Sam Bradford has it all—he’s the #2 tennis player in the world, plenty of girls want to date him, and he’ll never want for money. At least, that’s what he thought until his accountant stole everything and disappeared. Interpol has no idea where to start, and neither does the American F.B.I., so Sam figures he’ll just have to take care of his body and play a few extra years to make it back.
When Blair Paddington, the accountant’s daughter and a friend of a friend at Whitman, shows up and claims she can help Sam get his money back he’s torn between wanting justice and the very real possibility that Blair is just as big a con man as her father. When she promises not only money, but justice, Sam agrees—but only if he can go along on the search.
The two of them set off on an adventure neither rich kid is prepared for—cheap hostels, the same clothes three days in a row, and nothing but a backpack of possessions—so they can fly under the radar as college lovers on a winter break. In spite of Blair’s shady family, her daring and resourceful personality strike Sam’s interest and he finds himself falling for the one girl he shouldn’t.
When they finally find her father, the truths that come to light not only make Sam question his affection for Blair, but could cost him more than money—if they can’t work together one last time, neither of them may be going home. Ever.
I've been publishing New Adult romance novels for a little over a year, starting with Broken at Love and continuing with the rest of the Whitman University series. I adore telling stories, discovering the little reasons people fall in love, and uncovering hidden truths in the world around us – past and present.
In my spare time I cuddle my two dogs, pretend to enjoy exercising so that I can eat as much Chipotle as I want, and harbor a deep and abiding hope that Zac Efron likes older women. I loves reading, of course, along with movies, traveling, and Irish whiskey.
I'm hard at work, ALWAYS, and hope to bring you more Whitman University antics and at least one more Lowcountry ghost tale before the end of the year.

The plot seemed ambitious and promising. But it didn’t work for me. I was shaking my head, rolling my eyes, and laughing (not in a good way) throughout the entire length of the story. They’re like bunch of kids going into an exciting adventure in which they perceived it as something to be taken seriously, but could not act the part well. They seemed to be playing like FBI wannabe's while flirting and trying to up the steam factor which was so lame, by the way. And the hero’s pov was so obviously written by a female and that's not good. I had no problem with the writing style though. It’s the whole story that’s just not convincing enough for me…
I have enjoyed Lyla Payne's, Whitman University Series since I read, Broken At Love. One thing that I have noticed about all of the stories in this series, is that they each have a unique and interesting plot that hooks me, immediately. One of the characters usually deals with a huge moral/ethical dilemma, and I always find myself rooting for the main character to change and grow. I always enjoy seeing the journey that the main character takes, as well as the circumstances that are a catalyst for the changes made. I was introduced to Sam and Blaire in Be My Downfall. Sam is Quinn's good friend, and the second most successful professional tennis player in the world. Blaire, was Kennedy's room mate. As secondary characters, Sam came off as fun, easy going, and a womanizer. Blaire came off as cold, callous and was not a very likable character. However, I was really excited to read their story, because from the previous installment it was obvious how interested Sam was in Blaire, and he was persistent, even though she continually gave him the brush off.
Staying on Top, as well as all of the other installments in this series can be read as stand alone novels. However, it's fun to see how all the characters connect to one another. In this story, we learn Blaire's background. Her father is a notorious and wealthy con man that has had Blaire working with him as a co-conspirator since she was a young child. Blaire never really knows where he is because he's even secretive with her. We get a glimpse in to Blaire's double life early on as she pulls a con on a little old lady at the beginning of the story. Right away, I disliked Blaire as a character. She was ruthless, and didn't harbor any guilt when working cons. Sam is very well off, and has worked hard for his money. Then, he finds out that his accountant stole 30 million dollars from him, and he has no way of getting it back. Enter Blaire, her father knows Sam has even more money stashed away in private accounts, and has given her the task of getting access to his private account information. Blaire doesn't want to participate in this con, but she never refuses her father, and he encourages her to use anything she has in her con arsenal, even sleeping with Sam.
