Her friends warn her not to go to Brendan Fear's birthday party at his family's estate on mysterious Fear Island. But Rachel Martin has a crush on Brendan and is excited to be invited. Brendan has a lot of party games planned. But one game no one planned intrudes on his party—the game of murder. As the guests start dying one by one, Rachel realizes to her horror that she and the other teenagers are trapped on the tiny island with someone who may want to kill them all. How to escape this deadly game? Rachel doesn't know whom she can trust. She should have realized that nothing is as it seems… on Fear Island.

THIS REVIEW WAS INSPIRED BY THE TROLL WHO TOLD ME THAT USING TOO MANY GIFS MAKES ME APPEAR CHILDISH AND I SHOULDN’T BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY. THE FOLLOWING SHOULD CONFIRM THAT I AM INDEED CHILDISH AND NO ONE SHOULD TAKE ME SERIOUSLY.
I know that out there somewhere there is someone screaming at their computer “HOW DARE YOU GIVE R.L. STEIN A 1 STAR RATING. HOW COULD YOU?!?!?!?!?!” Well, I’ll tell you – it was actually pretty easy being as the book was terrible. I picked this up over Halloween week thinking it would be fun to read a blast from the past. Sadly I was wrong. Now I know you’re thinking I didn’t like it because I’m too old, but I'll tell you what - I read way more than my fair share of YA books and tend to enjoy them. You know what the problem was with this particular selection????? It’s due to something I like to call “the cheese factor”.
The idea behind Party Games was a good one … Rachel (the not-so-popular girl) has had an eternal crush on Brandon (the ever-so-popular boy). When Rachel gets invited to Brandon’s birthday party at his family’s vacation home on nearby Fear Island she is sooooooo in. That is, until guests start dropping like flies and the partygoers find themselves trapped on an island with a murderer.
I was hoping Party Games would be a younger version of Harper’s Island or maybe a less gruesome version of April Fool’s Day (obviously I only watch award-winning movies). What I got instead?
Yep, full on cheese in a can. There was so much cheese in this story I was afraid I would develop a problem like my former buddy Chester . . .
Luckily I was able to finish Party Games before it was too late. Not only was this book cheesy, but it had an awful juvenile writing style to boot. I realize this was a YA selection, but the story was sooooo dumbed-down it was almost insulting. The plot was also completely predictable (again, just because your audience is young, it doesn’t mean they are stupid).
It needs to be noted that my house is FULL of R.L. Stine books. I thought my kids would love the Goosebumps stories and bought them all. It turns out neither of them are fans either. When I finished Party Games I asked why they didn’t like Stine’s books and the answer was:
What the fuck was this???? R.L. I love you but what-the-fuck?? This was just... terrible.
It's funny how no one is pointing this out but "Party Games" is pretty much a rip-off of the 1986 horror film "April Fool's Day". The only thing that sets both apart is the ending of Party Games which I feel came out of nowhere and was probably written last minute to avoid comparisons to other books/movies. Also on the copyright page it says Copyright 2014 by Parachute Publishing NOT R.L. Stine. So it is a packaged book which means it wasn't fully R.L.'s idea. But still it's a freaking rip-off and I am one disappointed reader.
I think I will be sticking with Stine's old books for now on.
I'll be talking more about this in my November Wrap-up video.
Here's the thing. Reading R.L. Stine is in some ways comforting. Odd thing to say about a horror writer but I believe it's true. Stine follows a familiar pattern and when you want something predictable in some ways but suspenseful he's a good author to read.
I am no expert in all things Stine. I've read him but not extensively. Some of his works are genuinely eerie. Some are good. And some just don't work for me. Party Games was one such book.
This is a tough one to speak about without spoilers. Basically, the book is about a high school girl -- Rachel. She works in a busy eatery taking orders for cheeseburgers and day dreaming about Brendan -- Brendan Fear.
Anyone who has read Stine knows about the Fears -- and their history.
So when this lad invites Rachel to an all-night party at his dad's home on a remote island -- she is thrilled.
But maybe she shouldn't have been. Maybe she should have run like the wind.
That is really all I can say about the plot without giving away key plot-points. Here's the thing -- the characters were fine, the setting was in fact eerie and there was suspense. But it didn't grab me.
