Bill Tilghman was the real thing, a lawman who wore his badge for one reason to bring criminals to justice. Master novelist Matt Braun captures the final days of this extraordinary manhunter--when he faces a heroic fight on the bloody corrupt streets of Cromwell, Oklahoma. This western novel is based on the final days of Bill Tilghman. He was a lawman in the Wild West and much later in life is asked to help clean up a town under the influence of gangsters in the 1920's.
The copy I read was not titled "One Last Town". The title was changed to "You Know My Name" due to the movie, starring Sam Elliott. Keep in mind that this is a mixture of fact and fiction. Growing up in Oklahoma I have heard of the towns, and of Marshall Bill Tilghman as well, but have never heard the whole story. The book is much better than the movie, but it was hard not to "hear" Sam Elliott's voice when reading Bill Tilghman's dialog. It did cause me to research the facts for myself and found perhaps the next book I read, after Outlaw Kingdom by Matt Braun. Marshall Tilghman's widow, Zoe Stratton Tilghman, wrote a biography for her late husband, which is available in paperback. I highly recommend this book, it is entertaining, and left me thirsting for more information on the life and times of Bill Tilghman.
Based on the true events of the last days of Bill Tilghman, this book is a fun read. It gives glimpses into the early events of his life as an Oklahoma law man before end capping the legend. Tilghman was the last of a breed. At age 70 he went to a small oil boom town in Oklahoma to take on bootleggers, cocaine dealers, and while he did make the final difference in the town, he gave his life to do so.
This was a bit different for a western as it took place during prohibition and cars had started to take the place of horses as the main means of getting around. Although fiction, this story is based on the latter part of the life of Bill Tilghman, a well-known lawman.
The final days of lawman Bill Tilghman, sheriff of Cromwell, Oklahoma, who protected the citizens of the town from the criminals. This is the story of the bloody fight in the streets, a man’s quest for justice, and the woman who loved him until the end. Part of the Gunfighter Chronicles series.
Excellent. A real law man, Bill Tilghman, during the early 20's racketeering days in Oklahoma. And since it is his real story, he also gets killed at the end ... His was a great story and well written.