Blaire knows getting Sam to trust her is going to be difficult. Last spring, she continually turned him down when he kept texting, calling, and asking her out. She ends up locating Sam, and telling him that his accountant was her father, and that she can get him back his money. Thus, ensues a trip all around the world to locate her father. Along the way these two become friends, and share an undeniable chemistry, and embark on a crazy adventure. The beginning of the story felt a bit slow to me, and I had trouble with buying in to and "feeling" the connection between Blaire and Sam. It was obvious to me that Sam was crazy about Blaire, and I loved him as a character. He was such a good hearted guy. He was trusting, and his sexual play on words were hilarious! Yet, I had trouble buying in to Blaire's affections for Sam, and it frustrated me. It was hard to see her caring about anybody other than herself. Eventually, she underwent a huge amount of character growth, and I was proud to see how it all came about.
My Rating:
Overall, I enjoyed this story. My favorite aspect of the story was Sam's character. He made me laugh, swoon, and grin from ear to ear. I was intrigued to learn how con men worked, and the type of lifestyles they were used to living. Beautiful homes in various countries, and anything that money could by (even corrupt law officials), all at the expense of someone else. The various settings, as Blaire and Sam traveled all throughout Europe were fun to experience. The romance scenes were swoon-worthy, and the sex scenes were intense and sexy! I give, Staying On Top, by Lyla Payne 3.5 Intriguing, Adventurous, Sexy Sam Stars!
My Favorite Quotes:
"I'm not thinking about the next year, Sam. Hell, I'm not even thinking about next week. I'm just....ready to live in the moment. With you." (eARC, Loc. 2157)
~Blaire
"Now, being so happy with someone else, I worried losing him would make me feel like less than a whole. Like he had somehow become part of the puzzle that was me, and without him, pieces would be missing." (eARC, Loc. 2244)
I really liked this story, it was a different one that's for sure. And to be honest she could have just talk to her dad from the beginning instead of all that adventure. I would have like to know how it ended

Storyline had promise but I could not stand Blair. In my opinion Sam was too busy thinking with his penis to see the red flags. In my opinion neither Blair or Sam are likeable. I did find the suspense was there. It's just okay reading. I read in the Whitman University Boxed Set (Whitman University, #1-4).
I have to say that I love Lyla's Whitman University series. I read the last book in just a few hours. This one was no different! Her characters always have deeply rooted issues and some serious life conflict. Blair kind of takes the cake over them all though to this point...
Blair Paddignton is a marketing student at Whitman University. But she hides a secret deep that nobody knows, and can never know because it could end her up in prison. Blair's father is a competent lawyer who's been running con's on the rich and famous for years, pretending to be an accountant he gets them as a client and then takes their money all under an assumed alias of course. He resides mostly on a boat but has a residence in the Cayman Islands. Blair wants to be free of this life more then anything, but it isn't until her father steals from someone she really knows that thing take a turn for the better, and the worse...
Sam is a star tennis player ranked number two in the world. He is best friends with Quinn who is a Whitman student. During a spring break trip to St. Moritz he meets Blair Paddington, but she shoots him down and deflates his ego a bit, he was a little aggressive trying to bed this beauty... But he's never forgotten her. Even with the stream of women in and out of his bed, he could never really shake her from his mind. Their paths cross once again when he has 30 million dollars stolen from his bank accounts. Little does he know that the beauty from his past will be his ally in getting his money back. But things aren't always what they seem...
Sam and Blair have an attraction that can't be denied and their whirlwind trip across the world in search of her father and his money unleashes the feelings that they both hide from each other. But a series of unfortunate events and the truth stand between them... They get into some serious situations along this journey, some you won't believe and will make you laugh and cry at the same time... They travel to some amazing parts of the world that I could only hope to see one day... The unfortunate situation is that Blair wants to be loved, but she can't let anyone into her life for fear of them knowing who and what she really is. And even though she's done some unthinkable things I truly felt heartbroken for her at times. I wanted her to truly find the peace she so desired and not have to look over her shoulder and worry about being caught all the time.
