E.R. nurse Charlotte Ellison has her life mapped out, including a happily-ever-after with the perfect man. Sure, that disastrous night with sexy badass Kane Bartasavich wasn't in the plan. He's the opposite of perfect, and forever isn't in his vocabulary. What was she thinking? Still, she simply has to stay away from him and everything will be on track.
But avoidance is impossible when Kane lands in her E.R. All of Charlotte's protective instincts come out when she sees him in pain. She knows firsthand getting involved with him is a bad deal. But this attraction might be too deep to ignore.

Rating 4.5 stars Beth Andrews Shady Grove series has been a real winner for me and Small Town Redemption was a book I was really looking forward to because of the characters. We met Charlotte in her sister's book, in which Charlotte thought she was in love with James and had her life and future all mapped out and when things didn't turn out the way she wanted she propositions bad boy, her sister's boss Kane, who turns her down.
The book then jumps ahead a few months and Charlotte has regrouped and is back to her plan, which made my eyes roll because you know best laid plans and all that but what she never counted on was Kane. Now, Kane is one messed up dude, he runs a bar, has no friends and I loved how the author slowly peeled away his layers.
I mean who would have guessed that this former ranger came from a wealthy and messed up family? He had major demons to battle and a teenage daughter he adored. He in no ways fit into Charlotte's plan but he was just so perfect for her, because he was real and flawed and human.
I loved seeing his daughter Estelle, how her mother was for once not some demonized ex and even the hero's family. When Kane has an accident Charlotte is there for him, even when his father takes ill and the way he opens up to her made me see how he was falling for her without even being aware of it.
Both of them didn't make it easy, Kane with his doubts about himself and wanting to move on and Charlotte with her idea of what her life should be but when they were together they made the pages burn.
I totally adored the book.
This quote made me smile and summed up what they meant to each other "I want you, too. You're not who I envisioned, but you're the perfect man for me." He held her tight, pressed his face against the crook of her neck. "Damn right I am."
I would recommend this book heartily as an amazing opposites attract story.
Charlotte intends to find that perfect man for her and thought she had--until James decided he loved Char's sister and the proposed. Still smarting and trying to mend her broken heart, she finds herself attracted to a real badass, Kane Bartasavich. But why? He's totally NOT her type.
Unfortunately, Kane wrecks his cycle one night and ends up in the ER, where Char works and while doing her job, her protective instincts require that she take him home when he is released to heal at home, bruised ribs, broken arm, head injury and all. Then Char discovers he has a teenage daughter that that his hard-boiled persona in the bar he runs isn't at all how he acts toward Estelle.
Complications multiply when Kane's ultra-rich father, and a world-class philanderer as well, has a stroke while visiting with his granddaughter, forcing all four brothers to gather at the bedside. Char can't help seeing beyond the protective shell Kane has built around himself. But can she ever really break through to his heart, especially when he flatly rejects her declaration that she loves him?
Charlotte is ready for life and thinks she has it all figured out, then one day her life is turned upside down and she's left with the hottest man in town. Is that a bad thing? Well in this case it might be, and Charlotte is determined to not let him into her bed mind or heart.
I liked the story a lot, it was predictable and certain spots but had enough surprises to kept me reading. I wish the character of Charlotte had been dug into more, but I do understand the nature of the Genre and publisher and the demands of the book which give you less time for exploring the character and more time for telling the story. That said, I would definitely read this author again.
The bad boy, good girl trope is cute and I appreciate Kane's backstory. He definitely is my favorite character though I liked Charlotte's honesty. The ending is what gave it four stars instead of five. While I like HEA endings, I don't like how quick it happened in the book. It was the most cliche, fake ending compared to the honesty if the rest of the novel.
I really liked this story even though the ending was a bit abrupt. I liked the characters, too and Estelle actually surprised me.
Do I wish we got to see more of the aftermath of the dad's condition? And Kane's relationship with them? Sure, but there are more books in the series so maybe we'll get to see more of that and this couple there?
Great book. Charlotte and Kane make a great couple. I loved reading their story. A girl that grew up in a small town and had her whole life planned meets a guy from a big city that has made some mistakes find each other and fall in love while thinking that they were wrong for each other.
I received this book as an e-ARC free from Netgalley. Below is my review.
Kane and Charlotte are quite the damaged pair and what a lovely bumpy ride they have! This book hits so many of my buttons - angsty guy, woman looking to come into her own, family drama, and lots of pain and grovelling.
Charlotte is well, just too nice. There is an innocence about her that some might find off-putting but that just seemed right" in light of her family situation. Even when she wanted to be mad or lash out, she couldn't do it all the way. Which, honestly, is kind of a shame sometimes. Her sister, Sadie, could have used a 2x4 attitude adjustment several times in the book. You just don't have to wonder why Charlotte is the way she is; Exhibit A is Sadie's attitude. Despite her innate niceness, Charlotte somehow manages to not come across as holier than thou or as a goody-goody. She's just genuinely sweet. Frankly, that's a good thing because anyone else would have roasted Kane's reproductive organs several times over during this book.
Kane is also in need of an attitude adjustment. He got one long ago in an accident that looms large in the book, but took it a bit too far. You can't help but be impressed with Kane's dogged determination to live his life better than he had before, to make himself into a way better person. Unfortunately, he does that at the expense of any sort of emotional entanglement except with his daughter, Estelle. As Kane's backstory emerges, you can't help but root for him to get to a better place in his head and his heart. He's just the right amount of vulnerable and tough.
Estelle is a fabulous character and she somehow is the glue that holds everyone together. She bridges the gap between Kane and his family and Kane and Charlotte with her effortless spunk, her tender vulnerability, and her desire to see only the best in people. Without Estelle, no way does this work. It's refreshing to see a kid (teen) who has her own distinct personality and role to play instead of being the impediment or contributing to the issues.
I have to think Kane's brothers will be getting their own books. It's certainly set up that way and yes, I want! I'm especially interested in C.J. who intrigued with his veiled comments here.
Charlotte thought she found her prince charming but only to discover James is interested in her sister. She went to her sister’s boss and tried to seduce him only to be turned down by him. Fast forward a few months, Kane ended in ER where she is working after involved in an accident and seeing himself alone and the extent of his injury, her protective instinct has overtook her common sense, she sent him home and take care of him. In that period, she discover that Kane have a daughter who he cares very much and he is running away from his rich family. It is an interesting story for me of two damaged persons who discover each other and their journey together to their happy ending.
"a well-written story populated with nicely drawn characters. Kane is quite complex in his determination to do the right thing by Charlotte and by his teenage daughter who visits town (RT Book Reviews)". 4 1/2 stars
