4.5 Sterne - Ich hab Brown Eyed zufällig auf der Buch Berlin im letzten Jahr entdeckt und hauptsächlich wegen dem süßen Cover mitgenommen. Das hat sich auch unglaublich gelohnt, denn as turns out die Story war mindestens genauso cute. Die Charaktere muss man einfach ins Herz schließen und ich kanns kaum abwarten, bald zu erfahren, wie es mit Levi und Jayson aber auch ihren Freund:innen weitergeht!

Once I picked up this book, it was so hard to put down. It was very enjoyable, and I finished reading it within less than 24 hours.
First let's talk about what I disliked... At times in the beginning, it felt a little bit choppy and confusing to follow, however I think that may be able to be explained by the fact that this book was originally written in German and then later translated to English, so there may be some translation issues along the way. There were also certain situations that Jayson and Levi were going to be in or things that they were going to do that I wish would have been expanded upon or talked about, but just weren't. And the ending?? I'm glad it got to that point, but what happened at the end was so frustrating, because you spend the whole book rooting for Jayson and Levi. The majority of the book was told from two points of view, but all the sudden there was one chapter from a completely different point of view, and that chapter just seemed out of place.
Now onto what I absolutely LOVED about this book (spoiler alert... I loved it SO MUCH MORE than I disliked it)... Levi and Jayson have a little "West Side Story" moment towards the beginning of the book, which I absolutely loved. The pacing is slow, but it was great because it allowed the tension to build within the story and helped you really start rooting for Jayson and Levi. I love how diverse the characters in this book were. There is not a doubt in my mind that every single person who picks up this book will be able to see a small part of themselves in at least one of the characters. There were so many sweet moments within the book that were just really beautiful, and it allowed you to see just how much the two main characters really cared about each other.
At its core is a beautiful story of two high school aged boys who meet and fall in love, and who doesn't love a story like that? If you love stories like that, then you will love this book!