This isn't like the other stories in the Whitman series, it takes place completely away from college life. Lyla's books always intrigue me and keep me entertained. This twisted up tale is unlike any I've read in the past. Her witty characters and charming hot men will keep you on your toes and asking for more.... I'm already awaiting the next book read to find out what is going on with the next set of Whitman characters! I give Staying on Top 4 stars. It's a solid read and a good story I think everyone will enjoy!
Staying On Top was my introduction to Lyla Payne and I will definitely be reading more of her books in the future! She put a fresh spin on the deceit trope, and added in a hilarious couple to boot. Sam and Blair are polar opposites that find solace with each other. Blair is tough, and hard-hearted, where Sam is sweet and open. Their bickering and chemistry sucked me in from the get-go and never let up. I was all set to read another college based new adult novel, and got a fun-filled globe-trotting adventure instead!
"For the first time in maybe my entire life, it felt okay to sit next to someone and not worry that they would hear a million confessions in the silence." ~Blair
Blair and Same set out on an adventure to get Sam's money back. Money that was stolen by Blair's father. So, you can imagine Sam's hesitance to accept Blair's help in this endeavor. Nonetheless, the two begin searching high and low for her father and get into some pretty tight spots along the way. While Blair has her own motives at the beginning of their trip, they quickly become null and void as Sam worms his way into her heart. Sam, is definitely a charmer. From the minute they started traveling he has been the King on Innuendos and pervy yet, hilarious, commentary. I was chuckling throughout the entire book. Between the banter from Blair and Sam to the rough trail they follow there was never a dull moment.
"But as stupid as it sounds, I've never felt this way about anyone- like nothing would be real if I couldn't tell you about it. Don't give up before we give it a try." ~Sam
It all comes to head though, when secrets are revealed and Blair must make decisions about her future. I totally adore sweet, and charming male leads but, I think Blair might be my favorite character in Staying On Top. She has always had to be so strong, and it has turned her somewhat bitter. That all changes with Sam, and she finally finds a backbone where her one weakness is concerned. Overall, Staying On Top is an enjoyable read. It was fun, steamy, and hilarious. It was refreshing to read a light-hearted, and light on the angst book. Sometimes I get so deep into the angst, I need a breather and this was just the book to give me a entertaining and delightful reprieve. Would I recommend it? Absolutely! I definitely added all three predecessors to my TBR list and can't wait to read all about the other couples' stories :)
Happy Reading! *ARC provided by the author/publisher in exchange for an honest review*
Sam and Blair first met when they were on holiday in St.Moritz with friends. Sam showed his interest in Blair but Blair turned him down, not wanting to hook up with a guy who gets every girl he wants, and too afraid to get closer to people and actually having to trust them.
“She reminded me of an animal in the woods, one trying to decide whether or not to take the carrot out of my hand. Scaring her away was the last thing I wanted.”
When they meet again Blair tries her best to ignore her growing feelings for Sam, his charm and him trying to make her see how good things could be if she would just let it happen. They are on a mission: getting Sam's money back; at least that's what Sam thinks is the plan. But for Blair it's way more than that.
“And there was no doubt I would lose him. The only question was when.”
After her mother died, it's always been Blair and her father, or just Blair. Her father's been gone most of the time, wanted by Interpol and the FBI for stealing rich people's money. But how much does Blair know about Sam's stolen money when she comes to him to team up with him to track down her father? That's what Sam tries to find out while slowly falling for the only girl he probably shouldn't fall for.
“You're really pretty when you smile. For a devil.”