This is because, for me, it was the wrong type of suspense. I like slow and deepening psychological horror. I like a sense of deepening dread. I just do not like plot twists on every new chapter that make no sense.
And there were mountains of them. This isn't the sort of thing that grabs me and it isn't a devise that appears in every Stine book.
But it appeared here. Endless chase sequences. Endless times for the damsel to be in distress. That's just not my thing. There isn't anything wrong with this book but it was the wrong selection for me.
Who would like this?
I feel fans of slasher films -- fans of the things I mentioned above. People who adore a huge amount of twists would undoubtedly revel in this book and get lost within its pages. It IS creepy and before I forget -- dead animals feature in this and that is another thing that turned me off.
So, really this was a quick read that I read in one sitting but felt let down with as I finished. Not my type of book and very unrealistic though I see its appeal. I have enjoyed other books by this author more.
I'll begin by saying that like everyone who's chosen to read the renewed Fear Street novels, I am a huge fan of R.L. Stine and have grown up reading his books, which is why I bought this book with barely suppressed excitement. I thought I would be able to delve into this amazing thriller that would take me back to my teenage years where I used to stay up late at night under my bedcovers reading these books.
Unfortunately, I cannot say that I was the least bit enthralled. It wasn't the writing - I actually didn't mind that at all. I thought his writing really captured the essence of his older books, in that it hasn't changed at all. What bothered me was the storyline itself. This was not what I expected it to be at all. The characters were some of the lamest and most boring characters ever, especially the protagonist herself, Rachel.
So, Rachel, out of the blue, is invited to Brendan Fear's overnight birthday party by none other than Brendan himself. Having never been friends with him, nor is she part of his social circle, the only other explanation she can think of is that Brendan is "into her". I found that ridiculous, he suddenly decided he was into her right as he was inviting people to his birthday party? Ok. Fine. I'll let that one pass. Moving on.
Her best friend Amy. Reasonable, loyal, Amy. Amy, the best friend, whom Rachel herself admits is ALWAYS right, warns her not to go to Brendan Fear's birthday party. Warns her that bad things happen on that island. Rachel however, decides not to listen to her best friend because well, she has the hots for Brendan, so she would rather risk her life for a fleeting romance than listen to her best friend. Again, I'll let it go. We were all teenagers once, and we know how important these social opportunities are, especially if the boy you're crushing on is the centre of it.
Then, Rachel finds a dead rat in her bed. Very Godfather-like. She assumes it's from her creepy ex-boyfriend. So when her creepy ex-boyfriend corners her the next day and warns her not to go to Brendan's birthday party, she assumes he's jealous and tells him off for his dead rat trick. To which he is surprised and swears he had nothing to do with it. Well, who are we going to believe? Creepy ex-boyfriend cornering the girl in an abandoned parking lot? Hell, no. So we're on Rachel's side on this one.
We get to the actual birthday now. They arrive at the island and their only boat driver slips, hits his head and falls into the water with blood seeping everywhere. They assume he's dead, but the staff reassure them "he'll be ok". It only takes them about 5 minutes to get over the whole thing. Very compassionate bunch these teenagers. In their rooms, Rachel is with two other girls who both discuss the dead animals found in their beds the previous night - whoops, sorry creepy ex-boyfriend - so now we know someone involved in this party is behind it, and yet...no one seems to panic or want to leave the party. Then, Brendan announces the party games are about to commence, the first one being a classic scavenger hunt around this haunted house. They break up into pairs, with Brendan obviously pairing up with Rachel, and the first death occurs. Everyone freaks out, everyone wants to get off the island, but oh wait! The boat driver is out of commission! So they're stuck on the island trying to figure out who could have killed their friend. Then another death occurs, and another - until we reach our climax, in which Brendan reveals that he was behind it all, and no one is actually dead and this was all part of his grand plan to scare everyone to death (including putting the dead animals in their beds). Very nice Brendan. You're obviously a real classy guy.
But WAIT. It gets even MORE interesting. Two armed men walk in and take Brendan and Rachel hostage, and it has nothing to do with the birthday plans this time. These men want a heavy ransom from Brendan's dad to pay him back for firing them. So another completely bizarre series of events ensue, in which they are running for their lives in the woods, and the creepy ex-boyfriend makes another appearance and is somehow involved, and them some fake cops show up and all is well that end's well.
