The Champion #1

The Champion

Rate this book
The Old Testament gods are alive and living in San Francisco. There’s a war going on around us, a war that most of us are totally unaware of. And sometimes a simple request to God can turn your world upside down, confronting you with powers that you never imagine existed. Pastor Harris Borden asked God to be used in a bigger way, and God listened to him. Now Borden’s running for his life, accused of being a terrorist by the U.S. government, thrown off buildings, stabbed, imprisoned and left for dead more times than he can count. They blew up the plane his wife was on, evil powers surround his church and community, and through it all, Pastor Borden continues to ask himself, Am I truly willing to surrender everything to God? In the spirit of Frank Peretti’s This Present Darkness, The Champion reminds us that we are not alone in this world, and that God never promises that following will be easy, or safe.

I'm at that point in my life where I've been there, done it all, and got nothing more to prove. For me, the joy of writing is not in making money, or getting recognition, but in just being able to share a good story.

I'm a husband of a loving wife for close to 50 years, have two grown children, and two grandsons. I love kayaking, reading, writing, computer games, home repairs, and dogs. I retired from university teaching and then came back part-time as an adjunct because I love my students.

I've written 28 books, 200 articles and stories, and still consider myself a student of the craft with much to learn. I write mostly Christian suspense, but dabble in other areas occasionally. More than anything, I have learned that the joy is in the journey.

Harris is frustrated with his life as a small-town pastor, and feels God must have more for him than settling church board squabbles, but when he asks God for a bigger mission, he gets more than he is expecting.

I would say this book reads like a supernatural spy-thriller. There is a strong Christian element, but I like the way following God's calling lands Harris in a several bad situations with no quick Deus ex machina. Most of the book is told through Harris' point of view, but there were a number of other characters, some more interesting than others, and some confusing, but it came together when I realized we were following an object, not all the characters. In the end, I thought it was a neat and interesting way to move the story along, as the object is pivotal in the closing scenes.

Not written for YA, and some violence with a number of deaths, but fine for older YA and up. Highly recommended for those who like action/adventure/thrillers.

Wow. I loved this book. Oftentimes I see reviewers say “I couldn’t put it down!” or “I finished it in only X days!” While I certainly found the story engaging, I wasn’t able to read big chunks of it at any given time due to time constraints I have as a husband, father, son, employee, neighbor, etc. I’m actually thankful for this because it forced me to read slowly and often encouraged me to think: Could I be that bold in my faith? What would I do here? How does this apply to my life? This book was more than just entertainment for me—it ministered to me. The point of view changes frequently, sometimes introducing new characters. I found this a little difficult to follow, but I think it was more my fault than the author’s since I read slowly and in small pieces. I’m definitely interested to read more books in this series to find out what happens to Pastor Harris and what Glen Robinson has to teach me.

Harris Borden is a small town pastor looking for meaning, a revival, a chance to do something big for God. But be careful what you ask for -- you just might get it.
Harris isn't prepared for the way his life unravels when he asks to be used by God, and I stayed up way too late to find out how it turned out for him. Gripping, intense, with a sympathetic main character -- this book pulled me in quickly. When Harris explains what has happened, his congregation reacts typically -- half believe while the other half call for his resignation. Nevertheless, he continues on the path God's put before him, regardless of how it will impact him, his career, and his family. The progression of how Harris changes due to his choices was natural and never forced. (I didn't realize there were sequels, and I'll need to continue on with the series to find out what happens to him!)
This book reminded me of Frank Peretti's This Present Darkness, with plenty of angels, demons, and spiritual combat. The Champion has a similar vibe and doesn't disappoint.

I have been wanting to pull this one from the pile for a while, it appeared to be thought provoking and distinct, and I’m thrilled to share that Robinson did not disappoint. This one opens with the Devil and three of his most trusted demons having a meeting…

Then it’s decided. In the end, we are just as mortal as man. But while God will save a few, we will corrupt and destroy the rest of them. That is the best way to hurt Him. While many worship what you represent, most will come to believe the existence of God is a myth.”

The woman spoke up “But if they think he is a myth, won’t they think you don’t exist either?”

The Chairman smiled broadly this time.

“Exactly.”

and then rolls ahead to Harris’ meeting with the angel known as “The Messenger”

“OK Messenger,” Harris said. “What’s the message you have from God for me?” He leaned back and cocked an eyebrow.

“What did you pray for?” the stranger asked. “No i’ll tell you what you prayed for. You asked God to be used in a bigger way. That request has been granted…

The novel really takes off at that point, and I appreciate Robinson’s pace and style of writing, as the story gets a clear message across to the reader, without feeling you are being delivered a sermon.

The surprising thing in this novel for this reader, was that you expect it to be a struggle of Good vs. Evil, which on the surface it is, however the larger conflict in this novel for me, was Harris’ struggle between God and himself. Allowing himself to trust fully in God and let go of his own thoughts, plans, tactics, and just to be lead fully by God. Its this struggle, (and yes there are times you are certain Harris will lose the battle) that captivates the reader.

Harris, journey takes him down a path where he loses nearly everything of importance to him, his wife, his church, his friends, and it seems he may even lose his faith, and must fight to continue to do good even when it looks as though God may have tossed him aside. His character grows so much throughout this novel that he’s not only physically not recognizable by the last few chapters, but he’s changed on a deeper level.

Not to give the novel away, this one has a superb climax, with all the bells and whistles you would want in a novel such as this.

The only heads up I will give, is that this one is part of a trilogy, which I didn’t catch until the end of the novel, so be warned that like most trilogy’s there are always a few loose ends to draw you into the second novel. That said, this one is a great read, very compelling and thought provoking and regardless of your personal beliefs it is one that will have you asking that question…what would I do?

Definitely one to pick up. I for one will be shopping come the weekend for book two The Heretic.
This one reads fast, so definitely a great choice for a quiet summer weekend away at the cottage.

So, I bought this book and started reading it one morning during vacation, didn't even put it down to eat, it was that compelling. I then downloaded the sequel, The Heretic, and read it the same day. It's unusual to find a series of books this dramatic that still upholds good principles. It's inspirational and the main character is admirable, one who stands for right regardless of the consequences. Highly recommend.

Gripping tale that illustrates the difference between Christianity the way most of us practice it and truly being all in for the Lord.

The Champion is two stories, the first the be careful what you ask for and the second a deeper story of trusting in God.

Harris is a pastor, who like many of us, wants a greater purpose in life. For better or worse he gets one. As is too often true God opens a door for us then we think we know how to do things better. Harris is no different. It is only when he finally lets go and follows Gods plan that things finally work out for him.

This book is a fast paced, fun, and at the same time hits on some deep issues. If you are looking for a good story that gives you something meaningful to reflect on you won’t go wrong. I am looking forward to reading the sequel.

A gripping, intense read. Really makes you think. The main character's development was executed flawlessly. I kept thinking I knew where he was going, and then he'd surprise me again. I read this over a weekend, and if I could have, I wouldn't have stopped even to eat. If you like action-packed novels with a strong Christian storyline, you'll love this book. Just hang on for the ride.

This was not the type of novel I generally read, but I'm glad I took a chance on it. The story is the struggle of good vs. evil told in a gripping manner. The author certainly knows how to keep the reader engaged with this compelling tale.

Reminds me how we need to follow God's ways

Reminds me how we need to follow God's ways, not follow our own instincts and inclinations. May we draw ever closer to Him.
