About the author

Sebastião Ribeiro Salgado Júnior was a Brazilian social documentary photographer and photojournalist.
He traveled in over 120 countries for his photographic projects. Most of these have appeared in numerous press publications and books. Touring exhibitions of his work have been presented throughout the world.
Salgado was a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. He was awarded the W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund Grant in 1982, Foreign Honorary Membership of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1992; and the Royal Photographic Society's Centenary Medal and Honorary Fellowship (HonFRPS) in 1993. He was a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts at the Institut de France since April 2016.

Libro magnifico da uno dei più grandi e celebrati fotografi contemporanei. Risultato di un lavoro di sette anni, tra il 1977 e il 1984, in America Latina, è il primo dei tanti capolavori di Salgado. Va in scena la cultura indiana e rurale di quelle terre, umanità ai margini che si ritrova a subire passivamente la transazione socio economica dei paesi in cui sta, in perenne sospensione tra estrema povertà e spiritualità, celebrando quella dignità umana con un’empatia che si ritroverà in tutte le sue opere che seguiranno. Le foto sono solo 48 perché fu questo il limite massimo finanziabile nel progetto originario, una sintesi che però rese estremamente solido e coerente il progetto. Questa è la recente pubblicazione di Contrasto e riporta i testi originali di Salgado, di Gonzalo Torrente Ballester e di Claude Nori.

Chiaroscuro silhouettes and dry textures that shows something, that our languages may not be able to grasp. When salgado recovered for us the enchanted, mystical and ghost-ridden aspect of the daily of lives of the destitute, we are terrified by thier momentarily life which shares a sisterhood with death at the extreme conditions which many of us are poorly aware of.

4 stars; been wading into the world of photography of late and eagerly brushing up on the classics; Salgado is a very recent discovery and I was struck by his style; the photo collection is freely available online at the internet archive, go check!

Li ele fora da ordem cronológica de publicação, e mesmo depois do "Trabalhadores" ele tem uma densidade fantástica. Não é incrível como a pobreza possa ser tão bonita?
