There ain't a rider that can't be thrown. And large-animal veterinarian Regan O'Connelli was thrown hard when he discovered his fiancée with his best friend. Now he's starting his life over at the Last Chance Ranch, run by the tightly knit Chance clan. But damned if his libido hasn't perked up over the spirited redhead who looks a lot like trouble….
Lily King is the queen of anti-structure. Turns out, that makes running a horse sanctuary a challenge. Regan's help is exactly what Lily needs—not to mention the seriously sexy sparks that are flying between them. Now she just has to convince this fallen cowboy to dust himself off and get back in the saddle…and into her bed!
New York Times and USA Today bestseller Vicki Lewis Thompson believes love makes the world go around and laughter makes the trip worth taking. The recipient of RWA’s Nora Roberts Lifetime Achievement Award and the author of more than ninety books, Vicki pioneered a new kind of romance hero with Nerd in Shining Armor. Following the success of her nerd stories, Vicki launched a boisterous paranormal series featuring a matchmaking witch and wizard, an ADD dragon named George, and a black cat inspired by her own precocious feline, Eve.
2nd reading: I love the storyline. Regan and Lily make a lovely couple. Liked how they took their relationship slow - they didn't just fall into bed in the first chapter. Really loved this couple. Good storytelling from this author. 5☆
I enjoyed the initial chapters that dealt with the heroine’s operation of a rescue farm but when the tall handsome stetsoned vet rides to her rescue and starts making with the foreplay matters got icky and boring.
I'm been following this series for years. Read a bunch on vacation and liked them very much. I like when she wrote more stories with the 'extended' family of the Chance's. Knew that this one was going to be difficult after reading the end of last book's ending. On two counts it is difficult because one - when a friend is betrayed by a friend and two - betrayed by your fiancé with such friend. It is 6 months later after Regan found Drake in bed with his fiancé Jeanette on Christmas Eve. He's put distance between them when he moved out to Wyoming and is working for Nick Chance at the ranch. He's been asked to help out a friend at the horse sanctuary and get her horses checked out. Turns out Lily King is in over her head with her horse sanctuary. She is a soft heart and doesn't know how to say no. She's taken in chickens and now pot-belly pigs. She was hurt by a former boyfriend/lover because she was the rebound girl and doesn't want to be another rebound for Regan. Both Regan and Lily are attracted to the other and fight it at first but then let it happen. Sparks fly and they definitely burn up the sheets and dining room table. Good sex scenes. This flows as all her other books and they find that happy ending at the end. What bothered me about the ending was Drake entering the picture and his reasons for his actions. It just didn't ring true on both Drake and Regan's parts. Drake's reasons were lame and Regan was a dope to forgive and forget so easily. I can probably forgive but trust wouldn't be that easily given again. Drake's book is next and I'm wondering if she is going to be able to convince me that he's worth it. we'll see.
Fourteenth in the Sons of Chance romance series revolving around the Chance family and their friends in Shoshone, Wyoming. The couple focus is on Lily King and Regan O’Connelli.
I couldn't wait to dive into Thompson's new installment in the Sons of Chance saga, and was particularly grateful to receive this eARC. No, I'm still gonna do an honest review...*grin*!
My Take This is typically Thompson with a sweet romance filled with decent people with whom you’d love to be friends. Although there are some people I’d be happy to see dumped at sea.
Then there’s Lily with her big heart as she slowly realizes that Nick and Regan made some good points — our Lily is the poster girl for “I can’t say no”. I can get behind Lily’s philosophy, and I do agree with her to an extent. However — ain’t it always the way? — kids and critters all need boundaries, even Lily.
I have to confess I’d react the same way Regan did, but…sigh…the more mature approach would have been to sit down and talk about it. I hate maturity… Still there are benefits to Regan's leaving, and his actions could lead to a match made in heaven, or the Peaceful Kingdom, anyway, lol. Both will learn from each other and make peace with their pasts.
Regan does have some cool horse whisperer moves that make a lot of sense. I should think the concept behind it would work for any animal. And Lily learns some very useful pointers about running a sanctuary. I do love that Regan feels inspired by Lily, even when she gets nasty.
It falls apart for me when Lily starts making really stupid decisions too fast. She doesn’t take the time to think this out, well, not right away anyway. I do love the direction Thompson takes this, with Lily finally thinking straight and following through. Even better when she realizes what she’s done---yeah, Lily! There’s a good lesson in this, to sit back and think about cause and effect, and how to get around it. And looking at the consequences of her current policy on the other animals. It just takes slipping outside your own whirlpool of habit.
