Perumal Murugan is a well-known contemporary Tamil writer and poet. He was written six novels, four collections of short stories and four anthologies of poetry. Three of his novels have been translated into English to wide acclaim: Seasons of the Palm, which was shortlisted for the prestigious Kiriyama Award in 2005, Current Show, and most recently, One Part Woman. He has received awards from the Tamil Nadu government as well as from Katha Books.

I've said this before and I will say it again, Perumal's writing is like breathing in the scent of earth. The heady feeling that follows post reading Rising Heat is overwhelming. Perumal's words drip with melancholy making his loss feel like your own. Twenty nine years ago, Perumal wrote his first novel titled Eru Veyyil, which gathered critics and praises for his honest take on village life. Translated into English by Janani Kannan, this novel has the power to move the readers and this comes as no surprise considering how capable the author is at mastering the art of writing poignantly. Rising Heat may not be as captivating as One Part Woman which has still managed to remain my favourite, but it does create a certain amount of impression on the readers.

Selvan is boiling with rage as he looks at the lands which were once lush and had belonged to his family but now lies obsolete after the State took them over to build housing colonies. With nowhere to go, his family moves to a small house in a nearby town. As the days go by, Selvan witnesses his family's downfall which at times becomes too unbearable for a boy of his age. With many families losing their land, they are forced to set up shops to earn a living and often times, women even got into prostitution. Selvan's family manages well for a while what with his father working in the remaining piece of land, brother working in the cinema theatre and his sister working in a construction site. But things go awry when shame engulfs his family after a particular incident.

The vivid manner in which Perumal paints the characters' authenticity and the description of every day tasks is a delight to read. His portrayal of their language in its crudest form, the unconventional relationships shared by the family members and the various angles of village politics have been showcased brilliantly. Ever so often, Mani, the loving dog of Selvan is mentioned through which the loss of their lands have been described in a heart-wrenching manner. Mani's plight, his yearning for the land that he grew up on strikes a chord. The dynamics between the older and younger generations are written distinctly. It wasn't easy to read about parents being abandoned by their children, men who pocketed money from innocents in the pretense of having influence and the senior citizens who mourned the loss of their land and with it, the ways to earn money. Rising Heat, in my palms felt like blazing sand, the intensity of which singed my skin. The unfairness to which people are subjugated, while snatching away properties that belonged to their ancestors, is still an ongoing issue.

In spite of being an ardent fan of Perumal's writing, I couldn't give this novel five stars and this mainly had to do with the translation. It felt tepid, the after effect of the narration feeling very unsatisfactory. But the essence of the story remains intact and for this Rising Heat deserves an applaud. Every time I read Perumal's work, I have this incredible urge to learn Tamil so that I can savour his words in all it's glory. I recommend this.

ஏறுவெயில்: நகரமயமாதல் நரகமயமாகும்போது

A very uneven, but interesting book. Perumal Murugan's first novel published in 1991. Having read his later works, it's obvious that he's experimenting with his style and just getting a grasp of his role as a novelist. Yet it is very intriguing, sad and signs of his future craftsmanship is evident in some chapters. All his novels are important documents of Tamil country life, recording every smallest detail with perfection - a way of living that is fast dissolving into dust. This shift in culture and people and attitudes and the entire way of living is what this book is about. It's about how farmlands were (and are being) hastily sold to be modified into residential areas, about the emotional price of industrialization, about society in respect to the family, about powerplay within families, about domestic abuse, about the financial crisis in the 80s, about alcoholism and casteism, about change and how it's almost always for the worst and about the whole depressing nature of Tamil and by extension, Indian life.

First of all the translator Janani Kannan did not prove honest her work. Though this book is translated from Tamil to English, I could still see more than 5 tamil words in each page.
Speaking of the story, I thought of quitting the book as on second chapter, but it was from the third chapter that things began happening.
Though all stuffs through out the book are so random, theru conveyed an interesting message at the end of each chapter.
I expected that all random stuff to coincide in the last chapter like magic, but last chapter was also some random event.
The book speaks about caste issues in every village of the nation in a heat warming manner which got it a 3 stars

1980களின் மத்தியில், வட்டார வழக்கு பேச்சின் மூலம் மத்திய மேற்கு தமிழகத்தில் ஆட்டூர் என்ற கிராமத்தை புனைந்து, களமாக கொண்ட கதை. 'மணி' என்ற கூப்பிட்டபடி சின்னசாமி பார்வையில் கதை ஆரம்பிக்கிறது.
சின்னசாமியை 'அவன்', 'இவன்' என்று விளித்தபடியே அவனது பார்வையில் கதையை சொல்லி செல்கிறார், பெருமாள்முருகன்.

