January 10, 2014This isn't really a "review" since I wrote it! But I wanted to put it out there in case anyone else is looking for a fun, beach read. The story is inspired by a news article about how Paris Hilton gave the police a tip that helped them solve a crime. That made me think how funny it would be if her whole "party girl" persona was just a cover for her secret life, working as a private investigator. The result was Heiress, P.I. -- think Paris Hilton meets Veronica Mars. Hope you enjoy! -Amanda Mahan (author)

I was just going to sample the book and see if it was something my nieces might enjoy (they're probably a little young for it yet) and got totally sucked in. As a full grown man, I am certainly not the intended audience by a longshot, but Mahan's writing is so sharp, funny and propulsive, and her central character so instantly likable (which you could never say about the Hilton's and Lohan's that her adventures are very loosely based around) I was hooked from the opening chapter. Speaking of which, one of my favorite touches is that all her chapter titles are presented as tabloid headlines that comment on the action in clever ways. If I have one criticism it's that the book is so obviously intended as the first in a series (and that's NOT the criticism) that Mahan crafts a cliffhanger ending that'll leave you wanting more pretty much right away. The plot is twisty and just complex enough that I'd love to see what the author would do with an adult mystery thriller (without sacrificing the humor, of course). It's the perfect book for girls of a certain age, and if you end up reading it with them, more's the better. You can definitely tell Mahan's spent time in LA, as she nails a certain upper class Westside milieu in a way that edges the book into satire territory--think Veronica Mars meets Clueless, basically. In fact, it's kind of begging to be a TV series, so pay heed, CW and FOX execs!

This super–fun read is a romp through celebrity culture, an unfolding detective story, and a tale of friendship. It weaves like a car chase through L.A.’s haute boutiques, private clubs, Hollywood mansions, and trendy hotels. The fast pace of the dialog and the lingo hooked me in fast during the first few chapters. But I was wondering how the book could pull off such a far-fetched premise: What if a “Los Angeles It Girl” were actually a private investigator fighting crime? About 1/3 of the way through the book, the plot kicks in strong. I couldn’t put it down. If I hadn’t already blown through it, I would have saved it for vacation. Heiress, P.I. would taste great with a fruity cocktail and a beach.

The author of this book approached me following Bout of Books and asked me if I would be interested in reviewing. After hearing the description, I decided that the story sounded unique enough that my interest was peaked, so I decided that I would take a stab at it. I was not disappointed.
Heiress, PI is kind of like Veronica Mars meets Encyclopedia Brown, with a huge celebrity twist.
Inspired by a true event, this story asks the question, what if your favorite teen celebrity really was a private investigator?
Lucy Hansen is the heiress to a huge hotel conglomerate, and yet her family has a dark, hidden secret, a hidden past that could destroy everything.
I found myself reading through this one pretty quickly, sucked into the drama and the action and the little bit of romance that was thrown in there, too. I actually got a kind of Princess Diaries feel when I got to the section where she is holed up with her grandmother, as well. Not sure why, but it kind of reminded me of that.
Overall, it is well written with few editing missteps and I felt that the few that were there were easily overlooked. I couldn't even remember where they were right now without going back and re-reading to look for them, which is high praise from me, the editing and grammar nazi, as I have been called by an author or two.
The ending left me hanging on the edge, wanting to know what would be coming next. I really want to know more about these characters and find out where the story leads. If you want a young adult read that is different from the paranormal and fantasy that seems to have proliferated the genre, this is the book for you.

The first thing that stood out, of course, was the cover. The pink, the nails, the mugshot -concept,... love it! It's flirty, it's girly, it's fun... just like the book! I liked the make-over idea and inside glimpse into the life of the rich, famous... and scandalous.
The story turned out completely different than I expected. I liked the unexpected turn of events. The only 'negative' comment I can make, is that I felt all of it was a bit... rushed.
I think I would have liked the book even more if it had been a bit longer. It would give you more time to really understand the characters. Lucy, for example is a very "green teen", but that side of her hardly comes across from the moment "LuHan" is born, and the internal struggle between her LuHan -image and her true self would have been interesting to read, I think.
I enjoyed her "under cover" moments. They were scandalous, exciting and awkward ('cause let's face it: although she's a lovely girl, she was almost more convincing as 'Paris' than you was as 'Veronica Mars') at the same time.. very entertaining! IF the book had been a bit longer, I would have enjoyed more of these inside-scenes.