Bethany and Nathan Bledsoe get a mention, and Drake’s got a surprising revelation for Regan. Definitely an ego boost for Regan!
A very worthwhile story on so many levels…
The Story It’s not good. That rainbow paint job brings up bad memories of his hippy parents’ lifestyle, and that first impression isn’t helped by some jerk thinking he can dump his overgrown pig on the sanctuary.
And yet worse when Regan finally meets the sexy Lily King, a soft-hearted woman who just can’t say no.
The Characters The so-very-colorful and very smart Lily King had some success with a video game and wants to share her bounty with a worthwhile charity — the Peaceful Kingdom Horse Sanctuary sold to her by the Turners. Her parents were two of Nick’s favorite high school teachers. Wilbur is a potbellied pig Lily accepted a short time ago. Harley is a potbellied pig his owners want to dump. Alfred G. Dinwoody is the ex-boyfriend who did not have matching values.
Regan O’Connelli is a doctor of veterinary medicine and indulging in the refuge of the Last Chance Ranch. Nick Chance is his brother-in-law and business partner. He has seven siblings and was relieved to escape Bianca Spinelli and Seamus O’Connor’s, his parents’, footloose lifestyle---they didn’t want a hyphenated last name, hence the O’Conelli.
The horses include Buck, the flower-eater; Sally is not the shy bay mare; Strawberry is a big roan; Rex is the palomino and the herd stallion; Sandy is a sweetheart of a gelding; Molasses; and, Taffy, who may be the breaking point between Regan and Lily;
The Chances Sarah is the Chance family matriarch. Mary Lou is the ranch cook who is married to Watkins, one of the ranch hands. Regan’s pregnant sister Morgan, a realtor, is married to Gabe; his twin sister, Tyler, an event player, is married to Alex Keller (he handles Last Chance’s marketing) whose sister, Josie (she owns the tavern Spirits and Spurs), is Jack’s wife; Cassidy, the youngest O’Connelli, has apprenticed to the Chance housekeeper. Nick, the family vet, is married to Dominique, a photographer, and they have an adopted son, Lester.
Drake Brewster is his former best friend---ejected from that prized spot when Regan found him betraying that friendship. Jeannette Trenton is Regan’s former fiancée. Buck Brannaman is the original horse whisperer.
The Prologue Eleanor Chance writes of grandson Nicholas’ predilection for helping injured animals. The latest is named Hercules. Henry Applegate is the large-animal vet. Jonathan and Sarah like this direction. Jack, the oldest, has a wild streak while Gabe, the youngest, is the most competitive.
The Cover You can’t help but love this cover. The shirtless Regan is so happily comfortable laid back against that hay bale, a hand to his straw cowboy hat and one thumb hooked into his jeans pocket, you just can’t help it. I reckon Thompson’s books must sell simply because her name is on it, as the title of the story is not quite the smallest font on the cover.
I’m not sure where the title is coming from as Regan is not Riding High, although…I suppose you could say that Lily is until reality hits.
Maybe I'm just not in a good place but this was... not what I needed. Smart pretty "not like other girls and I'll tell boys that outloud" who is in over her head but magically picks up on everything she's supposed to be doing in the space of 24 hours, quiet staid cowboy vet nursing a 'secret pain'. Girl interferes in his personal life after knowing him for 2.5 seconds. sex muddies the waters.
I just couldn't fall into this one. too much was unbelievable and I never was able to give in to the fantasy or the romance. 3/5 stars because I know this is an aberration for myself personally and not because of a failing on the part of the author.
I got this book in a box of books that I bought at a book sale. Reading the first page I realized that I had previously read this book. I remember liking the book the first time so I decided to keep reading. Glad I kept reading.
This is the 2nd book I read by Vicki Lewis Thompson. I liked this book's storyline. This book's dialogue made me laugh 😂. I liked the hot 🔥 & steamy scenes. I liked Regan's character. I liked Lily's character. I liked the ending.
Reread. Regan and Lily team up to get her rescue operation in shape. Slow burn in beginning, a bit of an ending rush. Didn’t expect the quick turnaround with Drake, but I’m glad they were able to move forward.
I’m still fairly new to Vicki Lewis Thompson’s books despite the fact that I read The Nerd Who Loved Me years ago. That print copy didn’t survive the new dog we found and I wasn’t able to commit Thompson’s name to memory.