5ம் அத்தியாயத்தின் கடைசியில், சின்னசாமியின் அக்காள் திருமண பத்திரிக்கையை அவனது நண்பர்கள் அழைக்கும்விதமாக எழுதப்பட்டருக்கிறது. மிகவும் வித்தியாசாமானதாகவும் புதுமையானதாவும் உள்ளது.

வாசிக்க ஆரம்பிக்கையில் நாவலுடன் ஒன்ற முடியவில்லை., ஆனால் ஒரு சில அத்தியாயங்கள் கடந்த பின்னர், நாமும் சின்னசாமியின் ஆட்டூர் கிராமத்திலும் அதனை சுற்றிய கிராம பகுதிகளிலும் பயணிப்போம்.. முழுக்க கற்பனை என முன்னொட்டு கூறியிருந்தாலும், அந்த இளையவனாக வந்தது இந்நாவலை எழுதியவர்��ானோ எனும் சந்தேகம் இல்லாமல் இல்லை.

There is a feeling of happiness when you come across colloquial terms in a translated book that was originally written in a language that you are very familiar with; a language that you use to communicate with your near and dear ones everyday; a language that has been a part of you ever since you can remember; a language that it is an essential part of you. This was what it felt to read the Rising Heat by Perumal Murugan, like delving into the arms of the tangible comfort that is evoked by a sense of familiarity.

Rising heat is the story of  Selvan, also affectionately called as 'The boy' by the author throughout the novel. Selvan's life is no longer the same. The long arms of modernity and development had taken over his family's lands to pave the way for a better future, i.e urbanization of agricultural lands. The story follows the struggles of the boy as he finds himself unable to comprehend the realities that he now finds himself and his family in.

As the quality of life and lifestyle alters in the boy's household, there are many changes that take place, changes that are not exactly for the best. The boy finds himself at crossroads most often, unable to let go of the past and unable to accept the present. In that there is a kinship between him and another member of his family, his dog Mani.

One can arguably state that Mani is a reflection of his owner, unencumbered by the pitfalls of society and civilization. It is with Mani that our sympathies lie as he tries to go back to the only place he feels at home, ironically the only place that is no longer his home. Mani is the unspoken hero of this book, trotting around like the symbol of sorrow throughout the pages of the book, unable to understand nor accept the changes taking place around him. Mani is the silent spectator, the one whose silence speaks volumes throughout the story.

Though Rising Heat is the story of Selvan, affectionately called 'The boy' by the author it is with Mani that our sympathies lie throughout the book, right to the very end.

I'm gonna be honest here... I got this book in a book exchange and agreed to read it only because there was a dog (Mani) as a character here.

This book was originally written in Tamil in 1991 and recently translated into English. I struggled to read this; It felt like I was doing a chore. Somehow I managed to finish this book.

This book is about a family having to sell their land to build an urban colony. The book highlights the family's hardship and how relations between the family change. The book has no rising action, climax, or falling action. If you love details in a story, then the author has fulfilled your wish in this book. the author touches upon the emotional price of industrialization, powerplay within families, domestic abuse, the 80s financial crisis, alcoholism and casteism, and so on.

Unfortunately, Mani didn't have a big role to play, but I did shed a tear over his death towards the end of the book.

மானாவரி/மேட்டுகாட்டு விவசாயம் in the kongu region explained well. The family has issue on daily basis, how the issue has tortured their children explained here.

For someone not familiar with the written Tamil language this was one of the more difficult reads from this author -too many Tamil words were used which was difficult to understand - it is tough to balance the story telling with translated works. I enjoyed One Part Woman, but the language and writing in this distracted me from the story. I couldn't finish the book. Maybe I just didn't have the patience.

அப்படியாகப்பட்ட கதை தான் இந்த ஏறுவெயில். 'என் நாவல்களுக்கு அமைந்த தலைப்புகளிலேயே இதற்கு நிகரான தலைப்பு வேறில்லை' என்கிறார் கதாசிரியர். இந்த புத்தகத்தைப் படித்தால், நீங்களும் ஒப்புக்கொள்வீர்கள். ஏறுவெயில் என்றால் காலை வெயில்; அது நாளின் நேரம் ஆக ஆக, வெயிலின் தாக்கம் கூடும். அதைப் போன்றதே இக்கதையின் முக்கிய பாத்திரமான பொன்னையாவின் வாழ்வில் வரும் துயரங்களும்.