Sam is not the typical rich bad boy, the manwhore known for his way of fucking around. Sure, he had his fair share of women but I like the side of him we get to know in Staying On Top. I like how different the story is, compared to the other Whitman University books (which I also highly recommend). I'm not the biggest fan of book series but this is one of the best I've ever read. I love the characters, how they all have their life outside of university.
Lyla Payne told Sam's and Blair's story in a great way. During their road trip we get to know both of them, how they discover their feelings, how they try to hide them and how they fight them. It's told in a gorgeous way of two people getting to know each other, trying to be friends when they know there's more than that. Their feelings develop slower than most of the NA loves in books and it's so much better, I think. It creates an anticipation and excitement, and I loved every page of this book. I couldn't put it down and love Lyla's writing style. She's an inspiration for my own writing and that's what makes books special for me. This one is special and I highly recommend it.
As a fan of Lyla Payne’s Whitman University series, I’ve been anticipating the pairing of Sam Bradford and Blair Paddington, who were introduced as minor characters in earlier books. Unlike the other books in the series, Staying on Top strays away from the Whitman University campus, following the road trip trope as Sam and Blair travel the world looking for answers. I've read many books where one character was keeping a secret from another and this story evokes a similar feeling of anxiety. It's inevitable that the secret will be revealed at some point and, until that time, there's a dark cloud hovering over every interaction, putting an expiration date on their newfound relationship.
My favorite part of the book was getting to know Sam better, learning all his little quirks that made him special and endeared me to him. From his portrayal in previous books, I knew Sam was charming and a bit of a player, but I assumed his charm would be of the slick, womanizing, says-all-of-the-right-things variety. Maybe this is the case for the average tennis groupie, but around Blair, a less assured, more laid-back side emerged. Sam’s cheerful persona is contrasted against Blair’s cynical nature, providing a balance where the two meet in the middle.
As much as I loved Sam, I was more cautious towards my judgment of Blair. Knowing what kind of secrets were in Blair's past and present made me wary of her intentions toward Sam and, although I may not have been her biggest fan at the start of the book, her character grew on me. She didn't open up easily, instead making Sam (and me, as a reader) work to get to know her. I liked the fact that despite Blair's ability to conceal her thoughts, Sam was the one person with the ability to unveil them.
What I love about this series is that nothing is ever usually what it seems. Whitman University is a school for wealthy and privileged students, yet there always seems to be a hidden story with each character. Appearances are deceiving, and, it isn't until we delve deeper into their minds that their true characters are revealed. Lyla Payne breaks through the surface of each protagonist, making them more relatable by exposing their hidden desires and vulnerabilities. Each book in the series has disproved any preconceived notions I may have had about the characters and Staying on Top is no exception.
With each book I become a bigger fan of Lyla Payne. I like that all the characters are connected but each book has it's own storyline.
This one features Blair and Sam. Blair is a college student who appears to live the typical college student life, but what her friends don't know... She has a secret life. It's one where she cons rich people out of money for her father, who does it for a living.
Sam is a tennis star. He recently had $30 million dollars of his money stole. By his accountant who is a fake and you later learn is Blair's dad.
Sam has had a crush on Blair since they met in St. Moritz in Be My Downfall. Blair is like the one that got away for Sam, she turned him down. So he's quite surprised when Blair shows up at his hotel in Melbourne telling him that she knows her dad stole his money and wants to help him get it back. What Sam doesn't know is Blair is there to pull a con, to get the rest of sam's account information so her dad can steal the rest of his money. So Blair takes Sam on this wild adventure to find her dad, even though she knows exactly where he is.
What Blair didn't count on through her con, falling for Sam. She realizes he is more that a pretty boy, manwhore tennis star. Blair starts to feel guilty and a war goes on her head the longer the journey takes.
I loved their relationship. I liked the back and forth banter, I liked that Sam saw through her and showed her people really do care for her. It was great to see Blair realize she can have what she wants sooner rather than later.