Fast forward 7 years and I’m trying to catch up.
Lily King has no idea how to run the horse sanctuary that she’s recently purchased so when a friend offers to have equine veterinarian Regan O’Connelli help her organize the sanctuary, she jumps at the chance. What she doesn’t expect is a wounded man that attracts her like no one else.
Lily is the most unstructured, unorganized woman that equine veterinarian Regan has ever met but he can’t seem to get her out of his mind. Still reeling from finding his fiancé in bed with his best friend, Regan doesn’t want to get involved with Lily, but the more time he spends around her, the less he remembers why he should avoid her.
I didn’t know what to expect from Riding High, the 14th book (yes you read right) in Thompson’s Sons of Chance series so I was excited about reading it. I’m so glad I did too, it’s so different from her Wild About You series in the best ways!
At first Lily came off as a moron. I get that she was spontaneous and has a good heart so that’s why she bought a horse sanctuary but did she bother to do any research on how to run it before or after the purchase? No. I was willing to give her some points at first because I thought maybe the story took place before the internet but no, at one point she looks up what to feed pigs yet doesn’t look up how to care for horses or run a sanctuary? It didn’t make sense to me or make her seem like a very smart person. That’s what kept me from warming up to her. However, about halfway through Riding High Lily changed from inept but well meaning to a hard working, intelligent woman and I admired her ability to admit her faults and correct them.
Regan was a great balance to Lily’s flighty and unorganized personality. He’s reliable, quiet, and gentle, which was surprising given how badly he was hurt in the past. He didn’t follow the stereotype of disliking or being overly cautious about women or people because his best friend and fiancé betrayed him. He was kind and considerate of Lily and though he didn’t want to get involved with her he never treated her with any kind of disdain or suspicion. I loved that about him and because I love a man who loves animals, Regan’s profession and understanding of horses just made him all the more delicious in my eyes.
Regan and Lily’s story was peppered with appearances from the Chance family, whom I haven’t met yet (but plan to in the future) but fell in love with. They’re boisterous, loving, nosey and loyal. I loved the humor and familial love they brought to Riding High. What caught me off guard was the appearance of a character from Regan’s past. While I liked the conflict that characters’ appearance brought to Regan and then to Lily, I was disappointed with how quickly and easily Regan and this character resolved the conflict. It felt like an empty resolution and made the initial conflict seem less serious than it was.
Of course, after finishing Riding High I went to the author's site to see what book, if any came next in the series and imagine my surprise when I see that Regan's best friend and his ex-fiancé will each have their own books. At first I had a big question mark of confusion on my face. I mean, how the heck is Vicki Lewis Thompson going to explain what they did to Regan and make them likable enough to deserve a happy ending?! Talk about a challenge! Now however, I'm very intrigued and super eager to see how those two characters play out in upcoming books.
Final Verdict: Riding High was an impressive read from an author I had discovered years ago. It's definitely different from her other series and that's wonderful for new and old readers, it's like getting different authors all in from one place. I can't wait to read the upcoming books, nor can I wait to make time for the previous books in the series.
Riding High is the 14th book of the Sons of Chance series by Vicki Lewis Thompson. I didn't discover this series until around book 10, so I can tell you for absolute confidence that any of these books can be read alone and you will never know the difference. For anyone that's read Vickie Lewis Thompson you already know that her characters and her stories are just sweet, easy reads. I swear every time I pick up one of her books it's like coming home.
Regan O'Connelli walked in on his best friend/business partner and his fiance' on Christmas eve and they weren't wrapping gifts. As a well-known and talented large animal vet he knew he could find good work anywhere and that's exactly what he did. He walked out and didn't look back. His brother in law could use some help with his practice in Wyoming, so that's exactly where Regan went. When called to help out at a local animal sanctuary he was happy to take it, but he had no idea the surprises that were in store for him when he got there. Animals were running wild and free. The barns were painted many colors of the rainbow and the woman that ran the sanctuary took his breath away. But, he could tell right away that she is from the same free spirit mold that his parents were from and he has no intentions of hooking up with anyone that will just lose interest and move on a whim.
