When a boat grounds itself on the sandy beach of the New Jersey coast, the first of many grisly murders are discovered. Six badly decomposed bodies are aboard giving off a strong unidentifiable odor. The residents of Atlantic City are used to murders in the gambling capital of the east coast, but these are especially horrific. Jeff Hodge is a private investigator retired from the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He spots the vessel after responding to a shrieking woman on the beach. After checking on her condition, he looks inside the small craft and immediately calls the local police. Jack Mercer is the lead detective responding to the scene. A veteran of many years in the homicide division, he had never witnessed bodies in the condition they were found. The stench coming from the boat was so bad he vomited like a rookie.
