Why Should Britain Tremble - A Submariner's Tale

Rate this book
The Royal Navy's submarine flotilla is known as The Silent Service. Spending weeks and sometimes months beneath the oceans in a dangerous world where one mistake could bring about the loss of the entire crew, submariners are a breed apart.Chas Cooke spent thirteen years serving in the three main types of submarine in the Royal Navy's arsenal and in this book he tells of the camaraderie of those who serve together beneath the waves, of the strains such a life places on the submariner's family and the raucous and sometimes bizarre behaviour of those who spend their lives in a steel tube many hundreds of feet under the water. Why Should Britain Tremble - A Submariner's Tale is a sometimes bawdy, often comical and occasionally heartwrenching story of the submariner's life.

This book is written by a former sailor covering his life in the RAN, most of which he served in submarines. it is very funny. The author tells about the scrapes and scraps he was involved in, many of which were hilarious. He talks about the scams he got up to, most of which backfired in one way or another. He also talks in detail of life aboard a submarine. Some may find some of his stories distasteful, especially the one about wankerchiefs. I really enjoyed this book.

Probably the funniest book I've read in a lot of years. Some of my mates were in the mob and this book sounds very familiar. Great read, had to stop quite a few times to wipe my eyes.
I would recommend it to anyone but probably ex-service personal would enjoy this more, even so if you're fed up with staying in due to the Coronavirus then this book will help you to laugh again.
Brilliant book.

Hilarious but only really if you have ever served in the Navy, or lived with someone that has served in the Navy! Took me back to the good old days when I lived in Gibraltar. A funny read.