Lily King fell in love with the horse sanctuary as soon as she saw it. So, she did what she always does she jumped at the chance to be it's new owner without stopping to consider all of the angles and issues that could arise. She has an above average IQ and thanks to a video game she designed she has plenty of money in reserve, but money isn't the issue. The animals are taking over and she just can't say no when new ones are dropped off at an alarming rate. When Regan shows up and starts pointing out the changes that she needs to make right away just to keep anyone, including the animals, from getting hurt she knows she needs his help. It sure doesn't hurt that Regan is sexy, smart, and is a take charge man. Now, if she can just get him to let go of his pain and truly open up she knows the sparks will fly.
Regan was so sweet and I loved how he was with Lily. After all, Lily reminded him of everything he hated about growing up with hippy parents. Yet, he gave things a chance and got to know Lily as a person and then quickly accepted her for who she was. I love when the author doesn't doesn't dig to create drama where no drama is needed. I highly recommend Riding High to anyone that just wants to sit in front of a fire on a chilly night and enjoy a heartwarming story that will make you chuckle a lot.
This book was provided to me by NetGalley.com in exchange for my honest review.
This book has some issues, mainly that there’s a little too much back story on the Chance Family in the beginning to tie this into that series and a little too much focus on detailed sex for my tastes (even for a Harlequin Desire), but these two items aside, it’s a lovely look at coming to understand yourself and being willing to let yourself be vulnerable enough to take a chance on love.
The male main character, Regan, is broken for very good reason, but not the one he thinks is the problem. He’d caught his fiancee in bed with his best friend just six months earlier and is wallowing in the betrayal, but it takes meeting Lily for him to see everything that led up to that crushing moment so he can learn the true source of his problems. She’s an unexpected intrusion into his emotional state, and one he cannot ignore.
Meanwhile, Lily knows all there is to know about rebound relationships having had her heart stomped on by one before. Forewarned about Regan’s recent history, she’s determined to keep her distance despite the instant attraction she feels. If she can just keep things platonic as he helps her bring the horse rescue she’s purchased around into something viable without having her charges stage a coup, everything will be fine.
Lily’s heart is too open for her own good…to Regan and to the rejected animals that come to her door. Regan’s is too closed because he sees only the uprooted part of his childhood without recognizing the foundation.
This is a novel about learning your own motivations and discovering when surface appearances can be misleading, both in Regan’s interpretation of how he was raised and how Lily appears flighty when she’s just searching for the job or person to make her heart sing.
I think the resolution could have used some of the space spent on the sex mechanics to be stronger (one of the reasons I think it’s too much sex), and there’s a small thread left dangling, but the story is well written and thought out. Both of them have to grow and learn before they’re ready to commit to a shared future, and that growth occurs on the page where we can share in their discovery.
P.S. I received this title from the publisher through NetGalley in return for an honest review.
The very unconventional Lily King has left the insanity of Silicone Valley with the sale of a highly success video game to take up another insanity altogether in the form of a horse sanctuary near Shoshone, Wyoming. The odd, but animal loving woman has painted every single building on the property a different bright color which definitely reflects her personality. Lily has a serious problem with saying no to anyone wanting to drop off a creature at her doorstep, so in addition to the passel of horses overwhelming the property, she has pigs and chickens to make her life more colorful.
When Veterinarian hunk, Regan O'Connelli appears to help out in her time of need, Lily finds her immediate attraction to the man a tad disconcerting. Six months before, Regan found his fiancee is bed with his best friend, so he left that life behind and attempts to get over the betrayal that cut him in two. Lily knows about his situation and being totally screwed in a rebound relationship, she wants to run the other way since she considers Regan on the rebound, but the inevitable pull might win out!
Regan's first impression when he sees the horse sanctuary is complete surprise that makes him shake his head and gives him flashbacks to his childhood with his hippy parents. Then he sees the red-headed beauty, Lily and the inner sexual male takes over. He's there to help her get out of the precarious situation she has put herself in by biting off more than she can chew, but what's going through his head is getting her between the sheets.
Skittish at first, Lily worries that giving in to her urges is going to get her into trouble, but giving in to those urges also may put her right where she needs to be, in Regan's arms and maybe in his heart. Lily might just be what the Dr orders in getting over that betrayal and Regan actually welcomes that cure. Riding High by Vicki Lewis Thompson is a great story about two different, or not so different worlds colliding and becoming one. It's a sweet tale that runs hot when Regan and Lily give in to their passions and those passions turn into love.
I enjoyed this read and thought it was a lovely story about finding your way, rebuilding your life after you were betrayed, and starting over with a new love. I thought the author showed how easy it is to misunderstand each other, how men and women think differently.