One of the issues I had was Audra Stuart's part in this story. Blair talks about having a problem with Audra's boyfriend, getting a bad vibe from the guy in the beginning if the book. It's brought up again towards the end when she gets another cell phone. Then when she gets back to Whitman Audra's side of the bedroom looks nearly deserted. Blair gets cryptic text messages from a fellow friend and Audra's brother but you never find out what happened to her. It feels unresolved especially since Lyla Payne says she's gonna take a break from this series. I really want to know what happens.
Staying on Top is the fourth book in the Whitman University series, and follows Sam, who we met briefly in the first book, and Blair, who was introduced in book two. They briefly met each other in book three, and despite Sam’s best attempts, Blair continually turned him down.
Blair has a secret—her father is a con artist, and she is his often-unwilling accomplice. Sam, while competing abroad, finds his accountant has just stolen a huge chunk of his money…$30 million huge. Once Blair’s father contacts her to step in and swindle Sam for the rest of his earnings, she sets out to find Sam in Australia. The two strike up an agreement and embark on a search for her father in which Sam believes will result in recovering his missing funds.
I really loved the dynamic between Sam and Blair. I could feel immediately the tension between them, and even though Blair tried to fight it, you just know she is going to cave eventually. They are stuck together in some very precarious situations, after all.
Sam was sexy, cocky in an unassuming way, and I loved the way he courted Blair, even when she shot him down repeatedly. But Blair’s indifference kept her from being as likeable as I needed. But once they connected, I felt a lot more for her, I especially loved the scene in the fishing boat. This book flowed quite nicely until the last couple of chapters. I felt it ended rather abruptly, and though we do have closure, I was left wondering if we will see more of these two in books to come. I hope so. I am genuinely interested in seeing where their “relationship” goes after everything they went through together.
While my favorite in this series is still Broken at Love, I have really enjoyed every installment thus far and liked Staying on Top just as much. I recommend it as well as the rest of the series, if you are ever in need of a good, quick love story.
I am so in love with this latest installment from Lyla Payne and her Whitman University series! She has taken us away from campus to a fast paced European adventure that is unlike anything out there right now. The romance is a sweet slow burn, the action and tension is intense and the story is brilliant.
Each WU book is a stand alone, but this one more than any other is one you can pick up and enjoy without having read the rest of the series. That being said, this is my favorite series out right now (yeah, I said it!) so I think you are really missing out if you don’t read the rest of them.
Sam, our tennis pro hero is a total sweetheart that is much deeper and warm-hearted than his playboy exterior lets on. He has been fleeced by his accountant for a lot (a loooot) of money, but that’s not enough for our money cruncher villain – he wants it all. That’s when our beautiful and complex heroine Blair comes in. I don’t want to give away anything so I will leave it at that, but trust me - she’s unlike anyone you’ve seen in a book or movie in a long time.
So often romances either feature desperate sweet ninnies or “hard-to-get” written really more as just “bitchy.” Not with Lyla, she writes tricky, tough girls that you can't help but like. Blair is tough and frustrating at times but it always feels authentic, especially when we learn her backstory.
Everything about Staying on Top is fun and unique and I just wish it were a movie because the brilliant imagery and lovely storytelling is so perfect I would love more ☺
The premise of this book grabbed my attention more than just because it was part of a series I have been enjoying since I began reading it. I had a pretty good idea where the storyline would go, but I didn't care one bit. I liked Sam in the previous novel and I was interested to see how he would hold up in a book of his own. I wasn't disappointed. Sam had pretty much everything I look for in a main male character: questionable past with the ladies, a willingness to change and LOADS of sex appeal. Blair was interesting in her own right. It was easy to see how conflicted she was about what she was doing. The chemistry between Sam and Blair was undeniable.
I'm sucker for a happy ending, but I like my stories with a little conflict, too. I feel there could have been more of the latter in this book. I mean, after all, Blair was pulling a pretty big con on Sam. I think that aspect could have been focused on more.
