Not a very exciting devil-worship book, despite the lurid premise. The heroine is scheduled to be sacrificed by an evil rector who's secretly turned his village church into an altar for Satan. This is established in the first chapter. We get all kinds of mysterious lore about the rector and his murky past, and the girls in his various parishes who went missing. Unfortunately, this doesn't speed things up to anything close to a thriller's pace. It feels instead as if the goodies and the baddies are tip-toeing around one another while we patiently wait for the blood-soaked Satanic climax. Worse, the goodies seem to be helping the baddies with their evil plans. 'Practice for a mysterious ritual that I know could kill me? Sure.' 'Be cheerful around you even though I know you're a murderer and a Satanist? Why, certainly.' This is taking English politeness WAY too far.