Lily is a very smart woman but with most smart people they get bored easy until they find the one thing that makes their world tick. Lily built a game and made a ton of money, but got bored and moved on. She decides to buy a horse sanctuary, which turned in to taking in horses, pigs and chickens. She has trouble with the word NO.....She is in way over her head with too many of each animal. She isn't looking for love, or even a man, but she needs help. With animals having a free run of her land, eating her house and pooping where they want it is a little trying. She has a vet friend Nick who sends his new vet friend over to do a check up on her animals.
Regan is one hot little cowboy who has all his body parts place on him just right, is there a women alive who can resist this stud? It sure isn't going to be Lily…. Regan can't believe how pretty she is, she might be smart but she doesn't have a clue how to deal with animals. He decides to help her out and see if he can't get a little closer to her. He is 6 months out of a bad relationship and ready for a little action.
Regan can't get over the bright colors of her building, Lily has painted everything BRIGHT. He can't resist her charm and starts to want more than a few nights of hot love. Lily can't forget how he broke up with his ex and she doesn't want to be the rebound lady. Can these two get their act together and realize they were meant to be together?
I thought this story this was a great story with lots of passion. At times it moved a little low for me and felt a little rushed. I just do not see Regan getting over his issues with his best friend so fast. I thought it had a great ending but I would have loved to have had a little more closure. I do believe these two couples might be in future books since this is a series. I thought the plot was great, even had me chuckling a few times. It was worth the read.
I was excited about this book, it incorporates two different elements that I really enjoy, animals and the whole western/cowboy theme. I really enjoyed the book from beginning to end.
So Lily, on a whim, and a desire to give back, took over an animal sanctuary (well horse sanctuary), and was completely over her head. I myself, am a complete animal loved, and have been guilty of taken in a broken animal without having a clue as to how much work it was really going to be. But as Lily finds throughout the book, it's totally worth the time and effort to learn, because the bond she has with these animals is fantastic and she has such pure intentions of doing right by these animals who had no where else to go. I think one of my favorite things about Lily is that while she is a free spirit (gotta love those bright colors), she also recognized that she doesn't know everything and wants to do the best she can for these animals, even if that means giving up a little bit of that free spirit.
Regan as a male character is definitely someone I enjoyed. Of course he is the token good looking man, but there is so much more to him beyond that. He's a little bit damaged from a past relationship, but he's still such a good with such great heart. He's educated, and cares for animals, and in a man that's like the perfect combination for me! I also really loved that he has an honesty policy with Lily, that he would tell her everything he was feeling. It was fun watching him catch her off guard sometimes with what he would say, but it was also so great to have a male character just completely be honest with his feelings, I loved that there was no deception in this book.
I liked the secondary cast of characters, they all did a really good job enhancing the relationship that was brewing between Lily and Regan. Also the sex scenes with Lily and Regan and seriously steamy, and pretty well written, which was definitely nice. I really liked the dynamic and chemistry between the two characters, it made the book such an enjoyable read. Easily 4.5 stars for me.
*I received an ARC of this book free from NetGalley on behalf of Harlequin in exchange for an honest review*
Regan may have been raised in a hippy type lifestyle complete with peace, love, and drifting, but as an adult he wanted roots. He wanted stability. He thought he’d found that until he caught his best friend in bed with his fiancée. Six months later he finds himself actually thinking about getting back in the saddle, but it’s not the game calling him back onto the field of play, it’s the girl with the flaky side who paints her barn pink with turquoise doors and trim.
Lily found herself drawn to Regan the first time she’d met him, but she sensed he was broken and didn’t want to risk getting hurt herself. Not again. With a little help she realizes that she’s in a little over her head with the horse sanctuary and asks for Regan’s help. Of course that’s only the beginning of one crazily intense week between the two.
“Regan was impressive no matter what he was doing, but when he mounted a horse – oh, baby. That ramped up his sexiness quotient by about a thousand percent.”
This is a story about overcoming your past in order to move on with your future. It’s filled with humorous banter between Lily and Regan that makes you absolutely love both of them, and an intense connection that aids them in overcoming their own deficiencies and pulling on your heartstrings as they do.
My Favorite Laughable Moment: Muddy clothes and a washing machine that absolutely does not start itself.
“Lily?”
“What?”
“You didn’t turn it on.”
No, I didn’t, because I’m already turned on enough for both me and the washer to operate at top speed.