Except, here is the part that REALLY bothered me. After all of this, the twisted party games that Brendan came up, almost getting killed and the nightmares that Rachel had to live through and what do you know? She still came out of this with Brendan as her boyfriend. I mean, is this girl insane or what? And listen to this beautiful ending: she forgets her favorite jacket in the mansion, so instead of asking Brendan to arrange to get it back to her somehow, she asks him if they could GO back there so she can find it. REALLY? That same haunted house in that same deserted island in which you almost DIED? You want to go back there YOURSELF to get a stupid jacket? Oh my Lord, give me a break. She is definitely out of her mind.
Rachel must be one of the worst female protagonists. Not only is she a horrible judge of character, but she makes the worst decisions ever!
I loved the Fear Street books as a teen and I did enjoy the blast of nostalgia. I do think this was cheesier than I remember the Fear Street books being (this was more Goosebumps level cheesy). I am glad to see the series is being rebooted and hope that the Netflix mini series can help steer it back into a genuinely creepy direction. Nostalgia was almost enough for 4 stars, but the very end of the book and how relationships shake out left me beyond frustrated. Rachel is one of the weaker heroines I’ve ever read. This is the second Fear Street relaunch that I’ve read and I hope they get better from here.
This book has a lot of common horror tropes. Unpopular, poor, Rachel is invited by her crush, the popular and rich Brendan Fear, to his birthday party on his family’s summer home on an isolated island. Clearly nothing bad can happen here. Even before she makes it to the island she is creeped out by a dead rat in her bed. I did find the plot pretty predictable but that was ok. Once they get to the island and the party everything goes wrong including party guests turning up dead.
...so here I was, just browsing NetGalley, and here I see an R.L STINE novel. And I'm like what?! And then I see it is a FREAKING FEAR STREET NOVEL and I'm like what, whaaaaat?! REQUEST REQUEST REQUEST!!! And the galley gods smiled at me and said, let there be Party Games: A Fear Street Novel. Amen.
Five stars for nostalgia's sake, I say. FIVE STARS.
It was SO FUN to return to Fear Street after all these years. R.L. Stine scared the CRAP out of me when I was younger with his Fear Street trilogy (or whatever it was) dealing with the Fear family backstory. I don't remember TOO much about the Fears - other than witchcraft, burning mansions, woods... and BEING SCARED OUT OF MY MIND by these books as a preteen/teenager. I had to read this, and now that I have, I just might take a return visit to Fear Street and reread the books of my past. Because R.L. Stine is nothing if not a good, suspenseful, twisty-turny time.
For some reason(maybe because the book is set on an island or involves the systematic reduction of said island's inhabitants), I drew a comparison to this book and And Then There Were None. Our heroine, Rachel, a gal next-door trying to do good by her parents while romancing the dark-and-distant wealthy heir at the same time she is trying to escape from her possessive ex-boyfriend, scores an invitation to an exclusive party on Fear Island. There, she has been invited to celebrate the 18th birthday of Brendan Fear, her aforementioned crush and wealthy heir to the Fear family fortune. But has Brendan also inherited the Fear family curse? Will Rachel be able to win her heartthrob's attention - while escaping the island alive?
Coming soon to your street September 30th. Honest, it's just as fun as you remember!
I was really excited to read this book. It's R.L. Stine, who I usually love. It's about a bunch of kids that go to a secluded island to celebrate one of their friends' brithday and then things go wrong. People start dying as the party games turn deadly and they are trapped in the island with no way out.
This book had a great premise and even though the beginning was a huge introduction a big cast of characters that I never really managed to remember completely, once the party started things were looking up. People started dropping dead and I was starting to get excited (That sounds kind of sick, but this is what you expect from R.L. Stine books). Anyways, the party game wasn't what I (or any of the characters) thought. It turned out to be a complete let down, which would have been a great twist if something remotely interesting happened after it but things just got a bit boring for me.
Since this is an R.L. Stine book, there is no great character development and that wouldn't have bothered me if the story was good, but it wasn't. So, this was kind of a disappointment for me. People were doing things that made no sense, the story turned from a deadly mystery to a boring case.
A final note on the audiobook: I really enjoyed the narrator. She did a pretty good job and I would love to listen to more books by her.