Und das alles wegen ein paar brauner Augen!
Die Autorin hat eine Dilogie geschrieben über Levi Phan und Jayson Young. Es ist ihr Debüt und ich habe den ersten Teil der zweiteiligen Reihe als Rezensionsexemplar erhalten. Das Buch stand aber bereits länger auf meiner Leseliste, umso mehr habe ich mich gefreut, dass ich die beiden jungen Männer endlich kennenlernen durfte.
Levi ist 17 Jahre alt. Er lebt mit seinem alleinerziehenden Vater und geht zur Schule, hat eine beste Freundin und einen besten Freund und lebt ein ganz normales Leben eines Teenagers, als er eines Tages den etwas älteren Jayson kennenlernt. Sofort verliebt er sich.
Was mir richtig gut gefallen hat, ist die Tatsache, dass sowohl die queere Repräsentanz als auch die PoC Repräsentation sehr selbstverständlich und beiläufig erwähnt werden und nicht den Plot vorantreiben. Genau so soll es sein. Wir brauchen wirklich viel mehr davon! Hauptsächlich geht es weder um die Hautfarben der Jungs noch um ihre sexuelle Präferenzen, sondern um ganz klassische Coming of Age Themen wie erste Liebe, Freundschaft und den Umgang mit den Eltern. Ganz besonders gut gelungen fand ich die Einbindung von Mental Health und die Panikattacken, unter denen Jayson leidet.
Das Cover zeigt uns die zwei Jungen, die auf einem markant blau gehaltenen Bordstein laufen. Die Straße daneben ist in einem kräftigen Rot. Die Farben spiegeln sich auch in den Klamotten der beiden Protagonisten. Jayson ist links, er hat schwarze Haare, blaue-rote Klamotten, dunkle Haut und die titelgebenden braunen Augen, Levi läuft rechts, seine Haare sind ebenfalls braun, etwas länger, seine Haut ist heller, die Klamotten dunkler und weniger lässig als die von Jayson. Beide Jungen schauen sich scheu verliebt an. In weiß ist der Titel des Romans (Brown Eyed) und der Name der Autorin (Crimson K.) zu lesen.
Die Blicke, die sich die beiden Jungen auf dem Cover zuwerfen spiegeln dabei perfekt das Gefühl und die Atmosphäre im Roman. Den Lesenden ist relativ schnell klar, dass die beiden verliebt sind, aber es dauert eine gewisse Zeit, bis sich die beiden das selbst auch eingestehen können. Auch das eine oder andere Missverständnis und Jayson Erkrankung stehen ihnen im Weg.
Als kleiner Kritikpunkt hätte ich die enormen Zufälle in der ersten Hälfte des Buches, die immer wieder zu Zusammentreffen führen. Die beiden gehen schon länger auf eine Schule, sind sich aber nie begegnet. Nachdem sie sich im ersten Kapitel dann kennenlernen, begegnen sie sich in den nächsten Tagen ständig - in der Schule, aber auch zum Beispiel im Supermarkt. Ich meine, klar, solche Zufälle gibt es, aber die Zufälle häufen sich doch recht sehr, und wären meiner Meinung nach gar nicht nötig gewesen, denn die beiden jungen Männer verstehen sich gut und auch ihre jeweiligen Freundeskreise verflechten immer mehr miteinander. Sie hätten sich also auch gezielt verabreden können, was in meinen Augen realistischer gewesen wäre.
Von diesem Kritikpunkt mal abgesehen, war ich aber sehr bezaubernd von der Geschichte. Sie ist in großen Teilen sehr romantisch und leicht zu lesen, beinhaltet aber auch viel Gesellschaftskritik und regt zum Nachdenken an. Besonders gelungen fand ich in dem Zusammenhang wie gesagt die psychischen Probleme von Jayson. Er ist auf dem ersten Blick der coolere der beiden, dass ausgerechnet er die Stärke hat, vor Levi diese "Schwäche" zu offenbaren und ihm somit sehr vertraut, finde ich sehr gelungen.
Was mir weiterhin gut gefallen hat, ist die enorme Vielfalt an Nebenfiguren. Das Thema Freundschaft finde ich häufig unterrepräsentiert, hier aber ist es ein sehr wichtiges Plotelement. Die Nebenfiguren haben eigene kleine Stränge und richtig toll fand ich das lesbische / bisexuelle Mütterpaar, das gemeinsam ihren Sohn aufzieht. Die Familie wird so selbstverständlich von der Autorin eingefügt. Sagte ich schon, dass wir davon noch viel mehr brauchen?
Gegen Ende gibt es nochmal eine Wendung, mit der ich nicht gerechnet hatte, offene Fragen und auch eine weitere dritte PoV Figur. Das macht definitiv Lust, weiterzulesen.
Im Anschluss an die Geschichte gibt es noch ein Nachwort von der Autorin zu lesen, das mich ehrlich gesagt auch ziemlich gerührt hat.
Unerwähnt möchte ich auch nicht lassen, dass es Brown Eyed als E-Book auch bei anderen Online-Händlern außer Amazon zu kaufen gibt. Ich weiß aus eigener Erfahrung, dass es nicht leicht ist, sich dieser monopolistischen Macht entgegenzustellen, umso dankbarer bin ich allen Autor*innen, die es dennoch tun.
Ich werde die Autorin definitiv weiter im Auge behalten und wünsche ihr von Herzen alles Gute für die Zukunft und für weitere Veröffentlichungen.