Well I guess that explains that! And yes, her response is perfectly justifiable! I’d have forgotten to turn it on too.
I learned a few tips on training horses with this book. For a city dweller it's useless information, but interesting nonetheless. That was fun. Loved the couch analysis! Really, sitting three in a row on a couch is just not comfortable! We all know it.
A very confident and fun loving heroine. A hot romantic veterinarian cowboy. A sexy couple.
"The guy was hot. As she finally admitted that she noticed that, she laughed. His hotness was the real reason she was standing here dreamy-eyed over her new vet. He was one juicy dude, in a Johnny Depp kind of way. That comparison couldn't be confirmed until she'd found out whether he had dark eyes, and he kept his bad-boy shades on the entire time, darn it. What a great idea, inviting him to dinner so he'd be around after the sun went down."
Regan O'Connelli and Lily King are training horses at the Peaceful Kingdom Horse Sanctuary and building a relationship in their spare time, even if it is a rebound affair. But neither wants it to be just a rebound thing.
I won this book via a contest by the author. I bought a copy regardless since this author is one of my auto buys .
I was given a copy of this book by Netgalley for an honest review.
RIDING HIGH is a fun, fast, sexy read. I always enjoy a Vicki Lewis Thompson novel. Lily King is way over her head with her horse sanctuary. She has taken in more than she can handle. When Regan O’Connelli points it out she knows he is right. When she meets him and he does not take off his sun glasses, she knows that is has been hurt and he is protecting himself. She knows that she does not want to be his rebound girl. When he moves in to help her with the horses so that she can adopt them out, things start to heat up.
Regan was hurt when he found his fiancée with his best friend, but being around Lily he has done a lot of soul-searching and has come to the fact that he really never was in love with his fiancée. So now he has to convince Lily that he is over his past and he wants her in his future permanently. When his best friend shows up and wants to talk to him, it could destroy his relationship. I really loved this book and give it 4/ 5 stars.
If you have not read any of Vicki Lewis Thompson, I urge you to do so. She is a great writer.
This was a fun, yet HOT and steamy book. Lily bought Peaceful kingdom. She now owned lots of horses, chickens, and two pot belly pigs. Lily was a fun heroine. She painted her barn pink, with turquoise doors. When Regan who was a large animal vet went to Lily's for the first time, I couldn't help but smile. He saw the animals roaming at will, and he noticed none of the animals were in the bright colored barn. The attraction was instant when he met Lily. Some of the book was a little cheesy, but it was also sweet. I really got a kick that the guys in this story gossiped more than the girls did. they were a real hoot when they all got together. This was a book that I really enjoyed reading.
sample from chapter 12 - Neither of them moved. He knew he should. He'd planned for this to be short and sweet. Time wise it might qualify as short, but no way had it been sweet. Sweet was lollipops, and roses, unicorns and rainbows, Kittens, and puppies. This coupling had been black velvet, blood red wine and the low wail of a saxophone. This was sex in its most earthy, sensual, primitive form. And he wanted more of it.
I’ve read all of the main books in the Sons of Chance series and this one is easily my least favorite. I wanted to like it. I really did, and for the most part, it’s good. I enjoyed Morgan’s story and loved Tyler’s, and was hopeful that Regan’s book would be too, some of the cringe worthy plot points really just killed this book for me. First, I didn’t like the fact that Morgan, who originally was adamant about not having kids, but understandably changed her mind, is now on kid number three. We get it -she’s fine with having kids, but did she have to basically be pregnant nonstop after her story? I thought surely we’d see Dominique and Nick having a kid by now, but nope. Morgan again. Second, I understand Lily encouraging Regan to hear out his former friend as a means to let go of his anger, but this book went beyond that: Regan and Drake are instantly besties again. Are you kidding me? That was so unnecessary. And now, the next two books are about Drake and the ex. As a reader, I have zero interest in either story, even if they seem like decent people. All of the lives do not need to intertwine.

Regan O'Connelli came to Last Chance Ranch after his fiance and best friend betrayed him to start his life over. He didn't expect to meet someone, let alone someone like Lily. Lily King is running a horse sanctuary, which is a big challenge for her because she is the queen of anti-structure. With Regan's help, it is all coming together. As Regan and Lily work together to bring her sanctuary to a stable structure to run it, they become closer then friends, more then really. The sparks are flying between them and they can't keep their hands off each other. Now Lily just needs to get Regan to stay for good.