Ο Stine δεν είναι Stephen King, Dean Koontz ή Graham Masterton.
I can't say for sure exactly how cheesy those books were since it's been so long since I've read them, but I'm guessing they were pretty effing cheesy. So many 90s books were, and that's part of what makes them so amazing (and so awful). And no pretty cover can come close to the awesomeness of 90s book covers, I DON'T CARE WHAT ANYONE SAYS.
Anyway, my point is Party Games was SO CHEESY. SO BAD. It tried so hard to be modern but it just didn't work. The dialogue was so stilted. Like, contractions are your friend (I don't think that's the first time I've said that in a review, come to think of it). Both the dialogue and descriptions were repetitive.
It was an enjoyable read for the nostalgia factor, but I can't see teens today seriously getting into Party Games, what with all the other YA offerings out there. Unless they're the kind of teens who are into B horror movies, in which case, this might be right up their alley.
No judgements. My kid is hosting a Halloween scavenger hunt for his book club, so I had to read this to set up the clues. Actually, I listened to it (so bad) and begged hubby Joe to stab me in the ears this morning. Our offspring OWES me big time. >.<
Okay. I bumped it to a five. My boy is going to a writing event for kids tomorrow, and he gets to meet R.L. Stine. That's worth five right there!
Fear Street is one of my favorite book series of my childhood and this delivers! Completely in the R.L.Stine/Fear Street voice, Shadyside comes back to life...and death. You are kept on your toes as you aren't quite sure who the "bad guy(s)" is or what is real or just... a game.
“Someone is definitely playing games with us,” Geena said. “Only…” Her voice broke. “Murder isn’t a game.”
17-year-old Rachel Martin is ecstatic when her crush Brendan Fear invites her to his birthday party that he’s having on Fear Island. (She’s so ecstatic she doesn’t even let the issue of finding a dead animal between her sheets stop her!) The group of kids invited to the party take a boat to the island and problems start as soon as they arrive. Party Games is actually the first of six books Stine is planning as a new addition to his popular Fear Street series.
Party Games had a definite And Then There Were None feel to it, just with high school-ers, some decidedly cheesy moments and a consistent lack of common sense that failed to thrill. I was actually expecting a supernatural flair to this but that twist never came. It was interesting and had definite moments of excitement, but my younger self had been mentally squealing since I snagged a copy of this so I had some fairly high expectations.
For me, reading Party Games was a bit of an experiment. I was obsessed with R.L. Stine when I was a kid and I remember a time when I read nothing but Goosebumps and Fear Street books. It was the initial start to my love of horror novels, no matter how cheesy they were. And cheesy they are, or at least my adult self certainly thinks so. My younger self is slightly offended though. I took a stroll down memory lane and felt 12 years old again by picking this one up and despite my change in standards for what constitutes a ‘good book’ it was fun for that fact alone. Whatever helped me build my love of reading, be it cheesy Goosebumps or cliché Twilight books, I can only smile and be thankful for them.
I received this book free from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
Ridiculously cheesy but enjoyable. Exactly what I expected from a childhood favorite of mine. This type of horror would have been perfect on an episode of Are You Afraid of the Dark? (Google it kids- one of the best kids shows EVER!)
If you love classic spooky stories by R.L. Stine, then definitely give this one a try. It will definitely get you spooked.
Rachel has always had a crush on Brendan Fear, and when he invites her to his birthday party of course she had to say yes, this could be her one chance to get to know him. Even though Rachel was warned by people not to trust Brendan Fear and go to the party, the opportunity was too good to turn down. Finding herself on a summer island home, completely cut off from the rest of the world, Rachel is ready to play some party games. But who wants to play party games that involve a murderer in the house with their own twist to the game?
This isn't the first Fear Street Relaunch book I've read, the other two had given me such high expectations (mostly because they were both so amazing I couldn't put them down) but sadly this one just wasn't as good at the others.
I'm sure if I didn't have such high expectations, I probably would have liked this book much more. But here is why I didn't think it was as good.
While I get this book was supposed to be a mystery, the constant change of the plot, and new mysteries appearing once one was solved, just left me kind of bored. It felt like I was reading three books in one. And unfortunately, the plot didn't get me in that "I need to stay up till I finish this book" mood, and I just ended up putting it off.
