of her during this illness.
Then everything changes: she leaves Melbourne (Australia) to live with her rich aunt in Los Angeles. Suddenly she lives in a huge house, has a beautiful car, a big bank account and a whole new BFF. All thanks to her aunt. But for Andie this is a whole crazy world. Every time she crosses the street she sees a celebrity.
On a party she meets the famous movie star James Hawthorn. Immediately they have a connection. Andie is totally in love with him, but she knows that he won’t be in love with a regular girl. When Andie makes a stupid mistake, she becomes an important person in his life. So maybe living in Los Angeles is not so bad at all.
After some time her aunt confesses Andie that she is her real mother. Andie is in shock. However, now she knows what she wants to do with her life.
I found the book very nice. I read the book in three days, because I liked it so very much. Every time I wanted to know how it would end, so I kept on reading. It is nice because it is not a sad romance story. There is a lot of adventure and romance, so that is a nice mix. Even though I like the book, it is quite unbelievable, of course you can move to Los Angeles and meet some celebrities, but it is not very likely. However, in this book that is not a problem.
This is a really girls book, I think that boys would not enjoy it. So every girl in the age of 12-15 should read this book.
When I was reading this book, I can't help but feel how cliché everything is. I mean how very uncommon is the idea of A popular Hollywood actor falling in love with an ordinary girl. A lot of it was relatively predictable, yes there are some suprises but it was quite a giveaway if you pay attention with the details. But over all, I still find this book enjoyable and fun to read. I actually recommend this book as a summer read.
Andie is having a rough time; fresh out of high school with no plans, her mum just died of cancer, and she found her boyfriend in bed with her best friend. Packing her Melbourne life into a rucksack, Andie heads for Los Angeles to live with her estranged Aunt Cece, who happens to be a Hollywood star.
While grieving the loss of her mum, Andie stumbles through life in LA, and through a series of unfortunate circumstances she reluctantly finds herself stuck as the personal assistant to James Hawthorn - Hollywood's 'it' boy.
This is a fresh teen novel, offering readers a chance to become absorbed in the creative storyline and themes of love, betrayal and family.
When I saw what this book was about, I thought “what a good little read.” I stand Corrected. Its an AMAZING read.
Andie Powers moves to LA to live with her aunt after her mothers death and her boyfriend cheating on her. Her aunt being a famous movie star She is completely out of her element, shes not used fame, money and the “fake” lifestyle that LA brings. While out one evening she (not dressed as herself) she meets heart throb actor James Hawthorn. Its the classic love story, with a few bumps and twists along the way.
I really enjoyed this novel. It is a light read which I finished really quickly as I just didn't want to put the book down. Andie, the main character, was realistic and relatable. I found some parts of the story humorous, some sad and some happy. I was surprised towards the end of the story when a hidden secret was uncovered but that only furthered my interest in the book. The author really captures the essence of life in Hollywood and actors and their attitudes in the novel. I would read this book again: it is the best teen romance I have read in a while.
A roller coaster of FUN, FRIENDSHIP and a HOT Hollywood hunk! Great to read something refreshing like this with some parts that I can totally relate to.Also a real easy read! Look forward to discovering the other titles from the Smitten series.
So sweet. I can’t wait to get to the next book in this series. I just noticed that I started with book 2 rather than book 1, but I imagine they all stand alone and the order won’t ruin the experience of love, romance, some spicy ornery people, and a strong wise character. Smitten: Unlucky Break is the second book I’ve read of Kate Forster’s and I like her stories so much that I am going to read several more, if not, all of her writings. I read ‘Starting Over at Acorn Cottage’ first and Tassie was a wonderful addition. Aunt Mom CeCe and Jess were my favorites in this book. My next read is ‘Smitten: Head Over High Heels’ which I imagine will bring me tears and laughter like the other 2 Forster books. And I am sure there will be a wise and fun character in that, as well. Onto the next! Review to come...
I read this book about three years ago when I was twelve. I recently remembered how much I loved it and wanted to read it again. Unfortunately, I forgot the name, so when I tell you I fucking SCOURED the internet to find it again, I'm not kidding.
Anyway, this was just as good as I remember it being. Honestly one of my favourite fluffy, romantic reads. Andie is likeable and real, and her chemistry with James is INSANE! Every encounter of theirs seriously had me smiling like an idiot. James was just the perfect, tortured heartthrob and I loved her friendship with Jess! The book made Hollywood sound gorgeous and glamourous and it really felt like I had stepped into that world.
This was a real-life fairy tale experience for me. And the first paperback book I've read, it'll always have a special place in my heart. And the writing style is very powerful too.