Levi ist eigentlich ein ganz normaler Junge mit ganz normalen Hobbys. Jayson hingegen ist das komplette Gegenteil von Levi. Er ist nämlich der gefeierte Basketballstar der Schule und sehr beliebt. Die beiden kennen einander nicht und doch treffen sich die beiden zufällig auf einem Basketballspiel. Levi muss bei dem Spiel gezwungenermaßen zuschauen und wirft dabei ein Auge auf Jayson. Und auch Jayson sieht Levi und wirft sofort ein Auge auf ihn…
Ich habe dieses Buch als Rezensionsexemplar von der Autorin erhalten, vielen Dank dafür! Das beeinflusst jedoch in keiner Weise meine Meinung! Ich war zu Beginn total gespannt auf diese Geschichte, da die Autorin für mich ganz neu war. Trotzdem hat mich die Geschichte sofort angesprochen und habe mich sehr darüber gefreut, dass ich dieses Buch lesen durfte. Und wenn ich ehrlich bin, hab ich es nicht bereut. Mich hat die Geschichte von Anfang an bis zum Ende hin, total begeistern können.
Die Charaktere haben mir sehr gut gefallen. Ich fand die Charaktere total realistisch und authentisch, das sind für mich Charaktere gewesen, die man am nächsten Tag im Supermarkt treffen könnte. Auch schön fand ich, wie die beiden zu sich selber und zu ihrer Sexualität finden und sich mit dieser auch auseinandersetzen. Als Leser*in hat man sich als Teil der Freundesgruppe gefühlt und es fühlte sich so an, als wären wir live dabei und man könnte die Charaktere fast berühren. Außerdem kann man sich so gut mit den einzelnen Charakteren identifizieren und auch ihre Entscheidungen kann man gut nachvollziehen. Selbst die Nebencharaktere fand ich super und sie haben einfach richtig gut zu Buch gepasst.
Besonders schön fand ich, dass die Geschichte so nah an der Realität ist. Sie zeigt einem Schwierigkeiten, aber gleichzeitig zeigt sie einem auch, wie wunderschön das Leben sein kann. Die Beziehung zwischen den beiden ist so schön mit zu verfolgen. Ich habe zu beiden eine Bindung und Nähe aufgebaut, sodass ich mit ihnen geweint, gelacht und mit gelitten habe. Wie gerne hätte ich die beiden einmal in den Arm genommen und ganz fest geknuddelt. Wirklich, so tolle Charaktere!
Der Schreibstil von Crimson K. war für mich neu, da dies mein erstes Buch war, was ich von ihr gelesen hatte. Jedoch konnte sie mich komplett mit ihrer Schreibweise überzeugen und ich habe das Lesen total genossen. Jedes Gefühl und jede Emotion kam direkt bei mir an und man konnte es so gut nachempfinden. Crimson K. hat einen flüssigen, lockeren und leichten Schreibstil, der dafür sorgt, dass man gut durch das Buch kommt. Auch der Lesefluss wird hierbei in keiner Weise gestört.
,,Brown Eyed‘‘ ist eine wunderschöne Geschichte, die voller Liebe strotzt. Dieses Buch ist einfach unglaublich schön und ich habe jede einzelne Seite genossen. Ich liebe alles an dem Buch… die Charaktere, die Themen, den Schreibstil. Für mich ist einfach alles rundum perfekt. Von mir gibt es für dieses Buch eine ganz klare Empfehlung. Holt euch unbedingt dieses Buch, ihr werdet es nicht bereuen!

2 stars - This was an ok read (for the most part). I had some issues that held it back for me. Would I recommend it? Not really. It was mostly cute and I didn't dislike the overall story, but I just found some things I couldn't reconcile with.
First, for the parts I really enjoyed. The story overall was sweet and I enjoyed getting perspectives from both Jayson and Levi. I also thought that the emotions and the boys' concerns were handled really well.
Now, there are a number of items that really took enjoyment out of the story for me. First, the word choices and sentence structures did take some adjustment, which I understand with a translation may not always be perfect. I think a really good editor and beta readers could resolve a lot of this. Second, I didn't understand the two scenes/chapters involving Timofey and Enzo. The first scene in the middle of the story felt like it came out of nowhere, and if it had contributed to the overall plot of the story, I would understand it more. Then, the chapter from the third perspective was jarring and didn't flow with the rest of the book at all. I don't know if maybe the author was trying to introduce a story for a future book in the same world, but it just didn't hit right. Third, I'm not sure if the original story was set in Canada or in Germany/Europe, but there were a lot of oddities in the story. For example, toward the end of the book, Even if it was set in Europe, I don't know that this would have been likely either. Lastly, the ending...