All in all, I really enjoyed this book. Sam and Blair's adventure was right up my alley. I enjoyed them as a team and as a couple. Staying on Top had a great mix of sweet, sexy and funny moments. I hope this isn't the end of the Whitman University series. I've really enjoyed my time with these characters and hope to continue it.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
So I've been reading this series from the start and I just can't get enough. I'm always glad to escape into the lives of Whitman's oh so very intriguing students. Blair has one secret in particular that might top the rest. Secrets don't stay hidden long.
Everything seemed to be perfectly normal in Sam's life. That is until he realizes that his accountant has stolen 30 million dollars from him. That is where Blair Paddington comes in. She was the girl he couldn't keep his mind off of. She's also his accountant’s daughter. Low and behold, she shows up and claims to be able to get his money back while also promising to turn in her father. Life's full of choices, will these two pick the same route?
I really like the fact that Blair was up front with Sam from the start. Yes, there are others secrets but at least the main thing was out in the open. It was a unique twist and a refreshing new story. Their relationship is the one that really grabbed my attention. You can instantly feel the chemistry between them, even when their stuck in the oddest of places. Staying On Top is a great addition to the Whitman series. It's also a fun quick read that takes you to different parts of the world without having to take out your passport and jumping on an 18 hour flight.
Staying on Top is my favorite book from Lyla Payne, and I wasn't sure that my favorite couple, Cole and Ruby, could be dethroned - but Blair and Sam have taken that spot! I loved that Lyla went in a different direction with this book, and that the story wasn't something you've read before. It has adventure, angst and sexual tension, which has set the stage for another good book in the Whitman University series.
Sam Bradford is the #2 tennis player in the world, and after his shady accountant swindles him out of a large sum of money, Sam has a decision to make. Fortunately (or unfortunately), Blair Paddington shows up 'just in time' to help Sam, and despite the alarm bells going off in his head about her timely arrival, he accepts her offer to help him get his money back.
What ensues is a wild goose chase across Europe, which is all part of Blairs plan, until the inevitable happens and she finds herself questioning who she is, and why exactly she's willing to betray Sam's trust.
This was an exciting read, and the quirky banter between Sam and Blair adds humor to their situations. Their sexual tension is addictive, and you'll be screaming "Just get it on already!" half way through! I think Lyla did an amazing job with this book, and as much as I hate to replace Cole and Ruby as my favorite Whitman University couple, the relationship between Sam and Blair, as well as their surprising circumstances, made this Lyla's best book to date :)
Blair Paddington. How is it possible to hate and love a character both in the same breath? Blair isn't your typical rich girl sorority sister. She wasn't raised in a typical lifestyle. She's been alone since her mothet died and forced into a lifestyle of epic proportions.
Sam Bradford is one sexy, devilishly charming pro tennis player with a knack for saying all the right things. I wouldn't mind learning a thing or two about tennis from that pro.
Sam met Blair on a trip with some friends in the last book and hasn't been able to get her out of his head. She made it clear she wasn't interested. After Sam is conned out of millions of his hard earned money, Blair suspiciously shows up claiming her father conned him and that she wants to help him recover his missing funds. They set out on an adventure in foreign land braving hostels, buses, and lunges into ice cold rivers.
What will the truth of this adventure reveal? Will Sam break down walls Blair has reinforced her entire life? Will he win the girl and recover his funds or will he lose everything in the process, including Blair?
Lyla Payne has done it again. You can't go wrong with this must read installment of the Whitman series. I didn't think it was possible for her to continue to indulge my need for a sexy and charming book boyfriend after Toby, but I was wrong.
This installment of the Whitman University series is very different from the other in that very little of it actually takes place at Whitman. Instead, Sam and Blair are dashing around together to exotic locales on the hunt for Blair's father who has swindled the handsome tennis player out of thirty million dollars. Along the way there are laughs, near death experiences and some pretty hot stuff too.