SPOILER ALERT Unlucky Break - Andie should have told James about everything that had happened and about how she felt. Discuss. ‘Unlucky Break,’ by Kate Forster shows how trust can be instantly lost if honesty is non-existent. Australian Andie Powers moved in with aunt Cece, which is a rich actress, in LA after her mum passed away. Things are different for her. She meets rich, Hollywood stars and James Hawthorn. Andie has a huge crush on James and everything goes slow and fine until there is a big turn. Andie runs over James with a golf cart and leaves him there. In order for no one to find out, Andie has to be James’s assistant. Will Andie be brave enough to tell James everything and let him know how she feels? Andie accepted to be James’s assistant because first, she felt guilt and second, she had no choice. James is really friendly with Andie and she is the only person he trusts. Andie was the only person that was allowed to clean James’s room or give him advice. Even though she knew that he trusted her though, she knew that she had broken his trust and she should have talked to him. Andie knew that somehow the truth would be out and James will know everything. When she tried telling James what she did, he was busy ‘exploring her body.’ ‘It can wait,’ he said. Andie should have stopped James so she could tell him that she was the one that run over him and she should have told him that she was the girl from Skyhigh Bar. Andie had also kept her feeling a secret. She loved James and when she was with him she felt something that she had never felt before, when she was with Cameron. She would hide all her feelings because she was afraid that he wouldn’t feel the same way about her, because he was a rich Hollywood star and she was just the Australian assistant. If she had told him, he would have told her about his feelings towards her, because he loved her too and because he refused to admit it for the same reason Andie did. Andie and James were happily together until James’s-lying-ex-girlfriend, Nikki, found Andie’s note book. Andie had written everything inside and Nikki wanted to take revenge. Nikki ended up telling James that Andie was the one that run over him and James broke up with Andie. That’s where Andie wished she had told him everything. If she hadn’t kept everything a secret, and she had actually told James everything from the beginning, James wouldn’t have reacted like this way. Andie’s life changed because she wouldn’t admit what she had done and she would hide her feelings. Andie should have told James everything about the accident and about her feelings, because things would be different if she had been honest and if she hadn’t broken James trust.
I read the book unlucky break by Kate Forster It's about an 18 year old girl called Andie Powers who lives in Melbourne Australia. Her last year of high school didn't go to well her mum Marlo had a very serious illness. That meant that Andie had to take care of her by doing the cooking, washing and driving her mum to and from doctors appointments she was basically doing everything she could to help. Unfortunately her mum ended up passing away and to top that all off her boyfriend cheated on her with her best friend! So when Andie got a call from her Hollywood star auntie Cece inviting her to come live with her in LA she decided to just take the opportunity and go with it.
When Andie arrives in LA her whole life gets flipped upside down. Andie in no longer struggling to make a living in Melbourne. She is probably living a lot of people's dream! She's living in a massive mansion with Aunt Cece, has an expensive car and has a new BFF called Jess. A lot of people would say this is an amazing life style but Andie can't help but think this place is fake filled with fake people. This is until she meets James Hawthorn the famous actor and instantly gets on well with him and from one mistake to another she ends up being an important person in his life.
A quote in this book that stood out to me was: 'be with someone because you like them as they are and make sure that person likes you for you. Life is to short to waste time trying to be someone you aren't' I like this quote because it's true life is to short to act like someone you aren't. You should always be your self no matter what because you are unique and special. If you be yourself then someone really amazing who you get on really well with could come into your life and they would like you for you and you would like them for them.
I liked the main character Andie because she is very different from the other characters. She is a really brave character who stays strong no matter how hard her life is and try's to make the best of every situation. Andie thinks she doesn't fit in, her clothes and personality are completely different to everyone else in L.A but later on she finds out that none of these things matter she's the only one that notices how different she is and it's actually good to be different.

I've read the Dutch version of this book, but I think the English title suits the book way better than the Dutch does.
Unlucky break is about the main character, Andie Powers, an Australian girl who loves to write all her emotions and thoughts down on paper because she had such a difficult life. After her mother's death she doesn't know where to go, and she ends up with her aunt Cece in LA. This will bring a whole new life to Andie where she isn't quite prepared for, with a new bff, Macbook, car and more!
Unlucky break contains some unexpected twists, with well-described scenes. The main character is described in a clear way, as well as the other characters in the book.
Certainly recommend this book to the ones who love to read about all the romance and fame in the life of movie stars :)
Rating 2.5 Although I've shelved this as realistic fiction, it was really anything but. I didn't mind the characters (although James was the only one I particularly liked), but I just found a lot of the plot developments really unrealistic. It was all just a bit too much of a coincidence a lot of the time, and that really detached me from the story. This book disappointing, but interesting enough of you like ya romance or racing books about actors.
I thought this book relied on too many clichés and Andie was quite annoying to read. Whilst the book was probably supposed to be a commentary on the 'fakeness' of Hollywood, it felt like she was probably the most vapid character in the book. It is a shame though, as the book did have some potential at first.