I always love reading the Sons of Last Chance series, and I am definitely not disappointed. My attention was captured from the very beginning to the end. It was great, Vicki Lewis Thompson always does such a wonderful job bringing us readers something worth reading. I am looking forward to the next Sons of Chance book.
Regan O'Connelli didn't think betrayal could cut as deep as it did finding his best friend and business partner with his fiance in bed together. Six months later staying at The Last Chance Ranch has done much to improve his outlook on life. Peaceful Kingdom Horse Sanctuary run by Lily King, a free spirit, lets the animals run amok. With Regan's help and The Chance Family can turn it into not only a rescue and adoption center. Lily didn't count on having feelings for Regan despite his secret anguish. Regan hasn't felt this happy in months if not years. Will Regan and Lily have real relationship? Can they turn Peaceful Kingdom into their goal? Your answers await you in Riding High.
I love The Sons of Chance Series! It's the right mix of cowboys and adventure in the bedroom. I love the characters so much. The stories are unique and build on the previous story. I'm looking forward to my next adventure in this series.
I enjoyed reading this book. It's the perfect story of learning to rebuild your life after you've had your heart broken.

I was given a copy by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I received a free copy of this book through Netgalley for an honest review, all opinions are my own. Lily made her money creating a video game but decides to give back by buying a Horse Sanctuary. The people of the town learn of her soft hearted nature about not turning away an animal and she finds herself overwhelmed with horses. Regan is a local vet who goes to check on the animals and decides to help the feisty redhead get the horses under control and come up with an adoption plan to keep the horses to a minimum. The two are immediately drawn together but Regan is nursing a broken engagement when he caught his fiance with his best friend. My only criticism is the time frame in which the two main characters get involved. Not that it hasn't happened in real life but I wished it would have been drawn out a little more.
Meh, that's the only feeling I have after reading this book. It didn't excite me. It did nothing for me. It's a "sweet" romance that lacks any sexy action or interest that would keep me reading. For real, it was boring. I had to force myself to turn the pages.
Woman has horse rescuse, no clue how to run it. I found her character to be dull, naive and airheaded. Reagan was a little better of a character, but really? To deal with her mistakes and what not?
I felt that even though the story was slow and dragged on, it still moved fast. 50% of the way through the book, Reagan says they have only known each other for 24 hours. Halfway through the book! It just didn't feel right for me. I tried hard, but the book wasn't exciting enough for me.

Review I love these Sons of Chance books. They're so quick to read and without a doubt when you pick one up you're sure to have a good read. This book was no different. The characters are loveable, the location is perfect and the trouble/drama that they get themselves caught up in is at times funny, other times tense. Vicki Lewis Thompson's wrting style is perfect for taking her readers on a modern day ride around the ranch.
This is a DNF for me. I got to about 52% and just couldn't continue. I didn't particularly like the heroine, Lily. I think she was supposed to be somewhat free-spirited, but she seemed flighty and very impulsive to me. I didn't really care for her. The hero, Regan, was okay, but I found I just didn't care about them. The dialogue was really cheesy. And I have not read any of the other books in this series, so I didn't know any of the cast of thousand Chance characters that were name dropped. I returned this book for a refund.
I have not read any of the other "Last Chance" series books. I'm jumping in pretty far in the series, but this is the start to a set of 3 books within the series.
The book was an okay read for me. I didn't find myself invested in the characters or the story so much. In fact, I found myself putting the book down and not going back to it for a couple of days. While Regan and Lily are fine characters, they are a bit bland. Nothing special to drawn me into them.
I will read more of the series, but not right away.
*Note: I received this book free from netgalley to review.*
3 1/2 stars. Would have given it 4 1/2 if it wasn't for the ultimatum Lily gave Regan towards the end of the story. Did not think that was fair of her at all. As a side note, I find it a bit difficult keeping the O'Connelli family's names straight. With them all having gender neutral names, it takes me a bit to figure out, "Okay, was that a boy or a girl?" I understand the author's idea behind doing this, but it still makes it a bit difficult at times when the other siblings weave in and out of the storyline.
Riding High may be #14 in a series but it holds up well as a stand alone. Both Regan O’Connelli and Lily King are interesting characters. They met, are attracted, see a problem, ignore the problem and then have a problem again. All in all a cute sweet story with great characters. While Regan and Lily seem to be opposites they really compliment each other. Their journey to a HEA is interesting and fun.
