Pippilotta Delicatessa Windowshade Mackrelmint Ephraim's Daughter Longstocking If you loved Pippi as a kid, you probably had that memorized. My sister and I used to repeat it to each other frequently. Very useful for annoying the older siblings. With adulthood came the memory dump of all nonessential information, but as soon as I started re-reading the book it all came back to me. Maybe I should give the sibs a call and recite it, just to remind them how lucky they are to have me as a little sister.
I really envied Pippi Longstocking when I was about ten years old. What kid wouldn't? These are the things that made me jealous:
1)She lives alone in her very own house.
2)She has a horse living on her veranda.
3)She has a pet monkey named Mr. Nilsson.
4)She doesn't have to go to school.
5)She's uncommonly strong--stronger than the strongman at the circus. She can even lift her own horse.
6)She has a suitcase full of gold coins that never seem to run out.
7)She says whatever she wants to say, and gets away with it. (She's really quite obnoxious and rude, which I never noticed as a kid.)
This volume contains three Pippi books, but I only read the first two. One chapter into the third book, I was ready to move on to something else. When I was a child I strongly favored the first of the Pippi books, and that preference still stands. I was never as fond of Pippi in the South Seas, although I do love looking at the illustrations.
I recently finished reading these three Pippi books to my seven and four year old boys. I was worried that it would be outdated or boring or demonstrate too much bad behavior. My seven year old was worried that it would be too girly. I'm happy to report that we all loved these books. After the first chapter, the boys were running to bed every night with the book, begging for another chapter. I loved Pippi so much. She really loves her friends and does all sorts of big and little unseen things to make their lives happy and full of magic. I wanted to be more like her in that way. Of course, Pippi does mischievous things too, but only to be fun and silly, never mean-spirited. She has lots of fun adventures, just the kind of things kids want to do. It's a wonderful fantasy for children that haven't yet been spoiled by our fast-paced world.
Pippilotta Delicatessa Windowshade Mackrelmint Efraim's Daughter Longstocking moves into the Villa Villekulla after her sea captain father is lost at sea. Not lost precisely, as in dead, just lost as in Pippi believes he is now a Cannibal King on a South Seas island. Pippi, as she is known, lives with her monkey friend Mr. Nilsson and discovers a horse living on her porch. When the neighbors, Tommy and Annika, good little children, meet Pippi, their world changes. Life suddenly gets a lot more colorful and exciting whenever Pippi is around! This three-in-one volume contains the three original stories Pippi Longstocking, Pippi Goes on Board and Pippi in the South Seas.
I remember really liking these books when I was 10-11ish. I also liked the movie version and I know my niece did too. As we both dressed as Pippi for Halloween, many years apart, I'm taking her to see a Pippi Longstocking ballet! I thought I would refresh my memory by rereading the books. I probably should have let my happy memories stand because after many years and adulthood, the stories don't quite hold up. Pippi is outrageous! Without much adult supervision, she doesn't have anything in the way of manners or any idea of anything practical and normal. She tells big fat whoppers at the drop of a hat- but at least she knows she's lying. Her fibs often contain outrageous untruths about foreign countries. By the end of the series though this goes from stereotyping to what the reader understands is Pippi's way of telling stories. Tommy and Annika are normal, upright, proper children until Pippi comes along. Pippi rolls out cookies on the floor, lets her animal friends live inside (in this world apparently no one needs a bathroom/outhouse/backyard), lies a lot, doesn't have a bedtime, does whatever she feels like , is the strongest girl in the world and is pretty much crazy!
The final book does veer into slightly ethnic stereotyping of Pacific Islanders. (They're cannibals but there's no mention of what a cannibal is, they have a white chief to rule them, they have names like Moana but no actual culture). The plot is pretty silly and leaves a lot to be desired.