The book is non-stop action and kept me glued to the page. I loved hearing part of the story from Sam's POV since he is a character that has intrigued me since the first book and man whore(ish) he may be, it was nice to see his softer side. Blair has always been a bit uppity and this book really delves into why she's held herself so far apart from the other Whitman students. Together, they have some great banter that infuses the story with a slowly growing tension that really enhances their relationship. Both a little damaged and wary, they definitely don't rush into bed together and they both fight their feelings for most of the book.
I'd recommend this book for fans of cute and funny romance with lots of action.
**I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review
This is Sam & Blair's Story. This is only my second Whitman University Book, I came late to them, loved the other one I read, Be My Downfall, and as you can see.....I freaking loved this one too!
What a Story! Not only did I have the romantic, will they, won't they? going on in my head, and that was some Sexual Tension I can tell you.... but it was filled with the intrigue of this Girl helping her Dad with this massive Con!
I hated Blair at first, she helped her Dad steal $30 off Sam and now she was going on a wild goose chase....but with intent to steal more. Poor trusting Sam...
But, after a while Blair isn't the B*tch Con artist i thought and with such a spark between them and all the time spent together they really start to connect and I had an amazing time seing Sam break down Blair's walls piece by piece to show her that people care and she doesn't have to be alone....but when the truth comes out, Blair knows she is going to regret letting Sam in.
Oh...I loved my mini break, travelling with them. Bed Bugs and all ;-)
Blair's father has an iron grip on her. He'll use whatever he can to get her to do what he wants, which is one good reason she can't afford real friends or any kind of happiness; he'd just take it away. A few more years... that's all she needs to survive in order to be free of him. But when her father orders her to finish a job involving Sam, (Quinn's friend, and the guy she turned down again and again despite an obvious connection between them) she'll have to get creative.
The more she gets to know Sam the more she hates herself for what she's doing to him, and the more her feelings for him turn in to something real. If she finishes the job she'll lose him forever and everyone at Whitman will know who she really is, but if she doesn't it will destroy her future and possibly land her in prison.
There is more at stake here than broken hearts for both Sam and Blair. This book will keep you on the edge of your seat waiting to see it they give in, and what it will mean if they do. The tension is delicious, and the banter gives it a perfect balance.
I don't know how she does it, but every book in the WU series is even better than the last!
~~~I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review~~~ There are 5 very bright stars that I have given this book. I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN AT ALL!!! Blair is a student at Whitman University. And Sam is a tennis pro on the Pro circuit. They met in St. Moritz while on break from school. Sam wanted her and Blair wanted nothing to do with him-at all. That all changed when Blair's dad scams Sam out of all of his money. Blair has to go in to get the rest of Sams info for her dad so he can continue to take all of his money. Sam doesn't suspect a thing-or does he?
Lyla writes with her heart. She spends time with each of her characters so she knows how they think and what they would do and say. You can tell that she doesn't like it when she has to either go their own ways or be with someone that they shouldn't be with.
I love Lyla's books! She has yet to fail me in this department! She has a reader for life!
I really enjoyed this book, it has been a while since I have dived into the Whitman University universe and I did miss it. I am a die-hard Whitman Hooter for life! Where shall I begin…oh yes, lets start with Blair. She is a mystery, one I could never figure out until you are truly inside her head. I feel sorry for her and want to slap her all at the same time. Then there is sweet, sexy, swoon-worthy Sam Bradford. The man is 100% perfection, care-free, happiness. I love Sam and I can now completely understand why Quinn and him are good friends.
They go on this crazy adventure in an attempt to get Sam’s money back and along the way Blair starts to share pieces of herself. Things that slip out in moments of honesty that she has trouble keeping her story and lies straight. Overall, it is just and enjoyable read, something that is funny but not too heavy or dark but will leave you smiling and gasping at every page. Lyla never disappoints on Whitman!