What a sweet book. This is the kind of novel I would recommend teens or lovers of Heartstopper to read. What I liked the most is the amount of diversity you find in the characters as well as how relatable some situations were. On the other hand, It was very interesting to see how the author addressed the matter of social anxiety; which is something I think you barely see in novels. Another strong point I saw was how nicely the characters treated each other, with 0 toxicity. Thank you for that!
Finally, even if the end was quite abrupt for me, it leaves an open door to a second novel. ¡Qué libro tan dulce! Este es el tipo de novela que recomendaría a adolescentes o amantes de Heartstopper. Lo que más me gustó fue la diversidad de los personajes y lo cercanas que eran algunas situaciones. Por otro lado, fue muy interesante ver cómo la autora abordó el tema de la ansiedad social, algo que creo que rara vez se ve en las novelas. Otro punto fuerte que noté fue lo bien que se trataban los personajes entre sí, sin toxicidad. ¡Gracias por eso!
Finalmente, aunque el final fue bastante abrupto para mí, deja una puerta abierta a una segunda novela. También creo que la personalidad tanto de Levi como de Jayson podría haberse desarrollado un poco más para fortalecer el punto de vista dual; sin embargo, es cierto que son adolescentes y todos sabemos que a veces las hormonas los hacen actuar de manera diferente a lo que son.
En general, Brown Eyes es una encantadora novela queer que tiene el potencial de ser tu próximo libro acogedor.

What a sweet book. This is the kind of novel I would recommend teens or lovers of Heartstopper to read. What I liked the most is the amount of diversity you find in the characters as well as how relatable some situations were. On the other hand, It was very interesting to see how the author addressed the matter of social anxiety; which is something I think you barely see in novels. Another strong point I saw was how nicely the characters treated each other, with 0 toxicity. Thank you for that!
Finally, even if the end was quite abrupt for me, it leaves an open door to a second novel. How does the shyest person spit all the game??? This book was great. It pulled you in and kept you. I love a good LGBTQIA+ book that doesn’t have all the toxicity as other books do. ✨ - In an almost love at first sight fashion, Levi and Jayson exchange glances at a basketball game and soon can’t stop thinking about the tension that lay in their cursory meeting. Soon, through chance (or not so chance) encounters, they become friends, but maybe just maybe friends can soon become more.
✨ - Oh gosh, what I love about these characters is what I also find frustrating about them: their ability to think rationally and realistically and relatively calmly. I wish most teenagers could think as level headed as Levi and Jayson - it would make my life counseling students a bit easier haha. With that said, they embody the opposites attract quality with Jayson’s outgoing self and Levi’s almost painful introversion. I love what they bring out in one another though, and how they embody and when necessary, create systems of support.
✨ - The diversity and representation are real in this book. Most people can probably find themselves identifying with at least one of the characters. The only other gripe I had was the third additional pov without much consistency going back to it, but in terms of why, I get it.
Final Recommendation: For a sweet, feel good story, read. But be warned, the ending… it’s unexpected to an extent.

I think this was a sweet book, and it was a nice read! Would I go back and read it? Probably not.
Let me go through what I enjoyed first. This book has a huge range of diverse races and types of representation, which I think is something that is severely lacking in LGBTQ YA. The male leads are both rational so we didn’t have that annoying trope where they miscommunicate for no reason at all. Overall, this book picked me up on a bad day! Also, this book was set in Canada, which (as a Canadian) was interesting to see.
My only criticism for this work is that the writing style seems to tell rather than show quite a bit of the time. This made it frustrating to read at times. However I don’t think this is a deal breaker, if you read the summary and think you would enjoy this book, absolutely give it a read!
The unfortunate truth of YA is that authors write one book and then can’t replicate the success of it. Crimson has something special here, and I’m excited to see where she takes it.

This was a fast paced quick beautiful story, I enjoyed it. I was connected to it as much but I do think this is a great story for a lot of people and I just loved their story and how it unfolds. It’s sweet and tender and very cute.