However, Pippi is such a fun and likable character. She has a heart of gold and is very generous. I love the tricks she devises to give charitably to Tommy and Annika, as well as the children who haven't any money. Her adventures are a lot of fun and very appealing for young children. Pippi represents the ultimate kid fantasy-being left alone to do exactly as she pleases. This may bother adults who know children need structure, but kids love Pippi's boundless life. Pippi also knows right from wrong and gives rude adults and would-be bad guys lessons they will never forget.
My favorite is the first book. It introduces Pippi and her outrageous behavior. Each chapter is episodic so can be read aloud or by independent readers. I got swept away on a breathless Pippi adventure one chapter at a time. I love the circus episode and the way she "entertains" burglars.
In the second book, my favorite chapter is when Pippi goes shopping. It shows what a kind and generous girl she really is. I wanted to be a neighborhood child too! The final two chapters made me kind of sad. I grew attached to Pippi just as Tommy and Annika did!
I did not like the illustrations in this book. Pippi didn't look like the Pippi I remember from my childhood. She looked too cartoonish. I also don't think her hair was red enough! I always pictured her with bright orangey red hair. I remember only black and white line drawings like this
and of course the movies
This volume includes a very interesting life story of Astrid Lindgren with photos. I want to read more about her!
i gave this three stars* because it includes "pippi in the south seas" and i remember that one being weird around race. i can't remember if "pippi goes on board" has those same elements. i love pippi for beating up cops and robbers, washing her floor with sponges strapped to her feet, playing inside a hollow log, sleeping with her feet on her pillow, and making the uptight mom next door have a hissy fit because she doesn't know how to behave like a "lady." but her encounters with people in the south seas leave something to be desired.
*i bumped it up to four because the good parts are so very good and i dont want to be mistaken for someone who doesn't understand the joys of pippi.
I remember loving the movie as a kid, but when I read this book recently, Pippi annoyed me to no end. She lies all of the time and is attention-starved. I think that the movie made her more endearing because she didn't seem so needy. Thus, 1 star to Pippi.
I spent the entire summer and most of September reading this wonderful edition of 'Pippi Longstocking' with my 10 year old daughter and I'm so we spent the time to do it-- we laughed and laughed.
Als luisterboek gelezen, voorgelezen door Dieuwertje Blok. Wat een genot. Pippi is mijn held.
Pippi is such an enchanting character. She's refreshingly peculiar and she owns up to it. She is an unlikely heroine who has a heart for adventure, justice and goodwill. I appreciate that her imagination is rich, that her spirit is strong, and that her creativity is endless. Without question, I have enjoyed reacquainting myself with her stories.
Lila and I have been reading this book for a awhile and I loved it. Pippi is such a cute girl who is strong and independent and loves herself. Sometimes when hard things happen Lila will tell me, “ Pippi doesn’t care what other people think.” I love that she assimilates with Pippi’s strength. Such a fun book.
Pippi misbehaves and disrespects adults and it is portrayed as fun and funny. I know she is an orphan, so I understand how she doesn’t know social rules, but I don’t think it’s a great idea to let children read stories in which the main character gets away with doing wrong. Even worse if it seems fun! I’m disappointed but won’t be reading this to my children.
Astrid Lindgren's "The Adventures of Pippi Longstocking" is a whimsical and empowering tale of a spirited, independent girl. Pippi's adventures, infectious charm and contagious joy make this book a timeless favorite for readers of all ages.
I wasn't a big fan of Pippi when I was little, but this time around I had so much fun reading this book! Pippi is undisputably crazy (eating death cup mushrooms and randomly shooting with her father's gun like it's no big deal) but she also has the kindest and most generous heart. I loved that.
Such fun, silly adventures. The later stories get a little bit problematic regarding the island Pippi visits, and I wouldn't recommend the third book for contemporary child readers (unless there was heavy guidance and conversation involved).
My Pippi Longstocking Halloween costume went under-appreciated when I was in elementary school, that's all I've got to say. Kids these days don't know the classics.