The main character was alright. She was nice and normal, but she didn't have anything special about her. She was a plane Jane in an exciting story, and she didn't always handle it very well. It's not that I didn't like reading in her perspective, but I didn't love it, which was very unfortunate. As for the other characters, I really did like a few of them, especially Brendan and Eric. I found them to be more entertaining than the main character herself.
The one aspect I loved was the world building, we get a chance to explore the mansion and the rest of Fear Island, and the descriptions of the places were absolutely amazing. It really made you feel like you were almost there.
Unfortunately not every book can be a hit, but I will definitely continue reading this series. Hoping that the next books are better than this one.
I don't know anyone who was more excited than I that Fear Street was coming back. I think I may have literally squealed for joy when I had heard about it and eagerly awaited the release date and picked up a copy the first chance I got.
I was too young when Fear Street first came around, but when I was about 12 or 13 I stumbled upon an old copy somehow and I was hooked. This series was everything I ever wanted! It had serial killers, teenagers in mortal peril, and suspense and mystery. The truth is Fear Street reminded me a lot of the cheesy horror films I was such a fan of growing up, a la Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer; but there were so many titles the entertainment was unending. I scoured thrift store after thrift store picking up all the discarded Fear Street novels I could find. I would read one a day. I would almost exclusively read Fear Street. I would fantasize day and night about growing up one day and being just like RL Stine and writing a hugely successful series that was just like Fear Street. Eventually high school took over and my obsession eventually subsided. But man oh man is nostalgia ever a great feeling and I'm so happy to see this series revived!
Party Games was an easy, fun read. I enjoyed all the cheesiness and the constant harrowing situations that our "heroine" Rachel finds herself in. Truth be told though, I wanted more. I know I know, this is Fear Street, and what more could I possible expect. But I don't think this was Stine at his best. True, I'm an adult now and have read far better books, and this might be the reason why I feel like I do. But I'm hoping, and thinking!, that Stine is saving some better stories for his future Fear Street novels. I, for one, will definitely be giving the next one a chance.
*Just won this off of the Goodreads Giveaways!! I am really looking forward to reading this Fear Street novel. mmmm, October reading sounds perfect!

That was fun. You can always depend on R.L. Stine to give the kiddies some creeps. This truly was "party games that go wrong." Nice little twists and turns, that let you know you are reading a fear street/goosebumps novel.
If you love either of the series, you will love this one, as well.
Stine with this new series brought back a whole level of nostalgia that I love. Party Games was a quick, easy read that I read in one day. With a few quirky plot twists it kept you interested until the very last page. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this little gem.
R.L. Stine was one of my favorite authors when I was a kid. I used to love his Fear Street series, especially the books about the cheerleaders. I was excited to learn that he was re-booting the Fear Street series for a new generation. Party Games, the first book in the re-booted Fear Street series, was excellent. It brought back all of those nostalgic feelings that I remember while reading the original series as a child.
Even as an adult, I found Party Games to be suspenseful. It kept me on the edge of my seat wondering how Rachel and her friends were going to get out of the various terrifying situations they found themselves in. Some of the situations, such as what happened on the dock, were predictable. I knew that what happened couldn't be true. However, other situations, I had no idea what was going on, or how the characters were going to solve the problem. It brought me back to when I used to read R.L. Stine's books when I was younger, and they always scared the hell out of me. As an adult, the book wasn't terrifying, but it was suspenseful in it's own way. It was more of a mystery than a horror.
I loved the way R.L. Stine ended Party Games. It was an open ending in such a way that there could possibly be a sequel in the future. I really hope that he chooses to write one. I would definitely read it. I can't wait to read more books in the Fear Street Relaunch. I hope that they are just as good as this one. I recommend Party Games to kids and adults alike. I also recommend it to anyone that loves to get creeped out.
Rachel Martin is invited to Brendan Fear's birthday party. When she goes, strange things begin to happen. Can she survive the party games before someone gets killed? Read this book and find out.
Fear Street: Party Games is the first fear street book R.L. Stine has written in 20 years and it was a pretty good read. I enjoy the fear street books and am glad he is continuing them. If you enjoy scary stories, def check this series out.
Entertaining and a quick read. Took me back to my childhood days when I used to be obsessed with the Fear Street books. Definitely cheesy and cringe worthy in many parts. But I still had fun reading it.
