Difficult Run

In the spring of 2005, the gruesome murder of two teenagers in Great Falls Park —a majestic, heavily forested national park near Washington, D.C.—begins an investigation by U.S. Park Police Detective M.J. Powers that will lead her into the darkest corners of the human mind and test her both professionally and personally. A lifelong distance runner, M.J. begins doing her daily runs in the park believing that the murderer may frequent its trails. When she learns of a strange figure seen moving through the park at night during a thunderstorm, the otherwise scenic landscape becomes an ominous backdrop as she seeks to solve the mystery.Driven to find the killer before he strikes again, she enlists the help of a homeless Vietnam veteran, a dedicated park ranger and her partner—who is also her lover—in uncovering the dark secret behind the murders.

This is a super quick read. Unfortunately, it's also super boring.

How can a murder mystery be boring? It's the lack of action. It's the drudging along about waking up, dressing, and running every day...for over a year... It's the humdrum characters who move along slowly. It's the monotonous lack of action or anything interesting that happens.

It's too bad it's so unexciting. I believe the author did quite a bit of research and has a clever concept (in the end). But the writing is tedious.

This is a skip.

Can I rate it zero stars?
I wanted to stop at 20%, but refused to believe it wouldn’t get better. It didn’t.

Very poorly written with a ridiculous ending

A fun read, especially for those of us who live in the area. The end turned into E. A. Poe, though.

An intriguing mystery, with a satisfying ending and plenty of guessing going on!

Loved the build up of the plot, enjoyed the dedication of the main character to solve the mysteries, and the flow of the storyline.

(Actually, my knees started to hurt with all the running our main character did as part of her cover to find out the answers to all the questions!)

All good!

It was not a very good book, but then I didn't expect it to be. It was the locale that drew me to the book, and I did find it interesting/entertaining. It takes places in Great Falls Park in Northern Virginia. I live in Northern Virginia and am attracted to books which take place there. This one is a murder mystery and does have an intriguing plot.

What impressed me in the end was John Dibble's style of writing, not the story he set out to tell. There was nothing in it to arouse my curiosity or interest. If I read through, it was only because of John Dibble's excellent writing.
