Fun read, enjoyed from beginning to end. Does anyone read this series without starting from the point of being a childhood Robotech fan? I very much doubt it.
There’s little point in criticizing the plot or even the dialogue, the authors were tied to a timeline and a pre-existing start and end point. The truly enjoyable part is getting to know more of the background motivations for the characters, even if the relationship between Rick & Lisa is painful to observe, and we are forced to fall out of love with MinMei.
Probably a 3.5, but I am rounding it up for old times’ sake. 😉

Yes, it bothers me that there is one instance of Roy (Fokker) being written as Ray.
Also didn't know that there was supposed to be radioactive fallout to worry over from the Zentraedi attack on Earth.
Solid, though. The books are very much how I remember the show instead of how the show actually was.

After reading Battlehymn this book became my back seat reader. I try to keep a book in the backseat of my car so that I have something to read when my wife is shopping or I am waiting outside a doctors office. I would recommend this Book to anyone who is a Robotech fan but to no one else. The writing is excellent but since I am not a fan of Robotech I found this extremely long and boring.

Challenge: Book made from TV show.
I loved the Anime as a child, and was so offended when my mom called it a soap opera. Then I rewatched the cartoon, and read the book. She was right. It's a soap opera. And it feels so much like they made up the plot as they went along.
Still, I couldn't make myself stop reading until we got to the ending I wanted to see.

Similar to the previous volume, most of this book (which really covers three of the novels in the series) is an almost verbatim transcription of the dialog and scenes from the animated TV show. There does seem to be a little more effort than the show on tying this part of the story to the next part. The Robotech TV show, which combined three unrelated Japanese anime series into three seasons of what were supposed to be a single narrative. This book ends the first season of the show. I never thought the convoluted combination worked well as some of the story elements, technical abilities, and animation styles of the the three series were clearly mismatched. Here, the author included parts of the second series into the first series story as kind of precursor of what to expect. Not much was added to the TV show and again, I don't see the need to both watch the TV show and read these books, but I have them, and I've started the series so I probably will finish.

A great read
An amazing, groundbreaking show turned into a novel. The action is steady, and most of the characters are relatable and enjoyable. Even the most annoying characters from the cartoon are given more interesting lives.

Great telling of the tv series.
These novels expanded the Robotech TV show without straying from the plot. I wish Harmony Gold would put the rest of the books back up for digital purchase.

I will start by saying I am biased about this book. For one Robotech the animated series was my favorite anime when I was young and the first 'serious' cartoon I watched. However as reviews are personal opinions(especially ones you aren't getting paid for) I loved this first collection of Robotech books.
For one, in short amount of time James Luceno and Brian Daley(RIP) had to write these stories as Jack McKinney I feel they have a high standard of quality. Both veteran SciFi writers and personal friends they not only capture the original story but expand it with tons of extra details. It has been awhile since I read the collection, but I had watched The Macross Saga more than once and the books really bring the world of Robotech to life.
The characters feel realistic as does the loose of some of the characters. The SDF1 is brought to life as a space fortress and Captain Gloval is expanded on, who was in the anime and story my favorite character, Roy Fokker being 2nd.
If you love Robotech then definitely read these omnibus', you'll be blown away.

This second trio was more excellent books. They were just as good as the first three and continued while finishing the saga. However there were some inconsistencies. So at the end you had the SDF-1 fire the main cannon at the enemy ship. It mortally wounds the ship but the ship still crashes in. This is nothing like the first series where when they fired the ship they took out 1-3 enemy ships. Other then that, it was a great series.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Finishing off the Macross saga, these are actually numbered correctly for their chronological order, taking the place of books 4-6 (go figure).

It is simply perfect for any Robotech fan. It's like a very thorough retelling of the second half of the Macross Saga.