Laugh-Out-Loud Funny! A great read!
This book is a fun-loving, light-hearted look into a teenage private investigator's life (a-la Hardy Boys or Scooby Doo.) Lucy Hansen (LuHan) is a tree-hugging, bottle recycling, carbon minimalist who right from the get go wraps you around her finger and doesn't let you go. Matched with her best friend (and wannabe boyfriend) Holden, they embark on adventure after adventure trying to crack a case he's working on, using an array of crazy gadgets.
Ms. Mahan writes realistic characters who make you want to laugh, cry, and smack your forehead at their antics, as they move through the story, eagerly taking the reader along for the ride. As one who likes a mystery (but NEVER figures it out till the end), I kept trying to figure out who the bad guy was, only to realize that I was stumped at every turn, all the while laughing at Lucy's increasingly insane antics.
This book is a great read for older teens (Grade 10+), and adults who enjoy a break from the mundane. Ms. Mahan has crafted a book that promises a great adventure, and leaves you waiting with baited breath to see what happens next. Eagerly anticipating the next book - need to see if Lucy and Holden become an item! Thanks for a fantastic read. I really enjoyed it.

I loved it!
This was a fast-paced, chick lit mystery enhanced by very interesting and likeable characters, and sprinkled with Hollywood flair.
Lucy - a smart and lovely girl, involved in ecology and heiress to a fabulous fortune - and her childhood friend Holden, an intern at a detective agency, get involved in a dangerous investigation which turns out to be too close to home and puts Lucy’s life in jeopardy.
It was a very interesting, full of action, and hilarious at some points read. I highly recommend it.

Quick read. Kept me entertained. An unexpected twist was thrown in that gave it the potential to become quite interesting, but the book abruptly ended before there was any resolution! Is there going to be a second book? What happens??

Amanda Mahan's secret mission began in high school when she won a writing competition with an essay about a skydiving trip. The fact that she never actually went skydiving suggested a career in fiction. After graduation, she spent several years writing comedic online games and worked on two NBC sitcoms. She was also the writer and creator of the People's Choice award-winning "Green Mommy" blog.

This was certainly an interesting concept and this book aimed at young adults is full to the brim with drama!
This book follows the life of Lucy Hansen who becomes embroiled in a private investigation that starts out with one main goal. But, unsurprisingly, things don’t really go to plan and soon Lucy and her best friend Holden are involved in a more sinister and dangerous plot than they ever thought they would be. Travelling across America in helicopters, going undercover and having a dodgy run in with rohypnol is just the start of Lucy’s problems…
I was pretty much hooked from the prologue and as the book went on, I was eager to find out what would happen next. The pacing was really great and the plot unravels at the perfect rate, not giving too much away all at once. The plot itself was hard to predict but it was relatively easy to follow meaning I was able to keep up with the characters and understand everything that was going on (always a plus point!)
Mahan’s writing was consistent throughout and provided a very simple yet effective narrative voice. Her characters were all very well considered and I certainly enjoyed Lucy as a protagonist. She was exactly what this book needed and I loved how she was very enthusiastic to do whatever she could when it was expected of her. I also enjoyed the relationship between her and her friend Holden – it was a very realistic and relatable friendship that many people will be able to recognise.
This book wasn’t particularly long – it’s manageable in one sitting so I think it probably just scrapes into the novel boundaries and is just that little bit longer than a novella. To be honest, I think it was exactly the right length. If it had been longer then it would all have mainly been plot filling because everything this book needed was in it. I will be interested to know if this book is part of a series because the ending leaves it very much open for a potential sequel and/or multiple sequels. I would be interested in reading the next book if there happens to be one.

If you read the blurb for this book, I can guarantee you will get all that and MORE! Lucy is happier playing in the dirt than glamming it up, but she will do anything to help Holden. Yes, some of the issues stars deal with Lucy falls face first into, but the way they come about will have you rolling on the floor.
Lucy is bold and fearless once she puts her mind to something. When she makes a name for herself she goes ALL OUT! The wardrobe malfunction that happens to Lucy had tears running down my face….from laughter! Everything that Lucy does she does with gusto.
I absolutely loved this story and would love to read more about Lucy! You cannot help but love her and what she stands for. You’ll love how Holden bribes her to do some investigating for him! This book is sweet, funny, and intense. Some of the situations Lucy gets herself into get pretty hairy.