மக்களும் விவசாயமும் செழிப்பாய் இருந்ந மண்ணில் காலனி கட்டுவதற்காக அரசாங்கம் அவர்களை வெளியேற்றுகிறது. ஆண்டாண்டாய் பார்த்து வந்த வேலையும் இன்றி துவண்டிருந்த குடும்பங்களில் பொன்னைய்யாவின் குடும்பமும் ஒன்று.

பெருமாள் முருகன் அவர்கள் எழுதிய புத்தகங்களிள் இரண்டு முன்னர் படித்திருக்கிறேன். ஆனால் அவை ஆங்கிலத்தில் மொழிபெயர்க்கப்பட்டவை. இது அவருடைய முதல் புத்தகம். 1991ல் எழுதப்பட்டது. இந்த பத்தகத்தை அவர் எழுதியவாரே படிக்க நேர்ந்ததில் மகிழ்ச்சி அடைகிறேன்.

A brutal story about a Tamil village, a family, a community, avarice, deceit, land, agriculture, adandoned women of the household, drunkard men of the same household, conniving middle men relatives whom we usually address as "mama", irresponsible sons, bad upbringing of these sons, the boy Selvan and the dog Mani. The story begins with Mani, the dog and ends with him. In between is the real life story of a family's struggle over their land and living. If there was one true character who was loyal to his land and became one with its soil, it had to be Mani. The dialect is in mainly Kongunaadu's Tamil tongue. This one's an English translation. As a Tamil myself, I could understood the prose and the raw emotions which were lost in translation. Nevertheless, this is still a stunning read and the story stays with you for a long time. Written by the extraordinary Tamil writer Perumal Murugan. The original Tamil novel title is ஏறுவெயில் "Eru Veyil". 5 golden stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

What a powerful read! It’s easy to see why Perumal Murugan is regarded as such a remarkable author. Rising Heat captures the slow but relentless encroachment of agricultural land by houses and factories, portraying how these changes disrupt the traditional way of life. Promises of wealth initially entice the villagers, but ultimately, these promises lead to a life of hardship, even death.

Each chapter delves deeper into the escalating tensions—first between the villagers and the new residents of the colony, then within families, and finally within the protagonist himself. The "boy," our central character, is rendered a helpless spectator, watching as his village and family crumble around him. His attempts to escape only reveal that what lies beyond is even worse than the life he's trying to flee. Throughout the narrative, themes of greed and caste-based politics loom large, accelerating the community's downfall.

This heart-wrenching story reminds me of Vairamuthu's Cactus Land, which I read around this time last year. Both novels deliver a poignant commentary on societal changes and personal struggles.

Set in the 80's , the novel is a coming of age story of the protagonist from more of a social point of view. The protagonist's family owns a whole stretch of land in their village. Rapid urbanization and family dynamics lead to a situation where the same family loses their land and are led to a situation where they have to buy a piece of land from the stretch they once owned and wat led to this is the social commentary of the author. The novel being perumal murugan's debut is patchy at times in story transitions but the author is always on dot in painting the image of a rural village and the ugly caste dynamics that dictate the day today life of the villagers. His use of local dialect brings the story close to the heart. Now moving on to explore his following works .

Rising Heat

In Rising Heat, Perumal Murugan explores the attachment to land and the ache that comes from parting with it. We see the rapid changes that follow as quick money makes and destroys people and changes the villages that once were. In this background we have a horribly dysfunctional family and see the suffering it creates. As usual PM brings to fore the casual violence that lurks in every heart. Beating the dog you love is normalised, as is reacting with extreme drama and aggression when a daughter falls in love and spends a night with her lover.

This Perumal Murugan book was quite unbalanced compared to his more recent works, I wonder if the translation might have affected my experience. At times, the narrative felt confusing, particularly in distinguishing if it's first-person perspective or the narrator’s voice, which hindered the flow. However, the core of the story—about landowners forced to sell their ancestral property and the cascade of problems that follow—is both simple and powerful. I believe a stronger translation could have brought out the richness of the narrative even more effectively.

It’s a story of downfall! Story of most of the Indian families is similar to this. Although the story is really good but I think a lot of potential wasn’t explored with the female characters, the reason could the protagonist is a boy.

Another negative story about changes in society. Why PM has a negative take on everything? An author should move the crowd to look for silver lining in every situation without exaggeration. Better than Poonachi.

After reading One Part Woman and sequels i was expecting some good writing in Rising Heat but I am very disappointed. No plot to keep you engaged neither strong characters nor the narrative. A very forgettable book.