I was intrigued about both Sam and Blair ever since I first read about them and I hoped that the next book would be about them and I was glad when I found out that it was. This book is a real adventure, even though it is a very serious matter, their trip was really fun to read. Even with all the lies and hiding, these two are meant for each other and I am glad that they finally see it. I was proud of Blair at the end, when she stood up to her father, and I was proud of Sam for his ability to forgive. I loved that the author took them on a trip across Slovenia, Croatia and Serbia but I didnt like how the people were described, like we here are so far away from civilization.
“Staying on Top” is a fantastic European road trip romp, in this fourth installment of the New Adult genre Whitman University series. Sam Bradford is the #2 tennis player in the world and is friends with a former ex-star and current Whitman University student. He thinks he has it all until he finds out that his accountant has disappeared with most of the millions of dollars he has won on the tennis circuit. Blair Paddington is currently attending Whitman, and her father was Sam’s accountant, so she goes to him and tells him she can help him get his money back.
This novel is from my personal bookshelf, so it is a honest review.
I have read all of the previous books in the Whitman University series so I was looking forward to reading about Sam and Blair. Staying on Top isn't set on campus like the previous books, as this one is more adventurous. Blair is one character I truly have a love/hate relationship with.
The previous books in the series do not need to be read prior to reading Staying on Top since Blair and Sam were simply minor characters in those. As with the other books though, this one is also well-written and full of romance! Staying on Top does add two new elements to the Whitman University series and those are suspense and adventure and they are great additions!!!
MY RATING: 3.5
DISCLAIMER: I received a complimentary copy of Staying on Top in exchange for an honest review.
This book was a good addition to what has been a good series but it was nowhere near as good as the previous book "Be My Downfall." I think taking the story away from Whitman University and all the other characters that we have come to love was a huge mistake. I really struggled to like Blair and Sam. Blair wasn't the most admirable character and Sam, well I kept waiting for him to find his balls (pretty sure Blair had full control of them). The story did pick up towards the end but by then the damage had been done. The most interesting part of this story to me was Audra and I am curious to know what is going on there.
3.5ish stars. It was good, it was light, it was funny and it was different. It was not the best in the series...that still goes to 'Be My Downfall' and it wasn't the worst because Sam is not douchey at all. But after the heavy material in the last book, this was almost too light. Yes, there are still ethical issues and morals at stake, but it just isn't the same level. I was expecting a little more meat. That being said, I loved the play between Blair and Sam, the adventure was cute and the outcome was a breath of sweet, fresh air.
To be honest, this is time i felt less attachment. The romance would have been awesome without the whole heist-society kinda plot that took away part of my enjoyment. I liked how this was less dark than previous books but idk this con-artist thing could have been better. I LOVED the witty lines. They made for an amazing bickering moments such as Blair's "i am the man in the relationship, so you know i hate mushy" LOL! I don't usually remember lines but this book was filled with good ones.
I think I have said this about every one of these - but seriously, this time it is my favorite (I know every time I read one it becomes my favorite, but moving on....). I love Blair and her stubbornness, do it on her own terms attitude, and I think her and Sam's goody-two-shoes personality mesh so well. The writing, as always, is flawless and has you feeling like you are traipsing around continents with them. But it is about more than love,it is about finding the good in yourself, learning to do what is right, forgiveness of yourself and others, and that your actions affect others.
I thought about this all night after reading this book I love this series! And although the story started out a little jumpy at the begining it started getting kinda good in the middle and finished pretty good I liked the ending. So you have to keep reading to get to the good parts don't give up on this book if you haven't read the other Whitman University books you need to before you attempt this one.
Staying on Top was another Whitman University hit by the fantastic Lyla Payne! Blair and Sam were the perfect mix of salty and sweet. A true balance and honestly one of the best reads that truly exemplify what balance in a relationship is. Reading Sam and Blair was like watching the molding of a true yin and yang. Lyla does a fantastic job at painting the full picture of their journey together. It’s a must read for any romance lover! You won’t regret it!