Heiress, P.I. by Amanda Mahan is an adorable private investigator/Hollywood heiress story that is so much more than that. Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Brittany Spears and the Olson twins have nothing on Lucy Hansen! You can call this a guilty pleasure of pure pleasure. Either description would be correct. This is a playful book that had me giggling as I read with gusto.

I really enjoyed this book. Lucy is a likable teenager I could relate to, despite the fact that she is a bona fide heiress. She is no snob and refreshingly down to earth. The writing is sharp and the pace is fast as Lucy sets out to help her BFF crack a case for his new boss, a world famous PI. The case involves getting close to the heir to another fortune, who has the hots for Lucy and every other hottie in sight. Lucy does some growing up along the way, and gets to know her BFF in a new way.
The ending came unexpectedly, at 90% progress through the text, because there is a generous sample appended, and felt a bit rushed and anti-climatic in comparison to Lucy's earlier adventures.
All in all, a light, fun, breezy read.

The Concept behind this was sooooo cute and really pulled me in. Imagine that all the hi-jinks an LA heiress gets into is because she is really a private investigator. So I enjoyed the premise, but not all of the execution. It left too many things open ended at the end. It almost felt like there should have been a few more chapters at the end. I get that in a series, you can leave things a little open, but there should also be a feeling of some closure. I felt like the case was not resolved. Also the romance aspect frustrated me. A great set up, but she strings her best friend/love interest along and that doesn't get any kind of closure at all. I would wait until there is a sequel before picking this title up.

In spite of having rich and famous parents, teenage Lucy has managed to fly under the paparazzi radar and dedicated herself to save-the-plant-causes. When she tries to help Holden, her best friend and intern at a Beverly Hills detective agency, she is suddenly and unwittingly thrust into Hollywood’s spotlight, and no one could be less well prepared. Her every foolish move and mishap is recorded, publicized, misinterpreted and criticized and, even worse, she discovers a trail of crime leading back to her father. Can she save her family’s reputation, help Holden secure his future at the agency, and will she get her first kiss? I laughed at her escapades and enjoyed her discovery of how riches and fame could work for her as well as against her.

I want this book to become a movie. It would be such fun to see this book come alive on the big screen because it was a blast to read as a novel. It was full of fun characters, especially the main one (who was instantly likable) with many others sprinkled in. It was a great chick lit mystery mixed with Hollywood flare. There is something for everyone. I loved that this is one that a mother could read with her older daughter or one that a book club would love to read as well. It is great when a book can be enjoyable and appropriate for a larger audience. I can't wait to see what Mahan comes up with next!

Heiress, P.I. is a quick read. There were moments where I thought I could get into it, but I just couldn't. I felt the main character was shallow, she doesn't care about all her wealth but constantly detailed brands that she was wearing and name-dropped. There wasn't enough substance to her character for me to connect, but I could have overlooked it if the character was consistent. I felt overall the book was poorly written, an editor or a first reader should've helped out by pointing out the inconsistencies, contradictions and typos. I did however, love the cover :)

The cover and title of this novel set its tone fairly well. It's light and frothy and does not take itself too seriously, making it a quick and easy read. This also means that there isn't too much below the surface, making it harder to connect with Lucy's plight and foibles, entertaining and outlandish as they might be.

a very funny book, about mis-haps of a wall flower type of girl, who, to help her best friend and save her father, ends up being the holy grail of the paparazzos... and how innocent situations can be spun into looking like something else.

I picked this book up as a free kindle download, and it turned out to be more enjoyable than I might have expected. It is a silly, over-the-top teenage mystery escapade. I thought it was fun, if a bit unfortunate that our heroine should accumulate so much negative press for her efforts.

Well I don't hate this book but truly don't like at all. There was a couple of god moments but almost, none for me :/

This is a cute book and an easy read. However, I noticed a large number of typos and similar issues in my electronic copy which was frustrating.

This was a fun read and quick too. It easily kept my attention as well. I'm interested in reading more of this author's work.

Not as intense as I like my mysteries to be but I liked the main character. This is very YA reading.

This book was a lot of fun I was amazed how much bad luck a eighteen year girl can have, even if it was for the right reasons and it all work out in the end. This was a great YA novel.
