Thanks to Matt Herms’ boldly colored backstory that begins this issue, we know that Sonic and the Gang have successfully defeated Eggman. They haven’t seen him in a while and all has been quiet. All that’s left were his robot inventions more of a nuisance than a real issue, without Eggman behind them. We’re following Sonic on a walk through the forest when he sees a town in peril. Sonic doing what he does best is turn himself into a wheel and rolls into the town to save them from their troubles.

Turns out Sonic is pretty famous in these parts. The members of the militia and other towns people fighting for their lives from the attacking Roboniks, are in awe of Sonic saving them and wishing for his autograph. I’m quite fond of Sonic’s wit and quips, which writer Ian Flynn doesn’t skimp on in this issue.

I love Tracy Yardley’s art in this issue. Again, Matt Herms’ colors are bright and lively, which is exactly what I think of when I think of Sonic. It just keeps a happy feeling throughout the issue, which is exactly how I felt after I finished the issue, especially with all of the callbacks and references that old fans would love, and new fans will come to appreciate.

The story even gives you a bit of a mystery and leaves you wondering what’s next for the worlds’ speediest hedgehog? I for one will definitely will be reading the next issue to find out.

The Verdict: 9.0/10

This was such a breath of fresh air! While I enjoyed the Pre Super Genesis Wave stories, I always felt lost. That's mainly attributed to me jumping into Archie Sonic right in the middle of its run when Ian Flynn took over as head writer. That made it extra hard as so much of Ian's older stories were so deeply baked into Archie Sonic's unique lore that was much closer to that of Sonic SatAm among its original additions to the lore of Sonic. Sorry Archie/SatAm fans, I just prefer my Sonic stories closer to the games. Though I never disliked the new additions to Sonic's universe and I love how they reinterpreted the lore and characters to be more akin to the games. Most of this story just sets the groundwork and establishes the new version of The Freedom Fighters, which works for what it's trying to do. With all that being said, maybe one day I'll read all of Pre Genesis Wave Archie. Not anytime soon though, that's a lot of issues to read through and I am starting to miss reading Spider-Man comics 😢

Countdown to Chaos was my first introduction to Archie Comics' Sonic series. I've been a fan of the Sonic games for many years, so after some good word of mouth about the comics I finally decided to give the series a go.

Archie's Sonic series is vibrantly teeming with life. Each issue plays out a bit like an episode on the Sonic X anime, with a serialized storyline and characters out the wazoo. All of these characters stay very true to their game counterparts, and as a result you don't ever feel like you're lagging behind, trying to get up to speed on where they're at in their development. All of the artwork in this series is top notch stuff. Lots of bright colors and clean pencils keep the story chugging along without a hitch.

To that end, Countdown to Chaos does a fantastic job bringing new readers up to speed on the Sonic comic universe. The artwork's great, the characters wonderfully written, and the story perfectly handled. This comic series is everything the Sonic video games should aspire to be.

5 out of 5 stars.
